Sony will refresh its new PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium tiers on a monthly basis, adding in new PS5, PS4, PS3, PS1, and PSP games regularly. While the usual PS Plus Essential update will still take place at the beginning of each month, the two more expensive tiers will be refreshed in the middle of the month. This way, if you subscribe to either PS Plus Extra or PS Plus Premium, the service is updated for you every two weeks.
Sony clarifies that "the number of games refreshed will vary per month", with some also leaving the service. The rollout begins on 24th May 2022 in select Asian territories, before coming to US shores on 13th June 2022 and then across Europe on 23rd June 2022. I've never had Gamepass or Now so the rotating games system sounds stressful to me, but otherwise, I like that the higher tiers get their own updates.
Maybe this was answered in other articles, but are games claimed in Extra (or Premium, I guess) owned like with PS Plus? Or are they like Now and are just borrowed from Sony?
Are you sure that the games that are being refreshed does apply to PS1 - PS3? Also, can the PS1 and PS2 games be purchased.
Some of the worst lineups I've ever seen. Pathetic actually. Not a single PS1 Classic I've heard nor would I play. Where are the actual classics I grew up with? Dino Crisis, Tomb Raider 1-4, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story? They truly thought launching with that piss poor selection would make me want to upgrade.
@Snake_V5 "An additional monthly refresh will occur in the middle of each month with new games across the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium/Deluxe plans. The number of games refreshed will vary per month."
I wouldn't have written the article if it didn't apply to both tiers lol
Great selection. Personally don’t care much about classic games. Definitely subscribe the premium tier.
@jmac1686 Hopefully there on the list when it gets revealed fully. It doesn't mean they can't ever add those games in the future since it will be refreshed over time.
@LiamCroft I think I need about 3 more articles to finally figure out the order of Essential, Extra and Premium. Part of the problem is Essential really didn't need a new name if it's just PS+ did it? Though some caffeine probably would help, my tea be brewing as I type this.☕
I’m guessing RDR 2 will be one of the first rotated out. Rockstar games never stay long.
@jmac1686 "They truly thought launching with that piss poor selection would make me want to upgrade." yes, they were targeting you specifically out of every PS Plus user on the planet. You might not like it but others do.
At the moment there is nothing there for me to upgrade, hopefully some more exciting titles come down the line but so far it just seems to be the lacklustre selection of PS2 games on the PS4 (minus GTA) and some of the least exciting PS1 games, though Tekken 2 and Syphon Filter are welcome inclusions
I'll stick with Essential until some games that interest me go on the service. With the rumours of Shadow Hearts, that might not be too far away... maybe we'll see a proper PAL release of a certain other RPG trilogy too through this.
@awp69 where does it say RDR2 is on it?
Hopefully more PS1, PSP, PS2 and PS3 games that we all love (and maybe some gems too) will be around the corner. Still surprised how's there's only one psp game. Expected maybe the God of War psp games or spmething.
@shadow2k Maybe they are happy with people buying their games rather than paying next to nothing and complaining about the selection.
@bremkat35 In the list of games on another of today’s articles.
@Apfelschteiner people gotta whinge I guess. XD I'm one of those people who votes on the PS Plus This Month polls and if I don't like the selection, I say so but move on - my opinion isn't the Be All and End All™ and I recognise Sony have to make a buck. Someone likes their Fifa? Go nuts, is just not for me.
@shadow2k yes, because THOSE PS1 games are what PS1 players really remember the system for. Give me a break.
As someone who only cares about the classic games and literally no other feature on any tier, this has so far been quite a hard pill to swallow. Lol
Good. I always look forward to the announcement/leak only to be sorely disappointed, so to have that happen twice as regularly now is brilliant!
@Brydontk Not stressful…they shouldn’t be replaced every month…just added to. You’ll no doubt usually get 6 months to a year before games start getting taken off.
This is what a subscription service needs…new titles per month to ensure you stay subscribing. If those are first party games all the better. I imagine Sonys first party will stay on indefinitely. And this is why they’re no doubt investing more in live service games to ensure subscribers stay subscribing
What’s going to be interesting is to see how the basic psplus offerings end up. Psplus for the most part has been decent in the quality and value of the games offered. Compare that with gold where it’s clear the investment is in gamepass monthly offerings and gold is a clear second thought…I do wonder if we will start to see a similar decline in psplus standard offerings as this gen goes on
@Brydontk well with ps now you can keep the games as long as they're on the service or as long as you subscribe...I assume premium will be there same.... Just like psplus... You don't technically own the games, you can only play then as long as you are a subscriber
If Sony released the entire pre PS4 back catalogue on day one people would be complaining that it had nowhere to go. They've got to drip feed the content over time to keep people subscribed. I think this announcement is strong even though I own most of the games that interest me. Just got to wait and see where they go from here.
@jmac1686 Then vote with your wallet, don't subscribe. Getting mad about it and assuming everyone thinks the same way you do isn't kosher.
I cant lie
I like it
@jmac1686 I'll tell you the same thing I've told someone else...
Maybe wait until the full list is revealed before getting your panties in a twist...
It's pretty crazy how quickly people become outraged on the internet before having ALL of the information.
@Bleachedsmiles But the article says that some games will routinely leave the service. So when I say stressful, I mean that would mean the games I'd have to start prioritizing on my backlog are the ones that are about to leave.
@Brydontk Getting access to games for just a month doesn’t sound right. I think it will be like gamepass where they add games every months and the games that leave each month are ones that have been on their for awhile. Expect a huge backlash if it’s literally taking games off after only a month. I think them staying ‘with some leaving the service’…rather than all that months games leave the service when the month is up, to me reads like it will work like gamepass
What I’d like to know is will the first party PlayStation Studios games stay on the service and never rotate out? I hope that’s the case otherwise I’d be better off buying exclusives like Spider-Man, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn etc as those are big open world games that take a lot of time to complete.
All I'm worried about is once we claim or download a PS1, PS2, or PSP game thru the service, can we still access them after they've been "rotated out"?
I realize with the streaming only PS3 titles, once they're gone that's it.
