Whisper it, but when all’s said and done, we reckon there’s a distinct chance the Nintendo Switch will have outsold even the PS2 – it’s certainly on track to do so. For now, the hybrid hardware’s latest achievement is outselling the PS4 in the United States, as confirmed in the latest NPD report, which is impressive considering it’s only been on the market for five years compared to the Sony console’s nine.
The reality is that the Nintendo Switch is just extraordinarily popular, with juggernaut exclusive games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Its form factor also makes it more viable for repeated purchases; there are likely to be many households with more than one Nintendo Switch in them, while most families will have settled for a single PS4.
Ultimately, this just speaks to the overall vibrancy of the video game industry right now, though. PS4 may have been overtaken by the Nintendo Switch in the USA, but it’s still one of the most successful consoles of all time, and nothing can take that away. In global terms, the Nintendo Switch needs to sell another nine million or so units to overtake the PS4 worldwide, which will likely happen in the next year.
It’s still got just under 50 million to go in order to topple the PS2, though…

Will be some achievement if the Switch eventually outsells the PS2. Have to remember that so many people bought a PS2 as a DVD player — it quickly hit a point where it was much better value than a dedicated DVD device. Arguably the most "mainstream" console of all time.
But like the article says, it's fair to assume that a lot of people own more than one Switch. If Nintendo was to release another model, then it'd go even further — something that it's done to boost sales since the days of the Game Boy. Still, a sale's a sale, innit.
That’s a phenomenal amount of sales. I’m one of those who hasn’t got a switch yet. I keep thinking to get it-but I can wait until the switch 2 comes out. Congrats to Nintendo!
Crazy figures. I’m not even that into my Switch, fell off pretty hard with Nintendo’s first party output this gen. The concept is fantastic though, it’s hard to deny.
I think the only thing stopping it is if themselves. If their next console doesn't come out till 2024-5 it will be close especially if they have a new model or two. Switch LITE OLED or SWITCH OLED XL
If Super Nintendo Switch (for want of a better name) comes in 2023 it won't make it. Don't do it Ninty! Gimme a shiny new box not a reskinned old one, pretty please with sugar on top.
I don’t see the switch passing the PS2 unless the switch is successor is treated the same way as the GameBoy Colour and counted together with the original switch.
Amazing what actual good exclusives can do. Don't own a switch (not my thing), but games is the most important thing. So much that everything else about the switch is inferior, but games do the talking.
Will it beat PS2? It might, but at least it's ending in second place.
I own a switch but tbh I've been less than impressed with the console and games as a whole. Call me a fanboy, but the Vita was so ahead of its time. It's a shame it never worked out.
I don't see it reaching PS2 but reaching PS4 is very impressive no doubt. I wish I liked my Switch more than I do but I can't deny I do love me some Fire Emblem Three Houses. Honestly that game alone has kept me from selling the thing but there's just so much stuff in that game!
I really do need to start playing my Switch again. I have so many good games to play, but I haven’t touched it in a while, with the exception of playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online every now and then.
PS2 will take some beating but if it manages it then fair play. Especially after the disaster if the Wii U
I'm lucky enough to own a Switch, PS5 and a Series X
Gamers have never had it so good
It's a juggernaut with families. Nearly all my friends with kids have one. Only one has another console. In my daughters class, about half the kids have a switch in their house. The family friendly component of Nintendos brand is often overlooked.
@R1spam
It's also the best console to play with your friends IN FRONT OF YOU.
Something that was lost last gen with xbox and ps.
I Have over 103 Games for my Nintendo Switch OLED!! I Never had this many Games for any other Console/Handheld, and I've been Gaming since 4 Years Old (I'm Now 34)! If any Console Deserves to be the Best Selling Console of All Time, it Should Be The Nintendo Switch. Sorry ps4 fans, but Nintendo Switch is Much Better!
@Cyrus29 You seriously need to Buy a Nintendo Switch! Don't miss out on Gaming History! They're so Much Incredible Exclusives for Nintendo Switch with many more coming this Year! I can't believe why anyone wouldn't want one??!
