The Evolution Championship Series, or Evo as it's more commonly known, is the world's biggest fighting game event, and this year's lineup has just been announced. There are no real surprises here (outside of Nintendo denying Super Smash Bros. entry, if that even counts as a surprise), but the roster is still rather stacked.
Here are the nine games that will be taking to the main stage at Evo 2022:
- Street Fighter V
- Guilty Gear Strive
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Tekken 7
- King of Fighters XV
- Melty Blood: Type Lumina
- Dragon Ball FighterZ
- Granblue Fantasy Versus
- Skullgirls 2nd Encore
Evo 2022 will feature open tournaments for all of these games and more. If you're thinking about competing, then you can sign up through the official website. Evo 2022 is set to take place between the 5th and 7th August, in Las Vegas.
It should also be noted that this will be the first in-person Evo since the coronavirus pandemic began. It's also the first offline Evo since Sony acquired the event back in March 2021 — last year's Evo being an online event only.
It's not just about the tournaments, though. In many ways, Evo has become the 'E3 of fighting games' — a great time and place for publishers to reveal new games or provide significant updates on existing projects. It's very likely that the recently announced Street Fighter 6 will show up in a big way, and we could even see heavily rumoured titles like Tekken 8 make an appearance.

Now I am waiting for MightyKeef to make a video about EVO 2022 now
@Royalblues 2 games?
Like smash bros ultimate and what else?
My Shaq Fu skills will continue to go underutilized for yet another year.
@anoyonmus Smash Ultimate and Melee (usually at least a side-event).
Incredibly unfortunate for Evo though. Smash has always been one of the most, if not the most, entered and watched entry at Evo. It's actually a pretty big blow to lose it.
Evo was massively popular well before any Smash games came to it. Street Fighter has carried it for years and will continue to do so. Even without the Smash nerds it's still going to be the most popular fighting game tournament by a landslide.
The only thing I'm good at in fighting games is button mashing so competing here is obviously out of the question 😅
@Cloud7794 well it is unfortunate but you can't really blame nintendo for not wanting smash bros at EVO. They have their own tournament with panda iirc.
Skull girls lets go!
Nice list of games here. I do wish Samurai Shodown made the cut though.
I prefer ARMS get spotlight.
Not really much there for me now Smash is gone. Wonder how many others will feel the same.
I was actually going to compete in the Soul Calibur VI event in the year 2020 but the pandemic happened and you know the rest of the story.
Unfortunately Soul Calibur VI will not be a main event game but I hope it is a side tournament. If so I will still go and compete in it even though it is a side tournament.
Looking forward to this year's EVO and it is great to have it back as an event people can attend.
@anoyonmus It's a whole circuit, not just a single tournament. It's like the Capcom Pro Your in a way, which has no issues allowing their game in Evo and still holding their circuit. There was no logistical reason to not have Smash at Evo as players would have flown out for both as they do for most other tourneys. They still seemingly allow Summit, Genesis, CEO, and just about all other tourneys but Evo, despite having their own Circuit.
I think there's a good chance Nintendo just doesn't want to have Smash at a Sony event. That's very in line with how they tend to do business anyways. Either that or it's another attempt at controlling the Smash scene with an iron fist.
Of course, it's their volition to disallow it, but as a member of the competitive Smash community I really hate how Nintendo tries to heavily moderate, monopolize, and often destroy, the competitive Smash community. They have a long history of specifically targeting Smash in a tournament setting.
Been expecting Sony to Acquire Arc System Works ever since they bought in to EVO.
I guess not everyone needs to be bought.
But anyway, I'm looking forward to it this year.
I started watching the PlayStation tournaments on YouTube during the lockdowns, and I love watching the Granblue Fantasy Versus matches.
I even bought the game, and Guilty Gear Strive, only to confirm my suspicions that I am muck at both 😂
Love watching those online fights though.
I know losing Smash is a big deal for many but thankfully competitive Smash never really clicked for me. I'm much more into watching the more traditional fighting games so I'm most excited to see in person Tekken and of course Street Fighter V competition. This will also probably be the last Evo for SFV since SF6 is officially on its way. I'm glad it looks like it will get one more in person EVO before SF6 takes over. Looking forward to it!
They should totally put MvC2 back in. There's plenty of people who would love to see that back in action. I remember how hyped the matches were. Even UMvC3. Hell put USF4 in. Why not?!
@Rafie It's probably just because of sponsorship deals. Publishers like Capcom want their newest games on the main stage (in this case SFV) and not much else. It's a bit frustrating but Evo is so big that it pretty much needs the blessings of companies like Capcom or Bandai Namco to go ahead.
glad smash isn’t there . i miss when the franchise was casual as it was intended to be & i don’t like what it’s become . almost every match in ultimates online is a boring sweat-fest and it just feels like a another stale fighter wanna-be in the mix , when it was its charm as something that strayed away from all the same-y fighters that made it unique , but an overbearing crowd forced the franchise to be what they wanted it to be , instead of what it is .
& im glad mortal kombat 11 is there too , even though mk11 could’ve been a lot better . i’m just glad MK is there . we need some diversity with fighting games , too many animes and 2D-sprite fighters .
While Smash being excluded is kind of a shame, I'm hyped to watch GG Strive, Skullgirls and Tekken.
@Cloud7794 that is the reason
Sony would be profiting off of Nintendo IP. Ofc nintendo would not like that
@Eadgar who is your main?
Melty Blood, as a main-stage game at EVO?? I'd say that at least comes as a surprise, seeing as it's best known for being played in the bathrooms at fighting tournaments on 10-year-old laptops.
@nessisonett A lot of people but not enough to affect EVO.
Saw a lot of people bitching about the line up but the Melty and Skull Girls communities are in cloud 9 so i'm pretty satisfied with it.
I hope we can get a EVO with a live audience this year.
I’ll watch Skullgirls at least but yeah, without Smash there 90% of my interest in EVO is dead.
@Dr-M
My main is Ivy. She has been my main since the days of Soul Calibur II.
I do like Hilde as well, especially her VI iteration so I main her has well.
@GymratAmarillo It absolutely is enough to affect Evo, unfortunately. Using 2019 Evo as the last in-person Evo: Smash Ultimate had about 3500 entrants with the second-place game, SFV, having about 1900. Total attendance was about 14,300, putting smash at about 25% of total entrants alone. It was also both the game with the most viewers and had the highest number of hours watched, though not by as an extreme margin.
This hurts Evo in a big way, and is generally bad for the Smash community as a whole. If by "not affect" you mean "It won't shut down Evo," you're correct, but it does reduce it's profitability and heavily reduces engagement. Losing potentially a full quarter of your attendance and 33% of your viewership is not what you want to see.
@Cloud7794 I was totally talking about it not shutting down the event. I understand the impact ultimate has as a whole in every tournament (viewers and money) it is but Sony and the other company being now the owners they understand the level of profits to be expected since Nintendo made their decision and have to take the hit and continue with the show.
Now, I'm just a fan of watching EVO so when it comes to the relevance the tournament has and the viewers, Fighterz had more viewers than any game in 2018 and had similar number in 2019 and even SFV (as much hated as it is online lol) had close numbers reaching the max of 80k viewers. So the fact that the 100k who watch smash won't watch EVO anymore doesn't mean another 100k is not going to watch the other games and that's the only thing you as an organizer of this kind of events has to work with. Also viewers are important in the search of partners and sponsors but sony (being a big vg company) is alone a reason for companies to invest in the tournament.
For short they will lose the money from attendance but they will hardly lose more than that and the show will still be great to go and to watch.
