Bandai Namco has confirmed in its latest sales report that Elden Ring has sold 16.6 million copies as of June 2022. Its huge success means "the segment profit of the digital business" has "increased significantly". Elden Ring had already outsold Demon's Souls, every single Dark Souls entry, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice just a few weeks after launch, but this new sales landmark pushes it even further into the realm of a mega-hit that truly broke into the mainstream.
For context (provided by Ars Technica), the latest official sales stats put Dark Souls III at 10 million copies sold. The original Dark Souls and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice then each sit at around five million units. At the rate Elden Ring is selling, it could easily surpass the 27 million total sales of the entire Dark Souls series, which was amassed over nearly 10 years.
It's an astounding achievement for a game from a Japanese developer that used to dabble in King's Field and Armored Core — a franchise it's actually rumoured to be returning to. That is quite… actually, forget ‘quite’… that is INSANE! Congrats to From Soft, for me personally, it’s about time that they hit these kinds numbers.
Hopefully this leads to more bigger non-hand-holding Games without hours and hours of cutscenes
@uptownsoul From’s value is too high now, Sony would have to give them IP rights to Bloodborne to get them to even consider that.
Best (non VR) game I've ever played.
That's insane. Congratulations FromSoftware.
Well deserved success for an amazing game. Congrats From!
This only shows that a good game will sell no matter what
A lot of my casual gamer friends picked this game up due to the hype of George R R Martin alone. These are the people that play Fifa and COD everyday. Turns out Game of Thrones has done a lot for the culture, despite the terrible ending.
Do we know what percentages were sold where? Hope games sell well to dissolve services like game pass.
It’s wonderful to see gamers at large rallying around an authentically great game. I feel that this was the biggest game launch in ages, one where pretty much anyone that plays games was taking it for a spin. It’s the first game in maybe 5-10 years that myself and all of my friends played at launch.
That's an achievement for gaming in general.
It's a hardcore game with no hand holding. It's showing that people want good quality games, not easy experiences that just shove you with "rewards" every five minutes.
It could definitely change the gaming landscape for the better.
@OthmaneAD confirmation bias at its finest. If only it were that simple.
I still don’t know whether I should give these games a real chance and with which one to start. Since I absolutely loved Returnal (and finished it) I feel ready for more difficult games where dying is part of the process. I tried Demon’s Souls briefly via PS Plus though and was quite overwhelmed by all the mechanics and the relentless enemies (however small).
Does it get better when you pull through or should I start with Elden Ring instead (although DS is part of my subscription)?
As one who has been lured into the From-fold by the accessibility of ER (by which I mean easy access to helpful Spirit Ashes, opportunity to always go somewhere less challenging, over-levelling, and plentiful fastravel) I can't help but wonder if some of their previous games could have performed even better, and if we will see further design choices that moves away from 'git gud' (I think ER proves that you can definitely still have a challenging game while offering players more approaches).
Although definitely impressive, I thought I saw that the numbers were around 16 million like 3 months ago. These are June numbers so maybe I just saw them already.
Still, it sold 13.4 million in the first five weeks, so it’s had a sharp drop off (to be expected for any game, of course). Although it’s no small task to sell another 2.6 million in 2 months. From and Bandai-Namco are no doubt pleased. Not to mention a little chump change for GRR Martin, who probably completely forgot he was involved with this.
I remember when Dark Souls selling a million was considered amazing, well done From for one of the best games ever made.
@Darude84 Demons Souls gets better. If you grab some of the 4-1 gear right away (YouTube guide for Crescent Fachion +1, Adjudicators Shield, Refenerators Ring) it makes the game very manageable but still a challenge.
Also there’s a very active discord that gives away items and help with levels/bosses.
I have to imagine the GRRM branding was critical in hitting those numbers, considering how vastly this has outsold previous From Software games.
I mean, their reputation as a developer has also grown, but that's... significant.