Excellent news, considering how we keep hearing about the demise of home consoles.
I'll buy Nintendo every time as my secondary console because I know there's always going to be a Mario Kart and a Zelda.
The Switch has some great exclusives like Xenoblade, SMT V, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, Kirby, The Forgotten Land and Triangle Strategy but I'm not into it nearly as much as previous Nintendo consoles. Still good to see Nintendo doing well after the Wii U which was a disaster, just hope they don't screw up the Switch successor like they did when going from Wii to Wii U.
@NintendoEternity hey buddy. I was originally looking at getting the oled version. But as I don’t have that sudden urge to get one at the moment, that why I’m ok with just waiting till a eventual switch 2 releases. But a switch purchase is def on the cards. I was also slow onto Xbox-1st console was a one s. I’ve not been a fan of new Xbox games, but loving the backwards comparability of older games(love the og gears games) and I’ve always thought about getting a switch. I got a few buddies who constantly tell me to get one. You know, I may leave it till the summer-if nothing new gets announced then-I’ll more or less get the oled one.
I feel most parents should give their kids a Switch. Great stuff.
I've got both a Switch and a Vita and I love both. Gotta say, though, that the Switch is mostly for my daughter and I've been having more fun with my Vita. Never expected to be into handhelds and now I can say that I'll also get a Steam Deck when it becomes readily available.
I've been playing games and owning systems since the Atari 2600 and the Switch is easily my least favorite system. It's just so bland and boring and the exclusives seem like stripped down and lazy versions of games Nintendo did better 20 years ago. I honestly can't understand the love for the system, but to each their own.
I have 2 Switches (Lite and Oled) and must say I'm bewitched by that thing. That feeling... holding... in my own hand... Diablo 2,3, Xcom 2, Witcher 3 or simple Duke Nukem 3D... that feeling is like living your gamers dream. I got Switch and PS5 almost at same time and must say, my playtime NS vs PS5 is 10 to 1.
I've been gaming since the 80s and I can honestly say that I've had more fun with my Switch than any other console. So many amazing games covering a huge range of genres. Well done Nintendo.
I have to have an Xbox and PlayStation as well though. There are franchises on those platforms that I couldn't do without.
@Cyrus29 I feel the same but they keep saying it’s only half way through the lifecycle. Probably what they mean is it’ll be supported regardless if a Switch 2 gets released
@RevGaming "Amazing what actual good exclusives can do. Don't own a switch (not my thing), but games is the most important thing"
Not... exactly. Wiiu failed despite having many great exclusives that are now thriving on the switch.
It's my favorite console of all time at this point, with some of the best exclusive games I've ever played, stronger third-party support than any device they've released since the SNES, and an innovative form factor that draws on their unique selling points as a company.
It definitely has the possibility to become the best-selling console ever, depending on how long Nintendo is willing to support it. If Nintendo holds on for a few more years before releasing new hardware, and especially if they release the late-gen hardware refresh people have been insisting was coming since 2018, then there's a very strong possibility it'll lap the PS2. After all, we are talking about a device that, in its sixth year, is still projected to sell more than PS4 did at its peak.
It's true the PS2 doubling as a cheap DVD player helped make it ubiquitous, but it's also true that the market has grown since then, and that the Switch has quickly become a one-per-person console, and that many people are even buying multiple consoles.
On the other hand, Nintendo focuses more on profit than market domination, so they won't flood the market late-gen to boost their numbers. They also tend not to support their consoles as long as Sony does, although, with Switch still selling this well and a chip shortage still ravaging the market, they might opt to stay the course longer than they usually would.
So many people thought it would fail, or that it was a stupid idea for a console, and yet it has enjoyed levels of success most of us thought would be impossible. What a comeback story!
That's one hell of an achievement! Congratulations to Nintendo, the Switch has been a runaway success. And it's a great little console to boot.
To think it launched in 2017 so it's outsold the PS4 in almost half the time.
Imagine if it reaches 160million, it will become the best selling games console of all time beating even the mighty PS2.
Since Nintendo recently stated the Switch is about half way through its lifecycle it is possible.
