If you’re still using your PS3 as a media centre, then you should probably be aware that Crunchyroll is closing down on the console. Despite Sony now owning the streaming service, the company is ceasing support for a number of older devices – including the ol’ Triple, as well as the Xbox 360 and Wii U. RIP to all three!
A statement said: “Attention PS3 players: on August 29th, 2022, the Crunchyroll app will no longer be available on the PS Store and existing users will no longer be able to use the app.”
To be fair, the PS3 is over 15 years old now, so it’s had a good run. Of course, you’ll be able to continue using Crunchyroll on both your PS5 and PS4, so it’s not necessarily the end of the world. If you’re still using the app on your PS3, though, you’ve got a handful of weeks to make alternative arrangements.

Surprised it's taking this long, thought the ps3 would have been obsolete years ago
I'll never forgive Sony for this
all 3 people will care
Does Netflix still work on PS3? I wonder how many apps even support PS3 anymore
Here's your digital only future. The man is just gonna turn off their services, effectively bricking your console.
It's been terrible anyway, doesn't load shows, but the ads play perfectly.
@feral1975 Ain't that always the way!
@Milktastrophe I mean, Crunchyroll is a digital service anyway. It's not like there's an "offline" Crunchyroll to enjoy.
Well, I guess there is if you have a huge DVD collection, but you get what I mean.
I think I tried Netflix a year ago and it worked. Had it as my US content device for quite a while. Still have that clunky huge remote with the Spiderman font.
Beats me why someone would spend a similar amount of money back then for a dedicated Blu-ray player.
"PS3 anime fans"
Is there another kind of PS3 fan?
@Milktastrophe
It's a digital streaming service. That's all streaming services. Also no Playstation console as of yet requires an online connection to play physical games or digital games you have sitting on your drive.
How many people are still using a ps3 for it? Let alone anything else outside of playing games
@ShogunRok I'm sure it was a mutual break up.
@tameshiyaku A simple Bluray isnt that expensive is it?
I still watch Jojo on the Vita app. If you install the ITLS-enso plugin you can open the app. Then before watching anything, go into settings and press the Terms of Service button, wait for it to load, then exit and watch whatever you want. If you don’t do that step, it will give you a video player error and not play the episode. I don’t know why loading the TOS fixes it, but it does!
@feral1975 doesnt load well on any platform the app is a ***** show.
Seems suspicious to me. A sony owned company "crunchyroll" removing support for its older platform "ps3". Are they trying to say "if you dont upgrade to ps4 or ps5 forget crunchyroll".
Sounds like some fat money bags persons idea considering even most older mobiles are still supported. Ps3 is much more powerful then some of the most recent mobile phones. Yea so suspicious cash grab.
@Milktastrophe thats so true lol
netflix, amazon prime and youtube still work on a ps3
@Flaming_Kaiser there were enough as expensive as a ps3 at launch, but I remember later down the line them averaging around 300€. By then the PS3 was much cheaper as well, which also included streaming services. That was long before TVs and disc players became "smart".
@Gh05tm4ch1n3 I doubt that’s the motive but yes it will be a financial decision. I’d say it more about saving money. You can just use the app on your phone or any smart tv can download the app… so yeah I very much doubt anyone would suddenly upgrade a console because of this one sole app. Lol
@tameshiyaku mate I remember how expensive blu-ray players were when the ps3 launched it was a great bonus feature much like the ps2’s ability to play DVDs
Initially thought Cruncyroll was closing down altogether.
No big deal, PS3 came out 16 years ago. I don't expect my 16 year old phone to keep apps updated, so why would I expect this?
Regardless both the Crunchyroll and Funimation apps are 100% awful and need a complete rebuild. Hopefully stopping supporting older hardware speeds up this process.
There are tons of other options to use with Crunchyroll. Not a big deal IMO.
@themightyant Agree. There are some good things on both apps. Now that both are owned by Sony they need to merge the good features under one app and build more from there.
@themightyant CrunchyRoll app definitely still has a long way to go. I still wish they had merged everything CrunchyRoll into Funimation, instead of the other way around.
@Flaming_Kaiser
Bluray players were way more expensive back when the PS3 was still relevant. A significant number of people literally bought a PS3 exclusively as a bluray player back in 2006 because even with the 600 dollar price tag a PS3 was still only half the cost of Bluray players. I think that is what that guy was referring to.
Hope they can improve the app on the consoles now, i dont know if anyone has those issues, but for me it crashs all the time, even on my PS5.
@PegasusActual93 You where talking about back then? Ah ok i know because i had someone who sold things like that and he said that people could buy a PS3 instead also because it was one of the better Bluray players at the moment.
I'm surprised it was actually supported for this long. I know someone said YouTube still works on PS3, but it kept crashing on me last time I tried.
Not like that matters but holy crap is time just going by
