Update: It's now been confirmed a physical version of Psychonauts 2 will be releasing on 27th September 2022, and will include bonuses like a lenticular outer sleeve, stickers, reversible boxart, art cards, and a code to access behind-the-scenes content. Check out a video above detailing all of the physical bonuses.
Original story: Double Fine appears to be lining up a physical version of Psychonauts 2, courtesy of Skybound Games. Gematsu saw the retail listing on Amazon Germany, where a physical €69.99 version of the 3D platformer is set for a 27th September 2022 release. If it's real, the physical version arrives more than a year after the title's digital launch on the PS Store.
Amazon Germany has named the boxed copy Psychonauts 2: Motherlode. It's currently unclear whether the addition of a subtitle refers to any new content, but since Double Fine hasn't produced any DLC since release last year — nor has it hinted at any — we think it's safe to assume this is purely a bit of marketing to get the physical version out there.
Psychonauts 2 released in August 2021 to critical acclaim, ranking fifth in our overall Game of the Year list. It also took second place in our Best PS5, PS4 Story or Writing category. However, despite the praise, some PlayStation fans felt a little hard done by due to the lack of a native PS5 version and a boxed copy. This new physical release should fix the latter problem, while the former was addressed with a PS5 patch that boosts the game via backwards compatibility.

Incredible game and I really hope those who rejected the digital version give it a shot now. I played it on Series X so can’t speak for the PS version but it is a very creative platformer, with a strong story and smooth gameplay. And I had never played the first. It was my runner up GOTY 2021, only losing to It Takes Two.
I’m totally onboard if this plays out.
It's a really charming and fun game for the most part, with a really lovely art style. I personally found the gameplay a bit boring and tedious after a certain point and can't quite put my finger on why. Probably no fault of the game and I was just not feeling it at the time. I did play the PS version and although it was absolutely fine, I think it would have really benefitted from a PS5 upgrade.
No PS5 version, no purchase.
Loved this game and really must replay. Ever part of it was so creative, an absolute joy to play.
Would have only been interested in a PS5 Retail but alas...not paying the same for a worse product
That price is insane 69.99 for a PS4 game but i have the first one on PS4 so ill bite.
I recently finished this on Game Pass and while it's not a bad game the reviews were definitely very generous.
@Ward_ting I definitely agree on this point. I feel my biggest issue is that whilst you can upgrade your powers it never really feels like you're getting any stronger against enemies. It made combat very tedious.
@Flaming_Kaiser i agree. The price seems to be more inline with a AAA ps5 release. It £50 on the store so unless it comes in a really nice box il get the cheaper option lol
@Rob3008 Yea absolutely agree there. I do think the reviews were very generous indeed. A lot of people compare Psychonauts to Ratchet and Clank, but for me they are worlds apart, or should that be rifts apart...?
Ratchets' weapon upgrade process, plus the sheer number of weapons you have access to, makes combat so incredibly fun and engaging and I didn't find it monotonous or tiresome at all.
My GOTY last year, might go in on a physical version to display next to my original Xbox copy of Psychonauts
Might buy it in a discount later.
Dont know about anyone else, but i could get into it and dropped after 5 hours. Felt like it got way overhyped and loved because it was now an xbox studio. Probably the last we see of double fine
I'll gladly buy a physical copy to support the devs. Really enjoyed the game.
One of my fave games from 2021.
I played it on Game Pass, but I really wanted a physical copy for my collection. Hope it is true!
@Deadlyblack
Well devs have now an almost unlimited moneybag to use.
£69.99 for a ps4 game? And yet people moan about sony charging £69.99 for PS5 games 😑
@JAMes-BroWWWn I totally agree with you, why should playstation gamers have to pay the same price for a ps4 version as xbox players pay for a next gen version
The Collectors Edition comes with the first game too.

I’m buzzing!!! So pleased I was patient and waited for a physical release…the motherlode edition looks great with all the goodies and will be perfect if they include the 1st game in with it which was one of my all time favs…now if Sega could just announce a physical Sonic Origins I will probably explode 😉
@Mole17
Rhombus of Ruin had the first game included, it was a good bit cheaper than £69.99
That price is inexplicable given the digital price, but regardless, it's such a fantastic game, it's good to see it's getting a physical release.
I'm still getting the feeling that physical pricing is more and more becoming set for the expectation that there's a particular niche supporting physical now, and resale compensation is being built into the prices for that niche now.
This should have been a thing since the game released. Still now I might actually play it.
@UltimateOtaku91
Wow your right!
The absolute hypocrisy about the price I see on prXbox 😅👀
I'll stick to the digital version, but happy for fans that wanted physical!
@JJ2 I know right, the blind fanboyism over there is unreal, and whilst there's some troll comments about xbox on here sometimes it's worse over there, it feels like there's a deep hatred towards playstation
@UltimateOtaku91
I mean it’s probably off topic and I shouldn’t express myself here on the matter but that site gives the readers what they want more or less I guess. Xbox does blah blah better than PlayStation. That’s all (the philosophy) what the site goes on about haha
@JJ2 totally agree and they only include Japanese sales charts on the weeks when xbox sold more than playstation, trying to give a false narrative.
@UltimateOtaku91
Victory great week 3k + 3k
I’ll never forget that one haha
Absolutely adored this game from beginning to end though a PS5 version would have been even better. But that price? How long before every new game costs almost £100? And of course the special limited custom made individually crafted and numbered edition that requires you to sell your home if you want to preorder it and get 1 hour early access!
@Danloaded Totally understand where you are coming from it not even a enhanced PS5 edition so it should have been €60 at max.
