Mortal Kombat is a treasured franchise among fighting game fans, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the beginning of October. Many had hoped that developer NetherRealm Games would commemorate the occasion as loudly as one of Johnny Cage’s jackets, and while that may still turn out to be true – well, the firm’s 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle isn’t going to be earning the firm many Friendships.
Available to pre-order on Amazon UK – but technically not yet officially announced – the package includes a copy of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 and last year’s maligned movie in 4K Ultra HD. To be fair, it does only cost £29.99, which is likely to work out at around $34.99 in the United States. Moreover, it includes a pretty tasty Amazon Exclusive steelbook case, which looks really nice.

But we’re not entirely sure who this is for. You’ve got to imagine that Mortal Kombat super-fans will already own Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in some form, and will probably have seen the film, too. It’s likely this is just part of NetherRealm Games’ series celebrations, with the bundle due out on 26th September, 2022 – a whole two weeks before the anniversary itself. Hopefully this is merely a case of Warner Bros trying to find a creative way to flog more copies of the game – and the really exciting stuff will come later in the year.

Shoutouts to Warner Bros for how they shut down multiple pitches for rereleases and remasters of the original arcade Mortal Kombat titles, yet when it’s actually appropriate for them to release it they rerelease the game that’s been rereleased 3 times now and a 4/10 movie.
@Deoxyr1bose Haha, well like I said in the article, I'm fairly sure there will be more when the anniversary rolls around.
30 years of Mortal Kombat!!!
Here's a version of the game that came out 3 years ago with last year's movie...
@eltomo I wonder if it's difficult for them to do anything about the older games (which probably aged poorly anyway, tbh). Technically Netherealm Studios only worked on the last 3 games, even though it's always been Ed Boon at the helm.
@Voltan I did just think, the tricky part will be guest characters on the older games. I haven't done the research, but perhaps some are owned by new studios/companies?
@Deoxyr1bose Calling that movie a 4/10 is being VERY generous.
I agree with BruskPoet this is worse than getting nothing
@GeneJacket Agreed. F*****g abysmal trash.
DISAPPOINTING AS HELL !
@Voltan i don’t even think ed boon runs anything , i think hes just a face
or eyebrows
A proper “digital sprite” remake of UMK3 would be huge. The only negative is they wld have to mocap new actors for the characters.
@get2sammyb Will they include all the DLC on disc thats my bigger issue otherwise ill buy the PS4 version and upgrade it.
@GeneJacket Is it that bad have not seen it yet.
I'd consider it but I don't need the steelbook.
@Flaming_Kaiser Imagine a Mortal Kombat movie where everyone constantly talks about a Mortal Kombat Tournament that never happens. A Mortal Kombat movie that leaves out Johnny Cage, but fundamentally changes Kano to make him a Johnny Cage stand-in, endlessly spouting bad one-liners and quips. A Mortal Kombat movie that feels the need to unnecessarily explain why everyone has superpowers in the most asinine and needlessly convoluted way possible. A Mortal Kombat movie with some of the worst fight choreography of any modern action film. A Mortal Kombat movie with a budget of $55 Million dollars, produced and distributed by the second largest studio in the world, that has the single worst editing of ANY modern action. This thing has jump-cuts, like you'd see in a sh*tty youtube video by someone using iMovie for the first time. It ALSO features one of the weirdest undercurrents of sexism, with everyone telling Sonya she can't fight in the tournament that never happens because of the most moronic plot contrivance, DESPITE showing us over and over that she's the ONLY character with any skill.
It's legitimately insane how f'ing bad it is. If you want to watch an MK movie, just watch the '95 one again or the semi-recent animated films, which are genuinely pretty great.
@GeneJacket Ok the first 10 lines made not want to see it thanks for the information. 👍
These companies never do what the fans want them to do like alot of people myself included wanted a classic collection for resident evils 25th anniversary & we got some Fortnite skins instead 🙃
I got introduced to mortal kombat in 1992.me being a huge arcade fan back in the late 1980s and early 1990s in queens new york.arcade game was everywhere.its been a fun ride.mortal kombat is iconic.word up son
@Would_you_kindly And a lot of people still don't seem to understand that the potential profit from re-releasing RE 1-3 classic would not cover the cost of porting them to modern systems. The best we could hope for with stuff like that is getting the old roms running via emulation through a wrapper, which we can already do.
Capcom rightly knows the very, very few people that genuinely want to play those games in 2022 already have relatively easy access to them, and for everyone else the remakes are right there.
@eltomo the old games didn’t have guest characters beyond the franchise and they have the right to them. They were all produced by Midway, all that IP Is owned by Warner Bros when they acquired them and turned them into Netherrealm studios. The home ports are probably more challenging as they were published by Acclaim which no longer exists, but the Arcade versions were superior anyway
I was hoping this would be a collection / anthology. Kind of a letdown!
I'll just play Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection on my PS3, thank you.
Well talk about a lousy start for an 30th anniversary.😒
(assuming this is the start and not the whole thing, you never know.😞)
in generall, fighting games on disc are somewhat useless. If I want a quick round of fatalities, i'm better off with the digital download.
I dunno guys, I played the MK Arcade Collection last week and all the games suck a lot more than I remember. Like really bad. And this is from someone who used to love them. Nostalgia is a heck of a thing, but man...those old games suck, IMHO, lol.
@GeneJacket tlou remastered is right there on PS4 / ps5 didn't stop Sony from releasing it again lol
If you can't see the difference between the two things, I can't help ya.
What better way to celebrate the series with one good part of recent MK and one awful part of recent MK. I mean couldn't we have just gotten scorpions revenge instead
Am I the only person who liked the film?
I've already seen the movie and can grab the game for dirt cheap if I wanted to, so will be a hard pass on the bundle.
I'm a huge MK fan, since the first one got released. And this is disappointing.
And people wanna give The Last of Us Remake flack, Mortal Kombat 11 has been repackaged & rereleased 3 or 4 times since it's original release in 2019, and MK11 not even that great IMO.
Why not a Mortal Kombat Komplete Kollection? From the first ever Mortal Kombat to the latest entry, if it can be done with the TMNT Cowabunga Collection, there's no excuse why it can't be done for Mortal Kombat.
Netherealm know that there won't be alot of sales with the older mk games because kids who played that are now in their 40's which means less sales which also means less money so in the business perspective it makes sense plus the older games aged poorly and games like street fighter can get a remaster since it merely holds up or at least better than mk games
@Notoriousmakavel people who played it in the 90's have probably stopped playing video games in general which means sales won't be so high surprised nobody is mentioning this fact
