Sony sounds terrified of Xbox’s unprecedented Activision Blizzard buyout – and it’s easy to understand why. While the Japanese giant has historically had its own way in the console business, it now finds itself up against a competitor with unrestricted access to its parent company’s trillion dollar deep pockets – and it’s unquestionably shook.
As regulators continue to paw over the acquisition before it’s approved, ResetEra spotted a questionnaire submitted in Brazil in which the PlayStation maker was asked about its thoughts on the near-$70 billion deal. Its responses are fascinating, because it’s in the firm’s best interests for the buyout to get blocked – even if Microsoft has claimed that franchises like Call of Duty will remain multiformat.
Specifically, the manufacturer points out that Call of Duty is “an essential game: a blockbuster, a AAA-type game that has no rival” and a release that can “influence users’ console choice”. Sony says that it’s impossible to create a competitor, and even if it could stump up the cost, the series is so “entrenched” that it “would not be able to rival it”.
“Each annual Call of Duty release takes approximately three to five years to develop,” the company said. “As Activision releases one Call of Duty game per year, this equates to an annual investment of hundreds of millions of dollars. Approximately 1,200 people work on each version and another 1,500 are involved in publishing and distribution. Thus, Call of Duty alone has more developers than most game companies employ across its entire development portfolio, even AAA studios.”
It added: “No other developer can devote the same level of resources and expertise in game development. Even if they could, Call of Duty is overly entrenched, so that no rival – no matter how relevant – can catch up.” It continued that the series defines the first-person shooter category, and provided comparisons to Battlefield to illustrate that there’s no contest between the brands.
“Players would be unlikely to switch to alternative games, as they would lose that familiarity, those skills, and even the friends they made playing the game,” the company continued. “Even in weaker years like 2021, Call of Duty still managed to outperform most other games by a considerable margin. Call of Duty: Vanguard, for example, was widely regarded as weaker than previous years’ titles, but was still one of the best-selling games of 2021. In other words, even in a bad year, players remain loyal to the brand and continue to buy the game.”
Sony also pointed out that Activision Blizzard continues to recruit for Call of Duty and is looking to expand the series’ already significant workforce, further lessening any chance of a rival emerging.
It’s a really interesting set of statements from the Japanese giant, which demonstrates just how damaging the company expects this acquisition to be. The deal is yet to be approved, of course, but it’s largely anticipated that it will go through. Based on these comments, it’s clear that Sony would be delighted if it got blocked.
Obviously the platform holder is laying it on thick in these statements, but there is truth to what it’s saying. Call of Duty is a machine fed by several teams all at once, and it’d probably require the entirety of PlayStation Studios to create a rival – and even then it’d lack the brand recognition to compete. That’s just not viable.
Ultimately, though, the outcome is out of its hands. It’ll be interesting to see how the industry changes over the coming years. PlayStation is no pauper, of course, but it’s increasingly finding itself up against a rival with bottomless pockets – all at a time when it wants to increase prices. For the likes of PlayStation boss Jim Ryan and other Sony management, it’s going to need to be nimble to navigate this existential threat to its entire brand.

They're absolutely bricking it. 😬
For sure COD is a big franchise, but that doesn't mean single player epic exclusives like horizon, gow, tlou, spiderman are not the ones that sold ps4s
@OthmaneAD To be honest, Call of Duty makes so much money those brands you listed probably don't even scratch the surface of what CoD rakes in.
Especially when you consider that all of those games are just one-time purchases, whereas Call of Duty prints money after launch with its Battle Passes and microtransactions.
It's an absolutely colossal blow.
Ehh, I'd say just about every game is better than Call of Duty.
Pretty sure this is a Sony lawyer just doing their job, which is to state the position in the most dire terms and thus get the most concessions from MS to complete the deal. But I do agree that COD is a giant of its own.
@Milktastrophe Doesn't matter what us as individuals think. It's one of the most played games on their platform.
As a big original MW/MW2 fan, I've quit COD a long time ago. Tried them again, but never liked them.
TLOU factions however, is a masterpiece and I've put thousands of hours into the PS3/4 versions.
