Well, many of you will have seen this a couple of hours ago when it leaked, but – surprise! Here’s your first look at The Last of Us: Part I, which is launching on 2nd September for PS5. The game’s been redeveloped from the ground-up for Sony’s new-gen console, and there’s no doubt that the environmental art and character models have taken an enormous stride forward. The PS3 original and its PS4 remaster were already lookers, of course, but there are clear improvements here.
It’s worth mentioning that, while it’s barely shown in the trailer, the gameplay is also getting reshaped for this re-release: “Enjoy a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernised gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options,” the official blurb from Sony reveals. “Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat.”
In truth, we’re looking at the intersection between a remake and a remaster here. Obviously, all of the original motion capture and voice acting is being used, but the models and environments have been completely rebuilt. We’re looking forward to seeing extended gameplay, because the gunplay in The Last of Us: Part II is some of the best around – and it sounds like that’s what’s being leveraged here.

It looks very cool.
I don't think I got the plat last time around. Might as well go for it this time.
I remember playing it on the hardest setting and saving all of my molotovs for this one particular location. Such intense encounters.
Very excited to go back to this on PS5.
I'm sorry and I only speak for myself but I didn't buy a brand new $500 console to play the second remake/remaster/rerelease of a PS3 game, AND it's $70. Unless you love live services, this "new" generation is already turning out to be a whiff
I'm totally fine with it playing like Part 2. The gameplay there was great. Sign me up for this.
I can't get excited for this. I'm sure many people will be thrilled here but this just seems like a waste to me.
The fact it is being built from the ground up and incorporating all new AI and animations is really impressive. Everything looks night and day compared to the original
I don’t really see why this needs to exist. The original still plays and looks fine and the remaster is already playable on PS5.
@JSnow2 so don't buy it, they are obviously doing this to capitalize off of the TV show. There is potential for a whole new market of players here.
The first game came out 9 years ago, and the remaster came out 8 years ago. Lots of kids grew up in that time and could be looking to play this for the first time.
There are also going to be many people who just got their first console and watch the show and want to try it out.
Just because YOU don't want something doesn't mean others can't have it.
The new MP sounds intriguing.
The still from the show looked good, especially Joel.
Yeah, you can 100% see the improvement in the graphics BUT I'm still not sold on the remake, at least certainly not as a Day One purchase. Damn my replaying 1 & 2 last year, should've waited!
🤦
Hmm .. maybe I'm going blind or something but I don't necessarily see any differences from that PS4 remaster . Regardless I will be picking this up ☺️
Struggled to see why i needed this but, as its built from the ground up using the combat systems from 2, im gonna find it hard not to put the money down as i love these games.
We don't need this and it fits Sony's current model of milking everything and taking advantage of gamers.
Because I can't help it I have to get it, playing that game with that engine with updated gameplay from 2 is just too tempting.
Surely this is something that should definitely be on PS Plus Extra. It’s a first party but an old game and PS5 only. Sounds like it’s expensive in order to be free on the service and entice people to subscribe.
But in short, if it’s not on there, I’m not paying for that.
What....an absolute....joke 😑
While I really don’t think it needed a Remake/Remaster, I’m also a sucker and will probably get it as it’s an opportunity to play a better version of one of my all time favourite games. The same goes for Resident Evil 4 next year
I'm beyond thrilled for this. My only question now is pricing.
Yeah Fashions 2 is way more exciting than this. I’m sorry guys if Sony studios live service games are rich story driven experiences. I’m 100% down for sony live service future a long side they’re already establish single player games of course.
@JSnow2
Totally agree what looked like a good gaming year 2022.
Is turning out to be the year of delays to 2023 and another remaster/remake year.
And another cash grab year.
This is for all consoles I’m talking about.
Last ditch hope is GOW2 this year or something from Xbox Sunday and surprise from Nintendo.
When can I pre-order? Clear visual enhancements, add the gunplay and AI from TLoU2 and it's going to be amazing.
Was hoping for something better than Last of Us 2 at a technical level given the additional time with PS5 hardware, but seems more or less the same. Of course I will play it but don't know if day one. Depends on price. Maybe those that paid full price for the original can have a little discount? 🤣
Can’t wait to go through Grounded mode again for the remake. Desperation and tense encounters await.
