Super Smash Bros inspired platforming fighting mash-up MultiVersus is blowing up – and rightly so. The game has absolutely roared towards the top of Steam’s most-played list following the launch of its open beta earlier this week, peaking at 144,456 players earlier today. By way of comparison, juggernaut fighting game Street Fighter 5 has an all-time peak of 14,783 on Valve’s PC platform.
Now it’s important to remember that MultiVersus is free-to-play, but at the time of writing it’s attracting more players than established rivals like Rocket League and Fall Guys. In fact, even using PSNProfiles’ small sample size, the Warner Bros title is behind only social media phenomenon Stray on the site’s most played list, based on Trophy data.
Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t publish player stats, so it’s difficult to get a firm read on how MultiVersus is performing against free-to-play titans like Fortnite and Apex Legends on PSN specifically, but it’s fair to say this could be the next big thing. Speaking of which, if you’d like to polish up your fighting chops, check out our MultiVersus guide.

I thought that picture was Paddy the baddy Pimblet for a split second
It just released, calm down lol. It's like those articles that say "xyz game is number one on Twitch"! Then it disappears into the ether a few weeks after. Let's see how the game does after a month or two
Take note Sony give us our PlayStation all-stars 2
This was what Maximilion Dood has been saying for awhile that more fighting games should adopt the F2P model because it completely lowers the barrier to entry. And while I see from where he's coming from, I don't think it works for more traditional fighting games. At least not yet.
Wow, I didn’t quite expect it to be this big. It’s a crazy concept after all.
“Unfortunately, Sony doesn’t publish most played stats”. This is something that they really need to do. At the very least, they could give a top fifty most played games list so that any consumer considering purchasing a multiplayer title would at least have a vague idea of how healthy the games population was.
@Legacy2K Maybe it will die down, doesn't change the fact that its all-time peak is ten times higher than pretty much any other noteworthy fighting game.
Im playing Rag Doll Kung Fu Fists of Plastic, thats the biggest fighting game in the world right now.....for me anyway
I tried with some friends last night and had a blast. Tom & Jerry for the win!
It’s good but I do feel like I’m just smashing random buttons and hoping for the best.
I really don’t care for Smash Brothers, even though I’ve been suckered into buying it twice based on glowing reviews, but I’m having a lot of fun with this. I’ve always preferred more traditional fighting games to this sort of thing, but MultiVersus is doing a lot right here in the early going.
It’s an interesting game. It looks like a Smash clone but once you start playing it you realize it’s completely different.
I’m having issues with the movement. I have a ton of hours in smash dating back to my childhood. So my movement on multi versus is trash at the moment.
I reset the controls to more closely mimic smash. It’s helped some. But the movement is so different it’s shocking. It’s hard to get used to.
Release a polished product with functional online and it does well!?
Quick, someone send word to everyone else that wants to make a Smash-like on how to actually succeed!
This is definitely the best and most polished Smash clone that has ever been made, being called a clone my sound bad to some people but we have searched long for an alternative to Smash Bros.
PlayStation All-stars could have been that game but it didn't stick the landing. Being only able to defeat someone with the Super made the matches boring and made actually fighting pointless.
@get2sammyb True, ftp certainly is helping in that regard. Good to see regardless
@Sakisa if only it were that simple
I was doing good last night when I first started until I met a pro player already, couldn't even land a hit on the guy xd
Having such a blast with it even though I hate fighters!
Well not anymore with this one.
Party game, not fighting game, there is a difference.
Stupid Sony abandoning PS AllStars too early. Could have been a fantastic live service games in early PS4 days with DLC fighters tying into new games by Sony or 3rd party studios.
@AdamNovice Yeah, he was talking about this last night on his stream. He does mention that games like Mortal Kombat wouldn't work, since they tend to sell very well, due to the name and everything (plus MK games tend to hold up value, as they offer a lot of content, like Story Mode or even the Krypt). Smaller titles, though, like maybe Virtua Fighter or the recent DNF Duel, could probably work as free-to-play. I do wonder if a lot of the criticisms that Street Fighter 5 faced at launch would've been lesser if it was free-to-play.
@MasterVGuides I suspect probably so, though Capcom badly needed the money then. Thankfully there better off now.
@rachetmarvel Seems like a needless hill to die on. I know there's a whole stink about Super Smash and its alikes not being fighting games. But... They're literally competitive games in which players physically fight each other.
I can understand holding platform fighters to a lower regard than a traditional fighter (kinda a nebulous term when EVERYTHING besides Smash-likes and Power Stone-likes ostensibly apply). But to disregard them as 'not' fighting games is cartoonishly reductive. Doubling down and calling them party games, as though they don't reward skill or allow intimate, fierce competition, just tells me you're probably bad at them.
It is like mobile games... 100+ milion downloads... ...but 100 active players.
It may be the current big thing, but the game is ass.
I have to hard disagree with this site's opinion, the game is too far from Smash sole: very few characters, and I'm missing an arcade mode or some sort of campaign like in Smash Ultimate, but I guess is just a beta. Also the lag... I can't play "good" because my character is always teleporting all over the arena, so I have to smash and spam buttons, this even happens fighting against Bots!!!! and my internet connection is pretty good.
Other than that, the animations are good, the music is good and the gameplay is pretty solid, I like the co-op features, I hope they address the lacks of this game very soon but this is why I hate service oriented games, they're always unfinished products and I hate the fact that the gaming industry is going more and more into that route.
PD: I hope Sony can bring back PS All-stars some day. But I want a more serious attempt this time, that means BIG budget, maybe a renowned japanese studio can take the task so the game can have top tier gameplay, and of course lots of characters including popular third parties franchises.
I agree with people in this comment section. I miss playstation all stars, and there was room for improvement, what game doesn't, I at least think they needed to give it one more shot!
Batman Vs Bugs.
What's not to love?
Actually had a fun time partied up with a friend on it last night, very much not the type of thing I'd normally go for and not sure if will have long lasting appeal but it is good for a blast. And it's free!
@Shepard93n7 Yeah um, and well you can not like the game thats just fine, just cant really agree with lack of characters,(Which there is ngl) the game is in beta and from the leaks that we now know is real, the roster is going to be massive, and they already announced three fighters.
I agree the internet can be wonky at times, but if its that bad to the point that you need to start spamming, then it might not be the games fault, as I never ran into this issue, and my internet is not the best at the moment, and during alpha when my internet was great, the game ran like butter.
and you say you this is why you hate service oriented games, because they're always unfinished products, and not that I dont agree with this statement, this game is in beta? should it at least get a chance?
again, you can hate the game, I'm not telling you you can't.
I’ll just play Smash…
@Member_the_game he should be the next DLC character
I played Super Smash Bros 20 years ago and this is essentially still the same game. I was bored half way through the first match.
I just started playing it an hour ago and I'm having a freaking blast
Just tried it and dunno just got tired of mashing buttons.
Smash type games ain’t really fighting games they more of brawlers.
I'm glad the game is performing well, but still not touching it until they release a story mode!