I'm sure the move toward an open world and improved accessibility compared to their previous games also helped.
I actually really enjoyed the game, which I wasn't expecting. It's not perfect, and I would like to see the difficulty be re-balanced a little bit in future titles, but FS is doing a good job of evolving beyond the hardcore niche they've cultivated without betraying the expectations of their existing fans. Hopefully any future Souls-style games improve on this open world format.
N.i.c.e. 👑💚 easily one of the best games ever made.congratulations from software.word up son
You have to consider that not many "big hitter" games has been released since february. It's easier to sell a lot when there's not much competition. Personally I burnt out of the format/concept with Dark Souls which I enjoyed quite a bit, I admit.
@Darude84 With the FromSoft games, it's essential to "understand" the combat. Once that clicks, it gets much easier. Little things like when and especially where to roll, managing your stamina properly, finding those windows to attack. No big overpowered weapon will make you beat the game if you don't "get" the combat. That would just make fights shorter but not necessarily easier. That's one thing I love about those games. But it takes a bit to get there, no doubt.
@ChrisDeku @uptownsoul
One of the higher ups at FromSoftware said last year that their favourite game that they've made is Bloodborne. He also said that they want to do a sequel, but that it was up to Sony if that happens or not.
Meanwhile a new volume of the Bloodborne comics is releasing. To sum up/speculate, Sony definitely see ongoing value in that franchise, and FromSoftware definitely want to do a sequel.
Bloodborne II is absolutely going to happen. It's just a matter of time.
@Shepherd_Tallon it’s one of my all time favourites… 100% the trophies and would happily indulge in a BB2
It's amazing what hype can do, I bought it played an hour then threw it in my backlog of games I regret buying.
@Mikey856 It's probably my favourite PS4 game. I'd love to see them expand on the Chalice Dungeons. I spent a ridiculous amount of time clearing them.
@Sqush-Pare I was about to say that. Sure, the game is universally praised by critics and most gamers, but hype is mainly responsible for these sales. Without the hype, it would have still done well, but perhaps a bit better than most Souls games, not the monstrous numbers that it did.
At any rate, always happy to see good games sell well.
And if past experience is any indication the eventual DLC (or DLCs) will make the game even better.
I'd actually like to see From go back to Armored Core.
@Sqush-Pare Exactly, that´s what happens when you follow trends instead of interests.
@Shepherd_Tallon oh god I still have nightmares about amygdala in the chalice 😂
For anyone who has played all of From software's games, is this game really the best of the bunch?
@Mikey856 Right??? Or that dungeon that cuts your health in half. fml the final boss in that area took me an entire Saturday.
It's amusing to see people always try to find a reason for Elden Rings sales and ratings, other than it being a solid game. When a game gets nothing but praise, of course people are going to buy it.
Some of you even think they should stop making souls like games, just because they don't like them. What about the millions of other people out there enjoying the games?
Can't wait to start NG+ with a INT FAI female seeing all the ladies attire I have stocked. The only game(s) mute protags fit as there's not so much chatter, unlike Joker just standing there watching Morgana spew 55,000 lines of text.
@Mikey856 @Shepherd_Tallon I could say in all my years of gaming, Defiled Amygdala is the one enemy that made me feel hopeless. Summoning Madman Waller & co. still, everything felt useless. I believe your life reduced to half was the main culprit making it almost impossible.
@Humaniac "When a game gets nothing but praise, of course people are going to buy it."
How many times does this assertion need to be proven to be wrong exactly?
Quality =/= sales
@TheArt @Mikey856 Oh that was in the same dungeon???
It's been so long I'd forgotten.
It was genuinely one of the most soul shattering boss fights I've come across.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah the same dungeon. And there were these terrifying crazy madman dreadlocked guys in there 😆. I like how ER scatters the dungeons across the map though tempting your curiosity, as opposed to BB's - which makes you disregard them unless you make the conscious effort to explore them.
