Naughty Dog has this morning shared another comparison video highlighting the differences between its PS5 remake of The Last of Us: Part I and the 2013 original on PS3. The latest look focuses on Tess during a pivotal scene in the game, and it demonstrates just how much of a leap forward the remake will be. With so much more emotion to convey, the updated model looks almost lifelike. See for yourself in the quick clip embedded below.
It's also important to remember that in the game, Tess is said to be in her 40s. The PS3 model always looked a little too young for that age bracket, and the updated PS5 version looks like a much more accurate take on her real age. It also resembles Tess' voice actress a lot more, Annie Wersching.
For more comparison shots focusing on Joel and Ellie, click the link. The Last of Us: Part I releases for PS5 on 2nd September 2022, but do these updated models convince you it's worth a purchase? Decide in the comments below.

i get that this will look a lot better, but honestly this is the third time they have released this game - why not spend the time they used on this developing something new
Does it look technically more impressive? Yes but so far all we've seen are the cutscenes, which graphics aside are exactly the same. I'd much rather they showcase how the gameplay from part 2 has been integrated and how the gameplay environments have been adapted to take advantage of them
@Scoobijohn Because why create something completely new if you can just milk fans instead?
Yeah. But there's been an updated version since the PS3 one already...
I love Sony but this project is really annoying me. Was always a bit, whatever, but the pricing has cemented it as a joke. Elden Ring cost me nearly half that amount.
Shame they made her look older, but if it’s more suited to the character age then I guess it’s appropriate.
Does look a lot better.
Still never a £70 game though :') Come on Sony, who are you kidding. £34.99.
I can't wait for this bad boy! I hope we can just use the 3d audio now, instead of the listen button.
Looks amazing.
I’m really hoping for a remake of FIFA 2018 next. The grass will look perfect with todays tech.

Right: Real life
Ive actually never completed this game but i did put a few hours in to the remaster. I would pick up the native ps5 game but certainly not for £70. It wont be long before the market is flooded with used copies and its on offer for £29.99 just like the Nathan drake collection. This is one i can wait for.
@Perturbator catfishing at its finest 😂
Ordered it the other day.
Can't wait to play it again with the upgrades.
I agree its better they look two different ages but does strike me that it doesnt look massively different. Seeing as there is 9 years and 2 console generations between the pics I dont think its a huge improvement. Does kinda feels we are at the peak of graphics now dont think we are going to get much more improvements going forward
Haven‘t ordered it the other day. Can‘t wait to ignore it.
Using a low bit-rate Twitter video to show a glow-up is the worst way to do it. As is showing pre-rendered cut-scenes from PS4 which already looked fantastic. Show in game highlight the major differences there. Show gameplay, are there any changes there or is it TLOU1 move set? So far they really haven't convinced us this is worth £10 upgrade, let alone £35 or even £70!!!
My thoughts on TLOU 1 are, the price will come down and Sony will continue to have a version to sell to the PS5 generation and future generations.
I think it's a case of planning for the future. It probably seems bizarre but not everyone has played TLOU. I like the idea of the new version. I've played the PS3 version twice and the PS4 version at least 4 times. It's an incredible game that should never be forgotten and this remake is addressing that.
If all Naughty Dog is interested in is cutscenes and graphics, maybe they should transitition in to being a film studio?
I get that tv shows/movies and games promote each other, but even casual audiences aren't dumb enough to spend a lot of money on the same story, right?
@tinCAT-zero Sony have a version to sell, and people have a version to buy. The remaster is right there, and it's cheap.
This new remaster isn't about keeping an old title alive, nor is it about the people who haven't played it. If this was the case, Sony would be looking at remastering the huge catalogue of games that haven't transitioned over to PS4 yet.
This is purely about trying to cash in on the tie in with the TV series.
@thefourfoldroot1 She looks like her VA, Annie Wersching, now, which is pretty dope.
