Okay, first things first, Trails to Azure is the sequel to Trails from Zero, which is actually yet to release here in the West (it's locked in for September 2022). But that hasn't stopped publisher NIS America from kickstarting Azure's marketing campaign. It's been given a character trailer — embedded above — and it's now up for pre-order.
NIS America also confirms that Trails to Azure is targeting an "early 2023" release window. Previously, we just had a vague "2023" to go on. This could mean that there'll only be several months between the launch of Trails from Zero and the release of Trails to Azure. Hopefully that ends up being the case, since the latter is a direct continuation of the story.

This game was a blast when I played it with the Geofront translation patch. Easily my favorite battle system in the series.
I will be keeping my eyes open for Reverie news though. I want THAT special edition fo sho
I’m only a couple of chapters into it but it’s been really good so far. Really wish it worked with Moonlight on Vita though, it crashes whenever I try to stream it from my laptop. I played all the others on Vita so it’s a bit rubbish. Ah well, at least I snapped it up in time.
Also, don’t watch that trailer if you haven’t played Zero, it somewhat gives away certain characters’ arcs throughout that game.
Okay, so let me make sure I've got this right. In original release order, it goes Zero > Azure > Cold Steel 1-4 > Reverie? So that's the order to play them in? I've got Cold Steel 1-4 in the backlog, but I'm as well waiting to get the other 3 and play them in order, right?
If they keep with the plan to release the other two Trails games next year they probably need to get this one out pretty early in the year. Three Trails games in one year sounds absolutely insane but here's hoping they pull it off!
@RainbowGazelle
Yeah you got it right! Though there is also the Sky trilogy that comes before Zero. Not sure if you already knew about those or not.
10000% day 1. Even though I won't play it for ages.
Played cold steel 1 & 2,should I hold off with the steel series and do these or can I play them between each other?
Can't wait to get my hands on my copy. This is where I'm starting the series, it should be ok? Once I manage to get a steam deck I'll play the sky trilogy there if they don't come to PS, but I'm starting this as soon as it comes
@Judal27 If you start with Zero it should be good. While the Sky games do have some nice lead up and are fantastic, Zero and Azure tie in way closer to the story of Cold Steel.
@cjay_001 oooh this is azure lol. I didn't even read the title of the article 😅. But glad to hear it's a good spot. I meant to start with zero yea
Id love to go in knowing all the references to the sky games but I'm not sure when I'd even get to them
@Korgon How important is the sky trilogy? It isn't available on modern consoles and I have no access to older ones and I prefer consoles over my pc nowadays
@Lavalera
I'd say at least Sky 1 and 2 are just as important as any of the Cold Steel games. 3 I can't really comment on since I'm still working my way through it.
It is a shame they aren't readily available on current consoles but if I remember correctly the PSP versions of 1 and 2 are in the PS+ lineups over in Japan so you might be able to play them that way if they are added.
@Korgon thanks m8. Lets hope they will be on our side as well. Guess we'll see when it launches in the US on Monday think it will be around the same as we get in Europe. Otherwise I'll just cave in and buy them on steam.
@RainbowGazelle Yes and no. The original release order yes, but the timeline itself does not follow that order. The Sky series kicks off everything, then the rest of the games overlap with each other on the timeline. Zero starts 2 months before Cold Steel, then overlaps with it. Azure starts around Chapter 5 of CS through to Chapter 2 of CS 2. Akatsuki no Kiseki completely overlaps with Azure. Doing a search for the timeline will show a chart of how the games overlap.
Just started Trails of Cold Steel 4, the biggest problem is at this point that entire branch of the storyline is basically spoiled completely, along with trails in the sky right at the beginning of 4
@RainbowGazelle I think it's safe to play Cold Steel 1-2 while you wait for Zero to come out
I might actually just do that.
Wow, if you live in Canada and want to preorder those special editions from NISA Store, it costs a crapload of money
@Korgon @SilentS @throwmeaname Thanks for the explanations, guys! Really helpful!
This series is confusing but always love the trailers! I'll get around to playing one of these days...
