Like most Sony games, it looks like God of War Ragnarok will let you pick between 30 frames-per-second and 60 frames-per-second gameplay options on the PS5. A promotional email sent out by UK retailer Shop To, and spotted by Novice Gamer Guides, mentions that you’ll have the choice between “full 4K resolution at a targeted 30fps” or “dynamic resolution upscaled to 4K at a targeted 60fps”. Don’t worry too much about the “targeted” wording, this is just legal language in case there are any minor fluctuations.
The materials sound like they’ve come directly from PlayStation, although we will check in with the platform holder and try to get confirmation of God of War Ragnarok’s graphical options. It’s worth reiterating that these settings will be specific to the PS5 version, so expect both the PS4 Pro and PS4 versions to be capped at 30fps like its predecessor – although the supercharged format will likely push a higher resolution than its base console brethren.
The promotional message also mentions “multidirectional 3D audio” and “immersive haptic feedback with adaptive trigger functionality”. We can’t wait to feel the snap of Kratos’ axe returning to his hand through the DualSense controller. But which visual settings will you be selecting? It’s got to be 60fps, hasn’t it? 60fps all day long
I always go for the 60 fps option, does make it hard to go back to older titles that use less.
I’m not entirely convinced that this is the sort of thing that would require insider knowledge to guess. Kinda figured this would be the case.
40fps VRR mode
Why are they not including VRR mode to provide 40fps mode? Stop releasing these games unfinished and then patching them later to include the VRR option, most times I have already finished them.
Obvs… (it wouldn’t let me just say ‘Obvs’, so I typed this whole bracket-racket)
I’m absolutely shocked
Only care about the PS4 pro version 🤷♂️
@DeanySevigny I’ve been meaning to try out the 40fps mode on ratchet and Spider-Man
Considering what Insomniac and Guerilla have been able to do post launch, this is likely just the starting point.
@Fuzzymonkeyfunk as mate, treat yourself. It's terrific. It's just come to Horizon FE too
I hate that this is now a thing, where we have to choose between resolution or frame rate.
I wish the PS5 could just output 4k at 60fps for everything.
@DeanySevigny just had a quick go of ratchet and horizon. I thought horizon still looked a bit choppy at 40 but ratchet felt much better. Insomniac have been excellent with their multiple gameplay options and performanceRT has been my go to
Really need Santa Monica to give us official info regarding all of this. Very curious about it. 60fps all day....
@GreatAuk This is something that Sony and Microsoft should communicate better to less tech savvy consumers: There will always be a limit. They can target 4k without dynamic upscaling/60hz and even 120hz for every exclusive, but the graphics will take a massive downgrade. Be happy that you at least have a choice.
Or buy a PC.
@GreatAuk Then buy a PC. Putting something at 4k and 60fps isn't something they can easily do with games like this on console unless there's a massive downgrade involved.
@GreatAuk at least you have options. The PS5 does what it can mate.. Not everything can be 4k/60 etc... it takes a lot of horsepower to run these at high specs and high resolution.
@Bismarck I never gamed on PC even though I've been building them for almost 20 years. I was always a console guy.
At the very least studios across the board should give us something in between as a standard option the way Forbidden West now offers.
I'd be satisfied with that.
I’m glad that 60fps modes is the standard this gen at least for PlayStation.
More interesting to me is, will it be God of War again. I don't want this crafting crap like the last game.
60 fps should be expected from now on, but I'm glad to hear it specifically. After getting used to it on the 2018 game, I couldn't go back.
@Nintendo4Sonic I'm just hoping his Blades feel more like they felt in GOW3, my only gripe with the remake was the inferior gameplay to the previous titles otherwise it was excellent.
I wouldn't be surprised if this got the Horizon Forbidden West treatment where more visual features are added after launch. Sony's 1st party games have been pretty good about this.
60fps for me, its not even a choice.
