Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed that it's now sold more than 20 million PS5 consoles worldwide. As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, the platform holder has reached this figure not long after its last financial reports in early May. At the time, Sony stated it had shipped 19.3 million units, but it's now crossed over the milestone.
In a statement, SVP and Head of Global Sales and Business Operations Veronica Rogers thanks fans for the ongoing support, and assures that PS5 production will increase going forward. "To those fans who have yet to get their hands on a console, please know that we are planning on a significant ramp-up in PS5 production this year and we are working endlessly to make sure that PlayStation 5 is available for everyone who wants one," she says.
Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad has posted the following sales comparison between PS5 and PS4, to give some perspective:
With demand far outweighing supply thanks to ongoing issues with a shortage of parts, PS5 is currently lagging behind PS4's sales momentum, but Sony is aiming to turn that around. The company forecasts the new console will overtake PS4 in 2024, assuming it can straighten everything out as it intends.

There's only one way for the P-People.
I waited to buy a PS4 until it had been on the market for about ten months because I had no interest in the release lineup. But when I went to buy one, I had absolutely no trouble. The shelves were full. That's obviously not the case now with the PS5. I know that more sales are a good thing for Sony, but as a long time PS gamer, its very frustrating that I'm having so much harder of a time finding one for myself due to much higher demand. Fingers crossed that they do actually increase production and most of us who want one can get it.
No excuses not to get one. They have plenty in used stores in the uk.
@Ryany That doesn't tie with ps5 selling very well brand new all the time. If there were plenty 2nd hand they too would all be bought up.
It goes without saying, but don't buy from CEX. They are selling them for £535, and that's without any games. As if going into their store, and having your nasal cavity hit buy the scene of Eu Du BO, wasn't bad enough, they try to gouge shoppers. £535 for a console, that is in a poorer condition than what CEX would accept.
@KayOL77 I'm pretty sure he's suggesting to pay scalper prices.
@IMustardMitt better than their 800 quid prices a year ago from Cex.
PS5 is a fantastic system. I just wish it was more accessible. I got lucky getting mine but have had zero luck getting my little brother one.
I’m happy to wait for a PS5 slim, which will hopefully coincide with when developers are no longer hindered by having to take the PS4 into account
@uptownsoul To be fair, Currys (still have some) and Game (sold out yesterday) quite often have stock - problem is they're often in bundles with pointless accessories or games you don't want for about the £650 to £700 mark.
Most of the ones now are the Horizon Forbidden West packs so no interest from me at the moment. A base console with an extra controller and a charging dock would be a better bet.
£450 for the console alone is just about acceptable but pushing £700 is just too much.
I got mine in the UK by following a twitter channel that sends out a post when sites get stock updates. If you don't want to pay scalpers on principle (as i did) you can get one like this, it'll just take abit of effort...but trust me, it will work.
@uptownsoul do I have a link? It's at cex where I live they had loads when I went in the other day do a stick check on the website yourself
Grats to Sony on hitting 20 million PS5 sales!
RAMP IT UP! RAMP IT UP! SONY!!! What a shame about the chip problem I really wanted the PS5 to smash every record going. Oh well hopefully they can RAMP it up like they say
I remember going into Argos last Sept/Oct and hearing a sale person saying he’s LOADS of PS5’s in the back but can’t sell them! He said Sony say when they can sell and wasn’t sure why they were stock piling!
Having owned a PS5 from lunch, apart from Astrobot I’ve not played anything that couldn’t be done on a BASE PS4, well apart from Returnal.
Day one 🤷🏻♂️
Wasn’t even that hard
They need to. So many people want one that are struggling more than they should be to get one
I bet Sony are kicking themselves. They could have sold the console at £100 more and it would still be sold out everywhere. Not that I'm bothered. Still no games on it to justify buying.
