One of the key details from Sony’s quarterly financial report today – which also confirmed that the PS5 has shipped 21.7 million consoles – is that PS5 and PS4 owners are playing less than they were a year ago. The manufacturer noted that total gameplay time is down a sizeable 15 per cent year-over-year for the three month period ending 30th June, 2022.
Now a lot of this decline appears to be focused on April and May, with the platform holder pointing out it saw a three per cent month-on-month increase in June, which itself was down just 10 per cent year-over-year. However, it admitted “this is a much lower level of engagement than we anticipated in our previous forecast”.
The company blamed the deceleration of the overall industry as the reason for the slide, “as opportunities have increased for users to go outside due to a reduction in COVID-19 infections in key markets”. But, unsurprisingly, it’s something the firm aims to address: “We intend to take action to increase user engagement in the second half of the fiscal year, during which major titles including first-party software are scheduled to be released, primarily by increasing the supply of PS5 and promoting the new PS Plus service.”
Sony saw a two per cent reduction in revenue during the aforementioned quarter, which isn’t a terrible result in isolation – although increasing costs meant profit declined by a more significant 37 per cent, with a slump in software and add-on sales to blame. The reality is that the pandemic had a massively positive impact on PlayStation, and the numbers were always going to have to come back down to Earth.

Need more live service games to bump up those numbers, Jimmy!
Tbh there's not been any decent games on PlayStation but looking forward to soul hackers 2 and new saints row
A surefire way to increase engagement would be to get rid of this PS Plus tier system and have it all in one.
Good, bad situations for the company means countermeasures to do better and that's good for us.
People are playing less than they were a year ago when everyone was in lockdown ? Well duh lol
@Relygon thy don't even have one yet and people is malding already 😂
We’d play more if they stopped delaying all the games. The numbers will rise again in 2023 when all the games that were supposed to come out this year are released 😂
I don't play as much as I used to because of rubbish life stuff like work.
Maybe people are buying (and playing) less games because of the energy/cost of living crisis? Not looking like such a great decision to raise the price of games to £70/$70 now, when many people are struggling to heat their homes or feed their families. Gaming is a luxury many may feel they can live without.
Hilarious -
Shortage of consoles to get "engaged" on.
Heatwaves and rising temperatures and freedom from lockdowns equals people getting out more.
Cost of living crisis.
I sometimes wonder if comments like this from Sony indicate if they are on the same planet as the rest of us.
Lower game prices, people will buy more and play more.
@GymratAmarillo No worries, they now have Bungo to sort that out! Oh and Destiny 2 is technically Sony’s now so they do have a live service game, eh.
Certainly not me. I'm gaming more than I have ever gamed in my life (due to my career). When new games come out I usually buy anything I'm interested in.
But a lot of people are struggling. My GF and I were when we lived in an expensive city, so we moved, and we are doing better now, but of course we can only afford our lifestyle when both of us work together. Not an issue.
I mean, last year people were locked down, this year they’re out like normal. 15% isn’t bad really considering
No-one is going to pay £70 for The Last of Us Part 1 and hope that their PS5 will heat their home, Mr. Jim Ryan.
I got married so yeah, alot less gaming time these days. But they really couldn't have thought Lockdown numbers were going to be the norm going forward right?
Great news. Well done fellow humans.
Oh Jim.... How out of touch you are.
Perhaps those lies to sell the Ps5 are catching up to Sony. Or maybe it's the complete lack of communication with your player base. Perhaps charging full price for a cash grab remaster disguised as a remake isn't a good look either. Especially when you look at documents emerging that cite that Sony and ND greenlit that cash grab literally because it would be a source of profit with little financial and resource investment and short development time.... A high return to investment ratio..... Cash grab
Leadership change should be the action taken.
I'm not suprised by this at all. There are so many factors playing into this stat. With the pandemic slowing down in parts of the world and with worldwide inflation, people don't have nearly as much time to game. The supply chain is still in a complete mess. With personal obligations and needing to make money, I have gamed less this year than I have in the past 5. Also, people don't have a lot of extra income to buy games.
It's going to take a stupid amount of time to recover from the past couple of years.
