Point-and-click icon Guybrush Threepwood will make his grand return later this year – but not on PS5 and PS4 at first. Return to Monkey Island – the continuation of the classic series – will launch as a timed console exclusive on the Nintendo Switch in 2022, with other platforms presumably to follow at a later date.
“Return to Monkey Island is an unexpected, thrilling return of series creator Ron Gilbert that continues the story of the legendary adventure games The Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games,” the website’s blurb excitingly explains.
The overview continues: “It’s been many years since Guybrush Threepwood was last locked in a battle of wits with his nemesis, the zombie pirate LeChuck. His true love, Elaine Marley, has turned her focus away from governing and Guybrush himself is adrift and unfulfilled, having never found the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, young pirate leaders led by Captain Madison have shuffled the old guard from power, Melee Island has taken a turn for the worse, and famed businessman Stan has been imprisoned for ‘marketing-related crimes’.”
While the gameplay will be familiar – expect context sensitive dialogue and plenty of inventory management – the developer’s promising a “clever evolution of classic adventure game controls”. The art direction has also been completely overhauled, with Tearaway’s Rex Crowle leading the efforts and settling on a much more cartoon-style look.
We’ll contact publisher Devolver Digital and try to find out how long we’ll have to wait for PlayStation ports, but we’re not expecting a response.

The art style reminds me of Guacamelee! a little bit
Ugh it's a timed switch exclusive? I wasn't aware of that. Been one of my most anticipated games for this year.
@Jayslow Nobody was before today
@Jayslow Yeah we didn't know until today. It's a bummer but hopefully not too long!
Playstation really has a hard time with getting hyped up Indie Games to launch on their Platforms Day1. Or they dont care lol.
@IonMagi I mean, that's not true. Stray, for example, springs to mind. I think these are a free for all between all platform holders.
Eurgh devastated this is a timed exclusive. I hope its only 3 months or something
@get2sammyb Stray, Sifu..sure. But Im more talking about Indie Games that are either from an already established IP or hyped up. Legend of Wright only now launches on PS, Silksong will launch on everything but Playstation, new Monkey Island Game, High on Life, Valheim and so on and so on
Unfortunately the developer has form for this as Thimbleweed Park was also a timed exclusive, (Xbone in that case)....but had hoped this being Monkey Island & Devolver Digital publishing it'd be multformat day 1! Sigh! 😔
Eh, PlayStation has timed exclusives for no reason all the time. One timed exclusive from Nintendo can't hurt.
Still stings a little, but it'll come over soon to PlayStation anyways.
Prefer the old art style to this one but more Monkey Island is always a good thing.
Really looking forward to this, but will probably pick it up on Switch as I may not be able to wait for the inevitable PS5/PS4 release. I’m a big fan of Rex Crowle too, so it’s good to know he done the art for the game.
@Voltan Yep, reminds me of Guacamelee! 2, too!
Huh, Switch fans play like dairy farmers …
Not feeling the art style. Would prefer that they used something more akin to Curse of Monkey island.
❤️❤️❤️
Big fan of the new art direction. Curious about the interface and how you interact with your surroundings. These games are charming, and as funny as hell. Have just replayed all of them and cannot wait to get my hands on this.
I do own a switch so maybe I’ll play it on that, although, if there is the option of playing it in 4k when it eventually comes to PlayStation I will have to hold out.
Hype levels to 10.
@SAMTYLER1974 how appropriate that you play like a cow...
@Voltan I was thinking the same thing.
I got a Nintendo switch so I am happy 😎
@Voltan
This was exactly my first impression when I saw it in the Direct! And I'm not sure if I'm happy with it.
@get2sammyb Timed exclusive is fine by me, but can we play the earlier games on PS4 yet?
No PlayStation -> no buy
@KidBoruto You can stream the PS3 versions with PS Plus Premium. That's all I know of.
@get2sammyb Thanks, I'll look into those later today if I have time.
@ApostateMage yeah funny you say that as while I watching this kinda wished the graphics were like the pixelated originals…
Is Dominic Armato still voicing Guybrush? He sounds kind of different.
Played through the original again when it saw console release; that was enough for me thanks and that was after the initial overhaul which was... quite a long time ago in itself now 😗
Well, that art style sure killed my interest in buying it. Blergh.
@KidBoruto The Monkey Island 1 & 2 Special Editions were never ported to later gen ps4/XB/SW. Given Disney shuttered Lucasfilm as a developer, not sure if any 3rd party publishers would see enough profit porting them & paying Disney the licensing fees more's the pity!😕
They show up on sale on GOG & Steam from time to time & old PC'S like I had until recently ran it fine so probably a cheaper bet vs streaming it.
@Robocod I don't game on PC at all sadly due to preference/choice!
Here's hoping the new game sells well enough to justify ports of the older titles.
@KidBoruto Understandable! I'm far removed from being a PC Master race gamer vs Sony as you'd get! But use mine mostly for the classics,(using ScummVM),& some of the oldies that pop up on GOG,& emulation of other oldies & the odd indie that doesn't come to PS or ever gets a sale on psn.
Does sadden me that Sony's ps1/ps2 emulation efforts have gotten progressively more lacklustre even with the revamped ps plus...they just don't want to put in more than a minimal effort as its not deemed profitable vs live services.
@Robocod Yeah I don't care for live service games, only play single player games offline.
