SEGA's long-running Phantasy Star series is finally returning to PlayStation. Phantasy Star Online 2, and massively updated kind-of-sequel-in-everything-but-name, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis are heading West for PS4 on the 31st August. Currently, both games are only available on PC and Xbox here in the West.
If you're sitting there wondering what the heck Phantasy Star Online 2 and New Genesis are, the bottom line is that they're free-to-play action RPGs set in the futuristic Phantasy Star universe. There are multiple weapon types to master, and loads of missions to tackle (in co-op, if you prefer).

Has anyone here played these games on Xbox / PC? Should we be excited? I've read some mixed things over the years but never been able to try them myself.
FINALLY!!! waited years and years and then some more years for this!! And then I'll obviously
end up disappointed that it's nothing like the original PSO on Dreamcast after all that build up 🤣
I don't care if it's average, I just need new Phantasy Star in my life.
I'd rather have a single player Phantasy Star, but I'll give this one a go if it can be reasonably done solo.
@Milktastrophe Most of them can. The psp ones for example were easy enough to solo if you grinded enough.
My goodness! I've been waiting a long time for this to be announced. Super happy and very much looking forward to jumping into the world of PSO again. The first game on Dreamcast many years back made a huge impression on me that never really diminished. Feeling very blessed right now.
This makes me so happy! I’ve lost count of the amount of hours I’ve put into the first game on both Dreamcast and Gamecube.
@ShogunRok I don't think anyone played this game on Xbox. Just because Microsoft took it hostage doesn't mean their audience asked for it.
I loved Phantasy Star Online on the Dreamcast so much. Will definitely dig into this one!
@ShogunRok I pretty sure @Royalblues still plays. Maybe the poke will help. Royal, are you able to help?
@ShogunRok There is a community. I played it on XBox at launch and really enjoyed it. Kept playing until the launch of New Genesis which ran terribly on my XBox One S. I am really looking forward to playing it on my PS5! Seems like that's where it belongs.
The game is nothing groundbreaking: just fun. I enjoy SciFi more than fantasy and there aren't very many options. As a casual hobby, I think you might enjoy PSO2.
People talk about moneyhatting, how much did xbox pay to keep this off PS in the western territories
Wow Xbox had long timed exclusivity on this. Can't say nothing because PS doesn't it too. I've noticed that Xbox is getting more aggressive with timed exclusives on Japanese games.
@uptownsoul exactly. Hurts when the majority of western players are knocked out. Cant imagine how few players play this on xbox
I'm hoping this game is solo friendly, I don't usually have people to play online with for mmorpg's so I usually have to matchmake, but if the games dies off then it becomes unplayable if it's heavily focused on being in a group to do missions and dungeons etc
@Royalblues @mousieone @OmniHawk Thanks for the info, will almost certainly give this a go when it comes out.
@ShogunRok Very stylish nice feeling game. I played some people in USA on 360 when it was a subscription game. It is good fun. It's repetitive but also very moreish.
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm pretty sure you can solo a lot, but later in tougher levels where the enemies are too hard it might be kinda fun to join a group. Nowhere near as involved as say wow, but still good fun and a lovely style.
If cross save isn't a thing it's going to suck starting over to me. I'm glad cross play is at least a thing.
@ShogunRok original pso2 is good. NGS is trash. NGS focuses more on scratch tickets than actual content.
Oh wow... didn't have enough players on Xbox anymore huh? 😋
I guess i will give it a try... but i doubt it will recapture the feel of the original, which was my first online rpg.
Reading about predatory practices here makes me think i will delete it after trying it out
@Royalblues @ShogunRok Dumb question, but do I need to have played the first Phantasy Star Online to appreciate PSO2's story?
@BartoxTharglod @RedRiot193 Okay, consider my expectations lowered!
@ShogunRok
Yes!!!! Dude, I have been literally waiting for PSO2 to come to consoles for 5 years or longer. Great game if your are into MMO’s.
New genesis is also fantastic, so excited for this
@Zukato
The original PSO is what started MMO’s. My best memory as a kid was getting a Dreamcast at launch and playing Phantasy Star with my dial up internet, keyboard, and controller. This was before WoW was even thought of. I feel like that game never got the credit it deserved, it was so ahead of its time
@BartoxTharglod Hard pass on this game then, thanks for the heads up about no story relevance!
@ShogunRok RPGFan's review of it wasn't too flattering, so it might be one of those cases where you might want to wait for a deep sale then give it a shot.
@ShogunRok Also this one is a personal one of mine. But the enemy variety in ngs is abbysmal. Original pso2 has way better enemy variety. And even some goofy enemies that are fun to fight and look at. The only two things you'll probably love from ngs is the mmo style open world and the gameplay. But that to me is not enough.
@BartoxTharglod Cool
I guess I may be the only one wondering if I can switch my character over from xbox sx to ps5. Maybe this means it may come to the USA on switch now as well.
@K-Z I don't think you can
