We all know that the PS5 is a bit of a beast in terms of size – love it or loathe it, the console is borderline obnoxious, isn’t it? Given the ongoing semiconductor shortages, it’ll probably be a good few years before we get a PS5 Slim, so one industrious YouTuber has taken on the task himself. This is actually a really entertaining and watchable video – there’s a lot of digestible information on Sony’s original hardware design, for example.
The goal for DIY Perks is to shrink the entire chassis down to just 2cm in height, which if you own a PS5 you’ll know seems impossible. The way he does it is by stripping out pretty much all of its cooling and building a new water system, which he then rigs up to a gigantic power brick that’s intended to be kept out of sight. So, it’s cheating in a way, because he actually makes the system bigger if you factor in the fans and power, but we can respect the effort.
Obviously when Sony does build a real PS5 Slim, it’ll work to reduce the overall power draw of the device, allowing it to shrink the cooling components. But given that DIY Perks is working with the original hardware, we found this an enjoyable watch. Are you holding out hope for a smaller PS5 in the future? Shrink your system down in the comments section below.

2CM isn't just slim, it's miniscule! 🤣 seriously impressive work going on there.
Just watched this video before the article went live. Impressive work, although the external power supply/cooling solution is huge which kinda negates the whole idea. Still it's an amazing piece of art👍
Hes built a DVD player
It looked simple yet beautiful.
I want to see PS5 Slim have thickness like that and of course in White color. 🥰
Certainly an impressive looking console if you ignore the power brick which also doubles as the water cooler too.
@mrtennis1990 one of these would cost way too much for Sony to consider to manufacture
Behold! The PS5 Slim! Now even bigger!
Already seen comments on YouTube and Twitter saying that Sony needs to do this, should be embarrassed, and that the original design has been put to shame.
Really makes you wish people would actually watch the video before typing anything!
So instead of needing to take my door off the hinges to move my ps5 in, I could simply slide this underneath the door. Mind blowing.
@ShogunRok Imagine trying to mass produce this....
That was a fantastic video. Really impressive stuff. The console looks gorgeous as well. Cheating slightly with the lower temps due to having the power supply outside of the system. But still, brilliant work.
It's just after watching the full presentation that I noticed in the video thumbnail the massive cables coming out of the supposedly slim PS5 😅. But what a feet, I salute his time and effort.
Guess I'm in the minority. Can't say I'm impressed. It's like creating the most compact electric car that then has to drag around a massive caravan that houses the battery etc. How's that clever or impressive? Seems people are so easily impressed these days. But maybe that's a good thing, considering the current climate.
hes very good at what he does love the laptop pc and daylight window he's done. the battery scares the life out of me 🤣
I thought this was really cool as a thing, and the thermal results were incredible. I'd even consider paying real money for it. He did gloss over the sheer size of the PSU and radiator set up, pretty sure I couldn't fit that behind my TV, but I'd find somewhere. Now if only it could accommodate a disc drive....
I think its ugly and where is my discdrive. 🤪
Its impressive but i dont want a brick and thick tubing sticking out.
But seriously man those dbrand covers are ugly as sin that target for cooling. And putting a sticker on the glossy plastic ruins it even more. The more i look at my PS5 the more i like it in white. 😁👍
Although interesting, I don't get the point of this project. You can't label that as a PS5 slim when it's got thick cabling and a stupidly oversized power supply and radiator hanging out the back. Why highlight impressive temps when you're using a 40cm wide water tank with 7 fans attached to the side to cool it down 😂
@Eldritch Solely because many people are not haters, they can appreciate the craft and the art without needing to post about how they don't like it because its impractical and people are easily wowed.
You clearly missing the point of this fun project doesn't make it less impressive. Its cool to see what is a 10 foot PS5 condensed into 2cm. Thats it.
@theMEGAniggle You're putting words in my mouth. I never mentioned whether I liked or disliked it. I merely said I wasn't impressed. Hardly makes me a "hater". Seems people are not only easily impressed but also quick to cast aspersions on other people's character.
Reminded me of the original Xbox 360 and Xbox One with their power bricks only much much shinier.
