In the latest instalment of Corporate Bigwig Is Actually Your Friend™, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has declared that, just like you, he’s excited for God of War Ragnarok. The suit declared his enthusiasm in a social media post, where he also listed out the first game he ever played and favourite all-time game.
Spencer won’t need to wait too long to find out what happens next to Kratos and Atreus, as the sequel’s finally been dated for 9th November, 2022. Awkwardly, the release was originally dated for 11th November, 2022 – the same day as Xbox console exclusive Starfield was due out before it was delayed.
We wonder which game he would have picked to play had the dates clashed…

Phil 'DaPony' Spencer
Phil should be worried about giving his platform fans great exclusives games instead of hyping the competition games 😤.
"In the latest installment of Corporate Bigwig Is Actually Your Friend™..."
Now that's the kind of snark I like to see.
Still kind of wish we had a Phil Spencer on the PS side. After the likes of Layden, we just seem to have had mealy mouthed accountants who don't seem to give a **** about the Playstation brand.
Me too, Phil. Mee too.
One of my most anticipated games of this year. Absolutely loved the 2018 GoW and I have faith that Ragnarok will be very good as well.
Everyone is excited for GOW... it is the holiday game to get this year.
Then Gamers will be excited for StarField also. It has been a great start to the generation anyway you slice it. Big top AAA Games everywhere!
"Good guy Phil?"
@sanderson72 what have Phil done for Xbox though besides taking out his you know what. I rather have somebody like Jim running PlayStation who doesn’t talk much but instead let the games do the talking for him.
Absolutely loved the tone of this article 😂
Interesting favourite game choice!
First game: Outlaw (C64)
Last game: Dark Souls 1
Favorite game: Final Fantasy 7 or 9
Game you play the most: (over past 12-18 months) WRC 9 (of all time) as far as I can tell I have the most hours on Diablo 3, but I expect Counter-Strike and Ultima Online are on par.
Game you want to play next: Xenoblade Chronicles 3
First game you'd show a caveman: Fez
@4kgk2 What has he done for Xbox?
He saved the brand after the debacle that was the Xbox One launch, he’s turning the brand into a platform rather than just a console, he’s the one pushing up Game Pass which has become the best value in gaming, he’s slowly transforming Xbox into a first-party powerhouse, etc…
What has Jim Ryan done for PlayStation besides raising game prices, greedy policies across their products and services, closing Japan Studio and being a liar with the whole “we believe in generations” thing?
I get that we’re on a PlayStation blog but we should give credit where credit is due…
Sensible guy, he's no doubt upset his army of incredibly sensitive and irrational Xbots with that comment though.
Anyone with a bit of a higher IQ would pick God of War over Starfield, to be fair!
@4kgk2 I know PS (ironic initials?) talks all positive and then stabs you in the back when you least expect it but at least he seems to give a toss about the brand he's employed by.
Jimbob is mostly invisible, and that's the problem. The only times he makes an appearance, he seems to stick his foot in it and we cringe and wish he hadn't shown up.
PS could do with a charismatic brand lead/evangelist but bland Geordie Jimbob isn't it.
'In the latest instalment of Corporate Bigwig Is Actually Your Friend™'
Loves it 😂
Play your own games Spencer!!!!
This guy is a master of manipulation and double speak. He seems very likeable as a person which is exactly how the strategy works.
Why is the man not allowed to enjoy all games?
First game: Barbie Explorer PS1
Last game: RDR 2
Favourite game: TW3
Game you play the most: Returnal
Game you want to play next: God of War Ragnarök
First game you'd show a caveman: Façade or Indigo Prophecy
@IOI you can't attribute the whole turn around of the Xbox one launch to one man & as for gamepass being the best value in gaming that is entirely subjective & id argue that if you game on pc then epic actually gives the best value by giving away games every month with no charge
@IOI & I'm not entirely sure it would be Jim Ryan's decision about rising game prices if that was the case then surely it would've also been the decision of Phil Spencer to double the price of Xbox live gold before they backpedaled on that
@render lol😂
@TheCollector316 He painted a white knight image of himself and a lot of people are falling for it
@IOI Oh please. he's done nothing but spend MS money. What great first party games has he introduced? Their biggest game Sea of Thieves was well in development before he took over and a number of their studios are managed horribly and launched piss poor games. If he didn't use MS money to buy Bethesda Xbox would have next to nothing to look forward to for another entire year.