@B_Lindz $70 Sony leaked the price earlier today
You know the the most important question people will have is will have new trophies 😄
The balls it takes to charge $70 for this are beyond imagination, it doesn't even look that much better then the already great PS4 version... speaking of that why isn't there a PS4 version?
If they say it requires the full power of the PS5 then they really take us for giant suckers! "well it requires the dualsense features" oh yeah is that why in a few months the people on PC will be playing it with their favorite Xbox controller?
@DeepSpace5D was thinking the same. Grounded or nothing.
I'm interested, but not for $70. I already bought the original game and the remaster. $70 for the remastered remaster is a bit steep.
I would love to see ND doing some raytracing GI but seems it's not (and probably never will be) the case...
I never touched the first game. I guess even though I see this remake as somewhat pointless, it was made for me. I'm going to buy this.
There’s a $70, $80 and $100 version lmfao… on sale today at 4pm
If only they can remake the story for part 2.
In my opinion they missed what made the game so great in part 1. In the second game I struggle to care about most of the characters and even Elle becomes unlikeably monotone by the end.
The dynamic between Elle and Joel was what made the first game as good as it was. The graphics, intensity and story telling was only emboldened by your hope that both of them will get through the challenges they faced.
This remake isn't exactly necessary but hopefully people will remember why part 2 just doesn't measure up to the part 1 classic.
This is such a pointless cash grab. Why is this even a thing? The last of us part 1 is turning into skyrim lol
This is hardly a remake. It looks like it's the same game! They may be rebuilding it in a new engine, but it's just The Last of Us take 3. I can't know how much work this took, but I can say it would definitely have been better spent on something new.
Did anyone else see the post that The Last of us 2 has sold over 10 million copies worldwide? Impressive stuff!
I actually like tlou 1 gameplay more than tlou 2, the first one is like proper horror game while the second one is like action game.
Looks the same to me 🤷♂️
Siding with sceptics here. True, there are many players who have not experienced it yet - but PS4 remaster is at their disposal. I would understand it if there was no backwards compatibility, as in PS3/4, but not at the current generation. GoW PS5 remaster when, anyone?
Can't wait to play this in a year or two when it comes to PS Plus Extra.
Ooooooft. I love the game but this looks like barely an upgrade from the 60fps PS4 version, let alone a full £70 game. Only way I'd excuse it is if there's a £10 or so upgrade path for existing owners.
I’m in the “definitely doesn’t need a remake” crowd, but I think I’ll play this once I get a PS5 and play all the games I want to play first.
To be fair the side by side shots really showed a lot had changed. At the same time still feel it’s unnecessary.
They have to really show us why we should buy this again. At the moment it’s a NO.
@JSnow2 What about GameBoy, Nes and Snes games? ( https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/06/bill-and-teds-excellent-retro-collection-for-ps5-ps4-is-totally-bogus

Garbage lol.
Honestly, the remaster looked great and this remake looks just like the second game, which was a PS4 tittle.
Nothing in this trailer screams next-gen.
The only way this remake could be justified was if it had amazing visuals that far surpassed what we already had on PS4.
£70 is an absurd asking price for this when it has less content than the PS4 remaster. It should be the same price as Part II was on launch - £50.
I'm very curious to see how fast it comes to PC and at what price it will release because I'm betting it won't be £70. The way it was showcased indicated it'll come to PC very soon i.e. a few months after PS5. Because when the superior version comes to PC and is cheaper than the PS5 version, it's a complete wrap for PS5. Jim Ryan is just gouging his core customers at this point and feeding them scraps while treating the PC players like royalty.
@Rooty1985 That's a shame. I'm hoping that there's an upgrade path like what they did with Uncharted 4 & Lost Legacy.
I'm actually happy it's more of a hybrid than a full fledged remake. There was no need to "reboot" the series, but this will be a definite buy for me now.