@Relygon you know what? You are absolutely right, if they are going to buy more services as good as destiny and the one from ND is as good as de first TLOU multiplayer, then please bring all the live services 😂
Sony is worried that people spend less time sitting in front of their TVs. Actually, I find this sad.
Well, some peoples might be busy and cannot have gaming time.
Lots of reasons. As stupid as it sounds, for me, I’ve got so many choices that I have a tough time deciding and I either play something I’ve already played a bazillion times or just end up watching YouTube, Pluto, or Tubi. A lot of my PS friends have their machines on, but they’re not playing games. The PS4 and PS5 has become an entertainment system as much as it is a video game system.
If Sony stopped being so anti consumer that would help.
No lock down...the weather is very good for us here in blighty..no great releases..cost of living going through the roof..taxes rising..i could go on but i've got lost epic to play..
Well it's summer here, people are outside and on holiday and there are no lockdowns. As for software sales, I might be tempted to buy 2 good games in quick succession at £50, definitely 1 max at £70
Surely 2019 - 2020 would be the period for comparison.
Personally I don't play as much as I used to, but only because I work and spend the occasional weekend in garden centers now.
If I'm at home and there's nothing else happening, and sometimes when there is, I'm on the PS5.
My two cents: Make Extra and Premium the same tier, then add a new third tier for Crunchyroll.
@Smiffy01
I think everybody knows those are the reasons, including Sony. They still have to say “we are planning to do something about it”, which is all they said really.
@Relygon @GymratAmarillo technically Destruction All-Stars is a Sony live service. Just not a particularly popular one.
Edit: Gran Turismo 7 is one too, I guess.
@thefourfoldroot1 Lol our gov't been spouting that line for past 2 years
Tbf they have delivered more high quality games (quality over quantity) than most platforms since the launch of PS5. I think this "slump" was inevitable. As the article says, this is going back down to earth. I think the PS5 has certainly given me a magnificent first couple years instead of just collecting dust. How they address the single player/live service balance going forward will be crucial.
I mean when is people getting up and going outside a bad thing Jim Bob?
I hate terms like “engagement numbers.”
If you release more good games people will engage more bruh. This ain’t rocket science.
@Voltan that game for me was the equivalent of Knack or days gone for ps4, it was an idea that had to fail to understand it isn't as easy as just "make whatever"
@Smiffy01
The US government is telling us “this is not a recession.”
I’m like bruh, a bag of potatoes were about 2/3rds cheaper two years ago.
Now you gotta refinance your house to buy some dang fries.
They can get out of here with that nonsense.
@Notoriousmakavel This cant be understated. Alot of PS5s are sitting in Garages of scalpers.
were out of lockdowns and restrictions so it should be no surprise people arnt staying in to play games as much as they were during a pandemic.
loads of companies seem to be doing this expecting growth to just continue after the massive boost they got during covid.
I still use my PS5 almost regularly. However I also do like to play golf and go fishing every now and then too. You know, summer stuff! I'm sure once it starts getting colder it will get more engagement.
Cost of living going up, no more lockdown and tbh, lack of big releases since what, Elden Ring/Horizon? doesn't help either.
People wedging the last of us into every single comments section really is becoming a bore.
I'd play more if I didn't need a job.
Jim Ryan wants more live service games and more unnecessary remakes, that will definitely help keep those numbers up.
Stands to show how many were supposedly "working" from home during the pandemics, eh?
Now the handhelds may get an increase in sales, useful to pass the time while commuting to/from the office.
Perhaps Sony should do a comparison between the number of Steam Deck and/or Mobile phone players and PS players in this time frame... they may find the reason.
@Voltan That’s right! Forgot about those. Destiny 2 was the first one that crossed my mind.
As a matter of fact I have never played those games. I’m terrible at racing games.
I personally have not touched by ps5 in months. Its a combination of getting burned out of playing daily last year and having to actually go to work instead of working remote. I thought Horizon or elden ring would get me back in the groove but i found myself forcing myself to play. Im definitely getting back into gaming when ragnarok releases
@blkmagic316 so instead of having a lower price tier and a higher price tier you just want the higher price tier?