Can it dethrone the PS2 where nothing has even come close?
Removed - flaming/arguing
Wouldn't want one even if offered for free.
This a PS site or a Nintendo one?!
🤔
@NintendoEternity lost, mate?
😉
None of their games appeal to me, but then again I'm not a kid!
@Col_McCafferty You may not be a kid, but you might have some growing up to do, mate.
I wish I enjoyed my Switch as much as I see other people enjoy theirs, but I really only cared for Breath of the Wild and a bit of Smash Ultimate. I will say that BoTW alone was worth getting a Switch, and I also had that game Wii U. What a masterclass in open world design.
@Constable_What Come on, the vast majority of people that bought this thing did it for the kids games. That's a fact.
How many bought one just to play the likes of Astral Chain and Three Emblems or Houses or whatever it's called? 3? 5?
😄
This IS a PS site though, people don't have to love Nintendo on here you know.
🙄
@Col_McCafferty There are some amazing games on the Switch. You have to be a kid to enjoy them.
Here in my country I don't even know one person with a Switch. Things are really different depending on where you live.
I don't like Mario, Zelda, Metroid or Pokémon, so... Yeah, not the console for me, as is always the case with Nintendo. There are two or three games that catch my atention but I'm not gonna buy a Switch just for that.
Still, a very big accomplishment.
@Col_McCafferty Yeah that fact seems like you just made it up, but you're right, you don't need to love Nintendo on this site.
Considering a lot of people probably bought the Switch for Zelda, Smash, and Fire Emblem it is a bit flippant to people that love those games.
Those games are miles better than say, Horizon Creed West or whatever it's called.
It's an achievement in the industry that yhe Switch is selling well. It's good for everyone.
Looking forward to seeing whether the PS5 can continue the record breaking streak like it was doing in its 1st year or will the massive shortage hurt its potential like it's been doing since it launched
3DS remains my favorite console of all time. It just had a magic that drew me away from PS4 at the time. Vita could, and should have topped it, but we all know how that turned out, so Vita got neglected far too much. And so did PS4. I thought Switch would easily replace it as my favorite, but somehow the momentum dropped out. I still love the form factor, and plenty of games on it, but it hasn't quite edged out 3DS's status for me. I thought Series X might, but that (for now) has not quite hit that mark either, so 3DS is safe for now. Switch is great, but it's definitely lost some charm vs it's predecessor to me. The new Kirby is pulling me back though. It's a course correction after some questionably bland by-the-numbers first party games and reminds me of the pure "fun" their games used to bring. Hopefully that bodes well for XC3 and future titles if the platform is really only halfway through its life.
Also, are we really still doing "Nintendo is for kids?" I'd like to remind everyone that while murder, blood, and torture are common fare on PlayStation, all the skin has been exiled to Nintendo, while Uncle Jim protects the delicate eyes of PlayStation "adults" not yet ready to see some things.
@Col_McCafferty
In what world is Shin Megami Tensei V for kids?
I don't want anything to beat the PS2 Well maybe the PS5 Sounds impressive sales tho. Well done Nintendo 👏
Ok, you get credit for that CvS2 reference. 😁
@Col_McCafferty
"None of their games appeal to me, but then again I'm not a kid!"
You certainly sound like one with such a stupid attitude.
Switch is the best console for kids, hands down.
Both my children have a Switch. We also have Xboxes and PlayStations, but if I was to choose the best one for them, it would easily be the Switch.
They can play it anywhere without taking up a TV. It is especially useful on long journeys and going on vacation. If they get stuck on a game they can bring it to me to help them rather than me having to go to them. Games are cheaper and hold their value (great for trading) and Nintendo Online having a family plan is great. It’s simple things that really make it more versatile for families.
It isn’t the best if you want all the AAA titles or the latest Call of Duty or the best graphics. But it has a wealth of titles to suit all gaming styles and having a handheld console will compliment any gamer’s collection, and that’s why it’s selling so well.
