One of the perks of PS Plus Premium in countries that offer it is the ability to cloud stream games on PS5, PS4, or even PC. This means that you don’t have to download any software, you can just jump right in – albeit with caveats, like reduced image quality and a heavy dependence on your Internet connection’s quality.
But while you’ll be able to stream PS4, PS3, PSP, PS2, and even PS1 games with PS Plus Premium, there’ll be no support for PS5 games. This means that All PS Plus Games like Returnal, which is exclusive to the PS5, will be available to download only. The same is true for cross-gen releases like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, where you’ll be able to download the PS5 and PS4 versions, but only stream the PS4 version.
The reason for this is presumably because Sony’s cloud streaming infrastructure is built on PS4 and PS3 hardware, so presumably it will need be upgraded to support PS5 hardware at some point down the line. To be honest, we’re not sure how big the audience is for game streaming anyway, but this is yet another caveat for PS Plus Premium that does give the whole offering a somewhat messy vibe. It’s worth remembering that while PS5 games can only be downloaded, PS3 games can only be streamed.
Sony adds that “streaming access for some titles, including classic games, will occur after launch of the PS Plus Premium plan” and that “availability may also vary by title”.

I didn’t really think there’d be an issue streaming these. I mean, it’d be streaming at 1080p in all likelihood anyway.
Yet another thing Gamepass has over this.
@WallyWest Does it? I haven't been following. I knew they were upgrading the servers to support the Series X, but I didn't know whether they'd completed that work yet.
Either way, I think you've got to give them a bit of time to upgrade the blades. The chip shortages won't be helping here.
Damn. I really hope that the PC version of this service is cheaper than the console version.
@WallyWest seeing as the resolution is capped on the streaming options, you sure you’re not playing the xbox one/one X versions of games? If so how? There are no series X exclusives…
It'll probably come at a later date, how many people even stream games? If you have a good enough connection to stream a Ps5 game then it's fast enough for downloading which is what most people want.
@get2sammyb They already finished the upgrade to Series X blades.
@MarcG420 Flight Simulator is exclusive to the Series consoles and is playable through xCloud. Also games like FH5 allows you to switch between graphics options which where only available on Series consoles.
@Floki fair enough, for one or two games. Still likely only series S versions as like I said the resolution is capped.
Edit: in fact i seem to remember that when they were upgrading to series x blades it could have 4 instances each blade as it was running series s games. Could be remembering wrong though.
@get2sammyb think they claimed it’s all running on Series X racks now.
As for Sony I’m sure the reason they are not offering this yet is because they simply can’t populate the data centers with PS5 hardware.
Makes you think, though… Xbox managed to build all the xbox they sold AND the ones in their data centers.

@Floki Fair enough. I mean I'm sure Sony will upgrade this eventually, but as I said before, chip shortages won't be helping.
Of course it doesn't because then you wouldn't have to buy a ps5 to play the ps5 games if you have a good enough internet connection
@MarcG420 Whether or not the games are running the Series S version of games vs X is questionable. But generally the X version of games arent massive night and difference of the S versions.
The thing is that Gamepass/xCloud is allowing you to play a next gen version of the game while Sony isn't.
I couldn't imagine a worser game to play streaming then Returnal.
@Floki calling the series s version a next gen version is a HUGE stretch though, isn’t it…
@Floki yes, that’s a selling point of GamePass Streaming on Xbox One, allowing anyone to play next gen exclusives like Flight Simulator on last gen consoles if you can’t find yourself a Series X.
@MarcG420 No. The Series S still offer a next gen feature set. It may be lower resolution than a Series X, but it not a complete slouch, and still a significant step up from PS4 and Xbox One.
My kid played Elden Ring for about 100 hours on his PC streaming from our PS5 (b/c my wife and I take over the tv at night, yes we're big meanines). I know that isn't exactly the same as "cloud streaming" but there is some kind of streaming going on there with a PS5 game if it is playing over the various wires in our house. PS5 is wired to our router, router is wired to our old cable modem which I repurposed as an access point, which is then wired to the PC.
I have no idea what resolution it is, PC monitor is 1080p, kid is playing w/ headphones b/c monitor speakers are well monitor speakers.
Personally I'd always rather download a game than cloud stream it anyway but I'll assume at some point PS5 games will be bale to be streamed, if only in stereo at 1080p.
@get2sammyb Yep its how i've been playing Flight Sim, it takes a resolution hit but its very much playable.
@Floki Is it really a next gen version of a game when Xbox Cloud Streaming is limited to 1080p 60fps?
