Guerrilla Games has announced the online servers of Killzone Shadow Fall, standalone co-op mode Intercept, PS Vita game Killzone Mercenary, and PSVR title RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will all be turned off on 12th August 2022. This will leave only the single player campaigns of each game playable following the shutdown, and also explains why Intercept will be leaving PS Plus Extra in the near future — presumably on the same day.
Server shutdowns are commonplace for Sony nowadays, with recent victims being Everybody's Golf, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, and LittleBigPlanet. It means any online connectivity is cut off; this goes beyond simple multiplayer support. With Killzone Shadow Fall being part of PS Plus Extra, this may be disappointing news for anyone who started playing its multiplayer recently.

We need a new Killzone fully realised for PS5 technology.
Seems a bit of a shambles as usual from Sony
Quite a few people have just discovered the game via PS+ wouldn't have hurt to allow 3 more months
I think it's very short-termism of Sony, the way they've treated some of their key franchises and not to mention UK studios
I said this in the article yesterday about the co op mode.
A shame seeing as it was part of PS Plus Extra therefore may have gotten a small bump in activity of late.
Tbh I doubt many people are still playing these anyway. They're almost 10 years old and were never the biggest things in gaming in the first place. It's probably perfectly reasonable to shut them down at this point (sorry to those who were actually still playing).
Mercenary still has players online and Shadow Fall is so underrated for multiplayer.
Shame it was cast aside at launch.
That was expected but understandable. Killzone shadowfall sadly wasn't as popular as it once was. And as for killzone mercenaries? Sadly the same but it was good fun while it lasted. Killzone Mercs definitely had a good run, and it still remains as one of my favorite Killzone games. Still wish there was a way for Sony to bring back their PS vita exclusives for the newer audience like Mercenaries, Soul Sacrifice and Freedom Wars (maybe even bringing back their servers too?), but that's just pure wishful thinking.
I loved Killzone Shadow Fall MP back in its prime. Same with Mercenary. That's one of my favorite Vita games. I really hope Guerilla is working on something Killzone related on PS5. Don't get me wrong Horizon is cool but honestly I would prefer they get back to Killzone for their next game.
Funny, if you check the Killzone Vita ToS they actually say that they will announce a closure of the Online Servers at least 3 months in advance...🙃
@Sqush-Pare We need a new Everybody's Golf (not going to happen - thanks Ryan et al) and LittleBigPlanet (if Media Molecule can get their fingers out of their Dreams-hole) as well but Sony just seem to be completely blasé about it all.
I...totally forgot about Killzone Shadow Fall, and it was one of my first PS4 games 😔 I should revisit it.
@sanderson72 Media Molecule will probably be shut down next since they arent even developing anything new atm
I think Guerrilla working on a new killzone or fps game especially since Sony own Bungie.
@4kgk2 might be socom
@IonMagi how do you know media molecule ain’t working on anything new.
@IonMagi True, given Sony's short-sighted studio closures! Still think the PS ecosystem is somewhat crippled by lack of Evolution, Studio Liverpool and Japan Studio.
I think it's time for LBP4 and bring all the user created content over to the new one.
Probably won't happen as that'd be creative and Sony don't seem to do that any more - Little Souls-a-like Planet anyone?
@Americansamurai1 Guerrilla isn’t working on socom that’s not they’re ip.
@4kgk2 They arent hiring much and if then only for Dreams. A Game they didnt even port to PS5 natively
Could be looking towards the future, why keep them live if they have something in the pipework for Killzone.
@Broosh
Looks great on PS5, IMO has held up pretty well.
@4kgk2 hopefully they working on a game like tearaway, a game that takes advantage of the dualsense
@4kgk2 Sony owns the IP and zipper is no more
@IonMagi they work on smaller games so Sony keep they around doesn’t cost Sony much.
@4kgk2 They arent making money either tho lol, Sony has shut down tons of other Studios that had 1 failure so MMs days might be counted. Dreams was the only Game they released for most of the PS4 Gen (besides the other Vita Game)
@Americansamurai1 why would Guerrilla work on a dead franchise someone else made instead of working on they own ip that doesn’t make any sense.
They should award the mp trophies to people who play after the servers shut down!
@MeatyVeg Oh yes Sony is in absolute shambles from shutting down the servers for 8 year old games that no one plays anymore. The game was already on PS Now for years, if people were playing they wouldn't shut down the servers.
It's a good time for people to start working on the multiplayer trophies if they still needed them. Already have the platinum for both so I'm good. Would really love to see a collection of some of those Vita games for PS4&5 to keep them alive. Just don't need to add the multiplayer parts.
I messed up the Soul Sacrifice platinum. Was making the most of the weekends to get help with the hard pacts and I didn't notice there was even more harder pacts to do. Since the servers closed I've to do them alone. In my case I was distracted with other games and ended up forgetting so try not to make the same mistake I did
We need Killzone 1-3 remaster.
Does Shadow Fall run with 60 fps on ps5 or is it a capped 30?
It's never fun to see online servers get shutdown but it's understandable for a game that's been out for so long with little to no online activity.
