It's been a minute since we heard anything about MultiVersus, but WB Games has put it back on our radar with new gameplay and info. The free-to-play platform fighter, starring a varied range of characters including DC heroes and classic cartoons, will be getting a closed alpha test, playable on both PS5 and PS4.
The alpha will be invite only, so if you're at all interested in getting an advance look at the game, you'll need to sign up via the official website. It takes place from 19th to 27th May, and will give players the chance to try one mode — 2 vs. 2 — and a handful of fighters from the initial roster.
The playable characters within the alpha test will include Batman, Shaggy, Bugs Bunny, and Arya Stark, which is an incredible combination. Presumably there will be a couple of others in the alpha, and obviously the full game will have plenty more, like Tom & Jerry, Steven Universe, Finn and Jake, and Harley Quinn.
In addition to this news, the developer has published the above video, which shows two team members going up against a pair of pro players from previous technical tests. Speaking of pros, MultiVersus will be one of the games taking part in this year's EVO fighting game tournament.
It looks like scrappy good fun from what's shown in the video — we're looking forward to taking it for a spin. Will you be signing up for Multiversus' alpha test? Choose your fighter in the comments section below.

This is actually quite fun!!! Really enjoyed the other alphas I was in on, just hoping they make it a BIT less floaty. Other than that, I thought it was a shockingly well made game. And c'mon......they made the Shaggy memes a reality 😂
Signed up, WB can really have such a great roster. Hopefully the business model is more like Brawlhalla.
Maximilian Dood has been saying that more fighting games need to be F2P so it could be an acid test for more upcoming games.
Man, I watched this and I really have no idea how platform fighters work.
The character roster is cool though.
@Voltan Have you never played a Smash Bros or one of it's many knockoffs?
@MFTWrecks I have not. I can tell that these are all pretty similar (like, the way damage works and how you score points seem to be about the same) but being a long time "traditional" fighting game player, it looks very confusing
Can it beat the masterpiece Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl? That's the real question that needs to be asked.
@Voltan It's like a 2d platforming game, but with fighting mechanics. So instead of comboing someone on a level plane, you're doing it over various platforms. It means the games are more focused on movement across the entirety of the stage. Knocking someone off the stage adds an extra layer of depth which causes players to try and combo each other close to the edge.
GOOOOOOSH I HOPE I GET IIIIIINNN!!!
@Abeedo there’s no fighting mechanics in these other than a block button and a punch button .
@nomither6 Sounds like something a n00b would say... I'm not going to say Smash-likes have the same level of depth as the traditional fighter. Especially if they're not the OG. But they definitely have mechanical depth.
@RoomWithaMoose no they don’t
I'll just be waiting for the full game, when it's on sale for $20 New in a few years...
@Abeedo Of course it can, it has the characters SPEAKING!
Nick Brawl without Ren saying 'Yooo, eediot!' is no Ren & Stimpy at all.
Nobody has said it, so I will. The game looks like dog crap.