Cool.and i l💖ve the fact that a lot of games are using the game changer haptic feedback and addaptive trigger on the ps5 controller sony PlayStation histories of controllers are the best ever.and god of war gameplay is going to be legendary.word up son
@Juanalf I kinda preferred the new axe, it was satisfyingly realistic. The blades of chaos doesn't look believable, like who the heck has little swords tied to their wrists, just spinning and throwing them round injuring everyone else except themselves.
@TheArt
Lol the dude walks around with a head tied to his arse that talks to gigantic snakes. "Believable" left the building a long time ago
@Digit2021 Mostly likely cause their main focus is on making sure that PS4 and the major of PS5 player have a good experience. 40FPS and VRR is only benefiting a minority of PS5 user who are fortunate enough own a 120hz and VRR capable TV set.
@AstraeaV Yeah but it lowers graphics picking FPS.
Dynamic 4K/60 seems to be the way to go! I don't think there's much difference in Dynamic and Native 4K to justify the 30fps drop
@Atreus97 Yep I know lol. Talking giant snake, returning axe and all, it's fantasy. Just saying the axe feels simple, believable, realistic.
@Snake_V5 It's worth it every time.
Where is 120 fps mode?
@AverageGamer
True, which means it's probably better for all if I just wait until they drop that patch before purchasing. Horizon and Ratchet did a great job implementing it, unfortunately I finished both games without VRR that suits my setup. I prefer quailty mode over 60fps. I might even be lucky in that by the time they do release the VRR update it will actually be added to PS Plus Extra Tier
PS5 having to offer 30fps for a PS4 game really takes the shine off of that $500 expenditure. What does the PS4 run at 15-20fps?😝
@rjejr Should have been a PS5 only game.
Game still runs on the same engine, so you would expect this to be the case. RT-mode or VRR added would be actual news.
Obviously going with 60FPS, previous one still looked terrific with it.
Oh I’m surprised there isn’t more fake outrage.
‘Don’t worry too much about the “targeted” wording, this is just legal language in case there are any minor fluctuations.’
Nice. I applaud Push for trying to educate people a little bit 😅
As usual I will see what I like best and it’s probably easy to switch for photos etc.
But Dynamic resolution is standard nowadays in modern games because it’s just straightforward common sense and usually the best option for developers since PS5 is fast to scale. (I believe)
👍🏻
If you actually paid attention to the article it wasn't spotted by NoviceGamerGuides.
It was spotted by me lol, look at the source they're using in the article, it's literally my own post from NeoGAF.
You're welcome for the news all my fellow fps junkies
Eagerly waiting for the day (and PS console) when "the choice" will no longer be necessary. When we'll be able to enjoy a game on Playstation in full 4k @ 60 or 120fps with full quality graphics options turned on.
I always go with the 60fps option. I don't mind the minor downgrade in visuals for that smooth framerate. Can't wait to see how amazing this game is going to look on my LG C1 OLED! 3D audio & Haptic Feedback also!
It'll be nearly ten years since the PS4's inception and two years into the next gen when this comes out, why are we still holding back next gen games so that a ten year old console can cope with them? My guess is, this is going to end up playing and looking like a large expansion pack from the original God of War on PS5.
@thebizniznizbiz The game was supposed to come out in 2021, but the pandemic delayed everything. This game was never meant to push any boundaries or be PS5 exclusive.
Digit2021 wrote:
Honestly stop buying them at launch and just wait. If you keep buying them like that things will never change. That's on you.
But I feel your pain, I've been there, I stopped buying most games day 1 during the PS4 gen when it became clear the game would be in it's best state 6-12 months later. Only buy a few a year Day 1 now. God or War will be one of those.
@themightyant same here..there are probably only a few games by certain devs where you can pretty much count on it being almost spot on bar a few niggles on release day..anything by activision,EA or ubisoft and you are better waiting for a few months before its better (ubisoft are usually a bit better.)
@AstraeaV Even with graphics being lowered?
@Northern_munkey Exactly. Most Nintendo first party, Sony Santa Monica & Naughty Dog are usually on my Day 1 list. They almost always release polished experiences Day 1.
