As the cinematic run for Uncharted nears its conclusion, PlayStation Productions has to be happy with its first effort. According to The Numbers, the film has pulled around $339 million in ticket sales worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing video game movie of all time. It’s unlikely to catch the likes of Warcraft or Detective Pikachu, but it could yet creep past The Angry Birds Movie, which sits at around $352 million.
Sony Pictures recently indicated that the adaptation represented the beginning of a “new hit movie franchise” for the firm, but a sequel has yet to be announced – even though a post-credits scene appears to set one up. The organisation is also working on other big screen adaptations of PlayStation properties, including Ghost of Tsushima.

I saw this a few weeks ago and I thought it was a fun movie.
As someone who played all the games, I could probably point out a ton of stuff “wrong” with it; but I shut my brain off and simply enjoyed the ride - which is what these kinds of movies are all about, right?!
Given my avatar, it's obvious that I went and supported the movie. It didn't really feel like Uncharted though and I expected as much given the casting. Instead, I took the movie as a globe trotting fortune seeking adventure film.
For those that have yet to see it... the movie, it's not as good as Indiana Jones or even National Treasure, but it's better than the first two Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider movies. Take that for what it's worth.
What's not to like? Custard? Good. Jam? Good. Meat? GOOD.
I loved it. It’s not an exact copy of the games but it was still a really fun movie. Definitely up for a sequel.
I hear positive sounds i think this is the best way to look at it like a fun movie and just dont look at it like the game
Keep em coming Sony! Need some mindless fun these days!
@BritneyfR_ee It tastes like feet!
I haven’t actually seen this yet, but I am interested and will watch it once it hits iTunes. From the trailers, it doesn’t actually look like a great Uncharted movie, but it still looks like a fun treasure hunt pic nonetheless
Nolan North cameo. 10/10.
Waiting for the 4K blu-ray to drop. It seems like a harmless enough way to spend an evening.
Phew, thanks for this, nearly forgot. Still showing at my cinema!
As a big fan of the franchise, I enjoyed it much more then I expected.
I do love these types of movies in general but there were enough nods to the games that it felt pretty good as an ‘uncharted’ movie but didn’t retread the games too much which was refreshing.
Nolan north cameo is probably my favorite cameo of all time.
Spoiler alert:
My only gripe was the lack of supernatural enemies. Hopefully the sequel will follow the first game with them tho.
Not surprising considering 1) most movie adaptations of games are ****, and 2) Tom Holland is riding high from the success of the Spiderman films
I didnt like uncharted film as i played the games but i liked warcraft as i havent played the games
Good for them. It's a surprisingly fun watch. I'm looking forward to the sequel whenever it comes around. I wonder if Elena will be in the next one.
Surprised that didn't go to Detective Pikachu tbh.
I'm of the, I guess, minority opinion that if the only way to make the film cash-raining-from-the-sky successful is to just cast big name stars with little regard for source material than I'd rather they just not make these movies. I mean they clearly aren't for the video game nerds that made the movie feasible in the first place.
Not to say I want carbon copies but the characters you've come to know in game should resemble the characters you see on the big screen imho. Not just oh he's with SonyPictures and he's so hot right now.
But like I said, dissenting opinion.
People at work say it is a fun movie. Not seen it yet, but love the games.
Warcraft? I watch a lot of bad movies, kind of my thing, but I've watched the trailer for that a few times now and could never bring myself to watch the entire film. I'd watch Monster Hunter just for Milla before Warcraft and MH looks atrocious.
Uncharted was good enough, my wife and kids liked it too.
More impressively, even as a huge fan of the games, I enjoyed the movie. Can't always say that, but eventhough there are some problems, this one, like the first Sonic movie (hopefully the second is good, too), at least tried to respect the source material. Nice to see after the you know what show that was Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.
@Nightcrawler71 it is most certainly surprising, since many film stars "riding high from the success of" x movie immediately went to on to star in movies that flopped. That also includes Tom's recent non-Spider man movies.
Again, Uncharted has performed much better than Warcraft in the US where they get a bigger cut from ticket sales:
Warcraft:
Gross US & Canada: $47,365,290
Gross worldwide: $439,048,914
Uncharted:
Gross US & Canada: $127,943,061
Gross worldwide: $339,343,061
I was a hardcore World of Warcraft player but man that movie was pure trash. Uncharted looks a pretty decent movie adaptation
I enjoy movies based on Video Game intellectual properties.
My favorites to date have been Uncharted, Prince of Persia, Wing Commander, Mortal Kombat (original and reboot), and the first Resident Evil movie (sequels not so much).
The Tomb Raider and Hitman movies have been fine action movies. Rampage was a good creature feature. Sonic, Detective Pikachu and the Angry Birds movies been good family movies. Halo, Dead Rising, and Resident Evil have fine animated movies. Silent Hill made for really good horror movie.
Looking forward to new Halo TV Series starting on Paramount+.
@dimi I think it shows just how hard it is to translate games into a movie experience that meets fans' expectations - remember it was directed by a dedicated WOW player who has proved himself to be a really capable director - see Moon for reference.
@naruball Warcraft's box office was pretty much carried by China, yeah.
@GamingFan4Lyf Agreed. Great movie for what it is. Good old fashioned fun.
I'd love for a video game adaptation to be so good, it can beat all the other video game movies without any popular actor.
Really enjoyed the movie and can't wait to watch it again in 4K. I still don't like the actor choices but they played the role well so I wouldn't mind seeing them return for a sequel. Better to not think too much of the games and treat the movie as it's own thing. The games will always be better but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the movie too.
@Marquez I love the movie Moon. I’ve seen it a few times. Didn’t realise David Bowie’s Son also directed the Warcraft movie? Also did not realise there was a sequel to Moon released in 2018 called Mute.
Done my part. Watched it 3 times on the big screen.
On opening day alone, with my sister & then the wife & friends.
It’ll be interesting how they’ll take the movie forwards. The movie was a bit of a mashup between UC1-4..
Let’s get Jason Statham as Charlie Cutter for the sequel.
@cusman I really liked Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within but I understand that’s not really connected to the video games, which I haven’t played.
@BritneyfR_ee Mute is a wild ride, I really enjoyed it. Some top performances, make sure you see it!
I’ve played WoW since it came out. Was playing it this morning. Not in a million years would I think of watching the movie. 😅
I can't really see myself buying Uncharted.
To say it's good by 'game movie' standards, isn't enought.
The off-character casting makes this feel like sneaky cash-in.
@GamerDad66 You say the ‘off character casting’ puts you off without seeing it.
I’m not suggesting you should spend your money blindly, but as a fan of Uncharted the movie did it justice in ways people going in wouldn’t expect it.
The movie was stupid fun. Went seeing it without any expectations and it was an entertaining enough romp. Somehow Nolan Norths small cameo did it for me... At least they didn't forget where they were coming from and I think the casting for Chloe was spot on
@FatWormBlowsASparky
Oh but you should... Only played the old Warcraft games, but the movie was pretty decent.
Uncharted film deserves the high grossing value! I look forward to watching the inevitable sequel(s).
