Buying an original copy of Turrican director Manfred Trenz’s Rendering Ranger: R2 on the Super Famicom will set you back just shy of $4,000, so you might want to settle for this PS5 and PS4 port instead. The game, originally published by Virgin Interactive only in Japan, is getting a re-release on modern consoles after Ziggurat acquired the rights to the title earlier this year.
The brutal action game blends side-scrolling on-foot sequences with spaceship shootouts – but its rarity is the real selling-point here. Apparently, only 10,000 copies of the original were manufactured, making it one of the rarest Super Famicom games ever released. It’s this cultural interest that makes it such a fascinating port – of course, without a hint of irony, Limited Run Games will print a limited number of physical copies for the PS5 and PS4, with pre-orders set to open on 5th August, 2022.

I seriously had to double check the address bar to make sure this wasn't NL. Suddenly all the headlines are GBC, NES, Super Famicom 😂
@NEStalgia yeah no kidding, 4 articles in a row. That’s pretty cool actually. 😁
Lol Famicom, used to hear about this when I was a kid. I got the Sega Mega Drive II though, with 3 in 1 cartridge - Super Hang-On, Columns and World Cup Italia '90 or Altered Beast or something but damn Streets of Rage and Golden Axe killed everything!
@get2sammyb The dev who did Turrican is Manfred Trenz, not Benz 😂
Anyway, while I was a huge Turrican fan, I never played this. Could be interesting if there’s more to this than just the nostalgia.
@Excess @get2sammyb yep, beat me to it,but definitely Manfred Trenz! He actually programmed & did the gfx for original C64 Turrican,(& I think a NES port later),& C64 Turrican 2....the music obviously was done by others...also contributed to the superb Amiga Turrican,(less so the sequel),which were handled by the multi-talented Factor 5.👍
From what I'd seen online due creative differences (between them & Rainbow Arts who held most of the publishing rights),this was a Turrican style game in spirit but couldn't use the Turrican branding. Think he tried to oversee a 3d Turrican game with THQ (Not sure, but think that was separate from a Factor 5 effort too),both sadly never coming to fruition.
Oh well,an interesting retro find none the less!
@Robocod @Excess Whoops! Dunno where Benz came from! 😅
Thanks!
Turrican and Turrican 2 on the C64 & Amiga blew my mind at the time. Along with Shinobi on the SMS, Speedball 2, R-type, Dizzy and others that propelled me from someone that liked games into a lifelong fan. So many good memories.
@get2sammyb Also came across in my twitter feed two more LRG announced games,(but also getting digital release),on PS4/5...
Deathwish Enforcers giving off an 80's Sunset Riders vibe mixed with tongue in cheek Clint Eastwood/ Charles Bronson references!👍

Also WayForward publishing one of their former artist's Flashback style platformer Lunark (coming to all major formats).

This is one I'd hoped would get a digital release due to it's rarity. Would have been a nice bonus on the Turrican collection.
