A new Persona 5 Royal trailer for the upcoming PS5 remaster has been published today as part of an Atlus livestream, but it doesn't bring us any closer to official confirmation of what this updated version actually has to boast about. Clips from the game are out in full force, yet there's little in the way of details concerning what it's packing under the hood ahead of release on 21st October 2022.
The silver lining here is the gameplay footage looks considerably smoother than the PS4 original, suggesting we've at least got a framerate boost to look forward to. The game already runs at a native 4K resolution on PS5 via backwards compatibility, so there's only so much that can be done in the graphics department anyway. That's not stopping Atlus from charging full price, however, and there won't be a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade.
Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are also on their way to PS4, but we'll need to wait until next year to play those. Still, at least this new trailer reminds us just how much of a masterpiece Persona 5 Royal still is — we're itching for another playthrough, to be honest. Will you be committing some time at the end of 2022 to a replay of Persona 5 Royal on Sony's latest machine? Hope for more improvements in the comments below.

No need to sell it again because they know their audience of zealots will buy it again regardless. /jk
60fps4K is what i expect. I won't be upgrading unless you can transfer your save though.
@WallyWest Not being able to transfer your save would be a killer for me as well. I got into New Game+ 3 or something on PS4, and I had put so much time into making an unstoppable team of personas. I don't know if I could face starting over.
I love P5R and want to play it at 60fps with new visuals but paying the same price for it on PlayStation again is rough. I'm not expecting it for free but at least a lower price. But I suppose this release is meant for the other platforms that got the game and not us with the PS5 release just being thrown to not make us feel left out. Looking forward to playing P4 Golden on a home console next year.
I dont think 60fps matters much on a turn based combat like persona , and the world exploring wouldnt feel much different either
Be nice if they backtracked on the no upgrade path.
I'm not sure what looks worse about this, that it's a "remaster" that they won't even say what's different, or that there's no upgrade path, especially when the difference is so minor they won't even say what it is. Atlus is a strange, strange duck.
@WallyWest @ShogunRok
I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you two on there being save transfers sadly. I hope I'm wrong of course but this is Atlus we are talking about...
I already bought this game twice, i'm not paying full price for this. GTFO with that bulls--t Atlus.
I just bought PS5R this summer and am about 40 hrs in, so I have no interest in upgrading unless it's small upgrade fee. The game is brilliant as it is.
I'm going to be real but this honestly feels like a massive cash grab on the playstation side of things
I spent 120 hours on Vanilla P5 and just never started Royal yet.
Without a save transfer I'm kinda glad I didn't.
Where is the outrage? Must be a naughty dog thing...
@Loftimus You must have missed the first article for this news.
Plenty of "outrage" there, and some here. If you read some of the comments
@Constable_What yes mate but not '140 comments in an hour on every article about it' kind of outrage and this is ten times worse. Obviously tlou has a bigger pool of moaners but still?
As much as I love 60fps this game doesn't need it. I'm 50 hours in and just finished The Tomb and now feel burned out. It is a long long game. I never got this burned out from P3 FES or P5 Golden.
I'm torn. As someone who never bought P5R it would seem a great time to get it but I'm also loathe to support the game when they're not offering existing users at least a cheap upgrade option
I'm happy with ps5 royal on PS4, got the main game free with plus collection and got the dlc in a sale 👍👍
@AstraeaV I'm anxious starting it, I've heard good things about it but this game is a massive time sink being a RPG 🤔🤔
@themightyant God help me. I am getting it for the switch and might pick it up down the road on xbox but I ain't getting it for the ps5 especially if its full priced. I also have fes (PS3) and portable and golden and the base version of 5. So I am part of the problem So I apologize for that.
Still itching for another playthrough myself too but I'm still not paying to upgrade. PS4 version of Royal will do just fine.
@GreenRanger521 We all have those games. I ain't mad at cha
@Loftimus The outrage is very much present, it's just that TLOU is a mass market thing and Persona is a niche title, so the pool of people is just smaller in general.
