Japanese retailers are expecting Sony to release a new PS5 model in September, but it looks like the latest revision has already arrived in Australia. This is according to Australian site Press Start, in a report that says Sony has once again managed to reduce the console's overall weight, supposedly through the inclusion of lighter internals.
The new disc-compatible PS5 (coded CFI-1202A) is apparently 600g lighter than the launch version, and a somewhat impressive 300 grams lighter than the updated model that launched in 2021. Meanwhile, the new digital only PS5 (coded CFI-1202B) is a similar story: 500g lighter than at launch, and 200g lighter than the 2021 edition. Interestingly, this means that the disc-drived PS5 now weighs the same as the original digital only model, which is a decent improvement.
Of course, with the recent confirmation that the PS5's price is increasing, this news probably won't mean much to potential buyers — not unless you've got a very specific shelf that can only hold a very specific amount of weight.

So they released a new, cheaper to produce model while also raising the price by 50€? Mhm...
Kg? Surely your mistaken.
If my ps5 was 600KG to begin with im pretty sure I'd need forklift to take it home.
I know the ps5 is big, but it's not that BIG
600kg lighter?!? How heavy was the original model?!
600kg...dudes ... easy on the weights 🤣🤣🤣
@IonMagi a lot of Twitter posts saying the release date is the same date as the price rise over in Japan
I'm in the US so don't know the metric system, but watched enough cop shows to know that a kg, kilo, is pretty heavy.
New PS5 motto: What we added in price we subtracted in weight, so it's a draw.
Hmmm, hope there is not yet another manufactured controversy about this new model.
But this is the internet, of course there will be.
Maybe they've further reduced the amount of copper in the console's heatsink.
Is it too early for there to have been a die shrink on the APU used in the PS5?
94 stones for a lightweight PS5. Nice
The fact that I know I won't be able to get a hold of a PS5 where I live for MSRP, and that the stock issue isn't getting any better, makes me lose a lot if interest in all playstation-related. Plus all decisions Sony has made lately.
@IonMagi I'm not trying to defend the price hike but there's there's nothing in this report that could indicate that this new model is cheaper to make. In fact, it's entirely possible that they're going the more expensive route that allows them to make more consoles (since they still can't satisfy the global demand). Just a thought.
New lighter version, with price increase, and yet still struggle to meet demand. and waste time and money on something like psvr2 also which will probably cost more than the actually console and dont meet sonys expectations 😴 I do wonder sometimes
I think we must be talking Grams of weight here maybe. Even that’s to much I think.
@Dezzy70 @rjejr @GoodGame @Sergo @ralphdibny @UltimateOtaku91 Hahaha, I have no idea how I've managed to write kg five times and not realise. Fixed!
Does it draw less power?
@ShogunRok it was funny lol
Important to note that just because the parts are lighter doesn’t mean they’re cheaper. This could just provide an alternative SKU for them to produce with parts that are equally as difficult to source. Meaning the cost to produce might be the same, but they’re able to produce more overall units because the different types of parts used is more diverse.
@Shogunrok well got an F in maths.
Doesn't really mean much for me if the console itself is still as gargantuan - I mean if any console were ever in need of a slim amirite - but if this means increased availability going forward that's good.
@Shstrick
Well, at the least it means it’s cheaper to ship. Then again, that might not mean much given a cabal of shipping companies have increased prices by a criminal 10x taking advantage of the whole COVID situation.
@ShogunRok "I have no idea how I've managed to write kg five times"
One track mind?
@ShogunRok haha don't worry, it can happen to the best of us!
Typical Sony. Charging us more and giving us less
4.5 - 0.6 = 3.9 kg
Nice.
@zupertramp
It's probably the worst aesthetically designed console I've seen.
I hope the PS6 is a sphere. Why not just go all out insane at this point.
Still nothing on it and I own one
This next gen is a joke compared to all others and you cannot blame the pandemic. Framerate improvements and FPS compared to the old times of significant improvement - remember snes to n64? Ps1 to ps2 or even 3 and 4. It isn’t a great change
Imagine buying a jet engine like the first PS4 Pros with the new, lighter internals.
@rjejr 1kg is very light. Its a console, not a phone so I'm not sure what difference 0.6kg makes 🤷♂️
@Toypop I've really never experienced this. How unlucky can someone be if they've had it on multiple base PS4's, PS4 Pros and even the PS5. Damn
Lighter doesn't mean better. When I think about the PS3 Super Slim. I guess they changed parts for plastic.
I'd need one smaller.
It's the only console that won't fit in to my console unit.
@Shstrick There's no need for Sony to make a lighter console unless it's cheaper and easier for them to make.
@ShogunRok I’m not sure whether the article is better or worse now lol.
@theMEGAniggle Did you get here late? The article didn't list the weights as g for grams, it listed them as kg, for kilograms. 500kg, 600kg. kg may not be a lot of weight but 500kg and 600kg is. Robert went back and edited the article after everyone pointed out his mistake.
