Resident Evil Village was the first of Capcom's long-running horror franchise to grace PlayStation 5, and it of course looks fantastic on the new hardware. But what of the older games in the series? It appears the publisher won't be leaving its last-gen games behind, as they're all making the leap to PS5 with native versions.
To be clear, that's Resident Evil 7: Biohazard as well as remakes Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3. Each of these games is getting a PS5 version, as announced on social media this afternoon:
There isn't a release window pencilled in for these new-gen ports, only that they're coming later this year. As stated in the above tweet, the PS5 versions of these three games will come with "visual enhancements", and best of all, owners of the PS4 games will be able to upgrade for no additional cost.
Perhaps this will tide us all over until Capcom tells us more about that Village DLC, yeah? Will you play these Resi games once again on PS5? Pop some heads in the comments section below.

AWESOME news!
CAPGOD
Re2 in 60 fps, sweet
Edit : apparently it's already in 60fps lol my bad
Haven’t got round to either yet, great news!
Oh, hell yeah! All three are still in my backlog too. I’ll be jumping in as soon as the upgrade is released. Between this announcement and the Trails from Zero announcement…what freaking awesome Wednesday morning!
With more and more developers offering free upgrades this is just going to make Sony look bad more and more. They'll have to cave in eventually.
I'm sure they are the only, or very few, people charging for 'upgrades'.
@ShogunRok CAPGOD indeed.
Although I won't play these besides re7 because I don't have the plat for that one.
Very cool of Capcom to make the upgrade free. I feel like they always deliver to fans and rarely disappoint. Bring on the Resident Evil Village DLC!
Hold on. FREE upgrades? Good for them. And seeing 7 being part of that is fantastic.
Oh geez, now I get to be chased by Jack Baker and Mr. X all over again. I can't wait!
I wonder if the PS Plus Collection version of RE7 is eligible for the free upgrade
@Squanch you did not complete these awesome games? Shame, this is like not having played Uncharted and Last of Us as a PS user.
Great news coming. I would also take a native disc version of Resi 3. But free upgrade is also nice.
@RuggeD_ probs not sony dont do that
Neat, and they're all free enhancements! Still haven't touched the 3 Remake so when the patch is out that should be a good time to play it.
Time to play them all over again.
It's great capcom will upgrade the game for free, re2 remake already 60 fps on ps4 pro (and ps5) though, so I'm already satisfied with the game performance.
@Nintendo4Sonic I own and played them on PS1 and GameCube. Just haven’t gotten around to playing these particular remakes. Heck! I beat both RE1 and RE2 with just the knife back in the day. I love RE, just have to much to play these days. I will however be putting them ahead of everything else on the backlog list once this upgrade drops. I am pretty excited see William Birkin’s wonderful face with modern graphics.
@GADG3Tx87 yep they really looking anti consumer right now
whaaa? why! i guess i dont mind capcom upping the grafx detail but are we talkin free upgrades here for ps5? are they gonna do a VR grafx upgrade, too, for RE7 for example when the PSVR 2 comes out? also, whats that game where u run around in like... a co op team of 3 or 4... and you're goin thru facilities and it's basically like Left 4 Dead. its an RE game, it was on the 360 years ago. raccoon.. something... i forget. that was awesome! i wanna see that upgraded for ps5! im hoping these grafx upgraded versions will be 1440p or higher and 60 frames. im sure ray tracing would be possible, as these arent huge, taxing, open world games with tons of enemies all over.
@GADG3Tx87 They kind of already did cave with the HFW upgrade, right? I think Sony will probably think twice about it from here on out.
Waiting for the inevitable "PS5 owners who have claimed Resident Evil 7 as part of the Playstation Plus collection are not eligible for the free upgrade" to hit.
And to be fair, the biggest strength in the 2 & 3 remakes was the lighting, so I imagine the ray tracing will make them look absolutely ridiculous (and terrifying). Can't wait!
I might also had that Resident evil origins needs PS5 port so we're not stuck with 30fps only.
Apparently they will also include other improvements for PS5, like 3D audio and haptic feedback.
@Squanch
That was after a lot of backlash though to be fair. It could go either way if they continue or abandon that practice. One would hope they realise how it makes them look considering they need to attract people to their new console.