Gotta love how some are using this story as "evidence" for their "$70, remake, live service, lack of games, scalpers, being anti consumer" repetitive topics against Sony. Spoilers it's non of those things. As others have said, it's the down turn since the Covid boom.
@PhantomMenace84 the issue with this , is they are clearly busy working on games. a lot of them haven't been announced yet because they have no idea when they are going to be ready for release and people complained they showed games too early. also people complained they don't want the developers under a time crunch either. so you can't really have it both ways in having games come out quickly with out needing to time crunch to get the game out to the public. but imo it's pretty exciting because they have those games we haven't even seen yet that will come out eventually.
I have been playing my PS5 more than ever lately, but Sony making the system more appealing to customers can only be a good thing for everyone.
@AdamNovice those people have no one to blame but themself. there is a pretty clear road map of when games come out. they ran out bought a ps5 , so they can sit on their pc or phone on websites to complain they don't have anything to play on it.
Personally i'm not as engaged or interested in gaming right now as i used to be so im less inclined to jump on in the evening once kids are in bed. Part of that is down to a generally poor year for new releases, but also its down to Sony's general lack of interest in engaging with it's customers. I've little to feel hyped for this year - excluding GOW of course
Just give me VR2 and FF16 and I promise I won't leave my couch for weeks, bro.
@twitchtvpat Either a single middle priced tier or be more transparent for newer and more casual players about the service.
Most of those ps5 are still stuck with scalpers, there's nobody to play them. Also new ps plus sucks. Buy square enix, problem fixed
Elden Ring broke at least 15% of gamers and they are still recovering under a blanket with all kind of shakes and involuntary ticks. To be fair 😁
But Goddddd I hate big business, and forecasts like this. Hey capitalism, it isn't a failure if you don't make more money every year, as long as you're still making enough money to pay the salaries of the staff and cover production costs and investment you're fine (yes, yes, the inflated executive wages too)
We have no sympathy for you Jimbo, and we know we are just juicy wallets and sheets of statistics to you anyway 👍
@Smiffy01 Like most companies with more money than sense no their on their on little world😁
This could be a good thing. This might get the ball rolling on getting back to the early days of ps4 where there where alot more events and just news in general. I don't mind the playing it close to the chest but i have to say as some one whos been around video games all their life This Era has been the least exciting due to the radio silence these company's have decided go with .
This is Jim Ryan's PlayStation and I haven't been impressed at all so far with his 'leadership' so I'm cautiously optimistic what the response will be. Only reason I have a little hope the reaction here will be good for PS5 owners is that Sony relies quite a bit on the PS brand.
Personally haven’t been playing much since finishing HFW. However have a lot games pre ordered for the holiday season. Will definitely be playing a lot more in the coming months and into next year
@GymratAmarillo I like how you are optimistic, but i am afraid all this says is they want to deploy more live services to a saturated market. shrugs
@Max_the_German You find it sad that Sony are disgruntled people aren't doing what makes them money? Please...
I’ll be interested how Stray, F1 Manager and Two Point Campus sell and their engagement figures: they are the very few under £50 games and if they are hugely successful I really hope it encourages Sony to drop the quite frankly ludicrous £70 games in the current times. It won’t help.
@BartoxTharglod
I know man. I’m just pissed.
My country can put a Tomahawk IV cruise missile through a house window from 1200 miles away.
But we can’t even figure basic economics to mitigate financial fallout.
It’s infuriating.
Lol. Q2 and q3 are dry.
This report is for investors rather than fifa players and like all investors they expect year on year growth. It’s just explaining why that isn’t the case. Nothing to get worked up about
Compared to last year? How about a 5-10 year graph of engagement hours? A one year increase or decrease of anything is just that, one year.
@OrtadragoonX They could, they just don't want to.