That doesn't mean they have to be 'perfect', games always released with bugs even on cartridge, and games are a lot more complex now. So a few patches are not only OK but expected. But it's when systems are broken at launch that I get annoyed or features are added later. Or 3 months later performance boosts 10% and it becomes clear it needed a few more months in the oven.
Quite happy to wait a few months for most, but not all, games to be at their best. Some i'm still a little too eager and ravenous.
Easy call. I don’t play games limited to 30 fps. I’ll try out the native 4K mode when it launches on PC. By then I should have a 4090 installed.
@Shinnok789 That day will never come. When PlayStation can output native 4K in 60/120 fps you’ll be presented by a new option like 8K or similar I’m sure.
I hope for a 40fps-Mode at release
@Shinnok789 I’m with you. The whole ‘choices are good’ when it comes to compromising resolution/graphical settings (it’s never just resolution), or frame rate…is starting to become a bit of a pet peeve.
The whole point of a console is that it’s not a PC. It’s a closed box where games should be fully optimised for the hardware. Not rely on ‘a choice’. It doesn’t stop at frame rate or resolution…we’re already seeing this. It’s also graphical options are now a choice…turn ray tracing on/off. Soon we’ll probably be picking our AA of choice. As we step further and further away from the plug and play nature of a console. Cause ‘choice is good’… yet these same people are desperate for these games to no longer be on ps4 too.
I’d much prefer devs just focus on bringing us the very best 60fps version them and the hardware is capable of. I don’t need to have the psychological torment of knowing that whatever cool moment I see there’s the choice available for me to see it looking better but playing worse. That serves no benefit. There’s a term for this for a reason - ignorance is bliss.
Another bow in the cap for a streaming future.
Idk if I just expect too much but you would think in 2022 that 60fps 4K hdr would be the minimum standard? I’m surprised games even get options for 30 fps for better graphics performance today.
I play all my ps5 games at 60fps even if the resolution takes a hit..i have to be realistic in my expectations of what the ps5 can deliver and native 4k@60/120 fps is unrealistic..yeah i could go build a pc for a lot of money (i'm still waiting for people in the past who think they can build a pc for the same amount of money as a ps5 and perform better to show me it) and then wait for sony to port all these new games over in a couple of years so i can find out my expensive pc needs upgrading again sorry i mean play them how "they are meant to be played"..i'm more than happy with my ps5 and i have not regretted getting one..if you are not happy with your ps5 then why are you playing it? Sell it to one of these posters on here who are finding it hard to purchase one..
@Bleachedsmiles I switched to console for this very reason, 60 fps started to become the standard. I’m a PC gamer at heart, still have a high-end PC hooked up to my TV but ironically it’s mostly used for older games.
New games goes to PS5/XSX where I just have one easy choice to make. Older games on PC where I can just crank up all sliders and set native 4K resolution and be done with it.
I got sick of tweaking every little setting. I like the plug and play approach of consoles. But much like you said, sadly I think consoles are moving away from that. Just look at Ghostwire Tokyo or perhaps DMC5.
60fps for me. Will switch over to the other if the game comes with photo mode just to take the photos and then switch back
@dasd2 In 7 years, when the the third remaster/remake is released on the PS6.
@Snake_V5 In a perfect world everything would be 4k/60, but it's just a known thing that every time you hand devs more powerful hardware, instead of making it perform better, they just push the graphics further until it slows to a crawl. Always has been like that.
But yeah, 60fps to me is still worth the graphics drop. When you see it side by side you always feel you're missing out. But if you don't the 30fps gets irritating and the 60 really "looks" better, because in a game, you're always moving. The smoother movement, in motion looks more impressive than the higher res and makes a game feel more "solid". It depends on the display though (a "slow" display, which is really what most people have, actually smooths out the 30fps somewhat which I think is why a lot of people aren't bothered by it. A "fast" display, including everything OLED, can look really stuttery at 30. I have an IPS that has, for an IPS, a very fast update, and 30fps can actually introduce a jitter effect where it actually sort of dances forward and back slightly. 30fps didn't bother me as much on my older, cheaper, slower display, but on my current one it's almost unbearable.
