Yes, that's right — a new update has been released for Astro's Playroom, the brilliant PlayStation 5 pack-in title. It's available to download and install now, taking the game to version 01.700.000. In case you were wondering, this patch comes almost a full year since the previous update to the game.
So, what does this new update do? Well, we've yet to track down the official patch notes, but a few people online purportedly know what's included. Here's what the patch allegedly does:
- Added performance improvements.
- Added gameplay optimizations.
- Fixed an issue that caused framerate drops.
- Added various stability improvements.
- Fixed sporadic crashes.
- Addressed audio related issues.
- Other minor bug fixes.
Weighing in at 158MB, it's only a small patch, so it won't take you very long to get the game updated. To be honest, we're not sure how the game could be better optimised; it's got to be one of the cleanest, least buggy games we've played in recent memory. Still, developer Team Asobi is clearly a talented bunch, and we're happy to see a great game improved even further.

This game was perfect. Can’t see how they could make any further improvements!
When I first saw the headline I assumed that they just randomly added a new level or something just because the game was already in great place performance-wise! Asobi is for sure the 1st party developer I'm most intrigued to see whatever is next from them.
My son still plays it all the time (completed it god knows how many times!) and it actually does crash from time to time for him so hopefully this will fix that
Got my PS5 on launch day, never touched Astro’s Playroom.
What’s it like? Platformer à la Ratchet and Clank?
This game made me feel like a kid again and I was bathing in pure PlayStation nostalgia for many hours. And OMG, that soundtrack. This was the best trip down memory lane I could've imagined.
@Korgon There are probably working on Astro Bot 2 for PSVR2, so no new levels for Astro‘s Playroom. I assume that the technical improvements for Playroom are a direct result of and test balloon for the enhanced engine, which is in development for Astro Bot 2.
@Relygon Much better!
Haha this is a surprise
Would love to see a dlc or a full price successor.
Game was stunning and a fantastic entry in the world of the ps5.
@Max_the_German sounds legit!
@Relygon feel free to play it.
Relatively simple Jump n Run with fantastic dual sense features.
Also there are a lot of Easter eggs and nearly any kind of PlayStation hardware that have been released as a collectible.
Highly recommended. A few hours for the platinum trophy and very very well worth it
This game shouldn't have been as good as it is, for what it is! And i'm so happy it is so good, for what it is.
Loved the game and went for the Platinum Trophy!
This game is waaay to good for a free one.
Can't wait to see what they develop next!
@Relygon it’s an absolute must play and probably the best game to fully realise all of the dualsense’s features. The features of the controller really shine in this game! Very few games have come close.
It’s probably a game more akin to Mario Odyssey / Mario Galaxy but it pays beautiful tribute to every PlayStation generation from PS1 to present.
All this time later, pound for pound, Astro’s Playroom is still the most fun I’ve had on PS5 to date. It’s that good.
@Ward_ting @Reeneman @Max_the_German Thanks all. I’ll be sure to give it a shot!
Brilliant game and worth purchasing a PS5 alone just for this game
@Max_the_German this has to be one of the sanest comment and probable hypothesis I’ve seen on any gaming site.
That goes without saying, I think it’s the same thing even though I haven’t played the game.
@Relygon play it, it's fantastic!
Still the most perfect platformer (and PlayStation homage!) ever. Insanely adorable and just plain FUN. 😺
@Relygon You're doing it wrong. It's going to be the first game I play on PS5 when I can get one.
LOVE this game. Pure fun! 10 out of 10.
Why? It's running already perfect.
I would take a DLC with kisses
@Apfelschteiner Clearly. It was pre-installed so I immediately uninstalled the game thinking it was your usual pre-installed crapware.
@ecin They obviously do this kind of tests of improved engines regularly. The massively reduced loading times with the 2019 patch of The Last of Us Remastered were obviously result of a piece of code from the 2020’s TLoU2. Another example: Online play for Super Mario Party, which was added with the late patch 1.1.0, was an early test for Mario Party Superstars. This kind of patch is always a good indication for unannounced sequels!