Holy heck, that's like, nintendo main zelda/mario or cod games numbers I think 😅
It’s great and well deserved !
Shows again that buying a game you really want and enjoy it for as long as you want is not going anywhere and the most sensible way to play a game you like.
Elden Ring is a triumph, despite some performance issues. So happy for FromSoftware!
Now bring on Armored Core!!
it does seem like they now have no reason aside from arrogance to use a newer/ different engine or rebuild theirs from the ground up. Its dated and plagued with performance issues despite the platform it runs on.
I hope they do so and ensure their next project doesn't reuse so many old assets and animations alongside the old engine.
Their art direction and gameplay are sound;.... performance, visuals and relying on "lore" (which means pretty much nothing but an excuse in these games), to tell half a$$ a story, should absolutely be improved and brought up to the level of at least the last 5 years..
here's hoping they set aside inertia and progress.
You would think with such success the devs would release a patch to fix the frame rate issues, especially on current gen consoles. But 6 months have passed and still nothing...
@xDD90x it's the opposite, actually. If it's already selling well, no reason to fix it. That's how CDPR got away with releasing Cyberpunk on a totally broken state, it'd already had massive pre-order sales. They only fixed it because Sony delisted it.
@Milktastrophe True. I was thinking from the perspective of From/Bandai doing it as a gesture of goodwill to their customers who supported their game despite its performance issues. But you're right. Who am I kidding...
@TheArt totally. It was the one time I had to be carried by some absolute legends 😂😂
These games definitely aren't for me was pulling my hair out (not literally) doing the final boss on nightmare on re3 remake the other night & ndesu on professional on re5 last night lol
I've never played a Souls like game. My favorite recent games that I've finished are Ratchet and Clank, Horizon Forbidden West and Resident Evil 8. I also loved the Tomb Raider and Uncharted Series.
Do you think I would enjoy a game like Elden Ring? I've been thinking about buying either Elden Ring or Ghost of Tsushima next.
@Would_you_kindly Playing games with difficulty options on the highest difficulty is typically much more frustrating than From games on the normal difficulty.
Good numbers. Proud to have been one of them.
@KundaliniRising333 Sorry that there's no hand holding in the story? Not really the game's fault on that.
@Nepp67 Yah, yah. I've heard this from fans in nearly every iterative installment of these games. Now, keep in mind I'm a fan as well and been playing them since Kings Field. However I can at least set aside my Fandom of the gameplay and admit if these games had a coherent story that only furthered progression and a sense of exploration, along with a new non broken game engine, these games would elevate even further.
@Would_you_kindly What @mrraditch said. From's games are manageable. Other games on their highest difficulty are harder than From's. There's a lot of artistic direction to admire in their games, don't miss out.
@Toypop the digital PS5 was the only one I could find so that's the one I have.
Btw what do you mean that the game won't look like the videos for me since I'm new to it?
@IonMagi
why are in pushquare if you hate cutscenes games?
@CapGod Well you are thankfully not forced to only play Sony FP Games on Playstation
@IonMagi
What a waste of money choosing the console then
@CapGod I have enough money to afford this, dont worry Mate
@IonMagi
I can afford all 3 lol. That doesn't matter. Your earnings does not make a console more worth it. No correlation there. Plus all you do is complain about sony, so I guess I am right on this one. You wasted it. Blocked
@__jamiie absolutely
A good game that gets a good sales amount, love to see it. Reckon its DLC will sell a hefty amount as well
@KundaliniRising333 The games are praised for their story and lore by the majority alone buddy but go off I guess about something you don't understand. I don't care if you've been a fan since King's Field lol, there's a reason why there's millions of lore videos for every souls games with Sekiro included and that's more story heavy compared to others in the entire franchise. That should tell you something but somehow it doesn't cause you just want to be completely ignorant to it for whatever reason.
@Toypop gotcha thanks for the explanation!
From Software is great and deserves it.