With Factions 2 they could really go viral. It's a million times more fun, tense and tactical than anything COD has to offer. It could really become a popular competitive game if they play their cards right.
Sony's been really lacking with their surface level entertainment exclusives as of late though. Tsushima, Spider-Man, Horizon 2, they're just nothing more than fun for the moment. Bland and forgettable storylines. They just lack depth in story and gameplay.
My hype is in check, but if Sony was as competent as they used to be, they would know that PS users buy it for their amazing exclusives and have nothing to worry about, but this ain't the Sony I knew
Not factored into this is COD as a driver for subscription services. How many people get plus to play COD? If you get COD bundled with gamepass, how many additional subscriptions does it drive? Its not my thing, but its clearly a huge force in the games market.
@OthmaneAD Yeah, but it sure as heck would sell an Xbox or two if it was exclusive. It doesn't even been to be fully exclusive; give CoD an exclusivity window and hundreds of thousands of gamers would prefer a Xbox over a PlayStation. Make it Gamepass day 1, and suddenly Gamepass gets an explosion of subscriptions.
This buyout gives Microsoft a ton of options and sway in the industry. Sony's right, there simply is NO competitor to CoD.
This is why I believe the rumors of Sony buying square enix Sony can’t afford to lose another big third party partner to Microsoft.
Good old Sammy with the negative articles. No where have I read that they are "bricking it"
Where is killzone
Doesnt matter. Uncle Phil is everyone's friend and would never gate off content...right? Right????
Realistically its massive loss, and a huge gain for Microsoft but at the same time, all series die and there is a feeling of COD fatigue out there. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft choose to deploy thay workforce. Will they shake up the formula and make something innovative. Will it be the same COD we have been playing for decades, or will they start to deploy staff onto other projects. Will be fascinating to see how it plays out.
I can see a future where, ultimately, Sony will eventually have to allow gamepass on to Playstation but it probably wont happen for 5 to 10 years.
As much as people trounce CoD for being a yearly fall release, it definitely gets the sale numbers.
It's reached a point on here where I know who penned the article just by reading the title.
We have Killzone.
CoD makes unfathomable amounts of money. It’s not even in the same universe as PS5 exclusives. There’s no way in hell that anything Sony develop will come close to the pull of CoD, FIFA, Fortnite etc and while people here might scoff, that’s the overwhelming majority of gamers’ time and money right there. It’s best for Sony that this deal gets blocked, and honestly best for the industry as a whole.
MS have deep pockets but when was the last time they made a truly outstanding game?
It’s interesting that this buyout seems to get a ‘Whoa bro, they got one over on Sony!’ reaction. If Sony did the exact same thing, the article would be about how ‘Sony’s bullish practices are toxic, unfair and hurt the gaming community!’ Funny that.
I mean its hard to disagree.
There are 4 series that completely dominate - FIFA, GTA, Madden and Call of Duty.
Two aren’t necessarily console sellers, the other two are and nobody can compete on their level.
I'd actually be happy to see the back of it. Sony should really be focusing on providing an alternative to what mainstream gaming has become instead of trying to keep up and compete with it.
They need to stop considering themselves as the major player and aim to follow Nintendo's lead by providing more top quality adult based games like Returnal, Last of Us, God of War and the like. They may not make all the money, but they could carve out their own niche and still make a profit. Looking at From Software and following their model on a larger scale could serve them well in the long term.
If the MS x Activision deal does go through Sony might be wise to take a brave step and drop support for COD, and push their own titles instead. Relying on your main competitor as a major hand that feeds you is only going to end badly.
CoD isn't the ONLY FPS game on the Market and whilst it maybe one of the 'most popular' and gained most of that popularity thanks to Xbox, there are alternatives. Battlefield for example offers a bit more 'realism' and there are other military based options.
Sony themselves have a few FPS game franchises in their library too - Destiny has been 'massive' in recent years and now own Bungie, Killzone by Guerrilla games was great and they now own Insomniac who also made the Resistance series.
