The Hunter: Call of the Wild is widely regarded as one of the most relaxing games you can find on console. Ignore the, y’know, hunting aspect, and it’s a gorgeous sandbox you can spend hours hiking through. Fishing seems like the perfect fit for a spiritual successor, then, and here it is in all its glory – Call of the Wild: The Angler.
Technically, this isn’t confirmed for consoles just yet, but developer Expansive Worlds says they will follow the main PC release. The game looks seriously chill in the trailer embedded above, however – you head out into the wilderness with your trusty fishing rod by your side, and see what you can catch. “Ride the open waters and explore a vast, atmospheric environment in search of the perfect fishing spot.”
According to the press release, you’ll be able to play solo, or in online co-op with support for up to 12 players. If you’ll pardon the pun, we can definitely see this catching on; obviously the hunting aspect of the previous release was never going to appeal to everyone, whereas fishing is generally less controversial overall. We’ll keep you updated with regards to a potential PlayStation release date.

I’d quite like a game like this where you just chill with the animals, rather than killing them. As long as you can throw the fish back into the water then I guess this is closer.
I'm surprised that with the explosion of survival games, that there isn't one focused on actual survival or camping.
You could have a huge ass map based on a real or fake swath of land, and then literally hike just to see things. And you could pack supplies, but it'd tire you out quicker, or take less with you but make you fish/hunt small game/scavenge for berries. Maybe even systems to let you build your own crude huts, all that sorta stuff. Just have it all about going places and seeing the sights, while camping and whatnot.
I've played this before. Love the gruff looking Arthur chap that you play as.
I dont mind a bit of fishing but ive never been able to get in to a fishing game before. Saying that tho, good implementation of haptic feedback could really make for a great fishing game.
Damn it. I know this is a PS site but I read it as Breath of the Wild: The Angler. I was confused but pumped at the same time. Then I reread the title and became sad
This is the sort of game I have no interest in but can see myself picking up on sale for a laugh and getting hooked...
I'll get my coat.
@MFTWrecks Red Dead Redemption 2 is so close to being this and I wish there was a separate mode for it just for being a cowboy and that the farming stuff that we get to do in the game becomes fully realized.
theHunter Cotw is a good game with some problems but still fun to play, looking forward to theAngler so long as it like theHunter Cotw monitization wise
We don't need another fishing planet
I have not played The Hunter, so not sure what all that game allows you to do...but what's so controversial about hunting?
I wonder how it would be to have a person stab a hook through my face, lift me around by it, then let me go and claim to be a good person for it.
Eat it, or leave it alone.