People like you don't understand he's not some great guy that cares about the industry, at the end of the day it's all about money. Even previous Xbox execs have come out and talked about how dangerous Gamepass is and the only reason MS is all in is because they can tank the massive losses if it means they can get a massive subscriber base and control the industry years from now. He's done nothing but spend money and introduce harmful ***** like buying up every developer and publisher he can which is absolutely horrible for the industry. It's hilarious how people turn a blind eye to this stuff just because durr Gamepass is cheap durr.
Great idea this!
First game: Radar Rat Race (C64)
Last game: Hunt: Showdown
Favourite game: Can't choose between The Witcher 3 & Bloodborne
Game you play the most: Currently Hunt: Showdown and GT7
Game you want to play next: God of War Ragnarök
First game you'd show a caveman: Detroit Become Human
If it came on November 11.2022.phil spencer would of been upset.haha😄😀.cant wait for another masterpiece.kratos the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.word up son
@4kgk2 Pretty much revitalize the brand, saving it after almost dying with the Xbox One launch, bring a new business model, and his investments on studios will pay off in a few year. And his more costumer friendly policies are great in an industry that's all about monetization.
@IOI - Not that I particularly care for Jim Ryan, but Phil Spencer has lied on more than one occasion too, this is the same guy that said at E3 2018 "We're no longer going to announce games that are more than a year away", keep in mind that was the same year Halo Infinite & Battletoads were announced / teased.
"Single-Player Games don't have the same impact as they once did" during the same year as Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn & Resident Evil 7 were released. No doubt at the time it was clearly damage control for Xbox's lack of Single-Player Story-Driven Games, and then proceeded to backtrack just 6 months after making such a dumb statement.
And let's not forget his most recent most blatant lie that "We're not trying to take games away from PlayStation", not a good look especially when Sony is allowing Bungie to remain multiplatform while Phil is taking Bethesda's games away from PlayStation and then blatantly lying that he's not taking games away from PlayStation.
Phil Spencer lies just as much, if not more than Jim Ryan, but for whatever reason he constantly gets a pass, much like Nintendo often gets a pass for some of their questionable practices.
hes always said good things about playstation, honestly the console war has mostly been an online thing. the new god of war game is going to be great.
First game: Alex Kidd (Master System)
Last game: Ghostwire Tokyo
Favourite game: Resident Evil (Gamecube)
Game you play the most: TLOU: Remaster MP
Game you want to play next: Calisto Protocol
First game you'd show a caveman: Pac-Man
@BartoxTharglod I'm also a tad lukewarm about Ragnarok. I played Norse of War recently and never got too into it (still have to finish it; I was a bit vexed that over 10 hours into the game it only seemed like the halfway point). Not that it was bad, by any means, but the gameplay was kinda ehh to me. It wasn't long before I found myself solely invested for the dialogue — I love Kratos' characterization especially.
So yeah, not EVERYONE is excited for Ragnarok. But, to the OP's credit, it is undeniably one of the most anticipated games this year.
Maybe he can get some pointers and actually make a good game for xbox ,I mean its been a few decades Phil, maybe longer ,I cant actually remember when xbox studios made a good game that didn't have the name halo, gears or forza in the title.
Removed - unconstructive
Nope, can’t even start to care about this blatantly two-faced, toxic dudebro.
@IOI I think gamepass is bad for us long term and he hasn't done anything to build first party in a meaninful way, he's just brought out the checkbook to get rid of third-party publishers that were fine on their own and limiting their potential because some of the could unique PS features like the Dualsense for a better experience than Xbox is capable of without them.
He has helped Xbox as a business, but he's been a disaster for gamers.
This story is basically "Guy who likes games is looking forward to the biggest game of the year." It just so happens that he works for Xbox. I'm sure the head of McDonald's has enjoyed a Burger King or two in the past and Walt Disney I am sure enjoyed movies that his studio didn't make.
He owned a ps5 before his series x. All his followers know his fanboyism is just a ruse to ploy his fanboys. Phil Spencer is a gamer. Good on him
People need to calm down with the Phil Spencer hate and get a life. He's an actual gamer compared someone like Jim who really isn't.
It reminds my of the comparison between Iwata and Furukawa. One was a gamer, the other is an accountant.
I also believe that Phil has improved Xbox for gamers whereas Jim has made PlayStation worse for gamers.
@Gloamin I think it safe to assume that Phil is single handedly responsible for his brands direction. He not just the head of Xbox, he litteraly Microsoft’s entire gaming division CEO. The heads of Bethesda and Activation/blizzard will report directly to him. There is no one really higher up the chain, and any decisions that other Xbox higher-ups decide are ran through him.