It’s great for kids and parents buy it. Yeh lots of adults play too but the reason they’re on top is cos of the parents buying for kids and the kids not being able to buy on their own. It’s a completely different type of machine and bears no relevance in PlayStation or Xbox circles
It's a much better console you'll never beat Nintendo games
Love my Switch, its a great console to just lay in bed and unwind with before sleep.
@Col_McCafferty Just because a game is made for all ages doesn't mean its a kids game, come on Lego games are proof of that considering adult gamers love them. Also if you think Fire Emblem is a kids game then you clearly never played them. Fun fact one of the biggest Switch games coming this year is Bayo 3 a game strictly for adults.
Anyway you're the resident PS fanboy so you're opinion will always favour PS.
@Col_McCafferty just because games are suitable for kids doesn’t mean they are “kids games”.
I would class Breath of the Wild as a mature game that children can play. My kids both love it as do I.
However, the same vibes I get from Breath of the Wild I also get from Horizon Zero Dawn. Clearly not a kids game, but not much different in terms of maturity and feel (imho).
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is also a very kid friendly game. But try and get three stars on tournaments in the 200cc mode and you’ll be dreaming of playing something easier. It takes skill and dedication far beyond that of a child.
The Switch excels in family friendly content, yes, but it also has a wealth of games that cater to older and more hardcore players. Not to mention the fact there are hundreds of 18+ rated games on it.
it outsold a discontinued last gen console after 5 years , congratulations.
@Kienda “ cater to older and more hardcore players. Not to mention the fact there are hundreds of 18+ rated games on it.”
if you don’t mind , could you please list a few ?
Grats to the Switch on it selling well! I recently set mine up again and beat the main story of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, had a fun time!
@naruball
Wii u was just bad marketing. I still don't know what it is to this day. I still think it's a tablet for the wii. You can't stray away too much from traditional console gaming. Switch is just a gamecube and a ds blend together. It's familiar, yet new.
Still, everything except for the games are inferior to the switch, so switch would be dead if their exclusives were as good as xbox one's exclusives. Nintendo would've left the gaming industry with two missteps. Same for Sony is ps4 was another ps3.
Xbox... well lets see how it goes. They're doing fine but I mostly believe it's due to stock (not gamepass like most believe).
@nomither6 Its also outsold both the current gen PS5 and Xbox X/S put together last year if thats more impressive.
@HeeHo It's not because of stock.
If Nintendo somehow keep this thing going for another couple years I think we'll finally see the PS2 toppled and in half the time, kinda insane.
@RevGaming Switch also had stock issues last year.
@Col_McCafferty Oh wow aren't you cool.
@HeeHo
You just said they sold more than both combined...
so they didn't have stock issues. Not even close to what those two had.
Now the question is can it reach PS2 and DS levels.
With no sign of slowing and a pretty good list of exclusives over the next 12 months its possible it will come close
@Col_McCafferty C'mon dude no need to call Nintendo fans kids, people like different stuff thats all.
The whole "Nintendo for kids" thing was a Sega marketing strategy in the 90s. Sony amplified it in their own 90s marketing. It's surreal we're still living with a perception created by a 90s marketing campaign of a company that failed with it, about a platform that has uncensored versions of games censored on PS 🤣
Switch has it's faults namely in the dated hardware capabilities holding back even first party efforts visibly at times, and drift, but the for kids thing is just funny.
@BReal IDK about the total market, but keep in mind that in our little corner of enthusiast gaming, a pretty good chunk of us Push and PXB posters own Switches... So even if it's not relevant to Jim's overall market (which is mostly not us folks on Push), it's pretty relevant in our enthusiast world of PS and XB fans.
@LightningLeader Welcome to the family! I hope you enjoy your Switch OLED! I love mine, and my other Switch/Lite systems as well. Great profile pic by the way! I recently started playing Final Fantasy 13 on my Series X and I'm loving it so far! Im a big fan of Lightning 😁
@Col_McCafferty Nintendo is for Everyone. So what's your definition of "adult video games"? Call of duty? Madden? Uncharted? 😆 🤣
Grow up!
@nomither6 ps4 is not discontinued. Sony is still trying to sell them since they can't even put ps5 consoles out in stores. And the way this is going ps5 nor the Xbox Series X will pass ps4 either.