@Richnj
Your wrong. The PS4 remaster is going to get very old looking very quickly. Imagine what it'll look like is about 5 years? It's going to age.
Who's to say we will not see anymore remasters / remakes? A lot of people hope Bloodborne will get a remake.
looks amazing, great job.
probably not gonna pay full price, but maybe in a year will defo support the game, once again.
@tinCAT-zero How can I be wrong about it looking old, when I never said anything about how it looks?
My argument is that the title is available to purchase and play on the PS5, which it is. So is Blooborne for that fact. You said "Sony will continue to have a version to sell to the PS5 generation and future generations." which is currently the case.
Unless of course, you are of the opinion that the playability of a game is determined by the graphics. Which,
"The PS4 remaster is going to get very old looking very quickly"
Seems the case.
People that played this before are not main buyers on this from Sony but new people to playstation and watch tv serie.
We all know that if they did a new release for pc only, all older players will yell at Sony for not fixing a ps5 version also.
Wow what difference, if this looks the same while in-game then looks like I’ll be playing through this for the third time but no way would I pay £70 for it, I’d rent it instead.
Today's top headline: 'Game released 9 years and 2 generations ago looks better and more realistic on current gen hardware shocker.'
The very least ND should have done is compile both games together. Or just made something new and stop fleecing people.
I’ve completed both versions many times and I want this even tho initially i was unsure and yes I’ll give them £70 for that experience
And I’m ok with that Infact I’m happy about it 😊 seamless story experience from part 1 to part 2 , what a ride
It loooks better than the first batch of comparison pictures of Ellie and Ellie and Joel.
The Ellie on her own picture I was like.....which is the remaster?
The Ellie with Joel in the car......remaster is a bit better but honestly it was a minor bump.
(The honestly made me think it wasnt even worth bothering with a rmake)
This Tess has don a lot to reverse my initial thoughts of the remake
@Scoobijohn
I heard that Naughty Dog decided to do the remake as a learning process for PS5 programming while other projects were still in pre-production.
Therefore giving the team some good experience which hopefully we'll see the returns in their next titles down the road.
Plus it's an easy cash grab too of course.
@Mintie
Nah, just googled the woman and she looks much better. Although haven’t seen her without make up obviously. Bit of a trend to “uglify” models in games unfortunately. Not that I think she shouldn’t look like this in the game, but why do they always model after glamorous women then make them look worse, why not just model after a normal looking woman in the first place 🤷♂️
Well, I huffed at the length of the clip. More please, Naughty Dog!
I think we have to remember that the first game came out at the tail end of the PS3 - it pushed the console to breaking point - and this remake, although a PS5 release, is basically running on the same engine that powered Part II, a PS4 game. So no, the upgrade isn't going to be as significant as it might seem on paper.
Saying that; Tess on the left looks like a videogame character, Tess on the right looks like a real person.
It looks great & is on the level of part 2 but I already bought this game twice. I'm a big ND fan but the price of this version is a bit off imo
Lol let's see the haters try and say there's no difference 😂😂
Those that do need to go to specsavers, actually could make this their next advert 🤔😂
This is just boring. A ten year old game slightly updated selling at a premium. Naughty dog are lazy and couldn't be bothered to come up with a new game or even a sequel or something. Sad times when people are praising this drek
@Scoobijohn
Why make something new, when people pay full price for 9/10year old games?
Need to see proper gameplay if they really want to impress.
I'm sceptical of how it'll be improved but we'll see
The price will definitely hurt this release, especially without factions too. The game will look great, graphically it's a no brainer. But I couldn't justify paying £70 for essentially the same game but nicer graphics. For the first time buyers it will definitely be worth it.
Maybe they should add some new segments or an after story attachment as to what happens between part 1 and 2. That would bolster the reasons for purchase.
This is clearly pandering to new players and non playstation owners also which is a worrying direction Sony are taking. What's the point in owning a playstation when all our "exclusives" are going to be basically timed exclusives. They are forgetting why people buy playstations instead of a PC or whatever.