Sony took over 'marketing' rights of CoD during the PS4 era and ditched Killzone and Resistance - both of which could of been Sony's big FPS Multi-player game and the way CoD/BF have 'deteriorated' with 'bad' money grabbing practices, could of been as 'big' for Sony as paying Activision for marketing CoD.
It's bad if you are relying on 3rd Party Publishers to be 'successful'. If they sell, stop making that game, delay games, screw over their fans, decide to accept a deal elsewhere (as A/B did with CoD which had been marketed by Xbox throughout the 360/PS3 era and into the PS4/XB1 era) etc, then it is going to have a 'negative' impact on them.
Obviously Sony can no longer Market CoD once their current deal expires. They can no longer buy 'extra' content (timed or otherwise) and have 'NO' say on what games come to PS or when. They have to accept that MS owns CoD and its up to them to decide whether CoD continues on PS (outside of Warzone and support for existing games) or not.
Sony can do the same with Bungie and Destiny of course and they have their 'own' studios that can make a Sony 'CoD' like game for their Platform - they are supposed to have 10 'live service' games in the works and its not like they don't have experience in making First Person games.
"it now finds itself up against a competitor with unrestricted access to its parent company’s trillion dollar deep pockets"
I'm sure unrestricted access isn't very accurate!
@get2sammyb Sony should look to Nintendo for inspiration. Switch constantly outsells PS/Xbox with it even about to outsell the PS4's total sales sometime in the next 7 months but it has 0 CoD games, FIFA has been copypaste "Legacy edition" since 2019, etc.
"As regulators continue to paw over the acquisition before it’s approved"
And isn't it pore over? Pour over? Or is this another Stray joke?
Microsoft hasn't been able to properly guide its own major AAA FPS series in recent entries (aka Halo). What makes people think CoD won't be impacted by this negatively?
Microsoft has yet to prove being under their wing has helped ANY of their recently purchased studios.
@Grumblevolcano Its because Mario, Pokemon and Zelda alone have enough IP Power to sell 100+ Million Consoles
There’s a sizeable portion of the public that only plays/buys consoles for COD.
However, as MS pushes Gamepass and remote play, it may not lead to as many Xbox console sales versus just subs to Gamepass. Although if these subs are the future that’s bad news for Sony.
Jeez, they actually sound very worried.
@get2sammyb Any evidence they are bricking it? Theres none in this article?
They simply reply to a question about the impact of cod being single platform and are truthful about it. This point of discussion was routinely discussed, with similar conclussions, back when the aquisition was announced.
Theres a big difference between being realistic about a difficult move your opponent is making and 'bricking it'.
Hell If They Feel So Strongly About it Then They Better Ether Grab Square Enix Or Bite The Bullet And Make a Play For EA.
I'd be delighted if it the acquisition got blocked as well. Microsoft bought a publisher two years ago and now they are buying another one? Where is the line? Regulators are just going to let Microsoft use their near-limitless cash to buy their way to dominance in yet another market? There is absolutely nothing Sony could do to make up for the lost revenue should Microsoft one day decide to make Activision-Blizzard games exclusive (despite what they are saying about the subject before the acquisition is approved). It would be truly crazy if regulators rubber stamped the acquisition.
On another note, Sony should have just quoted Phil Spencer when, after Microsoft announced plans to buy yet another major publisher, he said he feared the damage Big Tech would do to the gaming industry.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/01/microsoft-bigwig-trusts-playstation-not-to-damage-gaming-industry-cautions-against-tech-giants
@Areus EA will be worthless when the fifa deal expires next year. sony should never have shut down japan studios, they need japan back now more than ever. thats what happens when you turn your back on your roots
@Areus Billions and billions and billions
@Irae what a stupid take. EA Sports FC 24 or whatever it will be called is going to sell well regardless of a Fifa deal that does more to keep Fifa's name relevant than make money for EA.
Anyone wishing for this to be blocked; you realise that will free up $70 BILLION in cash for Xbox to potentially spend on other studios?
@get2sammyb Just a theoretical question. If Sony were to lose significant market share to Microsoft through this, Game Pass etc. wouldn't this be good for us the consumer?