@Carl-G sorry carl-G, but if anything beats the DVD player ps2, I want it to be the On the Go Nintendo Switch!
@Cyrus29 I have the Nintendo Switch OLED and it's incredible! I highly recommend it!
@LightningLeader Switch has so many amazing games! It's my favorite console of all time! I have over 240 physical Switch games, so if you need any suggestions, let me know. I have the other FF 13 games downloaded already. I'll definitely have to pick up physical copies of those games soon!
@nomither6 Sure.
Switch games that are 18+: Doom Eternal, The Witcher 3, Mortal Kombat 11, Grand Theft Auto games, Skyrim, Dying Light, Dark Souls, Dead by Daylight, World War Z, Diablo 3 etc.
Switch games with challenge: Dark Souls, Cuphead, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Ikaruga etc.
Online multiplayer games also offer challenge such as Rocket League, Fortnite, etc, but these also including fighting games like Dragon Ball FighterZ, MK11 etc which was in the tournament scene.
Nintendo’s first party games also offer some great online multiplayer with high skill ceilings such as Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2 and of course Super Smash Bros Ultimate which also has pro tournaments.
I’m not claiming it’s the best console for all things hardcore, but it has a massive selection of games for all types of gamers and to claim there are no games for adults or a more hardcore audience is naive.
@RevGaming yes, in other words, good/great games alone do not guarantee that a console will be successful. There are so many other factors that are constantly neglected, marketing being one of them.
But quality =/= sales or success
@Dryster "you’re nothing but a bullshitter. Fed up with all your *****.don’t have a ***** clue about video games. Prick. Good night"
Pretty sure you got pushsquare with youtube confused. This is a place for civilized conversation. If you disagree with something I said, you can always state so. Personal attacks simply reflect badly on you.
@naruball
but what else does switch has other than games? Portability?
everything else is worse. I think it's only the games carrying it.
@RevGaming portability is one of the big ones.
If you think about it, all Ninty handhelds have done exceptionally well. So, the successor of 3ds was bound to sell well, because handheld gamers wanted to play the latest Pokemon, Mario, etc. After the switch's initial success thanks to its portability, it became a cool item to have. Consumers buy what their friends or everyone else is buying. It's the snowball effect. Ninty managed to nail the first year and get good press. The rest came easily.
it's not just my theory or anything. An MS executive also stressed the importance of the race to 10m. Xbone, Wiiu and psvita did so badly not because they didn't have good games, but because of the bad press surrounding them.
I mean, Wiiu had Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Smash! All huge games that got great reviews, but it still failed. Psv launched with an Uncharted game, then Killzone, Little Big Planet, Gravity Rush, Tearaway and many others. But it was too late. Before it even launched it was perceived as doomed, so "no one" wanted it. Not sure about xb1, since I don't follow xb news, but I'm sure Forza was great, it must also have had Halo, etc. Bad PR can make or break a console.
Ps5 currently has the best reputation anyone could ask for. It's sold out everywhere and it's the most desired product that even mainstream shows/news programs constantly bring up. With extra stock it'd be breaking records left and right. Not because of its super amazing games (those are hardly ever the reason a console becomes successful), but because it's perceived as a hot item.
Edit: better or worse doesn't matter much. Psv is 10x better than psp. Better screen, better controls, two thumb sticks that everyone wanted, etc. But it didn't matter. Psp was cool, whereas psv became the butt of the joke. You don't need quality to sell well. Look at the Kardashians
I love the Oled but play my PS5 more.
My wife enjoys playing Animal Crossing and MK8 on it and even bought one for our niece. It's a nice little machine. Maybe once I get through my insane backlog on PS5 I'll have to finally get stuck into BotW until then though it's great for keeping fit with ring fit adventure!
People missed the point. Some of geeks might be interested in buying Three Emblems or Astral Chain etc BUT the vast majority of people that bought a Switch did it for kids or kids friendly games like Mario or glorified mobile games like Animal Crossing. Look at the sales of those games compared to the more 'mature' ones.