The other difference is people expect better from ND and Sony. Nobody expects better from Atlus and Sega at this point... Atlus is the original cash grabber for whom the phrase "Atlus Tax" is used. Their former parent company went down in a fraud investigation. It's kinda who they are. Unlike ND though they're not trying to spin it every other week as some great new revolution it isn't with some new semi-lie, they just gave everyone the finger, dropped the mic and walked out.
I wonder if games like this go to GP because they know on xbox it wouldn't really be played/purchase in the same numbers as PS otherwise.
Oh how I wish I was young again and could sink the 300 hours necessary to play this game
I just want every region to have all language options because if I ever want to play it again besides from the NA version, I’d much rather play it in English. Really no excuse not to include language packs in each region. The 60 FPS would be cool too
Hard pass, bought it on the PS3 and then on PS4.
Both of them were heavily discounted, but still, charging full price is ridiculous for this simple update.
@huyi Pretty sure the PS+ Collection version is just P5, not Royal. Unless they've changed that more recently. The DLC is just cosmetics, not an upgrade to Royal.
Complaining about no free upgrade again lol where the hell is my free upgrade for tlou remastered & GTA 5 😡😡😡
Another BS release. I can understand maybe not giving the free extra content to people who don't buy this version but locking 60fps behind a paywall is scummy.
@Synthatron_Prime Atleast give a option for a upgrade.
Why Atlus? Why must you keep charging PS gamers full price for the same game. I myself bought this game 3 times (ps3, ps4, and royal on ps4). They must really hate their fan base.
@Matroska no, wrong on both counts, PS5 version was never released for the Ps+ collection, on the standard ps4 persona 5 version of the game was, there is TWO dlc, 1 which I got for cheap on 1 sale which includes the costumes, and other which includes the royal expansion.
@Teddie-bear same here
@WallyWest same. I might buy it again, but only if save data transfers. Hopefully on sale too. Atlus stuff goes on sale a lot
Have it on Ps4. More interested in a portable version for a second purchase. I would replay it more.
It's an odd situation, there really doesn't seem to be enough to justify a full price (or well, even discounted) to us who already own it, but I suppose offering a free upgrade would take some thunder from the other systems it is coming out on. Especially the one who appears to have some sort of deal in place.
I regret buying P5R and P5 on PS4 now...will wait for a STEEP discount on the PS5 version in a few years.
I haven’t gotten around to beating the OG P5 because P5R was announced shortly after I bought it. I bought P5R and haven’t played that yet, and now here we are with this PS5 remaster on the imminent horizon. Do I wait for an eventual sale and buy it a third time? 🙈
My gaming backlog isn’t as bad as many, but I still need to get it in order and stop buying games on launch that I’m unlikely to play until months or years later. 💀
This should be a free update no matter what…I don’t see any excuse to resell this, ANY!
@themightyant I am one of the people to buy it again, but not religious. So wrong use of the word „zealots“(know your history)
@BadPlayerOne "Zealot - a person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals."
Doesn't have to have anything to do with religion, and almost perfectly describes the fervour with which Persona fans eulogise their game.
But there was a /jk at the end, it was deliberately OTT from the start.
For what it's worth i've bought it TWICE yet not played it once. lol
@themightyant I know, but mostly it’s used to describe a religious fanatic 🙃 and I know how you meant it. I am just messing around. 😁 You should really try it out. I was very sceptical and didn’t even buy until a few month ago. And it totally surprised me.
@BadPlayerOne I'm sure i'll enjoy it. Just 100-200+ hours is hard to prioritise with real life. Lockdown was a missed opportunity to play this.
@huyi Googling it, it says there's no way to upgrade the regular P5 to Royal. You have to buy it as a separate game. That's how it was originally, and people complained, though it doesn't seem to have changed. Could you link me to the DLC that changes P5 to P5R?
Do you mean this?
https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP0177-CUSA17419_00-PERSONA5RDLCPACK
Because that's costumes and personae, not an upgrade to Royal.
>PS5 version was never released for the Ps+ collection
I didn't say it was. I did make a typo when I first made my post where I wrote PS5 instead of P5 but I corrected that quickly.
