Sonic Origins’ various versions and permutations may be more dizzying than Sonic Adventure’s unwieldy camera, but there’s good news for Blue Blur fanboys: Headcannon has confirmed it’s been recruited for the project. Many of you will recognise the team for its work on Sonic Mania, although it has a long history with the character, having ported Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to smartphones in the past. These versions of the games are generally considered by the Sonic community to be definitive.
“Headcannon is proud to announce that we have been working with SEGA to re-create Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles for the upcoming Sonic Origins collection,” the studio said on social media. “This completes the official ‘remastering’ of the mainline classics and marks our fourth time out with Sonic the Hedgehog!”
In addition to the emulated 16-bit originals, Sonic Origins will also include a new Anniversary mode, which will present the games in widescreen and provide unlimited lives. With Headcannon’s involvement now confirmed, we can be pretty confident that they’ll be quality ports. Now all we need is to cross our fingers for a Sonic Mania sequel – come on, SEGA, you know you want to!

kool, they're in good hands then
Sonic Mania sequel for sure!!
It would be nice if someday they will remake all original games with the style and graphics of the classic stages in Sonic generations. I loved playing the classic stages in that game and wished you could also play as classic tails and knuckles in those. But great news that they are still working with the mania team.
Nice, now I know the game will be great although the publisher (sega) suck. I think I'll buy the game digital deluxe version when it's discounted and the price is at least the same as the original base price now.
Headcannon is probably wondering WTF Sega is doing with all this dlc nonsense and spreadsheets.
@wiiware How does Sega suck exactly?
Great to hear. Makes sense given the animations being added.
@Apfelschteiner You only need to take a look at their release "strategy" for this collection. Then again, most bigger publishers do the same so. They all suck, just in different ways.
Also not going ahead with Mania 2 is kinda sucky.
@jrt87 Nah, I will not be boycotting. Been waiting for a definitive widescreen port of 3&K like the enhanced mobile versions for years. Dedicated Classic Sonic fans know the value of this collection. These are far more than just roms shoved on a compilation like most of those SEGA compilations they put out.
That said, the DLC practices on this collection is bad.
And with that, I'm in
This is all that I needed to hear. Sign me up!
@Apfelschteiner Read the linked article by pushsquare to see the game versions and permutations.
Cracking stuff. Mania was well worth it and so too will this be 😍
@jrt87 Plus the updated versions of each game seem to be custom built based on Christian Whitehead's painstakingly made engine derived from systematic observation of the originals. This is not just ROMs.
Sonic Mania sequel would be dope, as well as a collection of the Sonic Adventure games.
@jrt87 no, £36.99 is the deluxe edition which includes everything and to say these are just the MD roms is nonsense
Picking this up almost purely in the hopes that it'll mean a sequel to Mania is on the way. Such a good game.
Would much prefer Mania 2, I'm still wondering why Sega won't make a 2D Sonic Maker, i'd love to make / share / play community levels