Just seems strange to me how many Nintendo fanboys there are on a PS site. Seems you can criticise PS on here but not Nintendo. The only game the latter have that I'd play if released on PS is BotW,, that's it.
Mario Kart? Pah. Unlike a certain other poster, I prefer racing games that are more realistic not the other way round. 😉
What else they got? Nothing for me as I can't stand Pokémon, probably the worst franchise in history. Arms?! Hahaha.
Anyway, enjoy it I guess but this IS a PS site so it's pretty likely you're going to come across some gamers that prefer their consoles over the Switch. Try not to be too offended.
😄
@HeeHo it’s not like there’s a shortage or anything
It’s a cracking machine. I love the vita and the switch really shows what Sony could have had if they hadn’t given up. The switch is a monster and has such a solid varied games line up. The 3rd party support is growing and it should have been stronger from the start. Lots of companies don’t like money. With this user base companies should be begging to put their games out and it’s a complete myth most switch users are kids - I’d wager most are older gamers with plenty of cash to splash on games. Retro gamers.
“There are no games on Nintendo for me”
With a crash bandicoot avatar. Lol.
“I would have one for free as they are for kids”
Lol.
Never change never change.
@NintendoEternity it took over five years let’s see how the ps5 and series do five years later , excluding the shortage time .
nintendos overrated , but they’re not bad , but it’s hard to resist refuting the overbearing fanboys , y’all are irresistible
@Col_McCafferty we aren’t Nintendo fanboys we are gamers. We don’t “support” one brand like a sports team. We are educated, intelligent gamers that appreciate varied experiences and don’t say things like “glorified mobile game”
I couldn’t care less you don’t like Nintendo but you do half talk some rubbish.
Switch & PS4 two awesome consoles indeed and both worthy of their successes. Nice.
I've only ever owned a Nintendo Wii before, which I bought 1 Christmas for my daughter. But strangely now I'm thinking of getting a switch as I'm in hotels a couple of nights a week with work and it might be a good distraction from being in bars and pubs. Funny to think gaming might improve my health.
I’m also not a fan of my Switch (has a lot of badly optimised multiplatform games, running at 20 fps and/or with muddy textures, pop ins, etc.) and use it mostly for some of Nintendo's exclusives. But duuude: Saying, that the console is still a Kids’ gaming machine is sooo old fashioned. Starting from 2018 Sony has become extremely censorship happy, so that the Switch is looking very mature in comparison to the PS4 and 5. ^^
@Lando_ his point about games like Animal Crossing still stands. Compared to games like The Last of Us that deal with very mature themes, first party ninty games can be enjoyed by the entire family.
@naruball
I just think it's about the games, portability coming in second (I wouldn't use it) and that's basically it.
UI, Online, Hardware (the power and the design), Controllers, No achievments, no voice chat, horrible friend system, no sales for their games, lack of features and pretty much everything else is worse.
That's just my opinion. I would only get it to play the games. Another thing that bothers me is that it's better to play offline multiplayer with friends rather than the bad online. I don't have time to go to every friend's house.
@Kienda
You just named third party games that are more popular on other platforms.
When it comes to first party, Nintendo's games are easy, accessible because millions of kids will play it. Half of Pokemon demographic are less than 18 (from black and white days). There's nothing hardcore about them. Pokemon has luck based moves so kids can get lucky and beat the game. Smash is way more simple than a traditional 2d side scroller fighting game. Kirby, Yoshi, 2d Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing are simple and accessible games for kids to enjoy. This is why Nintendo isn't for me. Too "brain dead" and the games that are for me like platinum games, Metroid games and monster hunter... well there are better options for those type of games on PS and Xbox or they just don't sell as well. Amazing games, but they're mostly for the casuals. I had to download pokémon fan games because I wanted an actual challenge.
@Col_McCafferty
I don't get why people get triggered when people call nintendo games for kids when they're mostly for kids lmao. Their commercials and how they talk during nintendo directs even says it.
Most of Nintendo's games design, gameplay, art, stories are made in a way that's it's simple for kids to understand.
All you had to do in Kirby games is suck the powers of enemies and press B to beat the game. Some of the comments saying you have to do this, this exact way to make it a challenge... then it's not a challenge then lol.