If you knew all of that, then I have no idea what you are talking about, sorry.
Means you be paying more for less materials! No sale
@Styledvinny79 still cross gen development
@Reeneman a joke
@Uromastryx I agree they shouldn't make psvr2 because you don't like vr?
Any chance they can reduce the chassis size so I can actually fit one under my TV?
Nono I have psvr1 and I love it, just I think they should focus on more important things like meeting demand rather than some over priced accessory is all I'm saying
@ROTTIEMAN16 Nono I have psvr1 and I love it, just I think they should focus on more important things like meeting demand rather than some over priced accessory is all I'm saying
@Styledvinny79 people will always have something to complain. I really enjoy the 60 fps in all the games currently. Furthermore Horizon 2 on ps5 is one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever see. Also GT7 is beautiful, beside some minor flaws.
The bigger jump will come with the new unreal engine and „next“ gen only title.
I guess people will then complain about lower res and/or 30 fps.
@Reeneman imagine 30fps in the 2020s . that’s worth an uproar
Why buy weights and when you can bench press a PS5.
sounds like they are cheaping out on the cooling components. still waiting patiently for the slim...
What do I care about a lighter version?If I can’t even buy it in Europe. PlayStation only cares about the US. The rest must find some scraps to get and now that they increased the price everywhere else except you guessed it the US. They can go and f… themselves. I will play my PS4 until it breaks down. I am surely not paying €50 extra only because I live in Europe. A market they obviously don’t care about. As if the US doesn’t have inflation.
@rjejr It's like 1.25lbs. That's a heck of a lot of missing metal for a now-more-expensive machine.
What's the white whale version of "RROD/YLOD"?
@rjejr can you not read? 600g = 0.6kg. It is very light. Not sure how much difference it makes to the console. Did your brain get here late
If anyone is trying to get a ps5 Walmart online has had the horizon bundle in stock for the last 5 hours. https://www.walmart.com/ip/PS5-Console-Horizon-Forbidden-West-Bundle/884437848?irgwc=1&sourceid=imp_xPb3iK2HixyNUdcw3n0BVyJtUkDRW6WXIyxITM0&veh=aff&wmlspartner=imp_1442478&clickid=xPb3iK2HixyNUdcw3n0BVyJtUkDRW6WXIyxITM0&sharedid=&affiliates_ad_id=1167790&campaign_id=9383
Glad I have the OG heavy version. It can double as an anchor if I ever get a sailboat.
I want a heavier one Sounds cool Even these small upgrades make me drool(I don't know why) Looking forward to seeing a PS5 Slim to tho
@Uromastryx you enjoyed psvr1 and your not looking forward to psvr2 and being able to play AAA games on it?I think Sony has enough reach to deal with the ps5 situation and put out an accessory what hopefully will push vr into a lot more gamers hands
@GroundPlay Yet here you are 😉
Lmfao so cheaper but more expensive to the customer.
Shrinkflation at its finest.
With the cross Gen focus which they originally lied about, abysmal communication, garbage subscription service, price gouging the customer, could this be the time when Sony falls behind Microsoft?
They seem to be making completely shortsighted profit driven decisions that are ultimately self destructive.
I clicked and read the article as if it was a new PS5 Slim model but then as I read on I realised they’ve just reduced the existing model’s weight. I’m actually happy about that as I’ve only just bought a PS5 last week!
Personally don't care. I know it's still too early but I'm hoping for a slim model, in black preferably. I don't care for the current design at all.
Will cost less to produce but they'll charge more lol
A change in weight seems like a crazy thing for Sony to strive for. I mean you literally carry your console once, and unless your entertainment unit is made of paper, you’re probably good. I’m waiting to see a smaller unit that actually fits in my entertainment unit, and that I find aesthetically pleasing
@Toypop my PS4 pro is extremely loud gets to the point I've actually been afraid it was going to blow up I've cleaned out the fan & the heatsink multiple times (something I shouldn't have to do)& it doesn't make any difference, my Xbox one S is almost silent if Sony's guna get sued it should be for that
There is not really much care about this when the console is stationary under your TV anyways, I have the "slightly" lighter model and that seems ok tbh, now when they release different models with more storage or any other physical difference then that is a reason to bother to upgrade to it maybe 🤷♀️🤷♀️
@Would_you_kindly yeah the pro can get really loud, I still have mine, it's also the 2nd gen version but is still doing well but I do remember it's fan being quite obtrusive
The ps5 when playing ps4 games on it is quite quiet on its own without new models being lighter, like I said before more other beneficial changes would be something to talk about apart from lighter internals
@IonMagi isn’t business wild
@jorel262 I agree, the only reason to update your current model if there is some major changes like pro model or more storage, better psvr 2 support or something
@Th3solution you can use it as self defense in extreme cases at least 🤣🤣
@IonMagi they are worse than the energy companies who make a profit while the cost of living of basic needs is a major issue atm
@huyi I got the PS4 pro the same week it came out so it's the launch model early adopters used to end up with better consoles (PS2 fat with BC , PS3 launch model with BC ) now you just end up looking like a 🤡 lol
My interest for a PS5 will return with the release of a not ugly matte black slim model that features a web browser.
