If you’re a PS5 owner playing the upgraded GTA 5 on your new console, you’re part of the problem. As part of an earnings call, Rockstar’s overlord Take-Two revealed that new-gen owners are “monetising at a rate 36 per cent higher than players on the previous generation” in GTA Online. In other words: new console owners are spending more money on the game.
Now, this isn’t entirely nefarious, and there are logical conclusions to be made here. For starters, GTA Online is now available as a standalone purchase on PS5, without the main GTA 5 campaign, meaning there’ll be a ton of new fans picking up the title for the first time. In fact, it was included for free with PS Plus for a few months, driving a 40 per cent increase in players for the quarter ending 30th June, 2022.
There are also more reasons to spend on PS5 right now. A selection of new vehicle upgrades were added exclusively to the new-gen versions of the game, while subscription GTA+ is not available on PS4 and other older consoles. It makes sense, then, that more money is being spent on the spangly new systems rather than their predecessors.
Still, you’ve got to remember this is a nine-year-old game, which makes the increased spending impressive to say the least. “The GTA Online community remains strong, and its audience size is operating at a new normal that is 49 per cent higher than the pre-pandemic first quarter of fiscal 2020,” a spokesperson said.
Translation: the numbers aren’t quite as high as they were during lockdown, but they are following an upward trajectory consistent with trends prior to the pandemic. That’s pretty incredible, and as we noted earlier, it sets an unfathomably high bar for GTA 6 to clear. We wish the team at Rockstar a lot of luck – it’s going to need it!

Grand Theft Auto is dead and GTAOnline killed it.
@ATaco except it is doing really well and making insane amounts of money and GTA online is the reason why
They probably have more disposable income in most cases
I have to agree with the above comments..gta online is a horrible place to be but its great for all the horrible people who just love to ruin the experience for everybody else..
Soon as I finished this game on PS3 I never touched it again and don't plan to. To many other games out there to join a developers cult to feed them money constantly.
I’ve never spent a dime on shark cards and I bought this back in 2013.
I dread seeing the state of games by 2032.
@ATaco The writing was on the wall to an extent with the PC online mods for the GTA3 series. Single player obviously needs to stay but Online brings a huge amount to the table, like it or not.
It was absolutely mind blowing back then and was the obvious route to go down.
Its a shame for those who only play single player games and want more regular releases but it seems most people would prefer to play the game long term once the single player content is complete with their mates.
Its kinda outstayed its welcome with me now (a new map would have been awesome as per what was often rumoured) but I've had a few thousand hours of fun with GTAO and not spent a penny.
What happened to all the talent that built that world? Surely they haven’t all stuck around making different skins and car decals for the past decade?
@OmegaStriver GTAV on the PS6 will be making more money than all games across every platform.
i just like the story campaign not fussed on online throwing away your money on that side of it.
I thought they shutdown the PS4 servers a few months ago.
@kyleforrester87 it lives on as a money consuming corpse of its former self. It might be successful monetarily but if you're a diehard fan that wants to see the franchise continue to push forward and innovate, it is dead. I predict GT6 will simply be more GTAOnline on a new map.
I hope everyone buying those damn things constantly feel like they have a stone in their shoe and when they go to get it out, there's no stone to be found.
Forever.
These things are a cancer on video gaming. Not one single game with these types of MTX in them has improved the market or sphere in any shape or form. They've ALL collectively made things worse.
@ATaco I know, I know. I played Final Fantasy 13, after all.
They are also spending over twice as much on a console…
@Enigk At this point yes. Lots of GTA talent was lost, the person behind GTA itself is not there. It will sell huge the first week and beyond if its good. If its a flop it will still beat records. But only during launch week.
I mean really thats not true anyway. All they have to do is make a new map and online only. No story. Just new map and normal missions and it will be the new best all time seller. Fairly quick
Nefarious. Word up, son. 😀
And this is why we got zero single player story expansions in 5 and will likely not get any in 6 either
@Tasuki those were the ps3 servers. And Xbox 360.
I've spent countless hours in GTA Online and had tons of fun. If you've got a good group of friends on there, you don't need to spend a penny.
That will add another 12 months to the gta 6 release schedule
What's the problem? This give Rockstar the time and money they need to make GTA6 the best it can be.
Shock horror, those who spent £450 on a new console and paid to update the game recently spend more than those who didn't. Who ever would have guessed??? /s
GTA Online is dreadful. Technically and content-wise it's incredible but to play? Awful.
I got tired of being instantly killed by some random who Imd had no interactions with. The sheer volume lf races and events online is overwhelming, and the addition of jetpacks and laser guns and space weapons has just turned the online game into a hotbed of anger and entitlement.
The money generated has blinded everyone.
I loved the actual three-pronged story of GTA 5 and really do hope that GTA 6 has a really strong solo campaign.