Nintendo most POPULAR franchises are for kids (with the exception of 3d mario and 3d zelda imo and those even have artstyle aimed for kids). It's just something that Adults can enjoy too and there's nothing wrong with that. Women watch Disney Movies too.
Even if Gamepass was cheaper, I would buy my kid a Switch because of the games. Our parents bought us nintendo for the same reason. Like common. Who are we fooling? Yeah, there are kids playing cod, but those are popular games. I don't see kids playing god of war, skyrim or dark souls. Nintendo games are awesome and for everyone, but lets not kid ourselves.
@Cyrus29 and here I thought I was the only one. Already played BOTW on the Wii U so I'm not in a rush either.
@RevGaming I think you are missing the point a bit.
The claim I’m refuting is that Switch has “nothing but kids games” which is wrong.
All the big three consoles are amazing and have something for everyone. However, PlayStation and Xbox offer way less family friendly games than the Switch. Does that mean they’re rubbish for kids? Nope.
So why do people make out the Switch has nothing but kids games when there are clearly a lot of games for all gaming types?
It obviously isn’t the best choice if you only want first person shooters or something. But it doesn’t make it a bad console or that it has nothing to offer when clearly it does.
Also, your Pokémon point makes no sense. Pokémon is a kids game. That’s not a debate. But Nintendo does produce quality games with challenge. You cannot say “Smash is easy” unless you can go to a pro tournament and win it.
There are many examples of easy to play games with high skill caps.
Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2 and Smash Bros are all easy for kids to play. But play pros at those games and they will wipe the floor with any child.
The same goes for popular competitive games on all consoles, Rocket League, Fortnite, Apex Legends, FIFA, Call of Duty etc. they are all easy to play for kids. But the skill ceiling is very high.
There is a reason there is a competitive scene for these games where gamers are paid to play. Because they earn it with their talent. And multiple Nintendo games suit that category.
It’s not hard to understand.
@Col_McCafferty You will find most of us own at least a PS console and the Switch. I myself own a PS5, Switch and Series S because i want access to all the games.
The fact you fall on games like Mario, Zelda and Fire Emblem suggests you don't know much about what the Switch actually has. Yeah sure its popular among kids but you will find its popular among adults as well especially adults with young kids who don't get the chance to play on the TV that often, for instance a friend of mine 2 years back had a newborn so the Switch was his console of choice because it was easier to fit in when looking after a baby.
@Kienda
You know what he meant when he said nothing but. He didn't say 100%. Take those comments with a grain of salt.
Most of the exclusives sony and xbox makes are for adults, and nintendo is the same but for kids. It is what it is.
I never said it has nothing to offer, it just offers something different.
Pokemon is for kids. Idk what I said about Pokemon that didn't make sense. Specify.
Of course it's going to be hard to win vs anybody that plays a specific game all day. That doesn't mean it's a hard game. I've played smash throughout the years and it's easy to play vs something like MK11 or SF5.
I don't think you get the point. Bubble blowing can be competitive, but it's something simple to do.
Fortnite is more complex than any Nintendo game. Miles more. I completely disagree. Those games you mention are more complex.
Let me give you another example. Eating 20 hot dogs can be hard to master. So can detecting a parasite under a microscope. Both have competitions you can be both good at, but one is way more complex than the other one.
It's not hard to understand. Sorry had to lol.
@Col_McCafferty Its almost like Nintendo fans can also like Playstation, crazy I know.
And Pokemon is literally the best selling franchise in history XD
@Col_McCafferty Because they're not fanboys they're gamers.
You're acting all elitest because your special black box is less special all of a sudden, its kinda pathetic.
@The__Goomba He couldn't have picked a worse frachise to call out lol.
The best console ever proof graphics aren't the reason why people buy games. You cannot & will not ever beat Nintendo exclusives. Elden ring? Brilliant one of my favourite games of all time already but is it better than BOTW? It's not even on the same league.
@NintendoEternity 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it really ain’t but whatever
@The__Goomba isn’t Pokémon for kids and adult children though?