My view is that the most pro-consumer Sony have been is when they have been behind i.e. PS1 launch and during PS3. And conversely the worst is when they are flying ahead. A bit like Political parties I personally don't think it's too good for any one to be in the lead/power for too long. Need variation to keep them all honest.
@K1LLEGAL
Microsoft could spend $70B on Activision-Blizzard and then turn around and spend $70B on other studios right now, anyway. The only thing that would stop them is (potentially) regulators. Part of what makes Microsoft so dangerous is they have the kind of cash to vastly outspend competitors on acquiring content and then can afford to give it away much cheaper than competitors can afford (Game Pass) and never bat an eye.
If Sony and Insomniac really wanted to Resistance could be brought back and with the brand being in a much better place these days than it was in 2006-2008 and even 2011, there's no doubt in my mind it could be a hit. On CoD's level? No, but it doesn't have to be.
It's going to hurt when COD comes to GP day one. The good news however is it will still be available on PS5 in some capacity for the foreseeable future. The only reason so many resources go into COD is because of the money it prints. Microsoft isn't going to want to lose out on the revenue COD on PS brings in. Same as the Minecraft situation.
Playstation will be fine. This deal will hurt but it's not as catastrophic as some people think.
@themightyant I understand that, but can you ever truly compete with a company ~20x your size?
I believe that Sony will do a few things over the next year or 2, which is purchase Square Enix and have them as a first party exclusive developer, invest in smaller companies and have acquisitions similar to the Bungie purchase, to which I would love to see Capcom, WB Games or Ubisoft. Now, Although the die hard fans will think this is crazy, the way that Sony handled the Bungie acquisition was great in my opinion. Have basic full control of the finances, allow the games to make money from rival systems and making sure that Destiny, or whatever Bungie is working on will never be taken away from PlayStation. If this was done with Capcom ( which I genuinely think could happen ), the Resi Games, Monster Hunter and Street Fighter would forever remain on PlayStation. If Microsoft had bought Bungie or Capcom, that would be the end of Sony seeing anything on their console from them again. It’s down to the huge acquisition of Activision Blizzard and all the wangles to get the deal over the line that COD is being spoken about staying on PlayStation. Give it another generation and I would not be surprised if Sony never saw another COD again (not that I would miss it personally)
They should try make a CoD type of game of their own. Buying Titanfall would be a start but some fans want a modern militery game rather than a titan one and push it to success or make something brand new and keep it multiplatform. Grow the studio over time too. If they need to, allow it on GamePass to make money through battlepass.
Killzone and Resistance would be amazing but those would be limited. Killzone was meant to be a Halo killer but even Halo can't complete against CoD
@TheCollector316 they have the money sure but Phil Spencer has people above him so there are limits despite how it may seem. Acti-Blizz is proven with its cash cow games so that is why they allowed such a huge acquisition. If not them, then i’m sure there will be plenty of smaller studios to be snatched up. If this does go through, however, then there will be a lot more eyes on any acquisitions in the future.
I just think from a Playstation point of view this isn’t actually all that bad (from a gamer perspective. The suits probably are bricking it).
@Teddie-bear One Reason I'd say Sony Should make a Play For EA Is That They Would Get Both Battlefield And Titanfall.
@TheCollector316 Yes in the short term but probably not in a fair fight long term. So you have to turn the game to one you can win by having a USP. Look at Nintendo.
Sony have done really well in this by consistently having the best first party content for a decade. But MS is closing in here with all these studio acquisitions and Game Pass. Sony need to branch out with new ideas. PSVR is a potential differentiator but it's only a niche product, it isn't it.
I do find it interesting that they are talking about entrenchment, because that is exactly the position PlayStation has been in for years. It's taken a long time to reel them back in.
🤦 dudes make the same game every year with a different skin, yawn
I still think its incredibly unlikely COD continues to be released as it was under MS. They didn't spend that money for nothing but a COD factory, they wanted to quickly build their studio size with ready-to-go high level talent and Acti was on the chopping block. It's really unlikely that a dozen studios will just keep working on COD like they did under Acti cranking out a game a year. So I think COD's power will be diminished going forward, willingly, to use the resources more strategically.
