Sony will not be tossing random retro releases on its priciest PS Plus Premium subscription tier! New correspondence from the company confirms that the 340 additional games added to the most expensive membership will comprise a “catalogue of beloved classic games” from the PS1, PS2, and PSP era. These will be available to download or stream. As previously reported, PS3 games will also be included, but will support streaming only.
The platform holder’s still being frustratingly secretive when it comes to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium’s game lineup. However, a collection of Syphon Filter games were recently rated for the PS5 and PS4, making their inclusion a certainty. Hopefully the platform holder is not stretching the definition of “beloved classic games” with its wording here – we’re expecting all killer and very little filler, please.
There’s still no word on whether this will be a mere ROM dump or if Sony’s emulation will come with additional features, like save states and potentially even rewind. Cross your fingers and hope for the best, we guess.

Just tell us if PS3 disc based games will be supported, allowing the catalogue to have a second life
If you share the 340 games by the 3 platforms (PS1, PS2 and PSP) that's 113 games each, less if counting PS3 games (85 games each) with that. I can't see there being that many though.
No because I don't know what exact games we're getting just give us a list
I just want the MGS games playable on PS4. They're the only games I really miss playing.
@Luigia if you mean the ability to insert a PS3 disc into the PS4/PS5 and play it, then no chance of that happening at all.
Realistically I’m hoping part of PS1 catalog includes Tomba 1&2, Legend of Dragoon and maybe Jersey Devil(though I’m not as sure if it’ll make the cut given the fact I don’t even think it ended up on PS3 as one of the PS1 classic games)
I'll probably just keep my existing PS+ subscription and hunt down a fully backwards compatible PS3. That should cover all the bases.
Hey, I want the filler! I’ve had way more fun playing that Don Bradman Cricket game and the garbage mini golf and paintball games from 2007 on PS Now than Killzone.
I think there are going to be a lot of disappointed people here when the services are fully revealed to us. Anticipating several articles in the coming months about how Sony have failed lol
MGS1 and Gran Turismo, pls
I don't know if focusing on beloved titles is the way to go. If a title is beloved then offs are it has been remade, remaster or rereleased and that there'll be superior ways to play it already. Focus should be on titles loss to time that people have not been able to play legally for a while
Why not just use the playstation classic as an emulator. It does real well, even with n64 games.
Polite pass. I still have my PS2 slim to play PS1 and PS2 games. They've detailed almost nothing... not what games... not what features. They're going to have to bust their @ss to convince me to pay that much.
This is barely newsworthy considering we don't know what the games actually are. All this article seems to hinge on is two words that feature in the general blurb for PS Plus Premium ("beloved classics"). I mean, they're not exactly going to say "A catalog of steaming piles of dung". As far as I'm concerned until games are named, it means nothing
I hope they don't mean that there will only be 60 PS4 /PS5 games ... ATM ps now has over 600 titles, but lost like 90 titles in two months time.
Majority of them are PS4 downloadable games and if they saying the premium sub will have 400 titles to download from at all time, it means even more of the games will be removed before overhaul. Also, they better fix the crap with PS4/PS5 version. If game has a PS5 version, I want it to be accessible. They can't possible keep same garbage approach they do now, where they only let PS4 version games to be downloaded...
It really seems like it's going to be a huge disappointment from the lack of info etc
MGS and SOCOM please.
@Bamila
I wouldn't be surprised if they still only let ps5 owners play only PS4 versions. Welcome to Jim Ryan's world.
Most important question for me is whether there is a new trophy challenge campaign for these old games, or if it’s just the same old. Will be a missed opportunity if trophy challenges aren’t included, the journey to platinum for me is a whole new campaign for each game, often as much or more fun than the linear narrative campaign.
No interest in rewind but save states would be good. I don’t have as much time as I used to and being able to drop in and out of games by saving at will is more important than it was.
@Luigia
You do know that the PS4 and 5 can't play physical PS3 games?
I hate this, I legitimately hate all of this. Just give us the option to buy the games we want a la carte. I don't want or need another superfluous and expensive subscription service I'll never use 99% of the advertised features of.
@suikoden really? I thought the PS5 just couldn’t play PS1 and 2 discs? Am I mistaken?
@Barryburton97 your almost making me cry 🥲
@Luigia The PS5 can only play PS5 discs, there is zero backwards compatibility for any previous system.
@GeneJacket
Wrong it can play PS4 games , PS4 had no backwards compatibility
@suikoden what a bummer! So PS5 can’t ever play anything disc based other than PS4 or PS5 🥲
@GeneJacket nooooooooooo 🥲🥲
@suikoden Blughjdfbshjty, you're right. My bad, I have the digital vPS5, I always forget it can use PS4 discs.
If it has Silent Hill, I'll be a happy man
Ahhh beloved classics, so still no new info then. What an anti consumer joke
PlayStation is doing nothing to help themselves here. For all we know this just going to be mostly games already on PSNow or PS3/Vita stores in the case of PS1 and 2 games. Nothing really new, nothing but a rom drop and an excuse to allow PlayStation to close those stores finally. I'd love them to prove that wrong.
Wait a download option for ps1, ps2, and psp games?
Well these beloved classics better have trophy support, or ill be sticking with my basic Plus membership.
@Amusei I’d love Konami to port the incredible Silent Hill 2 Definitive Edition that the fans made on PC. Easily the best version of an already classic game.
Also important to note that a lot of the biggest games people would want likely aren't going to be present because of long expired licensing contracts Sony isn't going to negotiate new deals for.
Remember how the first Wipeout was the only game in the series offered as a Playstation Classic on PS3, that's because expired music licensing keep XL/2097 and 3 from being offered. Be prepared for a lot of that.