Loved Resident Evil 2. Once I get a PS5 I’ll do another play through with it.
@Amusei isn’t RE2 already in 60fps?
@ShogunRok hope they do save transfer as that will be 3 free platinum’s for me 😉
Free? So no $10 upgrade charge?
Sony, are you listening?
Best news of the day!
RE7 is the only one that haven't finished (got a bit scarred in VR) so will give that another go then perhaps a crack at Village again.
Hell yeah, can't wait to revisit RE2R with the extra bells and whistles. It already was a pretty big leap for me back in late 2020 going from a base PS4 on a 1080p non-hdr tv to a PS5 on a 4K, HDR setup. That locked 60 fps also made a brilliant experience even better.
@SCHONBOB
In practice yes, but on PS4 it didn't always hit the target.
Looking forward to replaying RE3 with the PS5 upgrades 😁
@GADG3Tx87 Sinking City and Chaosbane are the only non-Sony games I can think of that charge for next gen versions.
I assume that those who have RE7 from the PS Plus Collection will not be eligible for this upgrade...knowing Sony
Good to know, there's a lighting glitch on RE7 where the sky in daytime looks like some kind of watercolour painting when playing on PS5. Granted 90% of the game is in the nighttime, but still, it's pretty jarring when starting a new game.
Not gonna happen, but would be cool if Resi 7 got a bit of a bump up in resolution and assets quality too for PSVR.
I honestly feel like Blood and Truth is the only PSVR game that's received an upgrade utilising PS5 boost improvements
Does this include if you own the physical versions as well?
@Amusei 2 and 3 were already 60fps on PS5 and even PS4 Pro I'm pretty sure. They had uncapped framerate if I recall and ran at like 1800P or so. Hopefully with this upgrade they're native 4K maybe some raytracing too.
@Amusei It's already 60 fps.
Very unexpected and really nice to see some positive upgrade news. Well done Capcom.
I'd play through these all again. Great games.
I'll play RE2/3 again, defo. I wasn't that keen on RE7 after a few hours but I'll give it another crack.
@Richnj @GADG3Tx87 Judgment, Observer and The Binding of Isaac also charge full price for next gen versions.
It's not going to happen but I'm going to say it anyway ... More content for re3 remake
@BRT15 i mean no offense but why would you get a free upgrade , if you didn't buy the game? it makes sense.
Oh wow maybe now I will finally finish of those three games lol
ok cool, but has the time to replay all these games all over? idk know how i feel about that!
Looks like an excuse for me to play these awesome games again.
Nice, especially since I received Resident Evil 7 for free through PS Plus. Looking forward to claiming the free PS5 version
Epic news! I've been holding off on playing those exact games for this very reason.
I’ve just played 2 and 3 on PS5 and they both looked stunning, and I use them to show off how good the PS looks to friends… didn’t even realise they weren’t upgraded!
Free? The rest of the publishers take f*cking note please Sony, Rock* I'm looking at you guys as I'm sure gta 5 will be £50 at least
I really want to play uncharted 4 ps5 Edition but I'm not paying the price again
@Squanch that's OK. It's just, I would have gone insane, if wouldn't have played them by now. Bought 2, 3, 7 and 8 all Day 1. And I love these games.
Sounds great, but to be fair, what are we looking at in terms of improvements? Any real reason to replay any of these, or will it be a case of “if you haven’t played them yet, here’s a slightly better version for you to try”?
Admittedly, the fact that they’re free means there’s no real downside, so it’s not like it’s any skin off my nose either way, but on the other hand, if there’s little in the way of improvements, then there’s little to get excited about either.
@BRT15 God of war on PS Plus connection didn't get the upgrade?
Everyday I dont have a PS5 hurts me more and more.
That's awesome!
I haven't played RE2.
Might have to revisit RE3 and Village.
Man... 2 still looks insanely good. Wonder what they will enhance...
After just finishing RE1 for the first time, I was about to jump into RE2, but Cyberpunk dropped that patch, so I jumped into that instead. The gaming gods have saved me again!!!
Time to plat Resi 2! Free upgrade aswell 👌
