The MultiVersus open beta kicks off for all starting today, and following a week of early access, developer Player First Games is making some adjustments as part of today's game update.
The major addition being made in this patch is of course LeBron James as a brand new playable character, but there's a little more to take note of, especially for those who've been terrorising the game as a tornado-happy Taz. Yes, Taz's side special, which sees him whip up into the character's signature tornado, has been far too powerful during the early access portion of the beta, so the studio has made some adjustments to bring it down a peg. What's interesting is that the team is looking at rebalancing Taz completely — today's changes are more of a quick fix.
Elsewhere, Bugs Bunny's baseball bat swing has also been nerfed, as has Batman's batarang, and various bugs on Iron Giant have been addressed. We've included the full patch notes below:
Open Beta
- Lebron James has arrived! He is our first basketball-wielding character!
New Free Character Rotation (7/26 to 8/8)
- Finn
- Garnet
- Superman
- Reindog
New Open Beta Warp Event:
- For a LIMITED TIME Gold earned from matches has increased by 25% from 7/26 to 8/8 as an Open Beta Welcome Event!
Characters
Batman
- - Air/Ground Neutral Attack: Cooldown on Batarang increased from 13s to 14s. Pick up of Batarang returns 11.55 second up from 11.05. This means that the minimum time between Batarang throws is 2.45s up from 1.95s.
- Batman’s Batarang pick-up cooldown created very small windows where the Batarang wasn’t in play. This change should make it so opponents of Batman have a larger window between Batarang attacks to gain advantage.
- Bug Fix: Air/Ground Side Special: Fixed a bug where Grapple would sometimes shoot you off the map.
Bugs Bunny
- - Air Up Attack: Startup window increased by 2 frames, active window decreased by 2 frames
- The hitbox made it so that Bugs Bunny hit nearly all around himself. This should make the up air a bit more reasonable to deal with.
Iron Giant
- Bug Fix: Air Down Attack: can no longer combo into itself
- Bug Fix: Air/Ground Down Special: can no longer repeatedly hit and lock opponents in place forever
- Bug Fix: Air Up Attack: Can no longer repeatedly hit opponents
Steven Universe
- - Air Neutral Attack: Knocks opponents up and away to prevent an infinite attack caused by alternating Air Down Attack and Air Neutral Attack.
Taz
- Bug Fix: Fixed a bug that was preventing Taz from doing any aerial attacks once he reached his air special limit.
- - Air/Ground Side Special:
- If you have been following early access, Taz’s Tornado has been dominating his character kit and presenting a non-obvious knowledge check for newer players. By reducing its effectiveness we hope to improve his gameplay health and loop and bring the game to a healthier state for newer players.
- A decrease to the tornado's duration and the additional duration gained by passing an ally.
- Removing one of the multi-hits of the tornado.
- Decreasing the hit pause of all the hits in the tornado.
- Reduced knockback from the final hit in the tornado from 1375 to 1275.
- Right now, our plan is to transition the Tornado to a cooldown move in an upcoming patch. The tornado is Taz's signature move so we want to keep it as one of his most powerful attacks, with the cooldown forcing more intentional use of it. These nerfs will reduce Taz's strength, especially at higher levels of play, so expect some buffs to the other moves in his kit in the near future. Thank you for your patience and we will continue to evaluate Taz’s gameplay health.

Velma
- - Weight: reduced from 70 to 63
- It was an oversight on our part that Velma is one of the heaviest characters in the game. This change should bring her more in-line with where we originally envisioned her.

So now I have to unlock Shaggy, Harley Quinn, Jake and Taz after playing them for a week?
Gold needs boosting massively, if you lose one match and the opponent doesn't want to rematch you get 7 gold. SEVEN! In a game where characters cost between 1500 to 3000 gold. The game's excellent but it doesn't feel rewarding.
@AdamNovice Lol that's ridiculous. I avoid Free 2 Play like the plague so I won't be getting anywhere close to this one. Too bad because it looks like it is a very well done game otherwise.
@AdamNovice I just logged in to check this as I thought there’s no way they’d lock out characters you’ve already progressed. Turns out I was wrong! How frustrating!
Edit: On reflection I do understand the decision - if they kept the original free characters unlocked then players wouldn’t have to engage with Gold or Gleamium, they could just wait long enough and all the characters would eventually be playable. Still, it feels kinda nasty to have something taken away from you. Very strange.
@AdamNovice Same. I don't care how good this game is/looks, I've never liked the MOBA system of having to purchase characters to fully enjoy the game. I get it if you get the game, it's complete with a robust roster and you're just purchasing extra characters. But having to pick and choose which characters I want with my money is wild to me. Meanwhile I can pick up Super Smash Bros Ultimate and have 76 characters I can play with for free.
@Quintumply The problem is the gold rewards are so low that you have few characters to play with as is. Essentially Wonder Woman and whoever you buy with your starter gold are the only characters you own and then the long grind begins. They needed to do what Brawlhalla does and sell a pack that gets you all current and future characters.
Taz was too strong? I was destroying every Taz player i faced 🤷♂️
@AdamNovice Definitely agree the gold rewards are too small.
@AdamNovice
I think the gold is fine, the matches take 3 minutes tops, it's like fps games where you need to play a lot of games just to earn guns.
Not to mention you get 100 gold per level and that takes 5 or so matches.
Edit: Although I do agree that the customization does cost more than I would've liked xd
@AdamNovice
I can agree that gold is very limited. Maybe the characters. Played over 20 hours and made about 15k
I’ve just started playing tonight and the gold, xp and battle pass progression does seem a bit grindy.
You do get a 30% boost (gold & xp) if you play with a friend but its still going to be struggle to finish the battle pass before the end of the Beta.
I’m enjoying the game a lot more than I thought I would though 👍
@AdamNovice Whats even worse is that they didnt even make it obvious that they were temporary, so anyone who spent all there coins on anyone else, thinking they would keep (Main here) is now having to grind out coins again.
I mean how is shaggy not free? he is on the cover, he was advertised a bunch when the game was announced, and he was even recommended, yet wonder woman is are only free character?
lack of communication probably screwed a lot of people over, and yes they have there new coins event, it makes it better but to make the most of it people have to toast you, which they wont because there out, and dont want to waste coins that were hard to grind out in the first place, that could be used for character, and for some, the ones that aren't free anymore.
sorry for the rant, it just annoys me that the didn't communicate it better, heck I didn't even know up till the last day lol. Edit: playing with friends is also an option. And I also agree with you on a pack that gives you all the characters, because as it is the fonder's pack is overpriced and the only thing you get out of it even worth value is bragging rights.
So I can't play as Shaggy anymore? I've been playing every match so far with him. Surely not locked up now?!
