There have been female footballers on the cover of FIFA games before, specifically USWNT striker Alex Morgan on FIFA 16 in the United States. But never before has there been a female footballer on a global cover – until now. It’s been announced that Australian forward Sam Kerr will feature alongside French superstar Kylian Mbappé on the cover of FIFA 23’s Ultimate Edition worldwide.
This year’s soccer sim from EA Sports will be the last to feature FIFA branding, ending a 30-year alliance. It means that the publisher is eager to go out on a high, as it slowly turns its attention to the future under a new brand name: EA Sports FC. But with the FIFA Women’s World Cup scheduled to get underway next July, this year’s title will have a greater emphasis on the female game.
While Mbappé needs no introduction – the rapid forward recently turned down a move to Real Madrid in order to continue his career in Paris – Kerr currently plays for Chelsea’s ladies team, where she’s won three Women’s Super League titles to date. The cover of the Ultimate Edition itself has a kind of statue-esque, marble look to it – we reckon it’s quite classy, don’t you?

Chelsea and PSG on the cover of FIFA, enough to make any old head footy fans shiver 😉
Up The Chels 💙
Nice to see. The Women’s Euros has been brilliant so far, it’s even made me root for England seeing them play so well. Which is basically treason.

@Member_the_game not sure if serious
Not sure why this can’t be on the normal cover tbh.
Still a step in the right direction, but they could have easily done more.
It's about time too. The sooner the bigwigs in Football realise women are just as good as men on the field the better the football organisation will be. I'm chuffed to see the tides are turning ie equality for both sexes in the beautiful game. Great news!

I'm always happy to see my queens slaying!
This should be the norm for all sports games moving forward.
Why still Mbappe though?
It’s good to have a female player. But they should also give other male players the spotlight.
@jrt87 maybe it's to make more people aware of and open to women's kickball, so 30yrs from now comments like yours will be seen as unconscionable. shrug
What better way to do it than slap a picture on the front of one of cex's biggest traded in games each year.
There's some really good female players at these Euros but Sam Kerr is on another level. Great player.
I must say, I'm quite enjoying the women's Euros. Some teams are very good, others not so much but the lack of diving, rolling on the floor feigning injury and arguing with the refs is very refreshing.
@ApostateMage That’s a good point actually, barely seen any malicious fouls as it’s more accidental ones. Zero diving, strict professionalism from every player. Even when 8-0 down. Definitely refreshing.
@nessisonett @ApostateMage agreed.
I was one of those people that never gave any mind to women’s football until I saw the Euros.
It’s clear that the level of play isn’t as high as the top teams, but the competition itself is just as entertaining.
With more coverage they will get more revenue and investment and things can only improve with that. And it’s great that my daughter can watch football with me with female role models.
@DaveHero75
Putting aside the “just as good” comment for the moment, I think the reason is more to do with people not caring about women’s football than anything else. That is slowly changing, which is good, especially for an Arsenal fan like me who can finally have some success again!
@jrt87
Don’t feel bad. I’m the same way when it comes to the WNBA.
But I will say that with UFC, I’m more about the women fights than the men. Women tend to be far more graceful than men in mixed martial arts and it’s more fun to watch for me.
@Kienda I always try to think of it in terms of how long the infrastructure’s been in place. Like Celtic were formed in 1888, the game has grown massively over the years. Women’s football is still in its infancy as a competitive, professional industry with all that entails like sponsorships, TV packages etc. Not to mention all the teams that don’t have the funds to employ dieticians, physical therapists, chiropractors and all the many, many staff that men’s teams employ these days. It improves every day but it’ll take time just like the men’s game did.
@Kienda (And it’s great that my daughter can watch football with me with female role models.) You hit the nail right on the head with that comment. Everyone needs role models, whatever the game they play. And men and women should be equal a role model just as our uncles and aunties, brothers and sisters or mothers and father's are/were to us growing up. Role models is a important faction in sports as it it is many things today.
@thefourfoldroot1 You might as well say that about women's tennis dude. Tennis has a huge popularity in it's own right, especially mixed and women's tennis on a whole. Steffi Graf won 22 Major singles titles in all. That just shows how great a player she really was, and imo any woman in a game of football could be just as legendary today, going forward. Yeah the female side of football might not be as big as the men's side, but it's getting their, getting more popular every year, and that's great that it is, more variety in sports. Sports are a game of two sides ie men and women on a whole, and that's how it should be.
99% of everyone says 'who?' even the people banging on about 'its about time' anyway, the cover reminds me of that Arsenal kit
@DaveHero75 the difference is you absolutely don't have to be the biggest, strongest or quickest to be the best footballer, it definitely helps in plenty of areas but at the elite level it's mostly about technical ability, maybe we'll see that in the future in women's football, at the moment the pool of players and level of training isn't quite there
@Victor_Meldrew I agree, you don't have to be some super strong/quickest person etc... to be acknowledged as a good player, but it does help that you have a certain skill set. But my last few comments stand, women can do anything as good as a man can, especially in the world of sports. Anyway I won't rant on any longer in here, I made the point I wanted to get across today, end of rant, for me anyhow.
@DaveHero75 the US national women's team lost to an under 15s boys squad lol
@jrt87 I don't watch football because I find watching it boring but I'd much rather watch a bunch of women run around then a bunch of men lol