@GeneJacket yeah everything that has licences or ads will 100% not return. Capcom had a lot of trouble with bringing Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 to the PS3 Store bc the Games have an real-life vending Machiene
Woah woah woah. Don't diss the filler. Give me the filler.
Will these games be available for purchase, outside of the program?
@FuzzieGinge88 mgs 2, 3, peacewalker and revengence are on the xbo ecosystem. I'm sure they're on the ps store, as well.
Just going to keep posting this list in the hopes that the universe will make it happen.
A subscription is not really how I want to access retro games, I don't bother with NSO, except the odd month here or there. Plus there may be a few games here I am interested in, but I already purchased them digitally as PS1 / PS2 classics from the PS3 days. Or even PS3 games I own digitally. Would be good if I got access to those titles on PS4 / PS5 without paying an additional sub, but realise wont happen.
Syphon filter is the g.o.a.t. 🐐. 👑.my favorite ps1 games ever.cant wait to play those legendary games again.word up son
Based on the selection of games that are available on the PlayStation Classic it seems that Sony’s definition of classic differs from everyone else’s.
@Nepp67 yes, only PS3 games need to be streamed. Others can be downloaded or streamed.
@nessisonett Hell, I'll take just the original without updated graphics. Anything but the disaster that the HD collection is. 💔
I smell dead fish. Ergo, I think SONY is so secretive, because those games in "retro collection" will be those which were remaked or already re-released for PS4.
Xenogears
Do it
So I'm good with just my Vita then. I'm actually relieved. Not interested in streaming PS3 games and the rest is available on Vita (hacked, but still).
Hopefully we don't get the PAL games in North America like what happened with the PlayStation Classic. And better classics too.
Actually I hope for more underrated gems. I'd be somewhat annoyed if it's only all the overexposed stuff like crash bandicoot, tomb raider etc.
Wait so it's confirmed there will be 340 PS1, PSP, PS2, PS3 games?
"Beloved" is a double-edged statement for something like this. The games in it will arguably be "good" but it will probably also be an extremely safe, boring list.
Do e.g. the Drakengard games count as "beloved" for our dear PR team at PlayStation? Because I sure would like to play those, but I guess I won't know if they're "beloved" for several more weeks.
How about Yakuza Dead Souls, a spin-off of mixed reception from a franchise I love and would rather not have to buy a whole PS3 to try? And Lollipop Chainsaw? The list goes on...
@Luigia PS3 will be streaming only, like it's always been on PS Now.
Sony would have to build a PS3 Emulator for PS5 to play PS3 discs, and there's no sign of that anytime soon. And likely no strong business case for it.
@Ristar24 I agree, it'd be nice if we could access PS3 titles we own digitally for no additional cost, at least via streaming.
They should be aiming to put every single first party game on there for starters, I still have zero interest but that should absolutely be the aim
@AFCC Yes.
I am seriously hoping that Sony includes some of the PS1, PS2, and PSP games I never got to experience when I was younger.
Give me them all! I bleed Dino Crisis.
I still play many classics on my PSP every week.
Release Crash Bash with online multiplayer connectivity also 👌🏻
Oh and all the Resident Evil Outbreak games.
Listen, Sony 🤨
You put Brave Fencer Musashi on there, or don’t bother.
@get2sammyb that's a surprisingly large number! And that's extra from the other 400 titles?
Team Buddies and Diablo please
@Luigia i can easily tell you no. there won't be ps3 disc support.
Tbh I don't care what games they are, I still really just want trophy support.
I still have my 60GB PS3 that plays PS2 and PS1 games. If I want to play the classics, I'll go into my basement and play the classics.
340 isn't a whole lot when it comes to classics. I say they are just adding what they had on the ps3 store to ps now thinking they did something great. wConsidering we already bought them digitally or own copies still for the original system. Not that I wouldn't love to have them all playable on the current console, Its I don't want to pay for what I aleady own again. Put the hard to find gems or cult classics on there. One collector told me he had figured the number at somewhere around 50 thousand titles that had a physical release so far up to the PlayStation and another 20 to 30 something thousand of digital only releases. So the numbers they are throwing out hoping to make another 10 dollars per month per sub but they are only getting you access to less than 1% of the total catalog. Prepare for disappointment because in the end they are doing nothing different than what they are doing now but they are charging more for access to it.
Random retro realises can be fun too though. There's only so many "beloved" titles and even fewer from the PS1 gen that still hold up. If they are going to go the extra mile and add achievements I can see why they would want to keep the catalogue down to games that appeal to the broadest audience.
@FuzzieGinge88
I would pay full price just to have MGS 1-4 on PS5.
Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire 4, Legend of Legia, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, Tenchu, Twisted Metal World Tour. There is so many great older games i would love to see remastered or remade i would be extatic to play those games.
@Shepherd_Tallon Just so you know, GrimGrimoire is getting a re-release on modern consoles
@GeneJacket Yeah, I would love if they made all the games they end up putting on this service available a la carte. Really not into the idea of being tethered to a subscription
@Andee I saw 🤤🤤🤤
It's only for Japan atm, but I'm hoping it comes this way too.
Not expecting much to be honest. I don’t know why, assuming the person is a functioning adult, there is this feverish desire to have a company pre-select one’s gaming habits.
I’ve seen it with Plus and Gold, and of course GamePass, and now with whatever Premium ends up being. Some will only play what these companies curate for them.
It’s such a waste of time and energy to “hope” your favorite games make the cut. Time and energy is more important than money. Create your own collection that can’t be taken from you on a whim if you crave to play titles from the past so badly.
And finally, trophy hunters, just swallow the bitter pill now instead of waiting until June and beyond. There is zero chance that these retro games get outfitted with them.
...and hopefully increased resolution. So we are not playing blurry games