I miss MAG and Socom…
Modern Warfare 2 will be on the PlayStation for 2 years before the next one is to release. If MS decide to make it Xbox and PC only after that it might make Sony say yes to Gamepass on the PlayStation.
@BoldAndBrash that's the problem ppl will buy a ps for the exclusives ...cod exclusives or timed exclusives and Sony know how much money they make from that no matter what ppl on this forum say, they have seen how much console sales and money they will lose once they stop and I know Microsoft said cod will be multiplatform but that says nothing ,they could release the free to play warzone on both and keep the main game for Xbox exclusive...there u go cod is multiplatform
@Areus Thought of that myself once but now I'm not so sure.
If EA isn't going to use Titanfall, it could be a cheap buy for that ip. Even Battlefield can't beat CoD and the game has been receiving a lot of hate over the years. 2042 is the first time i haven't bothered with the series. Battle Royal for V wasn't very exciting either imo. Would be a lot safer to have something more towards the older CoD gameplay instead of Battlefield realisim
What I find truly fascinating is Sony has Herman Hulst in charge of the studios, the man who helped create Killzone. I think this is the golden opportunity to make a high quality Killzone and Socom Multiplayer that can face the music with Call of Duty. Sony needs to get back in the trenches like when they were behind in the PS3 era and fight back! They have so much talent it’s crazy not to.
Complaining about possibly losing a franchise, while neglecting their own.
Bloodborne 60fps? Would take a day of work.
Soul Reaver and Tenchu games? Killzone?
ANY rpg's in the pipeline that are not final fantasy?
IMO this is the reason they bought Bungie. Destiny is the only game to can even come close to posing a minor challenge to COD.
Last COD game I bought was World at War way back in the PS3 era but I'm a little intrigued with what they'll do with Warzone 2.0
@K-Z What I'd give for a MAG2 compatible with PSVR2 (as well as flatscreen)... maybe with 512 players this time!
That game had some serious potential, but Sony never capitalised on it. It would probably be best if it was a F2P game though, as it needs a BIG player base.
Sony has more than enough talent and resources to make an fps to rival CoD. Considering CoD barely even try anymore. If the game is good enough, it’ll sell consoles on its own and it would reap all the profits from a wholly owned franchise being exclusive to the platform. I personally wouldn’t play it, because it would be live service garb that’ll degenerate into a memberberries skin factory like most modern shooters.
I miss the old model of map packs for year and then we all move on to something else but gotta get that “reoccurrant user spending” money, obviously.
@mrtennis1990 Talent-wise no problem, it's Microsoft's deep pockets that makes this an almost impossible uphill battle.
I like warzone..i'm looking forwards to this years call of duty but if its the last one on playstation so what? Plenty of other fps games to play..to be honest since elden ring released and i started playing ac origins again i've hardly touched a fps game..lost epic stole my weekend..
Removed - unconstructive
Sony is good.cod need sony and they said future games will be on PlayStation.so its a win and win for both.its all good.word up son
cry me a river sony... what a pathetic response. instead of being complacent and acting like cod is the be all end all of fps for the rest of time, get to work and create a BETTER alternative to cod. you certainly have the manpower and resources to do so. but to say you need cod for your survival is laughable. the switch is doing just fine without a single cod game on its platform. sorry, no sympathy from me... sony, just do better. your envy for a medicore franchise is an embarassment.
Call of Duty makes so much money it's the only reason why MS won't make it exclusive.
Although I can’t disagree with the massive amount of money that COD brings in, I feel like there is a chink in the armor of the franchise. Despite huge sales, both Cold War and Vanguard seemed to struggle commercially and critically, comparatively speaking. Battlefield 2042 was poised to take a large piece of the market share FPS pie, but it fell flat on its face and spoiled a large opportunity. If it would have stuck the landing I think there would have been a shifting of balance.
And like others have said, it’s not like MS has a history of managing its studios very well over the years. ActiBlizz is a hot mess lately, so if I were MS I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch.
@arsmolinarc that’s a great point
@Porco dude it's someone fro freaking Brazil lol. I'm not saying that Ryan doesn't say dumb sh*t all the time but this is clickbait, no important person said this.