Legacy playstation owners who have been loyal for years are an after thought now, which I presume is a lot of people on this site.
I'll be speaking with my wallet anyway and hopefully others unhappy with this direction do the same
Dunno why people bother so much. So it's £70. (Let's be honest it'll definitely be £60 or less somewhere before release. Buy it, enjoy it, sell it a week later for £50+
@thefourfoldroot1 you can say that again, just looked her up and the woman is beautiful.
Aww. Tess was a milf but now she looks like Joel's Mum!
@Futureshark nice positive take and an interesting internal idea that’s realised
Love the better graphics and AI but honestly prefer the way Tess looked in the original. Am I the only person who finds it odd that no gameplay has been shown yet? Something fishy is going on lol
@Richnj
You didn't say anything about it getting old, that was my argument. Plus I never said anything about graphics being tied to gameplay. Don't be trying to put words in my mouth.
Your argument now is going in the direction of raking over who said what.
The ones complaining are the same ones who buy COD and FIFA every year…not to mention Skyrim….
She looks amazing for the remake and matches her age. I prefer the older one though. The original that is not the one that looks like I was frozen for 20 years and just woke up
3rd version of the same game. Shame ND didn't use some of that time on making a new IP
Still nope! Absolute robbery that they want the full price for the game when they're only using the TLOU2 engine for this game. They've not recorded new voice lines, didn't write a new full story etc. Nothing justifies the asking price.
@Kairu It's just the single player, no Factions.
Everyone make sure to buy the PS4 remaster before Sony pulls a Sony and delists it!
This looks nothing like Tess though. Now I know what boomers felt like when Hollywood "updates" all their classic films.
@bindiana What I actually noticed is less the change in the look and age of her static face, but more the large difference in facial gesture animation and body animation. Just that small clip shows how taking in a big sigh like that we can now see Tess’s thorax move better to inflate and deflate when she breathes out. I never realized that in older gen games the characters’ breathing animation looks so unnatural. Much more realistic in the upgraded video. Also her brow furrows better, etc. so it conveys the emotion of that little moment a little better.
That said, am I going to buy this at full price? I don’t think so! 😅
@SuperPotato316
You do realise that a collectors edition of a game being sold out has almost nothing to do with sales of the main game, right? Not to say that it won't sell well, but even games that sold poorly have a collectors edition that sold out before release. Hardcore fans, collectors and scalpers will inevitably jump on the chance to get their hands on that stuff.
@Shstrick sadly wouldn’t surprise me if Sony did that.
We've come a long way in nine years. Wow!
I am not paying $70 for this game, but I'll buy it at $35 or less. This is a remaster of a remaster that I bought, which itself is a remaster of a game I bought. They are not getting another $70 out of me. They honestly should have released it at a budget price point, like $40 or $50, but they know some people will buy it at $70 and then they can lower the price to capture more sales and lower it again, etc. You know, supply and demand.
Really impressive graphics, but damn... I didn't expect that Tess was meant to look so haggard, haha. Makes sense, with it being the apocalypse and all, but ps3 Tess looks way younger/hotter.
Suppose they took the time between versions into account and aged her in real life 😉
For those who played the game to hell, I can see why you’d be upset. But for those of us who only played through and beat it once, this is really exciting.
This will be especially true for those of us who didn’t join the TLOU 2 hate bandwagon and are excited to see these 2 amazing games be on the same level of care and quality.
@Blaze215 "Naughty dog are lazy and couldn't be bothered to come up with a new game or even a sequel or something"
oh noes. You figured them out. That's totally it. Their laziness and inability to come up with a new game or sequel in a few months led to this.
@EquiinoxGII the price is ridiculous, but it's not true at all that the only difference is in graphics.
Of course people are complaining that she isn’t as ‘hot’ as she was. Grow up.
@mrtennis1990 The game comes out in September, they'll show plenty of it over the next three months. They've already said as much!