I wanted to love the original as much as most people, but I couldn't as I found the gameplay to fall short of the great story and characters. It also wasn't balanced very well, with the Clickers being way too powerful. Then it was the opposite with Part II, where it was a technical masterpiece, but I hated what they did with the story in the second half. In the end, this is basically the best of both games, and should be ridiculously good and will now be the game the critics said the first game was.
@JSnow2 you have no one to blame but your self. every one ran out to buy these brand new consoles , and now you complain? no offense why did you buy it then? there will be plenty of games still to be announced , but why would you buy a console you aren't even happy with atm?
@DrClayman barely an upgrade? you realize they added the last of us 2 game play to the first game right?
@twitchtvpat 🤷♂️ dunno mate, I see that side by side with the original and can't see much changed. Put RE2 remake side by side with the original and see what that looks like. And even that was £45, not £70.
The negativity in the gaming community is so obnoxious. Some people haven't played the original and now they have a chance at the best possible way. The only issue I see is the price and that it should be cheaper.
@PoopScoop The original remaster has been available for like 8 years. Is only £16 normally, goes down to £8 regularly, and has been free on PSN+. And is still available on both the PS4 and PS5.
This isn't a "some people haven't played the original and now they have a chance to" issue. If those people haven't played the original with all the chances they have had, they either have zero interest or have a stupidly superficial view on games.
This isn’t a remake imo
I don't need this pointless cash grab remake in the same way I don't need a pointless cash grab double quarter pounder with cheese meal.
Can. Not. Wait.
@JSnow2 join that with the fact that the game is also coming to PC 😅
Am I the only one who thought Part 2 was going to get a native PS5 port and would be packaged with this Part 1 remake as a collection?
Watched the trailer... wasn't impressed. It was crisper and clearer but there's zero reason to care about this. I already have the PS4 remaster of the PS3 game. I bought it cause I got it half off after owning and beating the PS3 version. It was a well written story and a very polished game but it was so dark that it actually turned me off of the entire survival horror genre. I still haven't played the sequel and more than likely won't. I definitely won't be buying this Remastered x2 version.
Well, it certainly ain't for nothing, from what I gather it's about £70. You know what, I think I've had my fill of The Last of Us.
Called it- using all the original mo cap and voice acting will have kept costs down. This is essentially a port into the new (TLOU2) engine. The trailer doesn't show it but it sounds like they may have redesigned the actual levels to take advantage (and that could be a big boost to the game- combat in TLOU2 was much improved, especially against humans).
Is this remake "necessary"? No, the PS4 remaster still plays great, but from Naughty Dogs' perspective this is relatively cheap to do and helps them get to grips with new hardware (they were open previously about using the PS4 remaster as practice developing for the PS4).
@Uncharted2007 I'll be interested to see gameplay. The sequel improved combat a lot, and the engine allows more interesting level design and better AI. That could be the big draw of this remake. The cut scenes already looked great so only have so much scope to improve.
@jrt87 an excellent point. I really struggled to comprehend media like IGN who gave part 2 a 10/10. Even if you look past its narrative flaws (and there are a few) you end up with a game that takes too long to complete with characters that you will never root for.
I cared more for Tess in the first few chapters of part 1 then I did for anyone in part 2. The game tries to get you to feel conflicted about about the characters but they fail and you end up disliking them all. And by the last few chapters I actually found myself asking 'when is this going to end?'.
The game looks great and facial animation is second to none but giving the game 10/10 is more than it deserves and the metacritic user score speaks for itself.
@DrClayman they did more then just vissuals , im just saying you should hold off judgement till you see what they actually changed instead of trying to base everything off of one trailer.
I still can't believe Hermen sat up there and had this studio waste their time on this. Like seriously. Most unnecessary move ever. And that's before you even get to the price. smh. No better than EA and Activision here. Next they're going to do God of War 2018 remake in 2024 or some crap.
@PoopScoop what's ridiculous is that anyone whom can take a step back and objectively examine side by side comparisons to conclude this is just a remaster of a remaster, and face being called negative by a blindly loyal no matter what individual. That's ridiculous.
This update, which is what it is, asking full price is just insulting!