It's an interesting one, although I do find it slightly ironic given how much PS have paid to keep content off Xbox. They have already confirmed that it will stay MP, and although if they made exclusive it would drive the subs up massively, as others have said, they won't walk away from the money it brings in from PS.
Microsoft could go and get this closed by June next year (although personally I think it closes before then) and then by Dec next year announce they are acquiring another company. Mad thing is they could go and acquire another publisher, and they still will not be hitting a monopoly. You do not become a monopoly by becoming the third highest company in terms of revenue.
I bought my ps4/5 for the exclusives...
..but I'm sure CoD had its fair share of influence, when it came to console purchases, "im getting a ps with CoD. Cool, me too", etc. Ps usually had the more feature rich version of CoD, while other platforms had to wait for exclusivity to end, sometimes a year long.
I'm sure ms will keep CoD multiplat, but maybe its optimized better for the xbs' or exclusive content on xb, etc.
@GymratAmarillo you're probably right!
People always think you have to be the number one to be a healthy company. PlayStation should concentrate on their business and what they are good at. Let Xbox have the rest. PlayStation can’t compete with the cashflow of Microsoft and they shouldn’t try. Just keep making great games. Look at Nintendo. They are a healthy company and not bothered by Xbox nor PlayStation. They do their own thing and that is what PlayStation should do.
@GunValkyrian I’ve been saying the same for some time now. Well said sir.
Third party titles generate monstrous amounts of income, but PlayStation has to be able to stand on it's own two feet with it's own IP.
MS have shown them that they simply can't rely on titles like CoD and FIFA anymore, because they don't know when a mega corp will swoop in and buy them up.
The best thing about this though is Sony is already diversifying their own portfolio, and trying to manoeuvre in to a position where they don't need to rely on these titles.
They seemed to already be heading in this direction, but (speculatively) it's why we see more and more chat about their own live service projects, why they've bought Bungie, and why you can bet they're sniffing around Square-Enix for the likes of FF XIV.
Combined with the expansion of the PlayStation brand in to movies, pushing the PlayStation name further in to esports either through EVO or inzone, Sony might already be at a relatively good starting point with regards to planning for life with or without CoD.
I don't see this as a company in panic mode at all. More like one that is simply being realistic about what is happening, and manouvering themselves in to a stronger position.
Short term losing CoD and/or seeing it on Game Pass Day 1 would be a blow, but long term it could be one of the best things that's happened to online gaming on PlayStation. They've already got the name for producing top quality titles.
Just let them keep doing what they're good at.
As someone noted above, look at Nintendo.
IMO it makes sense for MS to keep the big multi-plats multi-platform (Cod, Doom, Diablo) and use the purchase to maybe get a few bespoke XB/Windows exclusives since MS had kinda cut a lot of studios loose that were providing those.
We'll see what they do but right now I don't see MS as trying to make the XB some #1 console as they put it all on Windows too. I think they're more in it for the money over the 'console wars' and keeping the big ones mutliplat means more money for Redmond.
I mean I guess they could be jerks about it. If Sony is so worried they need to pick up some big studios. Make a play for Ubisoft as I don't see Square-Enix to be anything to brag about unless one is surgically connected to crap Final Fantasy stuff.
It's really strange as I remember playing the first CoD - I'd just played Medal of Honour which was great, and then CoD was just another level above that.
Then CoD 2 I used to play local multiplayer with my uni housemates and was a blast - but it wasn't until CoD4 (MW) and seeing my brothers blasting away on it did I began to think it was a major franchise.
But even then I never thought it would reach the levels it has now (where with GTA and FIFA it's reaches "casual" gamers), where it's supposedly become a lynchpin in the console wars...
COD put in some serious work for PS4, that marketing deal heist Layden and crew pulled off was massive, you gotta respect COD's value from a business view.
Sony's failure in this situation was Jim Ryan & Hulst playing into Microsoft's "exclusives are bad" game and now they can turn 30% of the industry exclusive with a snap of a finger while Sony doesn't have their own castle fortified anymore.
So what Sony are basically saying is, we know most of the PlayStation fan base will jump ship to Xbox when this happens.