That’s what happens when less awesome games are released and more and more remakes, remasters, live service and online only games are instead. People pay the big bucks for games that are truly loved and are amazing not are ok or really good. This gen is really slim pickings so far. Engagement and $$$ spent will reflect this and will continue in a downward direction until games the most gamers want are frequently being released. Time was there was a really good game released every month or if not every other month. Sometimes a couple per month even. Now you can go 6 months without a legitimate AAA GOTY contender being released and while people are still buying out of desperation for something new to play they’re buying less and the longer it goes on the closer till they all but give up and stop purchasing until a game on the same level as Elden ring, horizon, TLOU (new, not remade), Single player offline elder scrolls etc etc comes out
This was inevitable really especially after lockdowns ended and the engagement time would naturally be less for gaming ,sony,Microsoft, nintendo etc etc all pretty much made a packet out of covid so they surely can't be surprised that people want to do other things for a change ha ha anyway I'm still using my ps5 quite abit not as much as during lockdown though but when autumn and winter kick back in and games start rolling again ,the engagement will be back
@Notoriousmakavel
Exactly. Shot themselves in the foot there
I think at the moment there is a lot going against video games in general.
Cost of living increase, it’s real and costs me monthly. One example people leaving certain subscription services etc.
Similar to above £70 a game day one release.
Chip shortages, especially PS5 in terms of shop stock.
Covid is sort of died down let’s go outside and do things we couldn’t do during covid lockdowns.
It’s summer the weathers good, lets have bbq go out etc. summer holidays.
Gaming in general if you have been around for years like me, is there anything really new or just reimagined.
Just some thoughts.
Too bad (for them) Elden Ring isn't a Sony exclusive, 'cos that's all I play every waking hour I'm off work (I don't even think I'm halfway done, story-wise)
I don't give a flying flamingo what Mr Ryan thinks, I'll play PlayStation when I can be arsed. Didn't help that Sony twisted PD's arm to shaft the player base over GT7 and they're insistent on releasing re-hash after re-make instead of expediting something a bit newer. I've got more than enough to do with my time than sit on my arse playing PlayStation day in, day out.
Honestly kind of smiled reading this. First, seeing Jim Ryan eat his arrogant words is beautiful, second, this hasn't been a great year for big games so we all played less instead of forcing ourselves to play crap and live service hamster wheel games.
@Nem I mean the market will never be free for anything anymore unless they create something new (and then Riot makes a ripoff 1000% more successful) but at least if the games are good enough to be played I'm ok with that, for example destiny 2 isn't as near as good as destiny 1 but there is always people to play with and I personaly enjoy the game. At the end of the day if those games fail and they close one or two years after release it's not like they are going to stop making games, they are going to still make the things that are making money. That's why I'm not worried at all with all the service ***** either from Ryan or people who think this means less single player games, if it fails he's gone and we win, if the games are good we also win. All stars is a good example, that game failed hard, they can't do just the minimum and expect a lot of money, they invested money in fall guys and genshin impact they have to know what's better.
@PhantomMenace84 like i said game releases aren't exactly top secret most people with the internet know what games are coming out right? im sorry im just confused why some one would buy a ps5 and then complain they have nothing to play on it. they are clearly making plenty of games , so to say , " they have nothing to release" , is just foolish.
I still play .but the last couple of years i been. Chilling like a villain on YouTube and i been watching tv a lot especially those old 📺 tv sitcoms comedy.and a lot of retro movies.and movies on demand and Netflix and other stuff.but yeah i l🖤ve retro stuff.so sometimes i bee watching stuff when i was young.the nostalgia is extremely high with me.wwf wrestling.yo mtv rap.rap city the basement.v the final battle. Johnny arcade. Video power.nick arcade gamepro.i bee watching old school rap music reaction on you tube or retro r and b and pop music reaction.texas bushman.blastphamoushd.etc.its fun word up son
I am definitely playing less than last year. It’s not a shortage of game options for me though. I still have plenty in the backlog. It’s all about the world situation, free time being the limiting factor.
“We intend to take action to increase user engagement..."
Why? Maybe its a good thing that people are playing less and hopefully going outside more... Oh right, all these businesses care about people's mental health only to whatever extent that makes them stacks.
could it be that the ps5 is underwhelming? or that jim ryan is still in charge ??
not to mention that PC has been the wave for a while now . a lot of people playing on PCs now than ever . even people that i would’ve never thought would ever game on a computer has a gaming pc
It’s impossible to play a console I can’t buy, isn’t it? 🙄
Someone! Quick! Another pandemic! They are going OUTSIDE! Ignore the needless deaths! Our projections must be accurate!!!