Phil Spencer is awesome; and this shouldn’t make anyone sceptical. I play Xbox but if I got a job at Playstation so what? I’m not going to stop playing Xbox and enjoying games that I want to play.
He isn’t just his job, he’s a human being.
@Gloamin They have massive teams, but I'm sure those teams are running everything through Phil for approval. The teams aren't just anything they want.
But it funny you mention the iPhone tho... The iPhone probably wont exist if it wasn't a conflict between Steve Jobs and someone who was working at Microsoft. Basically Steve Jobs being Steve Jobs lead to creation on the iPhone.
@Gloamin I completely agree. I'm lucky enough to have all 3 current gen systems and there are amazing reasons to play all 3.
And again, I agree that Phil and Jim can't take all of the credit/blame for the fate of their respective companies. But as a PlayStation fan myself, Jim's messaging and general attitude doesn't sit well with me. But also being an Xbox fan, I'm massively pleased that Phil has made them relevant and interesting again.
@4kgk2 I love all three, but you really are going to defend the CEO that said that he couldn't see anybody playing classic games on PS1 and PS2? I get it that you need to vigorously defend the brand, but come on....don't throw away your humanity.
@Gloamin The same with Furukawa at Nintendo now. He's a great businessman but I think the last game he played was Operation.
@IOI I think Phil has been great for the industry. With Xbox being a legit competitor again the whole industry benefits. I'm subscribed to gamepass on and off depending on content and don't even own an Xbox console.
@sanderson72 Yo I would love it if phil jumped ship. He actually cares about gaming.
Kim is awesome and beautiful. Umm I mean Phil. Phil I meant.
Stop with that ridiculous cult of personality. I’m sure when GOWR releases you ll have him on the balcony cheering and make all the headlines for no reason again.
This looks fun.
First Game: Mario Bros (NES)
Last Game: TMNT: Shredder's Revenge (PS4)
Favorite Game: Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Game You Play the Most: The Witcher 3/Elden Ring (PS4)
Game you want to play next: Calisto Protocol
First game you'd show a caveman: Visage
@sanderson72 There’s still Shuhei and Cerny. Both real gamers who are passionate about what they do.
@DeepSpace5D That's true, but they are hardly the public face that Sony could do with.
@sanderson72 Fair enough. I think Hermen Hulst is a genuine dude as well, coming from a developer studio in Guerilla. It’s just Jim Ryan that seems like he’s barely touched a controller before.
@DeepSpace5D I can't help it - every time I hear Herman Hulst's name I have an image of Herman Munster! Not the face of Sony!
@Sqush-Pare "Sensible guy, he's no doubt upset his army of incredibly sensitive and irrational Xbots with that comment though."
Everybody in that thread seemed super chill, which for Twitter, is pretty impressive.
@__jamiie what exactly has phil done except cut off access to games ,for gamers ,what has xbox studios given gamers since Phil was put in charge in 2009 ? Surely that's time enough to make at least 1 epic game ,Phil cares about Phil and thats that.
@Gloamin charm or smarm?
@tallythwack "Cut off access to games" Please stop with this nonsense. When Sony buys a studio they're seen as heroes and yet when Microsoft buys anyone they're stopping all gamers from enjoying games. Grow up.
@__jamiie so which studio that Sony has acquired has affected xbox gamers in any way? ,take off those Phil tinted glasses buddy, the only studios that Sony has bought are those that make games predominantly for ps anyway, and you failed to answer my original question ,instead decided to insult ,typical xbox gamer in total denial.
I'm not an Xbox gamer. I own all three systems and can therefore be more impartial than you. Phil has completely revamped the entire brand so that Xbox has relevance in the games industry. There was a point in 2013 where they should have probably left the industry. He has been hugely responsible for rebuilding trust. Game Pass is massive and a great way for people to play next gen games without spending £70 a time. Also, you don't have to buy an Xbox to play Xbox exclusives. PC, phone, tablet and soon to be TV. They're creating more ways to play their games than Sony. Backwards compatibility is huge and again, forced Sony to adapt their offering. Jim once said that nobody wants to play previous gen games because they look terrible. Whereas Phil took a gamble making BC a priority given the lack of standout exclusives on the horizon. Game Pass and backwards compatibility made Sony try to get better. That kind of competition can only be a good thing.
Sony have been outright buying studios since the early 90s because they had no in-house talent to make games. Microsoft are now going bigger than that to ensure they can deliver amazing first party games this gen and next. What's the issue? Would Sony do the same if they could? Absolutely. Didn't they just buy Bungie??? Do Bungie have a stronger track record with Sony or Microsoft???