No one is forcing you to buy this, guys. You don't want to spend £70 on it, then don't. Enough with the "but why??? It's £70!!" nonsense already - those who want a remake will buy it, everyone else - enjoy your lives 👍
The difference is actually mind blowing lol.
I actually preferred her old look same with Joel and Elle and tommy preferred the look of the character models in the original
@SoulChimera FIFA 2013 more like since that was when TLoU was released. You'd pay £70 wouldn't you to see the handsome Wayne "Shrek" Rooney in 4k? 🤣
@nessisonett Probably the same people leaving the metacritic reviews of Returnal that simply said "Why is she so ugly?"
@Richzx6r I mean as consumers, they do have a right to have their own opinions.
@get2sammyb good point I totally forgot it comes out then!
@themightyant They absolutely have and if you can't see it you need glasses. No seriously, book an appointment with an eye doctor. You also may be mentally unwell, so I would suggest an appointment with a neurologist.
@SolaceCreed for sure, but if they're not going to consume this particular product anyway; maybe they could focus their energies elsewhere? For the good OF ALL HUMANITY
@naruball a few months? Tlou2 didn't come out a few months ago. They could have been spending this time creating a new IP not rehashing a previous game that most people have already played and at full price. It's lazy and if you and others think otherwise then that's why they will keep getting away with it, congrats
@Richzx6r
Well their MP division is still working on Factions 2.
They're helping other studios by the sounds of it as well as this too.
@Blaze215 if you believe this is the only thing they've been working on since the sequel came out, I don't know what to tell you.
Looking forward to this game.
I remember playing this on the PS3, and being terrified by it.
Brilliant game, with a great story. Replaying it at the minute, actually.
Hopefully, they will re-release a NATIVE PS5 version of Part 2 (sorry, Part II), as well.
@Futureshark
Not the first time they did it either. The original TLOU Remaster for PS4 was primarily done as a learning experience on new hardware.
That’s an advantage of doing this. It allows them to experiment with the new hardware and minimize costs by reusing assets.
@Blaze215
From what I understand only a relatively small team worked on this Remake. The majority are working on the new Factions stand alone game and apparently Neil Druckmann has a small side team doing pre production work on some other rumored project.
Naughty Dog is a big studio. They have several different teams. They don’t do one game at a time anymore. Last time they did that was Uncharted 2, when they were a fraction of the size they are now.
I wouldn’t be surprised if what is left over of the “ICE Team” is who did this remake. Their technical development support staff basically. ICE became legendary back in the PS3 era for essentially cracking the secrets to the SPEs. They didn’t just work on ND games; they travelled around to every Sony studio and even some second parties assisting programmers with the SPEs.
@Blaze215
Dude they’re working on multiple games. At the minimum two. The new Factions game and the unannounced Druckmann project (which I’m willing to bet money is TLOU Part III, but it could be a new IP) are known things at this point.
They didn’t spend two years on this remake as a studio. One team probably spent a year and half. 6 months spending time experimenting with the hardware to see what they can get out of it while porting TLOU 2 engine natively to PS5. Then a year or so spent reworking assets (and chances are a lot of assets from TLOU 2 itself were incorporated to save on time; I’m pretty sure Joel’s model is just a slight deaging of his TLOU2 model) and incorporating gameplay changes.
From what Digital Foundry saw, the geometry on scenes and environments haven’t really changed at all. Just the textures have been swapped and drastically improved. Which makes sense. In a situation like this you reuse the things gamers may not notice.
The main problem here is releasing a 9year old game for a f****** 80€! This is beyond ridiculous. And the people that support this greed and fans milking it's even more atrocious!.. 40€ at the best would be a fair price! Moreover, this is just a remaster - texture update and gameplay improvements, not a remake like we see on Resident Evil.
Unfortunately while we will have people supporting this - we will continue to see much more of this disgusting practices from Sony!