@4kgk2 socom has a wider appeal than killzone. Killzone is probably dead.
@Americansamurai1 you know killzone shadow fall sold more than any socom.
@Reeneman It runs at 60fps on PS5
@4kgk2 i don't even know which sold more, just saying Socom has a bigger appeal. I never played socom myself and have played every killzone. Killzone 2 was the peak and it went downhill after that
Killzone 3/2 were some of my favorite multiplayer games on the PS3. Shadow Fall just couldn't match it in my book. I enjoyed the single player campaign, even though it felt a bit rushed.
@Americansamurai1 how do Socom a third person Tactical shooter it like we don’t have 10 games like that already lol. Killzone was fun and with Bungie help Guerrlla could take the franchise to the next level.
This is disappointing. Killzone MP is excellent. I haven't played in a while due to not having a PS+ sub for years. It's unfortunate there won't be any way to play Killzone MP on PlayStation going forward. Though I do understand it if the player count is low, which I'm sure it is.
@4kgk2 I know you love killzone, but it was never the top fps for Sony. Resistance was. Socom was one of the biggest online games for the PS2.If it is Socom that guerrilla is developing which is heavily rumored than it probably be 1st and 3rd person.
I’m not surprised. No one plays Shadow Fall MP anymore.
But I will say that they should have. While the campaign left a lot to be desired, the multiplayer suite in SF was fantastic and easily the true highlight of the PS4 launch cycle.
I would love to see GG take another stab at the franchise.
@Americansamurai1 killzone sold better than Resistance too 😂.
@4kgk2 show the numbers and sources
see you online on the 11th August then for one last game
Another reason I try to avoid these ***** mp games. Because one day the plug will be pulled on all of them.
Less than a month notice when their own T&C says they will give 90 days notice. Absolute scumbags. The trophy rush commences.
@Teddie-bear you can still platinum soul sacrifice. It won't be cheap you need a second vita and a second physical copy. But you can adhoc the consoles to unlock those trophies.
@IonMagi yep 90 days. Breaching their own TCS. As such they have been sent emails by legal companies reminding them of their obligations, maybe they will delay it but I doubt it. Less than 30 days notice is taking the piss plain and simple.
@Resi32 Thankfully I have most of them done and out of the way so that part isn't a problem. The part I need to do now is the level 11 to 15 pacts. Took a long break from the game so I didn't realise i had to turn the page to see those. Could have used the help with online players as the AI keep falling and the fights takes a long time. So I've a lot of grinding to do. Had i done it online then I would only need to focus on Alice Maze.
There really not giving us much of a heads up are they? Less than a month?
Ok now it makes sense why Intercept is being removed from PS+ Extra.
I’ll look back on KZ: SF multiplayer with fond memories. Spent a good couple months grinding out all the online trophies. It has a very underrated online multiplayer, and you can even play by yourself with the excellent bot system Guerilla implemented.
But I can’t imagine there’s that many playing it in 2022 so it makes sense to close down.
@Americansamurai1 https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.destructoid.com/killzone-shadow-fall-has-sold-over-2-1m-copies/amp/
@Americansamurai1 killzone shadow fall sold 2.1 in the first two months.
@Ken_Kaniff
I mean… the servers were running from 2013 until 2022.
That’s a pretty long time.
Multiplayer games are usually the kind of things people play for a year or two and then move on. Servers aren’t going to be kept running forever.
Mercenary multiplayer was surprisingly good, so this is a shame.
@Ken_Kaniff better to have loved and lost...
I bought killzone shadow fall with my ps4 along with bloodborne and it was never well populated online back then..i recently tried it again with my mate and it was dead..virtually zero players online so its no loss really..
@IonMagi
How do you know there not developing something? Just curiosity
@TommyNL "They arent hiring much and if then only for Dreams. A Game they didnt even port to PS5 natively"
@IonMagi So it's pure speculation on your part and nothing actual concrete. Got it
The 10 players always playing mercenary are going to be devastated. It's also going to make getting the plat impossible. This is why I hate online trophies.
I’m not surprised that Sony decided it is time to shut down those games servers because they are preparing for their Live Service Games maybe next year Sony will release one or two of their 10+live service games.
Half surprised and half not surprised, it really sucks that all the PlayStation companies throw aside beloved brands that I beg for a sequel/remake/remastered or reboot. It's happening with Sly Cooper and Infamus and now with Killzone and although I'm in favor of these companies working and bringing us more new brands and amazing games and continuing to progress and enrich the amount of their projects and IP's, but it sucks to see that they don't throw aside games that built them and move to what they are today. I would be happy if they keep the servers open and let the community continue to enjoy these amazing games or at least get something new from this brand and I don't care if it's a new game or remakes/remasters of previous games. Because this franchise "failed" (in my opinion it didn't and I also see that there are millions of fans and a huge community who really love Killzone Shadow Fall) only once and if that's what stops this amazing brand it really sucks and I would be happy if they give this brand at least another chance.
And this is why I despite multiplayer trophies! They will always eventually kill off the servers, making plats impossible to obtain.
They should follow the halo model, release Killzone 5 with a standalone F2P multiplayer