@huyi Haha! Definitely could be used to knock someone out. I hope that in God of War Ragnarok that the finisher move Kratos uses to kill Thor involves hurling a PS5 at his head.
@Th3solution devine! Let's mod a cool finisher that will obliterate all! 🤣🤣
@Would_you_kindly I wouldn't say as a fool, as long as it still lasts it doesn't matter, I still have my pro for "archive" reasons, 😎😎
@NoCode23 .......
@huyi I still use it because I've got alot of games I bought for PS4 & obviously specs wise it's better than my one S but there are some games I just don't play on it because they make the fan so loud like genshin impact
@Would_you_kindly you don't want to know how bad it is to transfer PS4 games over to the ps5 via external, when I had my pro and all my games, it's a pain and long process, the external hard drive is fast and ready for ps5 currently but the way Sony let's people transfer the games over is horible, slow and sluggish especially with my collection, I have over 400 games for ps4 and I had to upgrade my external drive to compensate for that, it was a horrible process but now PS4 games load well on ps5 but I will tell you it wasn't a easy process, I don't play free to pay games so I don't know about genshin but I hope one day you get the opportunity to get a ps5 like I did, leave it at that
@Would_you_kindly yeah the fan is quite bad on the pro, I don't miss it
@Discol76 Push Square is one of the best Playstation sites around, and I love reading their articles and the comments section, so of course I´m around here writing my opinions. Even if I keep losing interest in Playstation.
@theMEGAniggle Please go back and read comments 2, 3, 4 and 13, especially comment number 13, written by the bloke who wrote the article, so you can see what you missed.
SONY: 600 grs less product, 50 euros more price.
@rjejr what tf are you talking about. I know they put 600kg by accident. I’m just saying a 600g reduction in weight of the console makes little difference. Bye
@theMEGAniggle When cost are going out of control its will make a difference to ther worldwide shipping bill. Shipping millions of consoles not gonna be cheap
@Would_you_kindly I tried 'Genshin Impact' and it too drove the PS4 Pro to speed up its fan no end. I even tried it with the Supersampling mode off and took it back to as close to PS4 'stock' mode as possible but still very noisy.
I put it down to the PS4 port being a poorly written heap of %@&$ as my Pro is normally very quiet indeed - just had a 4 year service with new thermal paste from my local PC repair place - and it's rocking a cool & rapid SSD inside too. All is quiet...
Be interesting to see what's changed inside the white tub 'o' lard to make it that much lighter. I'd imagine that a die reduction would result in a smaller (less hideous) lump of plastic round it.
P.S. For everyone's reference, a bag of granulated sugar is 1Kg - divide as necessary to get an idea of how much weight loss has been achieved.
@marty8370 not at all but for us it’s not a meaningful difference. We don’t hold the console when we use it so what’s a small 600g difference in weight gonna do? Absolutely nothing. Wake me up when they release a slim model.
Fantastic because I'm always carrying around with me, when I go shopping, when I'm at the beach and when I'm going for a bike ride too.
@sanderson72 its really weird how some games make the fan go crazy & others don't you'd assume it would only be the really graphically intense games that do it but that's not the case I've honestly never had any device that gets anywhere near as loud as my PS4 pro does they obviously skimped on the cooling components I think people that got the original pro model should've atleast been given the newer one in exchange for the old one
I'm good with my launch model PS5, but still a bit peeved at the recent price increase happening in other countries.
@Would_you_kindly Mine's the 7100 series (the middle revision) and my son's got the 7200 series (the last Red Dead one) and I can't tell much of a difference between the two - though mine's always been quiet.
His was an allegedly refurbished one from CEX but hearing it scream the loudest I have ever heard a console playing F1 2020 (near silent on mine) and even Circuit Superstars meant something was up.
A trip to our local PC shop and a full strip down clean and new thermal paste for £50 and all is quiet with his and mine.
ahm, is this a good thing or a bad thing?
@LowTech We won't know until someone strips it apart and does heat map tests on the console body and the exhaust.
I'm still waiting on a slim & less f'ing ugly variant but I suspect that will need a die reduction?
@sanderson72 for once I have the first model and I am happier to have got that one. apart from the controllers. (the battery and the drift are already a problem)
@Shstrick obviously. Hence the price increase.
@sanderson72 I heard that the newer models are quiter than the launch model I've cleaned out any dust in the fan & heatsink but didn't do the thermal paste thing because I'm better with the software side of tech than I am with the hardware lol
@sword_9mm I think the opposite tbh. It's the best looking console by far. Dull looking black boxes are so boring now. Everyone's different I guess
@Would_you_kindly Yeah, I'd be afraid to get paste in the wrong place and knackering the Pro.
Thankfully, the local PC repair shop have plenty of experience of cleaning PS4s and replacing thermal paste so for £50, it seemed like an acceptable price!
