One of the best things about PlayStation games coming to PC is the things we learn once our more technologically savvy brethren get their hands on them. Case in point, developer Insomniac apparently toyed around with the prospect of adding multiplayer to Marvel's Spider-Man during development.
Twitter user DniweTamp discovered references to both competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes while sleuthing through the game's executable files, a feat which was later replicated and confirmed by VGC.
While we only have several lines to go off, it appears as though a cooperative mode in which a second player controlled Miles Morales, was on the cards at some point, which sounds thoroughly awesome to us. In addition, PVP callouts were discovered, that reference red and blue teams, and players becoming the Superior Spider-Man. For example, Player 1 has become the Superior Spider-Man!
It's a pretty fascinating prospect, and perhaps something Insomniac will consider looking into in the future. Probably too much to expect from Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but we can dream, can't we?
Do you wish Insomniac had included a multiplayer element to Marvel's Spider-Man? How do you think it would have all worked? Bring a friend along to the comments section below.

I would absolutely lose it if Spider-Man 2 was somehow revealed to be a co-op campaign between Peter and Miles. The mechanics of something like It Takes Two and A Way Out mixed with the fantastic gameplay of the first two Spidey games probably sounds much better on paper than it would be in execution…but let me dream, darn it!
I really hope this is in Spider-Man 2, and I actually don’t think it’s impossible. It would be a major point of distinction between 1 and 2, the trailer heavily emphasizes the multiple Spider-Men, and it’s exclusively on PS5 so any hardware limitations could be potentially sidestepped.
Co-op? ABSOLUTELY. MP? Hell no. That sounds about as good of an idea as the Arkham Origins MP or GOD OF WAR: Ascension’s MP. Even the MP in Dead Space 2 sounded like a good idea but turned out to be gabbage.
That likely would have been fun
I mean giving the miles ending i fully expect Spiderman 2 to be coop with both of them.
No I’m more interested in Venom single player story hopefully.
(Although a couch co op option would be cool)
@Ssimsim @Deoxyr1bose @LimitedPower Spider-Man 2 being co-op would be cool, though hopefully they would offer both couch and online co-op...
Would have loved to have co-op! Uncharted 2 mastered it, made the story missions in co-op so much fun. Would have loved something like that with Spider-Man.
I wouldn't rule competitive online entirely if it's like Spider-Man No Way Home kind of idea and allowing the opponent play as the bad guys
@Teddie-bear Uncharted 2 & 3 co-op should be the blueprint for anyone trying to implement co-op in a single player third-person game.
Thinking back to the reveal for Spider-man 2, it kind of hints that both Peter & Miles will tackle Venom together, so perhaps this will be a huge point for the sequel.
Probably quite viable as it's being built up a PS5 only game rather then a PS4 update as before.
I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'm really hoping this Co-op mode isn't going to be in Spider-Man 2 but a separate Spidey multiplayer project instead.
Multiplayer Spider-Man doesn't sound like a great idea without any context on how it would work. Not saying it would automatically be bad but I just can't picture a world where that is fun. Would love to be wrong though.
I hope not but we will see.
@theMEGAniggle Agreed. They did it the best! Could replay it many times over and never got tired of it. Most co-op games I end up forgetting at some point in time but they are the most memorable. Would have really liked to have seen ND adding it to TLoU.
Online multiplayer with another friend controlling Miles/Parker friends would be pretty awesome. Everything else, not so much.
they need to make 4 player AAA , non-indie , games again . we’re in 9th gen , bring back couch co-op and online co-op games again .
@Teddie-bear honestly! It fit so seamlessly, they were definitely building the game to be played that way from the start. I think a lot of co-op games are forgettable because they just tacked on the co-op. That's the only thing TLOU is missing to be honest
@theMEGAniggle That's true! Wishful thinking but I'd love to see them add it to the standalone multiplayer game. A co-op mode and the competitive mode
@Teddie-bear one could hope 🤞