In some angles Tess looks like Harry Potter's aunt Petunia. Or is that just me 😂😂😂
@Fatewalker
Yeah that’s my only problem with it. The price.
I think 50 would have been the right call. 40 would be nice but considering the price hike on PS5 games that was never going to happen.
Sony released a number of budget games on PS4 for 40. So 50 would be the natural evolution.
But 70 is going too far.
@PlayStationGamer3919
The original release was highly stylized. Totally different art style that fit the engine they were using at the time and the PS3’s hardware limitations.
Best example is the lighting engine. The PS3 game used very unrealistic light maps for its scenes. Which fit what they were going for with the overall look and the PS3’s limitations. The PS4 version changed the light maps a bit for more realism, but it wasn’t completely redone from scratch. So it kept its almost “animated classic western” stylized look.
By comparison, TLOU2 went for an ultra realistic presentation and the engine for that game was built specifically for that style. Considering TLOUR is in that same engine, it only makes sense they’d carry over that art style. It also allowed them to use TLOU2 assets to save on development time since it wouldn’t noticeably clash.
Like the grass and moss in the trailer. That’s the exact same asset from TLOU2. A huge amount of work was cut out from reusing that asset rather than rebuilding it from scratch.
@OrtadragoonX
Honestly even 40€ is already pushing a lot! Again this is a 9year old game with a texture/character models update and gameplay improvements. Nothing is new, nothing reimagined, still the same f***** game!
I think Tess looks much more authentic and her age. I suppose those who complain about her looks are the same ones who said Aloy isn't attractive enough in HFW.
As for the moaners on here: just don't buy it! Really, you can stick to the Remastered or even the original on PS3. I for one am happy that Naughty Dog don't give a damn about your moaning now and didn't when you were hating on TLoU2. This actually gives me hope for Part 3 to be equally memorable and challenging in the plot department as Part 2.
@Fatewalker
I mean this isn’t unprecedented.
Nintendo charged something like 60 bucks back in the 1994 for Super Mario All Stars on SNES. Accounting for inflation that’s well over a hundred bucks today.
So it could always be worse.
@gollumb82
Who said Aloy isn’t attractive cause me and them are gonna be fighting.
Aloy is crazy gorgeous.
@OrtadragoonX
Yup, some guys were saying she was made to look ugly just to appease the video game critics. Those who claim female characters in games are made unrealistically attractive to please the male gamers.
For a game I have completed and purchased twice, I was really against outlaying £60/70 again for it. However, more I see of it the more I''m veering towards purchasing again.
Damn you Sony.
@gollumb82
But that’s the thing that’s weird to me. Aloy isn’t ugly. She’s realistic. She has imperfections, something everyone has whether male or female.
In general I don’t see too many unattractive female characters in gaming. It’s just that western developers aren’t over sexualizing them nearly as much as in the past. Which is fine and honestly makes more sense in the context of the stories they are in as characters.
By comparison, the way Japanese developers showcase women makes no sense most of the time, even if it is entertaining for the lizard brain.
@OrtadragoonX
Agree 100%. Thinking back to some games like Sin and its main villain (Elexis Sinclaire) still makes me cringe to this day. It's great that it's mostly a thing of the past.
@naruball oh no, I know it's for extras like gameplay, I get that. But I would be nice for a little extra content.
@Scoobijohn because this was developed by an outside crew so there wasn't any time spent by the home team
Peter parkers supposed to be in his 20's in spider man but he looks 15 lol
@PlayStationGamer3919
Matches her actual age. In the game she’s in her mid 40s living in a post apocalypse.
The original model design looks like a woman in her late 20s early 30s living in the present times with our current amenities. The newer model is more accurate to what someone of that age would actually look like in a world ending situation.
People would age faster because they would pushing their bodies harder. There would be a total absence of sun screen. There would be times of malnourishment for everyone. People would basically look terrible because they would be returning to a much harsher lifestyle.
@Would_you_kindly
And the original model he looked like he was 35.
