Manchester United still promotes Konami’s soccer simulation travesty eFootball at Old Trafford, which perhaps says a lot about the state of the formerly great club. Unlike the north-western Premier League team, however, eFootball is at least about to get a bit better. The aforementioned Japanese publisher has announced that v1.00 will release on the PlayStation 5 and PS4 later this month, 14th April, and will bring with it some pretty big gameplay improvements.
“The development team has been hard at work since to regain the trust of our esteemed fans, as well as to make the game even more enjoyable for soccer fans around the world,” a statement explains. “As part of our commitment to improving the game, we have added new commands and numerous elements – both offensive and defensive – that are prevalent in the modern game of soccer. We have also readjusted the balance of the game and fixed bugs to ensure an enjoyable gaming experience.”
While it would be easy to roast Konami here, the updates are extensive – to the degree where the publisher is describing it as a New Soccer Game in its press release. Just some of the headline alterations include a rewrite to defensive gameplay, including the addition of a shoulder charge command and the reintroduction of pressing. The pace of passing has also been significantly increased, while a new command for Hollywood-style passes has been incorporated.
The company’s also made significant improvements to shooting, dribbling, and online connectivity. You’ll now be able to save your custom tactics and formations, which was an obvious feature conspicuously absent from the launch build. “This is just the tip of the iceberg, as we have implemented many other gameplay-related features and fixes,” the statement continues. “Please stay tuned, as we will be going through this ‘New Soccer Game’ in detail when the update goes live!”
In terms of new features and game modes, Konami’s finally adding its Ultimate Team-esque mode, named Dream Team. “In this mode, you will be able to choose your favourite players and managers when signing them,” the press release teases. “You can then develop your players to fit your personal playstyle, which means you have almost infinite freedom to shape the team to your liking. Build your ‘one and only Dream Team’ with your favorite players as well as players you have developed.”
There’s no word on when fan favourite single player features like Master League will be available, but to be fair it seems like Konami’s focus here has been on fixing the core gameplay. You can read the full statement on the game’s official website for more information on what’s changed, but is this enough to get you back on board? Let us know in the comments section below.

I forgot this even existed...
I might give it a try again just for curiosity.
This release was one of the greatest gifts EA has ever got.
I hope they've managed to improve it. Sounds like good changes, but the proof will be in the pudding.
Electronic Arts be quaking in their grossly filled Boots...Is the boy Bhatti still promising things he has no control over...there are whispers they are reversing the defending back to the original way....anyway back to RDR2 I just love antagonizing Dutch and Kieran then skipping off to collect plants.........and for Gawds sake Sony try to get SWOS Microsoft managed it .
@buckp25 How's it going these days?
I don't think many people care about this dreadful game after the disastrous but hilarious launch it had.
Fifa 14 still the best imo. Can't wait to see how bad this patch is lol
I am just praying this is playable. I delved into fifa this year as an alternative and the gameplay is just shockingly unfootball like.
I tried this a couple months back and it was hilariously terrible. Highlight is still the commentators shouting RONALDOOOO whenever he takes a tiny touch inside his own half.
@Number09 Yes! SWOS is what we need. Better than all these other games combined. Updated squads would be a marvel!
Tried it and never went back. As an offline player if they have improved it gameplay wise then fine, I'll give it a go again. If they're not offering offline modes though then it's a hard pass. Last time I tried it you could play as 9 teams and five minute matches. All I want is all the teams available, ten minute matches and some sort of edit mode. Can't be that big an ask can it?
@tomassi A team of Sensi nuts have a fully updated version running on Win 10 its all good but we are in 2022 and no SWOS on PS4 just don't understand it I'm going to have to look into this portable Steam Deck maybe get it on that.
damn, Sammy, shots fired, and as a man united supporter, these really hurt
I’ve always found it weird that they call it eFootball but constantly refer to it as a soccer.
What they need to do is redesign their website. I’m guessing it was done for free by a blind team of web developers.

@kejsi-sensei truth often does 😘
I'm ready to see if the game has improved. Nothing to lose trying.
I'll be happy to give it a shot and optimistic it will be an improvement from the original launch disaster. Konami have enough credit in the bank with me over the years to warrant another chance. Getting a bit bored of this year's FIFA now, so this may come at a good time.
What is this Soccer thing the makers of eFootball keep talking about? This game has a huge potential market, but by releasing a totally broken incomplete game they have left themselves so much to do. As it's free-to-play cross-play, I'll probably give it a chance depending on feedback on how much it has been improved.
Nothing wrong with it originally, Thunderbirds ragdoll mechanics and nightmare faces, perfection