@GunValkyrian Who said Sony was tripping? You do know that Xbox isn't exempt from keeping games away the competition, right? Really not trying to defend Sony here, but they have been transparent on how their timed exclusives deals last. Xbox uses tactics to have you believe it's staying there on that platform.
If Cuphead was truly timed, why didn't Xbox say it was timed? Also the length (3 years) was crazy enough. Just using that one as an example. FF7R was only for a year. You would have to ask Square why FF7R isn't on Xbox.
I remember how bad it was during the 360 days where Xbox had all the deals in place and such. Now that Playstation is doing the same, they look like the bad guys. Well both companies are bad in that regard. Nintendo seems to be the only one that don't do crap like that. Well not often at least...
Gotta say been an early gen adopter must be quite stressful these days for those who stick to one platform. Given the likelihood of more acquisitions, you could buy a specific console because it met your genre preferences in the previous gen and then suddenly another console becomes the home for it. Those of my friends without new gen consoles are undecided. I'm guessing between pc and console I'm safe. But who knows.
Revive Resistance, Crysis or Killzone !!!!! I’d much rather play those series or a new military IP altogether than yet ANOTHER iteration of COD like we have had for over a decade.
This is going to be huge for Xbox, and gamepass in particular.
Cod will definitely still come to PlayStation though. They really don’t need to keep it exclusive. In fact it probably ends up working out better if they charge £70 for it on PlayStation whilst marketing you get it day 1 as part of your Xbox subscription.
What will be interesting is if Xbox cared enough about all the timed exclusivity deals Sony has made over the years with the cod franchise that they’ll show a bit of spite and keep certain things like spec ops or maps timed exclusive for xbox and pc
@GunValkyrian It's adorable that you think Microsoft is THAT sweet. Just like they tip toed around Bethesda title's exclusivity before the deal was finalized, they have been doing the same thing since this Activation acquisition been under review.
These buyouts won't effect Sony this generation, but going forward after you will start to see Sony slowly bleed to death. Just because it doesn't have the capital for this kind of rival. You can kind of see Sony freaking out by some of their actions since. Buying Crunchyroll, Evo, and Repeat.gg are all cheaper purchases that give them a lifeline if the Playstation brand starts to sink.
Make COD XBox exclusive for all I care. I have played my share of COD, I can survive just well without playing another one.
Microsoft buying Activision Blizzard is the most glaring antitrust violation ever seen.
Nothing good will come of it. It shouldn't be allowed.
Only ever played one cod game and that was from PS plus a couple years ago so none of this bothers me in the slightest. I can see why they've purchased Activision with the target of getting CoD day one on GamePass so they can get way more people getting an Xbox for GamePass subscriptions makes sense. When you look at the recent numbers of GamePass subs being 25 mil prolly closer to 30 mil and then look at PS plus subs being not far away from 50 mil it all starts making sense as to why they want CoD day one. I think Xbox want to be market leaders for once because for 20 years they've been behind both PS and Nintendo. The fact is before the two big purchases of Bethesda and ActiBlizz Xbox was gonna continue being behind so this time just whip out your trillion wallet and see what happens. Was Fable, Forza, Gears and Halo gonna be enough for Xbox to be market leaders for once I highly doubt it, that's where this time round spending 80 billion on Bethesda and ActiBlizz comes into play. I think E3 2013 really hurt Xbox and now they're using their trillions wallet so this never happens again. As someone that doesn't Xbox I've noticed there seems to be a lack of big triple AAA fresh brand new IP coming from Xbox studios other than sequels for Halo, Fable and Forza so just spend many a billions on studios that will do new big triple AAA IP for you instead, look at Starfield for an example of this. Meanwhile you have Guerilla gambling on triple AAA brand new IP with Horizon Zero Dawn, SuckerPunch gambling on triple AAA brand New IP Ghost of Tsushima, NaughtyDog taking a gamble on big new triple AAA IP The Last of Us in 2013 instead of sticking with Uncharted, Insomniac gambling on Spiderman and now Wolverine and no doubt there will be more big brand new fresh IP coming from PS studios in the future without having to spend 80 billion to get them
Fortnite gave Activision a real fright, and it was built from the ground up in just a few months at a relatively low cost, CoD is not untouchable.