@mucc Un... Yes. It no different than you plugging your PS5 into a 1080P/60FPS tv. Your PS5 isn't suddenly gonna start playing the last gen version of a game just cause it plugged into a 1080P TV.
Hell, people have their PS5 hooked up to CRTs.
personally ive never had a problem with ps3 streaming looks and played great no disconnects.
@AdamNovice
Totally agree with this.
It would be infuriating.
Streaming is terrible, and likely will be for the rest of my life. As such I’m not bothered about this. As long as I can download I’m good. It does mean that I hope the classic games are very cheap though as I’m very unlikely to get premium tier for this reason.
I don't care for game streaming, so not an issue for me.
Streaming takes the gameplay experience down a couple of notches.
Downloading over streaming any day of the week, not practical with 3 people in the house gaming and trying to watch Netflix 😬 May be years if ever before we get Fibre to home. Just can't take the resolution hit when I know it can look so much better 😎
returnal you know save state has been a thing over 20 years dont fix it if it aint broke , if this graces pc il get a save state mod.
@WallyWest but where are the actual good games?
Game Streaming makes me feel sick! I tried PS Now playing Daytona USA and it was soo blurry and laggy I asked for a refund! I’m on a 100Mb connection and if this is the future I’m not sold. Direct play for me
I've been subbed to NOW for years, but I have never had any interest in streaming - though it seems OK when I've tested it.
This service is about downloading games and playing them like you own them. Its what I've always done with it, and all I want. I'd be happy if they forgo the streaming full stop - I'm sure thats not a big selling point here.
Makes complete sense. They're already supply constrained, imagine them giving up some of those consoles to be used in a streaming centre that a minority of people would even use.
Was very sceptical about game streaming as everything I've tried before was unplayable
But signed up for a month of the 3080 tier of GeForce Now.... and wow. It's in 4k, picture quality is superb, no significant lag, can whack up the graphics options to max. The result is comparable to playing on my PS5.
It's super expensive, so not worth it long term, and the games you can play are limited. I am also lucky to have very fast internet.
But if Microsoft and Sony can match it one day, then I think streaming might actually be viable (for some people at least).
I would greatly appreciate if you would be able to stream ps5 games
Woooow. So not only are they jacking up the cost of streaming vs what it's been for Now for the past 8 years by moving it to Premium.....but it still won't actually include the new games for streaming?!
And people are getting upset with Game Pass' value?
When my Series X died while playing FH5 launch week I just moved to streaming while it was out for repair and while the temporal blurring wasn't as great as having my real local X, and audio wasn't as spectacular, it was pretty much just continuing to game on using my old X1. I played all of Psychonauts 2 streamed to my laptop. I considered eventually adding Premium just to have that streaming for PS games too....and, apparently, that's a no....
This service really seems less competitive by the day. Every new piece of information makes it sound more and more "Nintendo-like".....
@get2sammyb Yes, MS upgraded the racks to all Series X in August or September I believe. Everything runs the X version where available. It has some obvious temporal blur effect in spots from compression but it works extremely well, and I could see a lot of people happy playing only the streaming. I assumed a big reason for Sony jumping on Premium was to get in on that market, but, apparently not. IDK if this comes down to them not planning an infrastructure upgrade and investing into this (poor planning), or if it's a "business" decision to force people to buy PS5s to play their new games rather than just buy Sony's streaming service for their TV/PC. I'm guessing the latter which, considering the industry's trajectory is.....questionable.
‘Luckily’ they’ll only be a handful of ps5 exclusive games on the service for the foreseeable future…I imagine you can still stream ps4 versions of god of war etc?
Streaming is a great addition though. And the sooner Sony have it figured out the better. It’s made games so much more accessible on gamepass…trying them before downloading them. There’s just no downside to having that option…especially when games are getting bigger, requiring longer downloads and you’re playing with around 667gbs on a ps5!
We use streaming a lot more than I ever thought we would. Mostly, if we see a game we might fancy on GP we start it up on cloud so we can try it instantly. If we like it, we set it to download while we keep on playing. Next time we want to boot up the game a local copy is ready to start where we left off. It's a great instant try before you download feature.
It's a shame the same will not be possible for PS5 games, but it's not universal on GP either. Some games just don't support cloud play, and I can imagine over time PS will add PS5s to the the cloud offering, Once it can meet retail demand. Sending XSX to the data center is stated as a reason so many more XSS are available at retail. I don't know to what extent this is true but it has had to have had some effect..