@RevGaming Haha, touché on the last comment.
Well, we are saying the same thing. The difference is, you see those third party games as part of what makes PlayStation and Xbox suitable for adults but not Switch when they are third party games on all of them.
Mortal Kombat 11 is on Switch, Xbox and PS4 for example. And that is one of the games we have both mentioned.
All Nintendo games are kid friendly. That’s part of their philosophy and I’ve not disputed that. The Switch is the best family console. However, I still stand that the Switch still has adult appeal.
Let’s bear in mind that the average age for gamers is in their mid-30s.
Nintendo shared Switch demographics so we can see for ourselves.
The vast majority of Switch owners (75%) are adults aged 20-45.
The largest demographic of Switch owners are aged 20-25 years old.
There is not a single group of kids that beats any adult group until you reach the over 40s.
So, yeah. Nintendo makes kid friendly games, but they aren’t all for kids.
Thought I’d add in @Col_McCafferty and @nomither6 to help show the stats above.
No one is arguing that Nintendo doesn’t make kid friendly games. That is their appeal. But they have a lot to offer and to dismiss Switch entirely is closed minded.
Personally, I play PS4/5 and PC games for 95% of my time. But I have still enjoyed the Switch and you cannot go wrong with any console as long as you have an open mind. But if you want more mature games then of course, Switch isn’t the best option, but it’s still an acceptable one, especially for someone on a budget or who needs gaming on the go (busy house with few TVs, lots of travel etc).
@Kienda
I get that some of the third party are on switch, but most people don't play them on switch for obvious reasons we hardcore gamers know.
It has an adult appeal, but not as much as the other platforms. That's all I'm saying. Which you just agreed with me on the last paragraph.
I can agree with what you said for the most part.
Surprised about the 75%, but hey, maybe those 75% like accessible games. I know girls/women love the switch.
@SuperPotato316 Apart from the 1 million PS4 units Sony has just ordered!
I think Sony need to give the base PS4 the price reduction to £200 and sell as many as they can. £260 is just too high for a base console, especially when compared to the Series S and the Switch.
@Kienda the problem with that comment is the switch is stupendously underpowered so getting any game that’s not first party CAN be a waste and pointless , factor in that the servers for MP third party are basically dead compared to other platforms . let’s be for real , practically no one is playing mk11 online on the switch or any other game that’s not nintendo , & why would they beyond portability using a hotspot or wi-fi which without a doubt would be a laggy mess ? & to top it off , it’s not like it’s free which makes it worse . Those percentages i bet are people mostly playing nintendo games or exclusives ; imagine if nintendo’s games were on steam/PC , those “hardcore” gamers you claim would jump ship quick , because hardcore gamers don’t usually like gimmicks and setbacks for the games they play .
& nintendo is definitely kid-oriented and their target demographic are kids , the switch is childish with its presentation , i don’t get why this is still in question in 2022 when this has been a thing since the gamecube or even the 64 . Sony/Xbox/PC all have kid-friendly games , the problem is that nintendo’s makes “kid-oriented” games i.e targeting them so it’s no wonder they have the stigma that they do . but it’s not a stigma to them as a corporation , it’s really only gamers fond of nintendo that seem to have a problem with it being said . ironic .
i’m 24 and own a switch btw , im just giving an honest opinion
@Col_McCafferty Pure ignorance.
Barf.
Major congratulations to Nintendo on this one. Those are some amazing numbers.
Big deal. There's nothing that Nintendo (or Microsoft) has ever made that could hold a candle to Sony's PS4 generation of first-party exclusives.
I didn't realise that the US was the whole world!
The Switch is nowhere near the worldwide sales of the PS4, let alone the ps2.
@Zemo55 it's very close to the ps4, worldwide.
@SuperPotato316 Thank Goodness!
Nintendo Switch has now reached over 110 Million Units sold Worldwide! Only a Matter of time before Nintendo Switch outsells ps4 WORLDWIDE!
@Zemo55 Yes it is, it's very close! Only 7 million more units to outsell the ps4 Worldwide!
Now time will only tell with the ps2.