Promote soulless games as a service free to play littered with microtransactions. Charge £70 for your own games and include microtransactions. Design a console with tiny storage.
Great if you are a casual gamer who plays FIFA and Cod. Terrible if you play loads of games. Ive Been spending 95% of my time on Xbox due to Gamepass and MS rewards, just bought Rogue Legacy 2 and paid nothing but my own time.
Microsoft are guilt of adding microtransactions to their games, arguably worse than Sony. But Gamepass and MS rewards mitigates that somewhat.
I just don't get why Sony wouldn't develop smaller scale games like sly cooper, gravity rush in-between big AAA game releases. But instead, they went to live service games to keep milking people's time and money and forgot about people who put them on the map in the first place.
“as opportunities have increased for users to go outside due to a reduction in COVID-19 infections in key markets” - nah it's just that many people and their governments in these key markets have stopped caring.
@BartoxTharglod definitely not what I voted for 😁
Ive started pretty Horizon Forbidden west, Miles Morales, Returnal, Gran Turismo 7, and several other PS5 games since I oicked one up in February of this year. And ive not finished any of them. They’ve all been disappointing. Im not sure what im looking for on this new machine but what I’ve played so far has not impressed. The one saving grace of the PS5 was Astros Playroom. That was charming and colorfull and just super fun! I hope it gets better from here. But to be fare everything i got the Xbox Series X for (Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Game Pass) has all heen a let down as well. So I guess it might just be early days, but this generation has not been what i hoped it would be.
Poor Kevin Butler.
Lack of PS5 supply + adding more expensive tiers to PS Plus probably didn't help.
Charging £70 for a game was clearly a bad idea and was only done because of greed. Lower your prices and il start buying more. And Sonys messaging so far this generation had been truly awful, its just constant bad news, live service and TV TV TV TV
Worst games line up in the 40 years I have been playing games! Nothing but cut and paste sequels, or games that aren't for me. There has been a few good ones. I consider my ps5 a waste of money 🙁
Well since the ps5 has been out since 2020 and there's like 5 ps5 console exclusive games out there is an absolute joke. I've had my ps5 for over a year and have not played a ps5 console exclusive because the ones that are released don't interest me very much at the price they are going for. I'm certainly not as engaged as I was with this anti consumer service
"We intend to take action to increase user engagement" What they going to do exactly, shoot out wires from the usb ports to keep us in place? Bit of a weird comment
But like others, life getting back to almost normality after a 2 year lockdown and now cost of living crisis for most of the world, you can best believe people aint going to be spending 70+ quid on a game when they're struggling to pay energy bills etc
"people are playing our console less than we thought because they are going outside, and we are going to fix that" is probably the most soulless, corporate thing I've ever heard.
They'll have another shock in a decade or so when they realise there's less kids to play their games too. Which ironically, will be a direct result of people like this, who have taken away the work force's time and money to have kids.
I'm guessing the "whales" and "real fans" will end up having to pay to make the losses in profits.
People are back to work now rather than working from home or on furlough
The company blamed the deceleration of the overall industry as the reason for the slide, “as opportunities have increased for users to go outside due to a reduction in COVID-19 infections in key markets”. But, unsurprisingly, it’s something the firm aims to address:
No, it is the fact that nothing really "Next Gen" has come out for the PS5 and remakes just keep getting pushed down our throats. The PS5 has become the re-issue/re-master machine, and less of a next gen machine.
@Kriandis have you heard the term diminishing returns and tbf some ps5 games would never run on last gen software so
I’ve never seen so much complaining.
I recently got a PS5 and it’s honestly one of the most impressive pieces of technology I’ve ever used. I’ve got Ratchet and Clank, Spider Man, Returnal, Ghost of Tsushima Iki Island Horizon Forbidden West Stray and not to mention looking forward to The Last of us Part One and God of War Ragnarok coming out soon. This has been one hell of a generation so far compared to Microsoft where they have yet to show anything when it comes to games. Wake up people
@blkmagic316 that wouldn't work mate, people will not pay and/or can't afford to pay it.
