Final Fantasy XIV, the mega-popular MMO that just keeps on keeping on, is currently running a free login campaign, from now until the end of the month, or more specifically, until 30 June 2022, 3:59 pm BST.
This means that if you are eligible you can return to the game for free, without paying the requisite subscription fee for a period of four days, from the time of login. So maybe aim to do it on a Thursday, like today, and you'll be set for the weekend.
Who is eligible? Well, that's where things start to get real Square Enix-y. To be eligible you must meet these requirements three:
- Have previously purchased and registered Final Fantasy XIV
- All registered service accounts must be set as inactive during the campaign period.
- The registered service account must have been inactive for at least thirty days.
So, for those unfamiliar with Square Enix's often Byzantine way of doing things, this offer is for people who have played Final Fantasy XIV previously, do not have an active subscription, and have not had one for at least 30 days.
Of course, if you have never tried it before, you can always sign up for Final Fantasy XIV's free trial, and see what all the fuss is about. If you are still on the fence, check out our review of the base game and its first expansion, Heavensward.
Will you be returning to Eorzea via this free login campaign? Are you up to date with the MSQ? Make fun of Lalafells with us in the comments section below.

Hohoho, well this will do nicely. Haven’t played in a while and could use a weekend trying to get to Heavensward.
I meet all those requirements... Will it be worth it to futz with passwords I forgot?
Maybe....
Oh how I would enjoy playing this game without a subscription service...
I'll likely pop back into Eorzea. Makes a change from not being able to play free login periods due to having an existing account.
I do want to play this game but will not play a game with an on-going monthly subscription.
Give me an opportunity to pay a one-off one and I will look at it.
@BartoxTharglod Pretty sure what they were trying to get across is how they difficult they make it play their games sometimes.
FFXIV is your favorite FF, you know how crappy something like MogStation can be to navigate at times.
This is a good idea, but they should give people that currently have subscriptions the ability to jump ahead of all of the free players in the server que......I mean we have been paying this whole time, we shouldn't have to see 1,000 people waiting ahead of us in the line. Especially folks that is just going to go right back to Fortnite.
nice I'm eligible i'm gonna do some recent patch stuff and some raiding
Definitely using this to get back into it, needed a break after playing through 2 whole batches of patch quests, a full expansion, and a good chunk of shadowbringers plus most of the side content that comes all of that. But it was worth paying the sub, I got my money's worth and then some. And plan to keep going as soon as I catch up a bit more with my neverending backlog that's even more daunting lol
@BartoxTharglod Its not as simple as that and id agree with Khayl here. SE have been dumb as hell since they made the game F2P for the first 30 levels or whatever it is and i'll explain why:
For players who tried the demo or bought FF back in its old broken state, there's no way for us to play up to level 30 or whatever now which everyone else can do as it links to your PSN AND email address and cannot be unlinked fully.
SE customer support is atrocious in assisting with it basically saying you need to use a new email and PSN even though I was level 4 or so when I first played it.
I think I meet these requirements, I tried the 3 month free demo but ended up not using most of it because I just couldn't get into the game. This is terrible timing so I'll probably still not use it though, unfortunately. I still want to get in the game, but with the subscription you have to be either all in or not in at all, and I can't see myself going all in on a consuming single game like that.
@john_c good news, you can literally play the game all the way through a credits roll, for free. No monthly needed; no time restrictions.
@Sixth-Samurai This change was made last year. Paying customers are now prioritized ahead of free subs in the que.
@Nepp67 yeaaa... that won't happen. FFXI still requires a sub to play it.
@Sixth-Samurai When's the last time you played there should be no reason there are 1000 in que at this point.
@pharos_haven I know it won't happen that's why I'm sticking to playing Guild Wars 2 which doesn't require a sub.
This promotion seems squarely (pun intended) aimed at getting players to return rather than enticing new players. Not a bad move. If they had a promotion for new players, I'd try out the game. I am not interested in getting absolutely dominated by a game again, like I was with World of Warcraft, so I'd have to see if the game makes sense to play casually.
@Nepp67 No, you wouldn't... it'd be a shell of what makes it brilliant. If you can afford the price of a AA title every six months you can afford FFXIV.
@TheCollector316 They have a promotion for new players... it's the free trial that also includes the award winning expansion Heavensward with all content up to lvl60 with no restrictions.
@Mintie
I never knew that. It is not available free through Steam, which is the only place I looked. I am on the site now and can see the free download. You can indeed play until level 60 for free without play time restrictions, but my goodness, there are lots of ways the experience is gimped. I suppose that makes sense to prevent people perpetually playing for free.
Thanks for the reply.
@pharos_haven @This_guy Was on day before yesterday, saw the numbers, and said "screw it"
@BartoxTharglod I played it was relaunched as "a realm reborn" you are correct.
I never bought it however, that was a then 48 hour trial or something as part of a PSN promotion to drive customers.
SE then later brought in the 60 level "unlimited" free trial which as a previous trial member means I get no access to it.
Multiple queries to mogstation support and they say you cant do it. You have to use a separate PSN and email.
Multiple forums all say the same thing for folk like us caught in the same hole.
Its stupid as if I got a proper go at it especially since I tried it nearly 10 years ago now and so much has changed, I'd likely be tempted to go all in but SE want to punish potential customers so i'll not bother and im not jumping through hoops to circumvent their stupid systems.
