Square Enix has opened up on why Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is launching as a PS5 exclusive. Okay, so Sony obviously has an exclusivity deal in place — but we're talking beyond contractual agreements here. According to interview quotes compiled by Gematsu, it's the power of the PS5 that allows Rebirth to flow as an adventure.
"It’s exclusive to PlayStation 5 because of the graphical quality, of course, as well as SSD access speed. Since the adventure unfolds in a vast world after the escape from Midgar, loading stress is an extreme bottleneck," the developers explain.
"We felt we needed the specifications of PlayStation 5 to overcome that and travel the world comfortably."
Going by this quote, it does sound as though Rebirth is going to be big in terms of scope. We don't yet know whether it'll have open world elements — Square Enix says more information on that aspect of the title will be shared later — but it's fair to assume that it's not just going to be a series of corridors, which is sometimes a criticism that's aimed at Final Fantasy VII Remake.
The company says that Rebirth is progressing quickly — and that's partly down to the fact that the team had already eased itself into PS5 development with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It'll be interesting to see just how "vast" Rebirth ends up being, especially since the project doesn't have to hold anything back for the sake of PS4 hardware.
Are you happy to hear that Rebirth is a current-gen game only? Think about that world map in the comments section below.

Good, no more last gen holding it back, considering ps4 came out in 2013 . Wonder how the story will play out Zack back in the fold , as cloud was never really a member of soldier 🤔 😁
Bummer for folks who only have a PS4 and now can’t finish the story, but… they made the right call!
I would have really liked them to just make a straightforward remake of the original, but I'm interested (and terrified) to see what they do with Rebirth.
It's gonna be great to see the world beyond Midgar - I just wanna see a Midgar Zolom. I hope they keep the horrifying scene with the impaled one, that really showed how much of a force of nature Sephiroth was. We definitely need to still have some of these iconic scenes even if they deviate in other places.
The PS5 is 3 years old when this game releases, I sure hope developers leave last gen behind at this point
It sounds as if Rebirth will be an amazing journey on the ps5! As this year closes, there won't be anymore ps4 sony exclusives after GOWR.
I'm very pleased, its time to let the past go and all future games should be ps5 exclusive, let's see what it can do.
Goodbye corridors. You won’t be missed.
@TwoPieceTanookiSuit I doubt it for multiple reasons
1: They removed the trail of blood in Shinra Tower which completely butchered the scene so if a blood trail on the floor was apparently too much I doubt they'll show a monster impaled on a tree with blood dripping down.
2: With the way they completely mishandled Sephiroth in part one with him showing up every 5 minutes and getting his ass kicked by the party at the end the scene will now make no sense and hold no weight Sephiroth is supposed to be a mystery and the dead Zolum was supposed to further build it and make you scared of him but again now you've seen him too much and kicked his ass so the scene will mean nothing.
Forspoken on Steam is 79,99€. Just how expensive is this game going to be?
I mean... we're two years into the life of PS5. This game is at least another year off. It's time for PS4 to be sunsetted.
@Bismarck $200.
Part/disc 1 - PS4 - $60
Part/disc 2 - PS5 - $70
Part/disc 3 - PS5 - $70
Full game = $200.
@Keyblade-Dan Ahaha, yeah, sadly you're absolutely right. They've already messed things up - I was so disappointed when I saw the first game end with Sephiroth. No build up, no intrigue, no mysticism - what a waste, it'd be like having the shark present throughout all of Jaws!
Ooh im looking forward to this! Next winter ends feb/march 2024 though, so thats when im expecting it to hit.
Sounds good, let's hope I can get a PS5 by then 😒
Good to hear. That was one of my only issues with Remake. Next year is going to an absolute behemoth year for JRPG fans with like three Trails games and two Final Fantasy games? And that's just what we know about!
"We needed the power of PS5 to procedurally generate our new randomized story."
I don't think it is an open world. The brief gameplay they did show has the pre-rendered backgrounds they utilized in the first game. I expect large, connected zones over a true open-world structure.
Cool.more final fantasy is always welcome.word up son
I honestly can't wait to see how the PS5 tech is used in the coming years, PS4 has been holding it back but hopefully starting next year current gen can actually start being a thing.
It would be funny if they say this and the game end up coming out running at 30fps and unstable.
Gosh. Last gen don't matter to me, but I hate when they exclude other platforms.
@Keyblade-Dan Well I've read somewhere (can't remember where) that blood will be coming back. The dlc started it and it's going to go from there. As for it being mishandled. If you knew what ff7r actually is you wouldn't be saying that.
Hope Forespoken's development has been a source they've used to expand on in terms of an open world.
@Keyblade-Dan
Well it's now clear it's a sequel, hopefully though, Ever Crisis will satisfy the people watching a straight remake.
@feral1975 I seriously doubt a crappy mobile game is going to satisfy the fans that wanted and spent an entire decade begging for a faithful AAA Remake of FF VII.
It's plausible considering any game that's developed for the series X also has to run on the series S & maybe this game was just too ambitious for the S but we'll have to see just how 'next gen'' (I know it's current gen now) this game really is
Edit* after reading the comments I think i got confused & thought they were talking about ps5 over Xbox series
All of that is complete BS when you consider Elden Ring is on the OG PS4, that being said I own a PS5 and glad for it to use all the features, but I will truly question why any game could possibly need to be a PS6 exclusive
Damn, SE hyping their prospective overlords.
Wonder if Sony acquiring SE would be a good or bad thing!
Sure squareenix buddy, until you port the game to pc and suddenly the game can runs on the slow hdd.
Just picked up the ps5 ver of remake to prepare myself.
@Keyblade-Dan
Sorry I meant to say if it gets ported to consoles.
@tallythwack totally… I’ve been truly blown away by proper ps5 exclusives so far. Demons remake is astonishing.. but I’m hyped for this even more and being fully next gen.. this is gonna be impressive
@throwmeaname all these exclusives coming to ps platform makes me think it’s already a done deal tbh
@3Above @Ear_wiG Here's hoping PS5s become more readily available and affordable by the time Rebirth finally releases.
@ColdHandGee Indeed! All future first-party Sony games should be PS5 exclusives.
I look forward to seeing them being able to push the tech to it's limits.
@TrickyDicky99 I said other platforms, as in current gen consoles. Not old consoles.
@KidRyan Is this game a first party sony game? pretty sure Square Enix isn't owned by Sony, also i still don't get the gatekeeping part if only having exclusivity is the driving force a platform that platform sucks by design. was gona pick up the first one now they won't get a sale until they inevitably port it to PC
@BladeBK I never once said that FF7 Rebirth was a 1st party exclusive. I do know that it's a 3rd party game developed by the 3rd party studio Square-Enix.
I was replying to ColdHandGee's comment about that we should be done with PS4 exclusives soon.
