Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief is a stealth action game coming to PS4 on 11 October in North America, and Europe on 14 October. It gives us some serious Tenchu nostalgia, perhaps partly because Kamiwaza is a remaster of a 2006 PS1 game that is only now making its way to the West.
You play as a reformed thief who must once again return to Mikado's seedy underworld to save the life of your adopted daughter. All the hallmarks of classic Tenchu stealth gameplay are there, except as a thief, there is less of a focus on, you know, murder.
Does Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief transport you back to the halcyon days of the PS1? Does this older style of stealth gameplay hold up in 2022? Sneak into the comments section below.

Me while watching the trailer: This game looks like crap! Oh wait this looks like tenchu, is this made by Acquire? Oh ***** it is! Pre ordered!!!!
To my mind, it isn't a good idea to create a remaster of the game which wasn’t published outside Japan before. The main factor for such projects is gamers’ nostalgia, but it’s hard to feel something like that in a game you’ve never seen. The game you didn’t get any opportunity to play.
If Sony or any other publisher made a remaster of the Syphon Filter trilogy, I would be the first in the line to buy it, but this one… No, thanks.
They should make a successor to Shinobido
This is hilarious, and now seeing Acquire is involved this became one of my most anticipated titles of the year.
@gotDvamp I’m pretty sure that Japanese gamers are as nostalgic as anyone else, so maybe remastering the game isn’t such a bad idea. Also, those of us outside of Japan will get to experience it for the first time with a bit of modern polish. I don’t see any negatives here.
Feel bad for nitpicking but the article says PS1 when it was a PS2 game!
This makes me want a new Way of the Samurai game
@nessisonett That’s a big difference lol.
@gotDvamp No it's not. The main factor for re releases or remasters of old games is so a new audience can enjoy them.
Unfortunately most Sony fans don't understand the importance of backwards compatability and seem to think the five PS2 games avaliable on PlayStation 4/5 is good enough.
At this point I don't understand how PlayStation 5 has managed to outsell the Xbox Series X when Sony offers little. No true competitor to Game Pass, no proper backwards compatability apart from PS4 titles and all the exclusives are coming to PC now.
Even the Switch offers more in regards to past games with the NES online. I enjoyed playing Mario Kart 1 for the very first time this year to see where the series started. No nostalgia about it.
@MickOnYourFace A new Way of the Samurai game would be amazing. And at this point, I could settle for remasters of the originals until a new title.
@IonSur
Unfortunately it’s the main factor in the ideal world where plenty of gamers are ready to try something new. Usually publishers choose games that are known to a wide audience.
In addition, it doesn’t matter whether a gamer played the concrete project or not. It’s more important if they heard something about the one or not. That’s why publishers don’t hurry up to re-releases unknown games.
If you look at the modern market, you won't see a lot of unknown projects that were refurbished to be released on modern systems.
It isn’t good of course, but we have what we have. What about me? I like trying something new.
