Just seven months after release, EA DICE is leaving behind one of the three core pillars of Battlefield 2042. The studio has confirmed it's no longer producing content for Hazard Zone, the new mode that was pitched as the series' own take on the intense experiences seen in Escape from Tarkov. This now means just the standard multiplayer and the retro focused Portal modes will be supported henceforth.
Revealed in a Battlefield Briefing blog post, it's explained that while Hazard Zone will still be playable, the mode won't be worked on anymore. "All of us on the team had great ambition and high hopes for this new Battlefield experience throughout our development, but we’re the first to hold our hands up and acknowledge that it hasn’t found the right home in Battlefield 2042 and that we’ll benefit greatly from letting our focus and energy stay on the modes we see you engaging most with."
Any urgent errors in the mode will be fixed, but future maps won't be built around Hazard Zone, and therefore won't be supported.
In other news, Battlefield 2042's first season of content finally begins next month after a delay, bringing with it new Specialists, maps, weapons, and gadgets. There'll also be a Battle Pass — a first for the series. Any new gameplay items will be tied to the free tier, while cosmetic bonuses are more for the paid option.
"Next month with the release of Season 1 we’ll see a big update that will not only bring this new content to the game, but also deliver new Quality of Life enhancements, fixes, and improvements that demonstrate our continued commitment to Battlefield 2042 and our mission of restoring the trust that many of you feel was hurt when we launched back in November of last year."

Feel bad for everyone who got suckered into buying this. Then again, what did you expect of an EA game?
They should be refunding those who bought this on day one
If it wasn’t working and people weren’t playing the mode much, it makes sense. Of course, everyone buying an online focused game should expect it to change massively with time these days, and ultimately become completely redundant.
Interested to know how this mode plays, exactly?
@kyleforrester87 Still kinda cheap drop a mode and as cherry on top here is some extra paid content with your terrible running game does not sound that great does it. 😅
When they will be taken over it probably cant get any worse then it is now.
I actually gasped out loud when I saw this. I knew it had got a bad reception at launch but I thought something as big as any Battlefield would at least still be doing numbers!
It's very hard to do with some games but for the vast majority, especially these 'live service' games, it's better to wait probably a year after they release to buy them. Pretty much every game now is released incomplete and in need of multiple patches. If you buy it on day one there's a huge chance the game is dead within a few months ie. Anthem
@Flaming_Kaiser I guess the devs are just trying to get it done somehow. And I mean, if the mode is really underplayed, why not drop it I guess. This game seems to have generally been a victim of covid/work from home.
Will literally not buy another EA game, ruined this, ruined codemasters, pushing me back into Cod, which will most likely be crap, oh my days
Just glad I skipped this one. Waiting a few months (or longer) to buy a game recently is really proving to be a good strategy.
No spoilers!
They should cease supporting the dumpster fire know as Battlefield 2042 and actually give us a real Battlefield title in its place.
They need to bring back squad deathmatch and team deathmatch and release new maps..i still play this with a couple of mates on a wednesday evening but its starting to get a bit stale..still has some laugh out loud moments..
Battlefield and DICE have managed the feat of losing almost all old fans and gaining very few new ones with all the changes the made to the series. I don't know how everyone at the top of DICE and EA responsible for this mess still have their jobs, but I guess they are protected no matter how much they fail.
I'm a bit sad to see such an end to an old favourite, but at the same time I'm glad I didn't buy this travesty.
Its a crying shame when you consider how good bad company 1 & 2, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 all were. What a waste of a top tier multiplayer franchise.
And people wonder why "Boomer Shooters" are back in style. All these big multiplayer army shooters are so boring, copy/paste and uninspired. They exist solely to sell you skins for their "heroes"... somewhere along the line they forgot to make a fun game.
guess we know who won the 10 year COD vs BF war now huh ?
After all the updates, the game still Is annoying as hell, playing on PS5, your sat in a squad loading screen more often than not waiting for other players to join? I thought that was the big advantage of current gen? No loading screens? They could start the games with just bots.......... Then remove them as human players join? BUT NOOOOOOO, your sat waiting for players to join any game mode, people get impatient and leave and your sat waiting for even more to join 😕😕😕😕😕
The whole thing was a very bad idea implemented very very poorly. It's DEAD
And guys, you really need to play hell let loose, it's probably the best online game I've played and I'm 51.
If you miss the older BF games then give it a go but please watch some YT videos, read the field manual and take note of the onscreen tips, they're pretty essential.
After the last update in mid May its even better.
@kyleforrester87 Its a pity they bombed the release with the most BF games the last years especially the modern ones with or without Covid. Its almost a crime/joke in what state they delivered the games.
Maybe they should release the games the games in early access in discounted prices instead of releasing the games with really expensive versions they just dont seem able to pull it off.
Its a pity the games are fun but its terrible how much they damaged the brand name with the horrible releases such a shame.
@Styledvinny79 I've been trying to get a refund ever since release, I'm stuck in an endless loop with PS support, with them just telling me to wait for updates and me insisting that I want a refund and providing links and articles that show how broken the game is and how misinformed we all were. I don't expect to actually get the refund in the end, but I won't stop asking for it.