Not everyone wants everything that's included hence the tiers so people can choose what features they want.
If nothing change about these ridicilious pricetags of games, i forsee a mayor crash in the console industry.
Gamepass and ps plus and premium is just doing more damage, because people focus on playing old games(bored very quick), while they should be playing nextgen titles and be happy, especialy in combination with deals. The flow you normaly have with nextgen consoles is just horrible.
End COVID lockdown consequence. Nothing mysterious about it.
No need for drama.
There's many factors why people play less than they did a year ago but only one of those factors is a reasonable thing for Sony to control. Namely the game lineup, since April the PS lineup has been very quiet. I think a May release would've benefitted HFW (and the PS lineup pacing) more than February.
This comment section is on fire with wild theories. I'll give my old man rant, blaming gen z's for not having the mental capacity of playing anything longer than a tiktok vid 😂
@Grimwood it's not though is it? PS plus essential Is like 2-3 games a month. Gamepass had 3 games added on Friday and more Tuesday. They add about 14 or so games every month.
I'm a Sony advocate, been on this site for years. But they have dropped the ball big time. I'm not just referring to GP either.
1.5 years after launch and the PS5 still can't be found anywhere except some sculptures at an outrageous price. Heck, it's even difficult to find a ps4 at a legit store recently. Isn't it the problem's core? If I had a ps5 I would play much more, it's frustrating
Why would they be shocked that engagement went down when comparing to a period of time that was not the natural state of the world that heavily favored indoor activities on your own or with your family?
The only comparison that is valid is to 2019.
Speaking just for myself, I've not bought a day 1 exclusive since the PS5 launched, refuse to pay £70, so I'll either do it if I've got gift vouchers etc lying around from Christmas/birthdays, or wait for a sale. Hell, even with sales they're often sitting above £50, which is ridiculous sometimes. There's games like Returnal and Sackboy that I would have gone for, but because of that I still haven't done so.
Again, I'm just speaking for myself, but can't imagine I'm the only one.
Yeah, there were more restrictions last year. And now, with inflation and energy costs, it's taken away from extra spending. I don't have as much time, but still really like Forbidden West, Shredders Revenge, and Stray.
So they want to develop a new Covid strain to boost engangement ? This Jim Ryam guy in the photo totally looks like a guy whod do it.
Not many interesting games being released lately on ps5. I turn on my ps5 maybe once a week, while I game daily on Switch.
Maybe they should try ACTUALLY releasing some games for Pete's sakes....Ive been CONSTANTLY checking the new games section....and there's been hardly any PROPER games released.....it's just loads of same same anime s**t!!!! All this so called "dating sim" games....that's all I ever seen..... those and other anime s**t.....it's ridiculous ..... release some ACTUAL games .....and NOT the half a** ones you been making!!!!
Maybe you should play some playstation. I bet he doesn't even knows from where it switch on and off........and maybe you should make new interesting games than the remakes of the remastered...... Maybe you should stop doing games like games 20 years ago and give us some next gen games otherwise I will sell my ps5 and stick with the psone. They make 3-4 next gen games every year, something like that and more than 200 garbage games which you can play easily on a smartphone.
Tbh I burned myself out on games during the pandemic which culminated with elden ring. After pouring something like 300-400 hours into that I'm kind of done with big fancy games for a while. Have just been chilling with some ace attorney and AI: Somnium Files.
Sony aims to stop people going outside and enjoying life away from a TV screen. 😂😂😂
Also, the entire world is suffering from rising prices across the board so maybe don't act like gaming should be everyone's number one priority. Read the room Sony.
@Grimwood Gamepass has closer to 300 games and mostly a lot of solid games. Unlike PS Now which had a lot of filler. Listen Grim, I'm not for 1 minute saying Xbox are that much different to Sony. It's just that until recently with the new ps plus tiers, Gamepass was a better value proposition. And there are more first party games than we give MS credit for.