But smooth motion is really what you see when you're actually playing that makes a game look great, more than the detail in stills.
And I used to be one of those people that played everything at 15fps on PC so I could max all the sliders, because I thought resolution and effects looked so much worse if you didn't. But, wasn't really thinking of the whole presentation in motion.
@Northern_munkey @themightyant Everything gaming is backward. Games should be half price at launch for the beta discount, and then gradually appreciate to $60 or 70 or 500 or whatever the kids like paying today, over the first 18 months as the beta is fixed and all content is added. Only gaming does this. Imagine if Honda sold cars, that were missing the radio, heater, and the windows randomly rolled down, all of which was added a few years later after depreciation set in?

Guess you missed the recent news that BMW had introduced a subscription service to rent heated seats already built into your car for £15 per month. LOL
But yes it does seem sorta backwards in gaming, though this can be overstated, the reality is most games do at least launch in a playable state, it's not a beta, they just don't reach their best state for a few months.
For this game I choose resolution. I want to see it in all it's glory.
@Snake_V5 They are never really lowered that much at all. The gameplay is so much smoother. A good example is GTA Vice City Definitive Edition. It's like night and day when switched to performance mode.
By the time I play it they’ll have had a few patches.
I’m not a huge God Of War fan. I’ll wait for a price drop.
I'm a TV *****. What's the difference between hz and fps. I keep reading things which make them sound like they are the same thing. Please explain the difference in layman terms.
Should read D.u.M.b A.s.S
It will need to be 4K glory. I want to see every detail.
I hate having to decide on which mode to play games on now :-/ I bought a home games console & don't want to f-about with all this stuff really :-/ Ok I haven't a clue which mode to pick to
60 fps mode for me! As much as I enjoy 4k content, I'd rather have smooth fps anyday.
@B_Lindz It would be better if it could just launch with these visual options rather than a later patch when the game has been completed
@Discol76 They're related but different. FPS is the number of frames of animation that are being rendered per second by your system or console. HZ is the number of times your monitor or TV refreshes the image on the screen per second. If a game is running at 30fps then that means your PlayStation is rendering 30 images of the game per second. If your monitor or TV is 60hz then that means your monitor can refresh its image 60 times per second; so, if your PlayStation is rendering a game at 120fps and your screen is 60hz then you'll only see a 60fps image with about every other frame of animation not appearing on your screen.
That doesn't mean you need to run out and buy a 4k 120hz monitor, though. That's probably overkill in most instances and it may not even meet your wants or needs. Most systems (and even high-end PCs) can't consistently hit 4k 120fps, let alone 4k 60fps. If you value a high frame rate, go with something with a high refresh rate. If you value image quality, go with 4k. For myself, I don't really care that much about anything above 60fps, but I love high resolution and color accuracy, so I went with a 4k 60hz color-accurate IPS monitor.
In the end, to each his/her own.
@Bismarck The PS5 should always be trying to push boundaries from the last gen, that's the whole point of it, surely? Most brand new titles are 70 nicker to buy now this gen, so what are we paying for?
Nice one. 60fps for me.
Slow motion vs an fps that existed on ps2, what fantastic options lol
Adaptive triggers ? so kratos must put more effort throw blade of chaos !
@Juanalf ......GLAD somebody finally mentions this. GOW 2018/ REBOOT is an excellent game with incredible story but the combat felt like an afterthought even though it is a major part of what you will be doing in game. KRATOS is a God yet the game had him fighting minions and really struggling with them yet in the GREEK games he ws toppling gods and deities. So the combat for me felt bloated as i expected deities and hard as nails characters and KRATOS TO BE A POWEEFUL GOD HE IS. THE AXE WHAT COMPLETE CRAP OF A WEAPON HENCE WHY THE BLADES OF CHAOS GET BROUGHT BACK IN THE 2nd HALF OF THE GAME.
@TheArt .....Who does that..........
Answer: A GOD.
Remember Kratos is a GOD.
@B_Lindz
Thanks for the easy to understand explanation. Much appreciated
