Looks like Square Enix’s action RPG Valkyrie Elysium is on schedule for its 2022 release, as it’s been rated by a number of classifications boards around the world – including the ESRB. The game, a successor to Valkyrie Profile, was announced back in March during a State of Play with a vague release window of this year, but has largely been kept underwraps since.
“This is an action game in which players assume the role of a Valkyrie tasked with finding and purifying lost souls. From a third-person perspective, players explore environments and battle monsters, fellow Valkyries, and boss characters,” the ESRB’s description explains. It earned a Teen rating for some light cursing and violence.
We assume we’ll get a big Valkyrie Elysium update, including a release date, in the coming weeks. In the meantime, let us know if this game is on your radar at all!

Cautiously optimistic for this one, going to wait on the reviews before I decide if it’s a release day purchase.
This game feels cheap in the previews before, with bad animation, bad environment and bad voice acting, it's looks like a ps3 games. I prefer if squareenix remaster the first game with 2D-HD graphics 😕
This looks way better than the original Valkyrie Profile games, so im looking forward to it. Keep forgetting about it though as I don't think it's been mentioned since the original announcement.
I have zero idea why they chose to abandon the side-scrolling nature of the first two, which in my opinion makes the games so unique. I would love remasters of the first two over this cheap looking mess.
This doesn't look too bad for a character action game; anyone that says it looks like a PS3 game or anything like that, need to go and play a PS3 game to remember how those looked.
The particle effects, lighting, resolution, framerate, physics... Yeah, no. PS4 game, yes, definitely. But saying it looks like a PS3 game isn't even an opinion. It's just straight up wrong. Lmao
It looks rough in the first trailer but at the same time, it looks promising and we haven't had any major Valkyrie games for a long time so I'm going to look forward to this one. I just hope that by the time it gets released, it looks polished enough.
@wiiware I think they believe 2D isnt relevant anymore but the 2D where nice. The same goes for Final HD remasters on PC but not on Playstation.....
We need the previous games on the Ps+ tiers.
I still don't get how we're more than ok with 8/16 bit graphics (which reviewers tend to call "gorgeous"), but ps3 looking games is where we draw the line.
If someone could explain it to me, that'd be great.
The games looks absolutely fine to me. Not every studio has a huge budget, obviously.
@naruball 8/16 bit pixelArt is a style. The use of 3-D models is another style. People of course have preferences for one style or another but ultimately what matters is the artist skill.
If we think about it in terms of fine art it would be absurd to say oil paints are more expensive than water colours. Therefore all oil paintings are better than all watercolours.
I think this game looks fine but it’s certainly not the best example of the use of 3-D models in a video game. If someone produces a pixel art game of the highest quality it will get praised by people who like that style. I certainly wouldn’t consider it inferior because it’s in a older style.
This has stranger of paradise vibes all over it.
Square needs a massive overhaul just like many long standing gaming entities. These old men and their old ideas are growing tiresome.
Their marketing and communication is garbage. Especially when considering the path to release for a game like Guardians of the Galaxy.
Eh. Looks like another generic 3D ARPG. None of the charm of its predecessors.
There’s a lot of debate over like it’s visual quality and stuff like that, but the thing I’m most worried about is its identity. This game looks so generic from an outside perspective. I remember spending almost all the trailer when it was announced thinking it was a new NieR game. I just see nothing on display that would convince me to buy it over other ARPGs like FF16, Lost Soul Aside, etc.
@Flaming_Kaiser I didn't know what the heck the executives at SE are thinking, releasing that port on pc and mobile but not on console, I'm sure the sales will be way better on playstation and switch console compared to pc and mobile.
@wiiware I dont understand either its insane all these companies are weird. We get garbage liveservice games but the games we want they somehow dont want to sell them to us.
@naruball the pixel art games are usually the best use of pixel art often eclipsing what 8bit/16bit consoles produced.
Early 3D from the PlayStation era simply hasn’t aged as well because we’re still evolving what 3D graphics are capable of.
I liked the older games. It shall be engraved upon your soul! Divine assault!
@wiiware Either you're literally blind, or you need to replay an actual PS3 games, because you clearly don't remember how they looked.
That or you're just another annoying troll.
It weird how quite about it they are! They didn't show much after the announcement and they still trying to release it later this year (I think it quite charged)!
I hope it's a good game, because the announcement trailer didn't impress!
Day 1 like with most Square games
If this is still releasing in 2022, then I have high hopes Star Ocean 6 won't be delayed either.
Just re watched the March state of play for it and maybe its just me but this doesnt look good.. Loved the Valkyrie Profile games, but this one I think will be a def wait and see...
The game looks interesting
@GigaGaia I played psone, ps2, ps3, ps4 and ps5 games back then and now, so I think I know more about ps3 graphics quality more than you. Ps3 is the system that has games like uncharted 3 and tlou 1, this game is worse than those 2 games.
They need to show more than what they did. It's not convincing a lot of people.
Definitely curious about how this will turn out. It does seem to lack personality a bit, but I kind of like the slight comic book art style of the characters/monsters. One to keep an eye on…
