Red Dead Online isn’t dead – but it is. Fans of the sandbox Western were planning a funeral for the game next week, and it looks like that will go ahead, because an update from developer Rockstar doesn’t instil much confidence in the mulitplayer mode’s future. Effectively it admits that, as its attention is turning to GTA 6, it won’t be releasing any more major updates for the game.
“Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements – plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment – we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years,” a spokesperson said.
It’ll continue to promote modes, missions, and content through monthly updates – but don’t expect any new Roles or story content to be added. In essence, it’s not quite pulling the plug on the multiplayer mode entirely, but it’s certainly flipping the switch. It’s a shame as this mode always harboured enormous potential, but it’s a reminder of just how difficult it is to support multiple service games.

So much potential unrealised — a real bummer!
With all those compromises and mistakes Rockstar is making I sure hope that GTAVI will be the Game of the decade
What a shame. Such awful post-launch support for a AAA game - let alone a sequel whose original game had AMAZING DLC. What has happened to Rockstar? They are a shell of their former selves.
@MFTWrecks GTA5 Online happened . i’m ***** sick of that game . it aggravates me anytime i see the game’s cover anywhere .
This just makes me 😡 Rockstar have created this beautiful, vast open world western and are just letting it go to waste.
Considering they've probably made more money than the Beatles, not having staff to work on Red Dead is a poor show. I always felt their efforts were half hearted with the online mode, and yes I too also got fed up with GTA5 several years back. Not having Liars Dice in RDR 2 was a shame as well.
I've had over 100 hours of enjoyment out of the singleplayer, so I can't complain. I would've loved some dlc ala Undead Nightmare but I've more than had my worth out of the 60 bucks that I paid for it.
It's a crying shame because apart from a few newbie plebs now and again, the community is worlds apart from GTA Online's. It's refreshing to see other players wave or tip their hat to you as you pass them on the road or even put 3 star animal carcass' on your horse before bowing and trotting off. Love how chill everybody is.
I don’t know why Rockstar doesn’t just patch in mods for the players to create their own modes and stuff, it would be better than just completely abandoning the game and community.
I'm ok with that after being attacked by the KKK dress-ups while playing a black character automatically turned me off the game and I just went back to replay the story.
crazy how long gta 5 went and how much they milked that , and they couldn't do the same for this game.
This really is a shame. As other commenters have said it’s a beautiful world and fantastically realised and just seems to have gone to waste. Such a pleasant world as far as I can tell compared to GTAO. I’ll carry on posse-ing up with my son when he wants to but I’m a little jaded to Online anyway having put nearly 90 hours into single player which was incredible (even if moment to moment gameplay and missions still rather dated).
Probably no PS5 version of RDR2 then either.
Lol you lot aren’t spending enough money for them to take their eyes off potential GTAVI revenue.
@SplooshDmg Really? The 'story' in GTAV is nothing special to be brutally honest. I welcome new writers for the next one. Not to mention the story in RDRII, it's a big cliche at best.
@thechetearly
Just give us a 60fps patch at least and I'd be happy tbh..
@MFTWrecks Money happened.
Politics and money. Just the reason for not give attention to this great game.is only and always the fuc...i.g gta!!
Welll. That cames gta 6 wtf
@MightElf-69 honestly though, that’d be great.