But for me playing Playstation for 6-7 years it's actually been nice seeing all the Xbox games. So with the lack of games and tiny SSD, ridiculous stick drift and pivot to games as a service I'm more inclined to play on Xbox this gen. As I mentioned Ive bought a years Gamepass ultimate, gave £10 to charity, Bought Rogue Legacy 2 and a couple of throw away games to pad out my library and all it cost (my wife for my bday) was 3 months Gamepass, due to Microsoft rewards. It's like a pseudo achievement score but you can get vouchers from it. With the cost of living crisis, it pays for itself then some. And if you game similarly to me, having both systems, then it's an easy decision to main on the Xbox. It's quieter, looks better and gives you money.
@TrickyDicky99 I definitely agree with your point on the current status of this generation, it’s been really slow. I guess I was kinda lucky to wait and be able to play everything available now at a decent price. I know the games do the talking but the PS5 in general as a system is amazing and I’m excited for 2023 when PS5 only games start releasing in higher quantities
How are industries surprised that 2 years had artificial increases is certain industries and now discretionary spending is in the toilet? Every cashier at Walmart could have told these MBAs everything they seem to not understand.
Quality of games intentionally dropped across the board for the past several years
“What went wrong?”
£70+ per game will do that Jimbo.
I have access to multiple Telegram groups where scalpers are still sitting on 20 to 30 Disk Ps5's and they are still selling them at £600-£650, granted they aren't selling as fast but they are still selling.
The cost of living crisis is a killer, everything has gone up in price and money has stayed the same, this winter if it does get seriously cold, I will have to make choices and gaming isn't a priority when I've got kids that are still cold even with blankets and clothes on.
@BritneyfR_ee So the people that make and sell these games shouldn’t have the money to feed their family? The cost of games needed to go up with inflation and increased costs. Basic economics. How long were games selling for 60? 10+ years? Imagine not getting a raise for 10 years and having people on forums complaining about you making too much money?
@4RunnerX and how much has the gaming industry grown in the past 10 years? Massively I suspect. More people than ever are playing games, which means more sales and more money. Add to that online subscriptions, microtransactions, season passes, dlc and the industry is raking it in. I read an article recently that stated the gaming industry makes more money than the movie/music industry combined. So forgive me if I don’t get out the violin.
@Notoriousmakavel so less people are playing on their PS5s now because of scalpers? How do scalpers prevent people from playing less on their PS4s and PS5s?
I mean, those exclusives are only going to be played for so long. And with constant game delays, the time between said exclusives widens.
I love Sony exclusives; but not much keeps me going back to PS5 until one releases (my Series X is my "everything else" box). Once I finish the story, the game is deleted and goes back on the shelf.
I haven't touched the system in months since I decided that Nioh wasn't for me. I do still need to get Horizon Forbidden West, though (it will have to take a back seat to Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - my Switch hasn't been touched since I finished Metroid Dread about a week or two after launch),
It's cause I'm choosing to play my PS3 instead. Imagine that Jim Ryan. Imagine that.
Jimbob wondering why he can't squeeze more money out of gamers. Typical of this New Playstation era.
Bring back Layden and House - people who actually gave a ****!
Team Green is looking more and more appealing and I never thought I'd say that.
It's almost like a lot of people were confined to their houses last year, or something.
Unsurprising engagement is low. Sony added a ton of people who weren't gamers as they stayed home during COVID and needed something to do so they bought a PS/XB/Switch. Now they're back, out and about and not playing games.
You won't engage them anymore than you do, because gaming was merely a diversion. They're already gone and their consoles are collecting dust.
@BritneyfR_ee nah it's cause the store is full of *****. Nothing decent ever comes out
So they're going to increase engagement by convincing us to sign-up for a subscription-based game rental service where you don't own anything. No thanks...
@Eran not sure what country you’re in, but in the US they drop PS5’s every week somewhere. Anyone in the US that doesn’t have one yet can’t afford it or doesn’t really want one. They sat available for purchase on Sony Direct for hours last week.
Biggest barrier for most is the inflated game pricing that is unequal across territories.