@Eldritch Well, it's a fun project that makes for an entertaining video. Obviously this could never be a commercial product, though.
The guy in the video recognises that, though, it's just some silly people on social media who are suggesting otherwise.
Cool.Bring on the ps5 pro playas.word up son
I doubt this would hold up in terms of thermal dissipation. It probably at least reduces component life.
EDIT: clearly I didn’t watch the video.
@Eldritch Even if you aren't impressed with the end product, the skill and ingenuity on display to make something so small and have it not burst into flame instantly is impressive. The guy is a very skilled craftsman.
His custom water block is really neat and could have some practical purposes for a marketable product: having a liquid-cooled solution for PS5 that wouldn't increase the size of the original consoles form-factor.
It could probably be the same size as the PS5; but significantly more efficient on the thermals across the board. The remaining bulk would just be for tubing, power supply, and cooling block.
Ya know… now that I think about it… why didn’t more manufacturers mount the power supply outside of the console?
I know it’s a bit annoying to mount the brick (I built some brackets that held my 360’s PSU to the wall behind the console) but it does return dividends on thermal management. It’s typically the second hottest item in a design after the APU block itself.
Cool video. Wondering if someone out there made a slim ps5, but with everything inside. Then tested temps. It's definitely a "interesting thing I did" but not a practical solution.
Very cool concept. Though I’m reality the power brick and cooler look like they actually make the whole volume LARGER.
Title should be:
"PS5 Split in 2, Takes Up more Space Than the Original"
Was a fun video. I guess I knew by the fact its 2cm wide that this wasn't possible without an ext cooling system. When you start getting into the higher TFLOPS the cooling systems get bigger and more complex. i'm impressed the PS5 and Series X are as small as they are given some of the huge PC's I have owned in the not so distant past. I don't think we will see a slim until there is a significant leap in the size reduction of cooling systems and cost reduction.
Interesting video, I can imagine that as child he did cool stuff with a Lego set.
The dbrand trimmed side plates and tape, both in matte black, definitely improves the look of a PS5, especially in the horizontal position.
My first thought on reading the headline?; "What about the cooling system?".
Gotcha
That was very cool, didn’t think they could get it that small. Very nice job.
I don't have problem with power brick but this is a bit too much, I still want a slim ps5 though since ps5 is a hassle to move when I'm cleaning my tv cabinet.
I hope sony will design a normal horizontal console for the slim.
It's a shame Sony gets a lot of flack for the PS5's design - they definitely tried something unique. Honestly, I kinda love the design they went for; I can see why some don't, but I'd take a V-shaped monolith over another rectangular box any day of the week.
I actually saw this video yesterday before this post, but I think what he has done is amazing. Sure, there’s an external power brick the size of a small car, but the guy’s ingenuity is always great to watch.
@TwoPieceTanookiSuit I also kinda love the design, and definitely better than the noisy PS4/Pro.
I think the biggest issue people have with both consoles is the practicality of where you actually put the giant beasts. Neither PS5 or XSX fit inside my tv stand - well XSX would JUST fit but with no ventilation. Thankfully I have a subwoofer that the PS5 sits on prominently like a piece of modern art and the XSX hides elegantly behind the TV 😂
@rjejr Haha! Exactly that. Slim 2cm thick water cooled PS5*
(Small print) * with a water cooler and power brick much larger than the original PS5.
It’s cool (sic) but also pretty disingenuous
I love Matt from DIY perks and usually watch green with envy, because he does such cool projects and he's super enthusiastic about them.
@themightyant Yeah, tell me about it! My PS5 is bigger than my damned TV! Admittedly, my TV is absolutely tiny, but still, pretty crazy!
@TwoPieceTanookiSuit Just move closer to the TV, makes it seem bigger, and the PS5 like the Burj Khalifa. lol
@themightyant Way ahead of ya! I'm always right up by the TV - I feel like such an old man trying to read the miniscule subtitles and menus on the TV.
That is my Motherboard and water block on one of my Gaming PCs 🤣
Nicely done, puts my water cooled PCs to shame. But really I'll just hide my PS5 behind my TV
