The Last of Us 2’s mulitplayer mode has evolved into what will almost certainly be one of Sony’s live service games. The title – which clearly expands far beyond the SOCOM-style deathmatch encounters of the original – is described as an “extremely ambitious undertaking” on the PS Blog. In fact, developer Naughty Dog has been growing to support the project. Co-president Neil Druckmann confirmed during Summer Game Fest that the first-party studio is working on more simultaneous titles than ever before.
The standalone multiplayer game – which doesn’t have a name yet – is “much larger than a mode”. Senior manager of communications Rochelle Snyder expanded: “We’re growing our studio significantly to ensure we build this full-scale, standalone game, with its massive scope and immense world, in a way that fans have come to expect from The Last of Us and Naughty Dog.” A single piece of concept art appears to confirm that the action will take place in San Francisco, as the iconic Golden Gate Bridge can be spotted in the background.
The wording seems to imply that you’ll be able to explore a large chunk of the city, suggesting this will be an open world-style experience, as opposed to segmented maps. Some have spotted a cloud of dust in the concept art, which could either be a sandstorm or potentially some kind of spores. Obviously this would fit the Battle Royale model, as you could have said cloud closing in on players as rounds progress.
Others think that this may be an Escape from Tarkov-type experience, where you need to work together in a shared world to reach an extraction point – or it could even be like RUST, where you have to scavenge for supplies, build camps, and survive in hostile environments. Whatever the case, there’ll be a storyline, as director Vinit Agarwal has described the game as a “cinematic experience between players” before.
Speaking on a livestream yesterday, industry know-it-all Jeff Grubb mentioned that Naughty Dog is taking the time to build a ton of systems that will help with future expansion into the game. He alluded that the map may be modular, meaning parts of it could potentially be swapped in and out as seasons change to keep the action fresh. This is something we see in Fortnite regularly, where the island constantly evolves to introduce new areas and points of interest. It’s likely Bungie will be consulted on the project as soon as PlayStation’s acquisition closes.
Druckmann didn’t elaborate much on the gameplay loop at Summer Game Fest, but he did say the project is as “big as any of our single player games”. He said: “The game’s got a story and the way we’re telling that story is very unique. It’s got a brand new cast of characters. It’s very cool. You’re going to see a lot more of this game come next year.”
The wait goes on.

At this point, I'm expecting something along the lines of Ubisoft's The Division, only better (hopefully). If I see something I like out of gameplay vids for this, it might make me resubscribe to Plus.
this sounds really good & if by cinematic they mean immersive then hell yeah . if they’re talking about cutscenes then hell no , i hope they leave that in single player . i can only imagine how many people skip the apex legends and COD Warzone cutscenes
mmm going to the PS BLOG and reading the platform menu "PS5", "PS4", "PSVR" ... I started thinking on a TLOU PSVR2 experience...
@SolaceCreed yeah, it would be awesome to have something like The Division but in the setting of the Last of Us series with all the Naughty Dogs' magic. To be honest, I don't like the emphasis on PVP content. After a day at work investing lots of time and nerves in fighting other people is the last thing I wish for. But exploring a dangerous world full of different hostile creatures, perhaps with a friend or two would be nice.
It would be pretty funny if it turned out to be a battle royale game after all this.
Everything in that wording screams MMO to me. Can't tell if it's a good or a bad idea, I guess we'll see. But considering how long it's taking and them saying it's their biggest game to date, can't see it being anything else.
@SolaceCreed I was thinking the same to be honest. The division on steroids
Basically nothing, we did get a pretty picture though
I hope no one thinks this is going to be free. This is going to be a full-priced standalone game. And I KNOW folks who bought TLOU2 are going to flip out thinking they should get it free when it is no longer a mode but a huge new game itself.
@Boucho11 @Tomato_Goose
Yeah, I'd be in to it if it was more like 4 vs 4 vs Infected even.
Tlou mp vs the day after? Seems similar sounding, at least.
I know I'm in the minority but I'd like it to be similar to dayz as in you need to survive food, drink, weapons ect and the part between players is finding radios ect helping each other survive and there another team where there only objective is to find and kill you and there already stacked on guns, ammo ect.
@Ssimsim damn that’s a good idea! i love PvP games like that . it’s like left 4 dead 2 in a way where one team plays as survivors and the other team is full of killers .
I've put thousands of hours into factions and if I'm not getting the good ol' 4v4 in balanced and classic maps like the original then I would be very sad.
This does seem really great and ND will deliver...
But there's nothing that's s good as factions. No stealth/ tactical/ brutal multiplayer game that has gameplay that is this polished. Which is insane since it's a decade old. This industry is incompetent and mediocre most of the time. Mostly because of decision making at the top
I’m getting the feeling there is going to be two main modes for this game.
A PVP component similar to a Battle Royal game.
A PVE component similar to the Division.
And perhaps a third mode where they combine the two. Teams of survivors having to fight both other players and the infected while progressing through objectives.
That would satisfy all possible players. I’d love to see my idea for a third mode implemented. I feel like ND has the chops to actually make that type of gameplay balanced. Perhaps they could even incorporate informal alliance systems when being swarmed by the infected between teams. But once that is settled teams could turn on their informal Allies or continue to travel together.
Back in the day I was obsessed with a game called DEFCON. It was a RTS where the goal was the score the highest for your region in an all out nuclear war.
What made it brilliant was that you only release your nuclear weapons once the counter reached DEFCON 1. Before that in each stage you were given time to build units, get your plan together, and most importantly negotiate back door alliances. And you could turn on your allies and stab them in the back once the nukes started flying.
It was a complex game but it rewarded skillful negotiation between players and added a Poker element to the game. You could ally with someone so you could use each other’s radar and sonar systems (making finding submarines and bomber bases much easier). But if you were good you would get your ally to believe you weren’t going to turn on them.
There were times when I would ally with someone and use their resources and in the background I’d be private chatting with another opponent. When DEFCON 1 hit I would unilaterally end my alliance with one player and swap to another player and we would nuke my former ally together. But I always kept some ICBMs in reserve to hit that new ally with the second all other ICBMs, bombers, and SLBMS with.
There’s never been a game like that since then. And I think the Last of Us is perfect to bring that aspect back since it fits the atmosphere and story of TLOU.
I just hope it isn’t a forced coop only experience.
Competitive or battle royal would be cool for me.
It’s beginning to sound like it will be nothing like the first one. Which sucks, because it was fantastic.
Live service = enthusiasm destroyed.
i wouldn't mind a br type mode if its like team based where you have large groups of a faction and fight other factions while you have to literally kill each other while trying to avoid or kill infected.
Definitely got me more interested than I was before this little update.