@TheGrizMan It's not like you can go to some shop / browse online, pay and take one home.
You have to either put a lot of effort and try to pick one in the few seconds it's available (I always failed - sites went down or had errors on the way on stock arrives) or pay an outrageous price to some unofficial seller.
This is not normal and I'm sure it hurts the PS business. But hey I guess we should all say thank big thank you that we're not being forced to be locked down at our houses anymore (for now) and stop nagging about having to pay x2 for products.
Same as everyone, games are too expensive. Too many "remasters" trying to make you play the same game over 3 generations... Most of the big studios have got lazy and boring. Elden ring was the last game I bought and I reckon I can live off stuff I've neve played on PS Plus for the time being. Will still get the occasional indie but the big studios are doing nothing that interests me. All "play it safe" type stuff.
Maybe it's time to lower prices back to $60
I'm still gaming every weekend when I can! Sadly I work a full time job so my free time is limited.
I think Sony should give some of us a Ps5 for free! And here’s why since the PS5’s release I’ve been to every store over a 100 times but been told they’re all sold out I’ve witnessed people leaving the store with more than one PS5 console! And one day I saw a man leaving the store with 10 of them!! I asked them if they had any for sale and they had enough nerve to lie to me and say they’ve not had any for awhile so I thought I would ask him if he would sell me one and I’d give him $50 more then he paid and this Jerk/Scalper had enough nerve to tell me he wanted $2,000 for one!! So I tried getting one online as well and Several times the PS5 would be available I would click pay now or add it to my shopping cart and immediately went to pay and as soon as I did it would say sold out! Because the Scalpers are using SCALPER BOTS to purchase all of them! But what’s confusing me is how are they allowed to purchase what I had in my cart and was right there getting ready to purchase it! Why are These stores, online Retailers & Sony letting them get away with this? I’ve had this happen around 20 times online and My Son’s old PS4 Disc drive was broken and we had to get a new one so I told him to continue using the PS4 until The PS5 was released and I would save up and purchase him one! And I preordered the PS5 only to be told They didn’t receive any! I believe I was lied to because someone who worked for the store either purchased them all or had or knew someone to purchase them all and everyone who preordered them got screwed out of them! That was November 2020 and it’s been almost 2 years and still no PS5! My son is paralyzed from the waist down and is in a wheelchair! So he plays his PlayStation his mom/my wife was hit head-on by a drunk driver and she and my son was in the car that night my wife died in the wreck and he was our only child! So yes I spoil my son a little he’s 11 and doesn’t ask for much he mostly asks for games! But his PS4 finally broke completely and I had to get him another PS4 because of these scalpers and I refuse to pay $2000 or more for a PS5! Now we don’t have the money to pay for a PS5 because I had to get him another PS4! Also I signed up to be notified by Sony and Playstation when a PS5 was available and I never got notified! So you see why I think Sony should give some of us a PS5 for ”FREE” they at least owe us this for the trouble, wasted fuel & frustration some of us had to go through!
Also Sony maybe you would have more gamers playing on a PS5 if you would start prosecuting and arresting these scalpers especially the ones who are using the bots to illegally purchase and obtain all of the PS5’s!
@TheGrizMan or should we call you TheScalper! What your saying is a straight out lie! A lot of us can not get our hands on a PS5! Because the Scalpers are buying up all the PS5 stock by using bots and people like me who has one and was ready to pay for it was pushed out by these bots and these Scalpers ended up with our PS5’s! So you can stop you lying now!
@CardyM Because they’re selling the PS5’s for 3 times more then they paid around $2000 and The scalpers are using scalper bots to purchase all the PS5 stock and average people cannot get their hands on one without paying the scalper that $2000! So to answer your question Duh!!!
Right because PS5 game sales are nonexistent right now because no one but scalpers actually has a PS5? You'd think if scalpers were unable to unload the ones they have they'd either stop buying or lower their price, right?
So either people are getting them their hands on them themselves or they're getting them from scalpers. Either way people have them. If they didn't and PS5 game sales were low because no one actually has a console, Sony would be taking more drastic steps to keep scalpers away, right? Duh!!!
