A new season of Stranger Things will air in May, and Far Cry 6 wants to get you in the mood. An update, available now, adds an entirely new mission strand to Ubisoft’s open world shooter, and it’s free for anyone who owns the title. Furthermore, if you haven’t taken a trip to Yara yet, the entire game is free to download and play until Sunday, on both the PlayStation 5 and PS4.
While it doesn’t really make narrative sense for the Upside Down to be integrated into Far Cry 6, you’ve got to remember this is a title that also found you fighting alongside Danny Trejo, so switch off your brain for a little bit. The presentation actually looks really strong here, with the Mind Flayer and Demogorgon both well represented – it might be the closest we get to a Stranger Things FPS.
“Players will be able to explore recreations of iconic locations inspired by the Stranger Things series,” the press release explains, “including a hidden bunker and an abandoned laboratory.” As protagonist Dani Rojas, you’ll be heading into the Yaran horrorscape in search of Chorizo – the cute little trundle dog from the core campaign.
Alright, so it looks a little bit silly and it’s clearly been shoehorned in as some kind of cross marketing opportunity, but it’s Stranger Things in a decent Far Cry game – and, most importantly of all, it’s free. The mission apparently takes approximately an hour or so to complete, and there’s no doubt we’ll be digging out our copy to give this a try.

I got an email this morning from Ubi with the title
"Chorizo is missing and needs your help!"
That was all I needed to start the download. I am coming little buddy 😄
Ooh, defo re-installing the game for this.
I had to put FC6 on the external hard drive to make room for all the other open world games on my PS5 but this sounds cool! Might have to get around to this at some point.
Excited to play this, love this game! 100 hours in and I'm still going with things to do. If you are jumping in fresh, I also recommend the Danny Trejo® mission, listed as "Dani & Danny vs Everybody", it's pretty funny
Cool word up son
I wanted to check it out but turns out I can’t. Unable to launch the game without a PS4 disc copy that I am no longer in possession of. What a joke, so much for a “free weekend”…
Tore through it last night not too shabby. Took me around an hour+
Did they ever fix the choppy cutscenes or are they still running below 30 FPS while the game runs at 60?
@jmac1686 they didn’t seem to be as … unstable; the question will always arise do we want cinematic frame rates for said cutscenes?
Do you have to play the base game in anyway to try out the Stranger Things crossover? Got to be honest: I didn’t enjoy my time with Far Cry 6, don’t want to go back to the base game, but… I’d like to try this.
This is probably the coolest idea I've seen in a long time. And what better motivation that saving Chorizo?
Anyone wanting to try the free weekend, bare in mind you won't unlock any trophies.
It won't even show up in your library. Its a demo according to Sony so no trophy support.
Hhhmmm not sure if it’s me having these problems but I own and completed the base game. it was installed on my PS5. However, the DLC, specifically the season pass content isn’t showing as free at all.
I deleted this version and downloaded the free trial version from the PS store and the DLC / add ons are blanked off and can’t be accessed.
Anyone else having this problem?
@lolwhatno
Well, I Do not find them any worse than the ones I get from Broadway.com.
It also has more to do with my obsession with Chorizo (and his squeaky wheel) than how well made the email actually is 😊
@Netret0120 So weird. On PC and Xbox you can earn achievements like normal. Why is PlayStation left out I wonder?
@Roqka
Very strange indeed. My friends with ps4 and ps5 had the same issue
I checked on reddit and confirmed it
This is pretty awesome
Trailer was dope, will definitely play this later if it's not a limited time mission.
This looks really good! Unfortunately, I feel FarCry 6 is a step backwards in the series. The lack of a skill tree, making enemies bullet sponges, the totally broken and unnecessary ammo system, and on and on.
I'm done with the series until they make a big change.
The whole vibe of this add-on mission is brilliant, from the opening TV like chapters and official music to the creatures from the show. It's just spoilt a little by typical gameplay segments. It was genuinely creepy in places though and it was great to play as Dani again.
