The absolutely iconic Shantae may have been something of a commercial flop when it first released for the Game Boy Color in 2002 – but its legacy lives on 20 years later. Shantae has, of course, gone on to become a moderately popular character across various games – all of which are playable on the PS5 and PS4, apart from the original. Until now!
That’s right, WayForward’s legendary 8-bit Shantae game is flipping its hair to Sony’s contemporary consoles. The title was ported to Nintendo Switch last year, using Limited Run Games’ spangly Carbon Engine, and is getting the PlayStation treatment in the near future. There’s no firm release date announced, although pre-orders for physical copies will open on 26th August, 2022.
“In her debut title, Shantae hair-whips, dances, and transforms as she seeks out four elemental stones hidden throughout Sequin Land to put a stop to the nefarious lady pirate, Risky Boots,” the press release teases. “During her quest, she'll explore treacherous labyrinths, gain amazing new powers, conquer mini-games, and meet up with friends such as Bolo, Sky, and Rottytops!”
It’s a bit of a classic this one, so it’s nice to see it finally stepping outside of the Nintendo ecosystem.

Actually hard to believe this series is 20 years old now.
I could have swore this was already announced.
@Haruki_NLI It technically was. They said all five were coming to PS5 a year ago, but very little was mentioned about the GBC one. Now it's happening at last.
Very nice.
The GBC original is one of the best games on that platform. I snagged the LRG reprint of the Game Boy cartridge, but it'll be nice to have this digitally on other consoles as well. Might spring for this version if it has a reasonable platinum trophy.
Took what felt like an eternity for the other games to hit psn sales after an overly long hiatus,(albeit not helped by Sony's invite only system & lack of account managers),nice to finally get the complete set!👍
Agree with the mixed emotions about LRG albeit at least it's not paywalled extra content like Wonder Boy Anniversary is from Strictly Limited Games!
@get2sammyb Is it ONLY physical and Limited Run or is it digital too?
@Ralizah got myself a copy too. Looks real nice with the stand they provided.
I think the guy from Modern Vintage Gamer had a hand in the modern console port so happy to give this a try