Loved this game so much and still the best use of DualSense to date.
This is legit a top 10 all-time favorite for me. I could gush about Astro's Playroom for hours. I'm really, really excited to see what Team Asobi is working on next.
Headline: "Here are the patch notes"
Article: "We've yet to track down the official patch notes"
Anyway, it's a cracking game. For me, nothing has beaten it on the PS5 in terms of pure enjoyment.
I still haven't played this. It's just been sitting on my PS5 since I bought it March 2021.
@Relygon Would take you literally 2 minutes to try out... given it is downloaded.
@Apfelschteiner was my first played game when I got my PS5. Even though I started Demon's Souls right after Astro's, I think Astro's is an amazing little game.
Interesting. I don’t remember any issues while playing it on my brothers PS5 back when I lived there. Perhaps this update is arriving because they’re working on another game (presumably another Astro Bot game) using the same engine. Would make sense if it isn’t too difficult to transfer the optimizations to a pre-existing title. The developers get to test their optimizations on pre-existing games and consumers benefit from it.
AWW I was hoping for some sort of DLC new levels Oh well & I didn't notice any bugs in the game at all. It seemed perfect.
What I loved was that it was the first thing I played on getting my ps5.
I went from thinking that it was going to be just a performance jump to truly "next gen" cos of what this game did with the controller. A controller til that point I knew nothing about really.
Awesome little game.
I finished this cute little game not long after buying PS5. Nice for those that like to go back to it but for someone like me I haven't played it since then and I probably never will either.
Interestingly, I never got around playing it, but yesterday for some reason I decided to download it and today I saw there was an update and was quite surprised.
Very much looking forward to it.
It's a very small patch, and since the patch's supposed purposes include performance improvements, gameplay optimisations, addressing framerate drops, and stability improvements, is it possible its primary function is to enable the game to utilise VRR ahead of the forthcoming PS5 VRR update?
Given that the game comes preinstalled on all PS5 consoles, Sony might want to ensure that it, of all games, was immediately able to take advantage of VRR once enabled...
Wish they'd release this on the PS4 I know the point of the game is to show off the dualsense but I really enjoyed rescue mission & would like to play this
Had my PS5 on launch day, soon as I set it up. Astrobot was the first game I played, just amazing on every level. Still the best use of dualsense in my opinion.
Wonder if this is a potential sign of PS5 supply levels, and in turn Astro players, ramping up soon?
Either way, to echo literally everyone who's played it - it's brilliant.
Shame there's no new levels/content, but am happy they are keeping it updated.
Also would love to see some DLC or another full length Astro bot game.
Id love them to build on what they have created and add in a bit more content for AP. It was an absolute joy to play.
@Relygon It's like Crash bandicoot on steroids
It's so good a game!!
@Relygon
It’s a fantastic way of introducing the dualsense controller. Like how Wii felt for the first time, but 30x better. You can feel raindrops, the tension of a rubber band just before it snaps. The brushing feeling of running through grass followed by the thudding of running across wooden planks. As well as other features realistically mimicked in the technology.Well worth at least a half hour!!!
@KyleC541 Planning to give it a shot this weekend. Downloaded and ready.
While I’m not too keen on the DualSense (strictly for ergonomical reasons, it just doesn’t fit my hands, cramping like a bitch after just a few hours of usage unfortunately), I’m really impressed with its features. I think it is a real shame very few developers use them to their full potential. Much like the DualShock 4.
Everyone who's had a go on Astro's Playroom has loved it. Including my partner, who's not a big console gamer, loved it.
@Relygon
Oh please, try it. At launch I played it not enough and when I revisited it, I was in awe of the DS + the PS memorabilia + creativity + details ARE great. Not every DS inclusion is worthy but in this game (and Sackboy imo) it is! Very polished imo!
@Pusher2021 Ah, yes. Now after all recommendations here, I have actually spent some time with it. A rock solid platformer, indeed. Great game to fall back on after too much FPS and/or open-world stuff, hah.
@Relygon Not a Trophy hunter at all but I went for this one a 100% today
