Tokyo Game Show 2022 has opened its official website, which confirms a whole bunch of exhibitors, including a number of heavyweight publishers. Said publishers will be part of the 'General Exhibition', meaning that they're going to have a relatively significant presence during the event.
However, going off this initial list, it seems as though Sony won't be at the show in force. Neither Sony Interactive Entertainment or PlayStation are listed under 'General Exhibition'. Sony Interactive Entertainment does show up further down the exhibitors page, but it's filed under the 'Indie Game Corner', which we can only assume is a section of the showfloor dedicated to indie titles and developers. Curious.
Anyway, here's a quick list of the event's biggest publishers, relevant to PlayStation:
- Konami
- THQ Nordic
- Capcom
- Koei Tecmo
- Square Enix
- SEGA / Atlus
- Bandai Namco
This year's Tokyo Game Show runs from 15th September to the 18th September, and it's all but guaranteed that we'll be getting updates on a lot of upcoming Japanese games. That said, TGS isn't the juggernaut that it used to be. Especially when it comes to announcements that are PlayStation-related, many Japanese publishers have adopted a more Western-focused approach, and so TGS no longer presents the best opportunity to make headlines.

Pretty poor though that sony won't be attending a big gaming event on their own doorstep yet Microsoft are
@UltimateOtaku91 Pretty sure it's been like that for awhile now
@UltimateOtaku91 why would Sony waste money when they probably have they own event in September.
I hope if ATLUS is planning on announcing Persona 6 sometime this year for the anniversary, that they do it here.
@4kgk2 their own event is just a digital showcase yet TGS is an in person event for members of the public to play games at exhibits, chance to maybe show off psvr2 to the public and God of war or forspoken.
This would be huge news if it was still 1995
I would love to get a Virtua Fighter 6 announcement from Sega!
I probably won't bother watching it... not that Sony has something up their sleeve of interest but my gaming time is severely limited these days.
@JudgeDredd the question would be, people from japan remember sony is a japanese company? Because they don't buy ***** 😂 and if they aren't buying why would a company waste money showing games they aren't interested in. And at the end of the day Sony is doing actually the best move here, be there showing indies.
Capcom show me dragon dogma 2.word up son
@UltimateOtaku91 my dude you know japanese people just don't care, they just want to play minecraft, apex legends and whatever is released on the switch
Sony helped the founding of Genshin Impact back in the day and then showed it as part of their indie section in a chinese expo and now it's a money maker.
Sony actually caring about indie devs in Japan is more than "limited" i would say.
Konami does what Sonydont. That a low, low blow lol.
@GymratAmarillo the only western game that Japanese will play is Call Of Duty
@anoyonmus
Don't forget Ghost of Tsushima!
I'll definitely be watching the recordings when I come back home from my vacation that week.
Planning to go media silent while I'm away.
@TheCollector316 that too.
@NEStalgia they gotta show more Bomberman 2.
Not gonna happen but I'd love for Konami to show Suikoden some love.
@UltimateOtaku91 PlayStation moved their head offices to San Matteo, California in 2016 so is it more surprising they don't attend this or E3?
Makes no difference to me. If you have something to show then show it, if you don't then don't. No need to attend these annual events unless there is actually something to show which is coming out soon.
Its not even news at this point, Sony and Nintendo are not attending such events and theres no expectation that this will change.
Whilst it matters for those of us who follow these companies every move, its quite clear such shows are irrelevent to the huge majority of consumers. Such absences will not affect their buisness.
(Saw Konami from the list)
Dance Dance Revolution on PS5, please.
Nothing new here, Sony has been going like this for quite a while now, plus I don't think they have anything to show other than that co-dev worplace they helped to fund.
Tbh I need a break from Sony anyway. Their first party releases have been incredible and I need to address my third party backlog.
That's expected since playstation is a california company now.
I'm looking forward to what smaller companies like Idea Factory may announce. I hope KT show more of their new chinese themed game.
@playstation1995 I'd be very surprised if they had anything beyond concept art for dogma2 at this stage.
Line up sounds good with the best of the best studios, so the lack of Sony and Nintendo shouldn't sting.
@anoyonmus they really embraced apex legends
Well apart from Wanted Dead and Wo Long, I have 0 expectations so I can only be surprised 🤷
@GymratAmarillo well apex is on switch though
Even tho it is kinda sucky on it but it’s still apex
@themightyant pretty sure that the Japanese don’t really care about God of War
