Paramount Pictures and SEGA have today announced updated box office figures for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and the blue blur's sophomore movie has now comfortably outpaced the original. The sequel now sits at $331.64 million at the global box office, spin-dashing past the first film's $319.71 million.
Despite a mixed reaction from critics (we enjoyed it, for what it's worth), the sequel has been a huge success, with a record-breaking opening weekend seeing it take $72.1 million in the first three days of its US premiere. The total gross in the US box office sits at $162.74 million, surpassing the previous film's $148.97 million. SEGA also points out that the follow-up also debuted at number one in dozens of countries, and has yet to launch in Japan, so it's not finished quite yet.
Of course, it should be noted that the original movie's stint in theatres was cut short; cinemas were forced to close their doors as the COVID-19 pandemic came to the forefront. Despite these circumstances, it's clear that both films have been a big success. It's no wonder a third movie, as well as a Knuckles-centric TV series, received the green light.

Glad to see it doing well. Will be interesting to see where this sits when finished currently I believe the highest grossing VG movies at the global box office are
And then Sonic 2 currently at $331with a lot of legs to go.
Loved the first one. I have the 2nd to watch this weekend
I enjoyed all the parts with Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnic for the most part but despised almost everything else, especially the wedding part. Bleh.
I enjoy it though, but the first one was better.
My friend and I plan on seeing it in the near future. Haven't been to a theater in years.
I'm waiting to watch it at home just because it's only available fully dubbed in cinemas over here and I want Idris Elba as Knuckles.
@themightyant Hate to sound like a broken record, but those numbers are very misleading. Success is based on gross and costs (production + advertisement).
Most importantly, Warcraft was seen as a failure, because in the US, where distributors take a significantly bigger cut from ticket sales, Warcraft bombed. It performed well internationally, but they get much smaller cut from international ticket sales.
There is a reason there wasn't a Warcraft 2, but there was already Sonic 2.
Man, I still need to watch the 1st one. Someday
I would like to see a spin off with the bizarre leaked Sonic from the first film, an abandoned Sonic from another universe, becomes a villain and try to conquer the multiverse.
@naruball No you're 100% right. I have made it clearer I was referencing what the highest grossing films are, which often won't be the most successful.
@themightyant awesome!
Hoping for a crash bandicoot & spyro movie just as good as the sonic ones
@GoodGame Did you end up enjoying Sonic 2?
@Voltan @Deadlyblack You two shouldn't have to wait long for watching it at home, there's only a 45 day theatrical exclusivity window.
@shonenjump86 Highly recommend the films if you're a fan of the video games or the various cartoons/anime.
@Gbarsotini We're more likely to get said plotline in the Netflix exclusive Sonic Prime animated series, releasing sometime in 2022.
@KidBoruto Watching it this evening