Let’s face the facts on Spider-Man. Neither face was accurate to someone of Peter’s age.
Sorry to those of you who are stuck on being salty about the "cash grab." I've played both games numerous times and I'm excited to revisit Part 1 in an updated style.
It's impossible to make everyone happy but I imagine this remake is about to win some major awards next year, whether any of us spend our hard-earned $70/£70 on it right at launch or not.
I appreciate that they incorporated more of the original actress's facial features. Similar to how they updated Ellie's look for Part II (and now for the remake) to incorporate more of Ashley Johnson's features.
Poor Tess. She was beautiful and fierce. She looks so old and tired now.
@thefourfoldroot1 yeah, I just did the same as well. What the hell is that guy talking about or is he just blind?
@JJ2 Are ‘beautiful and fierce’ incompatible traits with ‘old and tired’? Are old people never beautiful? Are beautiful people never tired?
@kyleforrester87 £34.99 and I'm in! Can't wait to play this remake. Also can't believe how critical people are about it. Don't like it, don't play it. I've played through LOU about 4 times and went back to it after LOU2 and struggled with the gameplay mechanics. This is exactly what I'm after
@trev666
Indeed.
So far I’m comforted in my fear that they want to deconstruct the original story and characters.
I hope I’m wrong but just a few minor changes gives it a different tone.
Yup...that sure is Tess from The Last of Us...cool?
@mariomaster96 maybe PlayStation is less egoistic than you and thinks about gamers that are not as old as you are and/or new to this platform and they want those gamers to experience one of the best games ever made. And who is the guy behind you holding you at gunpoint and forces you to buy this remake?
If PlayStation had a 2000 billion dollar company behind them I could maybe understand this wining about the price. But PlayStation is not a charity organization and I for my part will buy the game at full price, since I know it will help PlayStation to keep producing triple A games. If that’s not important for you guys just switch to game pass it is cheap. Ok you have to live without real triple A games, but since cheap is what you are looking for you will feel right at home.
If you don’t like the price, you don’t have to buy it. It’s not actually milking if people are willing to keep buying it. This is a very wise business move because this is for all of the new fans they will make from the tv show. This will sell tons just like The Witcher 3 did. With all of that money, PlayStation can keep investing in new IP.
@BadPlayerOne What a funny overreaction lol
Also TLOU is already playable on the PS5, actually it's even "free" for every PS5 owner who has PS+. So pls don't act like Sony is so nice to make this game available on PS5 when it's already available on PS5 lol
@UltimateOtaku91 "Lol let's see the haters try and say there's no difference"
Of course there's a difference, who's saying otherwise 😑 You very well know the problem is the beyond ridiculous and insulting price point with less game (I'll keep hammering in the no MP included).
@mariomaster96 and now you can enjoy it as a new gamer with next gen graphics and next gen features. Be happy for players new to PlayStation and players that want to enjoy the game again. And yes I think it is very nice of them. But don’t feel forced to buy it. Just enjoy the older versions. Don’t worry about it.
Not buying it again but I don't see what's wrong with the new model. She looks fine.
They need to put a playable demo out like they did with the PS3 version of The Last of Us. It would give us a chance to check out some of the enhancements.
@mariomaster96 People with Pokemon avatars should never complain about another company milking their fan base. Just saying.
@NintenGuy Man what an amazing argument. "You like Pokemon therefore your opinion is invalid"
Bet discussions with you are fun
@mariomaster96 Just pointing out the hypocrisy in your post.
@Scoobijohn third time? Umm sweetie this is a full remake not a remaster and they are working on game's you just think they working on only the last of us remake? Wake up
@pumpkin_head ok so don't buy it
@Zombiechris
Correct. I won't be paying £70. Voting with my feet, money where my mouth is. Etc etc.
I can't see how anyone can arrive at the conclusion that full price is a good price, but each to their own, subjectivity and all that.
@pumpkin_head did you forget when Sony said ps5 game's will be $70 dollar's?
