Following in the footsteps of Gotham Knights, developer KT Racing has decided to cancel the PlayStation 4 version of Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown. Also, the racer has been delayed to next year. In a blog post on Steam, it's explained this is being done to make "the most of the technology in the latest consoles" and maximise "the overall quality of the game".
Interestingly, a Nintendo Switch version still appears to be planned. The PS5 will now be the only place to play Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown on Sony machines.
As for the 2023 delay, the reasoning is once again all about improving the open world driving experience. "With so much support from fans of the series, we know many of you will be disappointed, but our goal with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is to make it the most polished gaming experience in the franchise by spending more time on its development," the post says. "We therefore want to thank the fan community for your support and daily involvement on the game's official Discord channel and within communities on the various social media platforms."
The blog post then expands on what to expect from Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown next year. There'll be a 550km recreation of Hong Kong Island, two clans to prove your worth, and additional beta phases. "The more impatient among you will get the chance to test the game long before it releases. This phase will allow us to gather your valuable feedback so we can keep improving the game's quality until it releases, while also staying in more regular contact with you."

Nice to see they are dropping last gen. I really enjoyed the first one but never got around to the second.
Looking forward to seeing what they do with this.
I can kinda understand this one. These games were always fairly ambitious and it’s more likely that it delivers the massive open world to a high fidelity while travelling at speed with the PS5’s much better data streaming.
Just bring back Test Drive 2: The Duel
Guys, this Game wont look better because of this since the Switch Version is still releasing lol
@nessisonett Its still coming out for Switch lol
@IonMagi It could always be a cloud version 😉
@nessisonett Nope, its a native one. Just like the Hogwarts Game and Alan Wake Remake
I am happy that developers now ditching last gen and will focus on this gen only, thus making games better. Sad because I was looking for this particular game and is now delayed.
I'm upset me and my brother have been fans of the old games and have been looking forward to this game, I've only just been able to buy the ps4 2 years ago, something to play during the lockdowns then at Christmas time the ps5 was released. I can't afford the ps5 plus the shortage I was really looking forward to this and especially giving to my brother as a present who has been going though a rough time for the last 7 years, its going to make him upset as video games have a escapism for him
I don't think the Switch version holds back the PS5 version, otherwise they are just loosing the entire PS4 market size for nothing?
@MattSilverado
No it doesn't as it's a completely different platform so those resource for last gen version and be used too improve the current gen versions and are not hold back by having to make two versions of same game, Also usually switch versions are done by a different team or out sourced to some one else
So it can be made on the Switch but not for the PS4, eh? Hmmm....
Well, enjoy the massive drop in revenue, KT Racing!
@MattSilverado They most likely dont expect many sales on last Gen so they just dropped them. And obviously the weakest contender will always hold back the other Versions, see GT7 and HFW for First Party examples
No big deal & not too surprising. Doubt the Switch version will stick around but we'll find out in due time, still looking forward to this a lot!
Used to love Unlimited, played so much of that on the Xbox back in the day, driving around Hawaii was great fun.
@IonMagi It could be only for a more powerful Switch. Between BotW 2's delay and a bunch of stuff mentioned by Furukawa following the most recent fiscal year earnings report, it does seem like some kind of more powerful Switch is appearing within the next year.
Seeing as they aren't bailing out of the Switch version (which is good news for me because where else would I realistically play it?), it certainly seems like the unmentioned but the equally big factor is dropping Gen 8 in favour of the modern stuff. Compared to the new TV-hooked kids on the console block, Switch and PS4 are both "limited hardware", but guess which one of them can get away with certain downgrades and has QoL flexibility to trade performance/visual parity for. And by 2023, its sales will outnumber that of PS4 as well.
That said, it's an undeniable bummer for all the PS4 folks who don't plan to or still can't upgrade to PS5. (-_-)7
@Grumblevolcano it's been discussed ad nauseaum (by audiences and game devs alike) that "a more powerful Switch" wouldn't open up the gate for more demanding ports as long as they all have to be made with the other models in mind as well - and the ever unlikely "New 3DS" alternative is all the less realistic now as the original "Switch family" sales are well over 100 million now. By now it only makes sense to discuss a Gen 10 successor, but its announcement and launch will heavily depend on the component industry climate since, as has been also discussed more than once, Nintendo will hardly want a PS5 situation on their hands. And if either it or the mythical "Pro" were already on schedule for next year, wouldn't other big announcements like No Man's Sky be targeting a 2023 release as well?
2-3 years from now people will still be complaining why the ps4 version has dropped for other games
"Drops ps4 version" please please 🙏 make this a trend and swiftly
Nice to see the PS4 version, especially when the PS5 shortage will most likely continue for at least 2 or 3 more years...
@Uromastryx I actually agree with you. Drop all PS4 support while there is an incredible PS5 shortage which is mostly being purchased by bots and scalpers. This means I can save more money especially with how gas and food prices have increased. Funny thought, I wonder if enough PS5's exist to make a profit on Test Drive... on second thought, probably not.
@Cyberpunk28
I wouldn't worry about it. It'll probably cost £70 to buy on PS5. If you only have the PS4 for the last 2 years then you have loads of PS4 games to play that are much cheaper to buy.
@IonMagi for now
Nintendo switch version must be cancelled then if it's not a cloud version
Brilliant news!! Last Gen IS holding back creativity and we need to move away.
There’s a big enough backlog for anyone still on PS4 to enjoy and surely they want next gen experiences that can’t be had on BASE PS4
@Cyberpunk28 id recommend you and your brother but WRC 10 for £19.99 and enjoy beating each other’s times.
It’s such a brilliant game and can’t recommend enough, from the same team that’s working on Test Drive 👍🏻
I wish you and your brother every happyness 🌈
@tinCAT-zero WRC 10 cost £49.99 on release by the same team so highly doubt a £70 price as only Sony do this to their customers
@Luigia
I think you're wrong there, as EA are charging €75 the new F1 2022 and I think I've even seen fifa priced at €75.
I don't mind Sony charging £70 for AAA games that have budgets of over 100 million to produce. That's fair, but companies like EA charging €75 for a game that's been in development less that a year, is a rip off.
@tinCAT-zero I stand corrected 🙏🏻😇
@tinCAT-zero I pre-ordered F1 2022 for my son and it cost just over £41 on PS4.
Sony's £70 price point is presumably to cover off the PS5 development costs for the 5 (or is it 6 now?) PS5 exclusives.
@sanderson72
"Presumably!"
The internet is a great spreader of misinformation.
