While the critical reception to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is clearly very mixed, it seems cinema-goers have shown up in droves to support the Paramount Pictures sequel. The film made its debut this past weekend in the United States, where it took $71 million at the box office. This is the biggest opening weekend for a movie based on a video game.
This figure also comfortably blasts past the first movie, with approximately 22 per cent more ticket sales than Sonic 1. Of course, it should be noted that the original arrived just as COVID-19 was becoming a major concern, meaning attendance at movie theatres was dwindling. Still, the sequel's initial performance is very impressive.
In comments to Deadline, Paramount's Chris Aronson called Sonic 2 "victory for Paramount and for the industry at large", commending the ability to grow the franchise. "The filmmakers did an amazing job of crafting a film that is both in service of Sonic’s legions of fans as well as the general and family audience," he says.
While it's not a perfect movie, we had a great time with it, especially all the Easter eggs and callbacks to the games. You can read our thoughts in our Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review.

“Of course, it should be noted that the original arrived at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning attendance at movie theatres was pretty much rock bottom.”
Sonic 1 released in theaters about 2 weeks before the world started taking covid-19 seriously and started doing lockdowns.
@darkswabber Amended the sentence, thanks
@darkswabber This. Sonic 1 was just before everything shutdown the first time. It was the last major film release before the pandemic reached the US. I remember thinking "Sonic will forever be the last movie I ever saw in a theater..."
Liked them both to be fair, 1st was better though. Littlun loved it though so that's all that matters.
Knuckles started well and then ended up doing his best Thor impression by the end. But enjoyable couple of hours spent.
I enjoyed watching the 1st on Netflix. It was great- so I’m not surprised. I would like to take the family at some point.
Awesome, movie looks like a blast. I really enjoyed the first one.
Glad its doing well. As i said in another article i loved it and its easily the best video game movie in my opinion.
I took the kids yesterday and they loved it. I thought it was decent as well having been tied more closely with what the early videogames portray. This movie covers the 2nd to 4th game. They even set up a 3rd movie appearing to skip the rest of Sega's hardware era and going into the post Dreamcast era of Sonic... aka... the dark years.
I did not expect the Sonic movies to be better than the Uncharted one, but here we are.
If Sony made Sonic it would be a blue painted Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as Eggman, just to be "hip". Sony with movies is like Ubisoft with games. Always trying to be cool yoo 🤟
I took my son to see it on Saturday and we both loved it. The theater was packed and erupting like we were watching a Star Wars or Avengers movie, it was unexpected, but added to the fun of the movie.
I wasn't really a fan of Sonic but after watching the first film l fell in love with him I even bought that SEGA Collection just to play the Sonic Pinball game which is AMAZING Saying that I have tried to get into the normal games but just can't really. Not sure why. Oh well.
Would go see this but Id have to see 1 first off
@Quintumply Really sorry but I feel the following is, while true. It's still unintentionally misleading-
"it should be noted that the original arrived just as COVID-19 was becoming a major concern, meaning attendance at movie theatres was dwindling"
The film launched domestically on February 14th. Covid was a thing then, but lockdown wasn't until a good month or so later around 19th March and later (23rd March in the UK).
It was only really the last week or two that it effected numbers up to the point going to the cinema was stopped in March entirely. Sonic 1 was definitely impacted by the pandemic, no doubt. But I feel it was negligible at launch. It was impacted mostly at the tail end of the theatrical release window.
My point being just that Sonic 2 numbers are even more impressive considering some people are still avoiding cinema now, certainly more than in mid February 2020, when people didn't realize how bad thing we're going to get.
Not quite sure why I had to share that but, I've just had a coffee and I'm killing some time so maybe that's why. 😃
first was good but haven't seen the second one yet, i hope its on Netflix
@huyi Sonic 2 is only in theaters, but should be available on Paramount Plus 45+ days after April 8th.
If your country doesn't have Paramount+, then Sonic 2 will drop on Netflix at some point...