Dont really see the difference between this and the PS4 remaster. Maybe better lightning and denser foliage?? But it really doesn't look like a remake like FF7 remake or Resident Evil 2 Remake. This looks more like a remaster. To make things worse they are selling it for $70!
Was it really build from the ground up? Guess we will find out. It looks more like they just ported the code to the new engine.but still looks good
@PoeticJustice
Exactly!
The characters being likeable and relatable was key. Also the enjoyable story making sense and calling for intelligent discussion.
I think any father could relate to Joel in the original.
Instead in part 2 I think they got presumptuous in wanting you to hate these characters and then reflect on your hatred in some mind bending teaching experience from what I gather. Then complain about gamers hate in denial (of what they what they were aiming for in the first place).
I remember when new games got released, and not just released, but released regularly.
Swedish prices:
Last of us Remake 849 sek (about 81 euro)
Last of us Remake Digital Deluxe 949 sek (91 euro)
F**k this Sony. Remake or not, this is a 10 year old game and I bought PS3 disc on release, PS4 Digital on release and no upgrade path?! Thanks Jim "Greedy" Ryan.
I don't know why Scandinavia and many european countries should pay at least 10 euro more for already overpriced games?
And Sony can't blame taxes because EU has the same taxes on stuff like this...
I miss the 649 sek/749 sek prices from PS4era and Shawn Layden who actually made PS Studios release games in a timely fashion.
Now it's just greed and guessinggames all the time.
On the PS4 / Pro I bought all Sony 1st studio games on day one. Now I only buy Insomniacs games. Was pumped for GoW: Ragnarök but the price on this remake really makes me reconsider Sony day 1 ever again to be honest. Good job Ryan alienating your most loyal customers.
But they aim for PC market anyway and "I have been there - done that" so this might be my last PS console anyway.
Guess I clear my backlog and find myself another hobby.
@BartoxTharglod Yeah, they can shove this cash grab. Shameless stuff.
When they started showing it I honestly thought it was the original game and it was going to transition into the new one. That was what the original game looked like in my memories.
So just like George Lucas later rebranded “Star Wars” to “Star Wars - A New Hope”, this game is now going to be called “TLOU - Part 1”, instead of just “TLOU” 🙄
@Grimwood Objectively, it's not.
TLOU 1 is rated better
https://www.metacritic.com/search/game/the%20last%20of%20us%20/results?sort=score
TLOU 2 isn't even in the top 100.
https://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/score/metascore/all/all/filtered
You are free to subjectively call it the best game ever made however.
I would happily upgrade my physical copy of the first game to this for $10 (like some other games upgrades to PS5 versions are proposed).
I think most of us here aren't really the right audience for this. Just a small minority fans that want to play it at it's best and new players.
The PS4 remaster is fine for most of us. Nothing wrong with that game and if anyone doesn't have it yet, now is a good time to get it unless you want this better version. I get the feeling that Sony could end up delisting this game from the store and perhaps stop printing them if they haven't done so already. So anyone wanting it later down the road will have to settle for the expensive newer version.
The TV series will surely give this remake a nice boost in sales too so that's money rolling in for Sony. Just a shame they couldn't give us current fans an upgrade fee. Too pricey for me to buy it for a third time but maybe someday when it's cheaper and possibly bundled with the standalone multiplayer. The higher price and lack of multiplayer is a kick in the teeth but then again if they added the multiplayer to this one, it would be a distraction to the stand-alone game.
Trailer looked alright, but not enough to make me spend $70 lol.
Unless they offer a paid upgrade path for owners of the PS4 version, I shall be waiting for it to drop down to $30 New in a few years.
Only other reason I'd be tempted to buy this sooner is if they added in new story cutscenes and/or new levels (missions).
Maybe spend $10-20 on it once the price plummets, absolutely unjustified imo though, the remaster and even just the OG game itself are still terrific
@Grimwood I completely disagree, TLOU 2 felt like such a slog to go through, I can't say there's any specific thing I dislike otherwise but somehow there's just too much of it...and I love long games, just marathoned through ToCS 1-3 and starting 4 but it just didn't work for this game
WOW Another Remake!! Might as well Milk it while you can. That TV show is coming
