Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has today been confirmed for a release in late October, but before then, those who pre-order the game will get their hands on the game early with an open beta. Access is granted by committing cash early to either the Cross-Gen Bundle or the Vault Edition, and perhaps most interesting is the pre-release test will be available first on PS5 and PS4.
This is the first real piece of evidence that Microsoft's acquisition of Activision isn't affecting the support of Sony systems at least in the short term, as this reinforces the marketing deal Sony holds with the franchise. Past titles like Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War have also handed open betas to PS5 and PS4 users before anyone else. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also expressed his desire to "keep Call of Duty on PlayStation" in the past, but with the deal not yet closed, this arrangement isn't something the Microsoft head could block in the first place.
As for what else you'll get for pre-ordering either of these two digital editions, the Cross-Gen Bundle is self-explanatory: both the PS4 and PS5 versions in one since there won't be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade. As for the Vault Edition, you get a Battle Pass and 50 Tier Skips, the Red Team 141 Operator Pack consisting of Ghost, Soap, Price, and Farah, and the FJX Cinder Weapon Vault. On top of that, there are also tokens for 10 hours of double XP and double weapon XP as well as the Ghost Legacy Pack, which includes 12 Operator skins and 10 weapon Blueprints.

Let's see if Xbox come out with "Best place to play". Holding the PlayStation versions back abit. Having the betas first on Xbox in future no doubt will be the norm.
Cool. Too bad the Modern Warfare 2019 campaign is pretty much unplayable on PS5
Ironic.
@pyrrhic_victory in what way? I replayed the entire campaign and had zero issues..crashed a fair few times on my base ps4..
Xbox players cheering for the Activision acquisition have to sit there and watch PlayStation players get their hand on the game first. Kinda awkward.
@Northern_munkey It was fine when I played it on my PS4 back when it came out, but earlier this year I tried it on PS5 and it crashes every time. Sometimes when loading a mission, but usually right after. I have the digital version, and I've tried reinstalling
Lol no thanks Activision I'm not putting down cash for this again like I did with modern warfare 2019 just to get ripped off when it turns into warzone featuring that game you payed for 🖕🏻
This has to be the most hilarious and ironic news I’ve seen so far this week.
So I have to preorder the game (which involves money on PS Store, unless that’s changed; I don’t preorder non-Nintendo games anymore due to getting burned one too many times) in order to get access to the Beta?
Well that’s dumb.
@hoffa007 they legitimately cannot, as the sale (if it does go through) will complete around this time next year. So straight up, they cannot touch any of the contracts or advertising this year.
@pyrrhic_victory strange..i have the physical version and i've had zero issues on the ps5..but saying that i have had issues with battlefield 5 on the ps5 but had none on the ps4..
damn , i wish it wasn’t cross-gen . the ps4 just leeching at this point
@ATaco
Not really Microsoft are clearly just following through on deals made before Activision's acquisition. Once Sony's COD deal comes to an end this will most likely become a Xbox exclusive thing going forward
@nomither6 I 100% agree
@Northern_munkey Yeah I initially had the physical version too which worked fine on PS4, sold it awhile back, then bought the digital on sale. That also worked fine on PS4, but when I tried playing it on PS5, that's when it started crashing nonstop
@sajoey this is true, I just meant future projects.
Ooooo will it be on gamepass though....? Exciting 😀
@OrtadragoonX @hoffa007 Heh have you been complaining about betas coming out first on PlayStation so far?
They, as well as others, have been doing that for awhile where preorders grant access to betas. Yeah it’s dumb but, like I said it’s not the first time, must be helping those preorders. I guess you can always cancel afterwards
@ATaco No different to Bethesda only releasing games on PlayStation since Xbox got them so far. Actually, this one probably worked out better…get a remake out of the way, then once the deals gone through gamepass gets the next actual new cod day 1… least you won’t have to pay £70 for it this end if it makes you feel better
@pyrrhic_victory hmm? Why is that?
@Bleachedsmiles
I’ve always felt that multiplatform games should be equal. I didn’t like it when Xbox 360 owners got map packs first back in the day, and I don’t like that PS4 owners got special perks and exclusive beta access either.
If a game releases on multiple consoles all versions should be identical. That’s the way I’ve always felt.
@ShutenDoji except that yes really. I'm not talking about future situations. In this situation Sony players are going to get to play the game first, it's a fact.
Bring it on, I had a blast with the last Modern Warfare.
I won't be pre-ordering this or buying full price, but will check out YouTube gameplay and launch reviews.
I'm sure the true and tested method of an Amazon preorder > Receive Code > Cancel preorder is still the way to go. I'll play the beta. Put a LOT of time in MW2019 before it become Warzone.