Sony would be better off leveraging its franchises and making sure it has a console that still ticks all the boxes when it comes to family titles. The PS5 did this well with titles like Sackboy right off the bat.
The biggest selling console of the current market? The Nintendo Switch. Call of Duty titles for the Switch? Zero.
Gamers buy it for Nintendo franchises and families buy them for couch multiplayer titles and games they can trust their kids to play. The lack of family titles has always been a gaping hole in Microsoft’s library. Sony have the big franchises and the family titles.
It’s almost impossible to believe how much the industry has changed from the beginning of the ps4 generation to the ps5 gen. More specifically between MS and Sony.
Back then Sony we’re flying and couldn’t put a foot wrong, MS were basically non existent. Shows what money can do eh?
It's not just sony hoping it gets blocked, it getting blocked would be good for the gaming industry in general.
Surely the FTC know this hence why hypocrite Phil has come out saying call of duty will remain multi platform making him look like a Saint, but he ain't doing it to be nice he's doing it because he has to or the deal will fail
Sony could get the new fifa license when EA lose it
@UltimateOtaku91 yet all the other studios ( EA/ubi etc etc ) don't have a problem with it ...the only ones Sony
Edit: the only ones moaning are Sony cause they will lose money it's nothing to do with the industry cause all the rest of the Industry are fine with it ,it's all oh no we are gonna lose money blah blah
@UltimateOtaku91
Doubtful. The FTC hasn't seen a merger/buy deal it hasn't liked in a LONG time.
If anything maybe the EU could do something but don't look to the USA for any type of consumer help.
@UltimateOtaku91 exactly mate can you imagine the top brass at activision being told ‘oh by the way, you can’t release on the PlayStation platform anymore’… 😂😂😂 never going to happen. And Phil Is a mug who is losing MS a fortune
I’m very sceptical about all this. Not saying it’s false but I would not take ‘Sony says, Sony believes’ etc. (translated with Google by a Reseterara to boot) as some serious source of info or undeniable facts.
Mr and Mrs Sony (and family in Brazil) genuinely answered a questionnaire apparently. Whatever. 😅😀
I’m curious to learn what Sony family in China said to Google translate 🤔
@get2sammyb Quality does not mean money.
The future of gaming is in real bad shape if Microsoft are in control, it's quite sad but we're going to look back on these days with nostalgia just as we do in the film and music industry now.
Even if Call of Duty keeps coming to Playstation the fact that it'll be $70.00 on Playstation and no extra coat on Xbos and PC would be a deadly blow for Sony
I really hope this means Sony are working on a SOCOM reboot…
COD is only COD in name , warzone hard carries the franchise & the MP part has been dead for years . but that’ll probably change with the MW2-wanna be game coming out later .
@kyleforrester87 it's a Sammy Barker article. All doom and gloom for Sony
Makes my day reading the saltiness from you gatekeeping gamers LOL.
@RadioHedgeFund Microsoft has a few family friendly titles like Viva Piñata. So it not a massive gaping hole in their library... The fanbase just chooses to not support Microsoft’s more family friendly stuff.
I can't understand what's Sony's problem here, they never owned the COD ip. Eventually some other competitor will come and claim the rights of COD. They should know better that this was a possibility and should have a plan B. They can't cry for something it was never theirs. No regulator commission can take serious those statements Sony drops in the table. Move on and deal with it.
Sony have a huge problem if they lose a big chunk of their COD microtransaction money and COD sales due to gamepass. COD will remain multiplatform but it will be $70 on PlayStation or "free" with gamepass. The optics are really bad
When your number one, the only way to go from there is down. That applies to both PlayStation and COD. Either one can fall from their throne at any point.
I can see PlayStation’s concern, COD is massive. Having it go right into gamepass can be tempting to players. That can take away PS5 sales and potential first party sales. Sony will be fine. They are not going anywhere.
@AverageGamer The Xbox 360 had an excellent library of 1st party exclusives that ticked all the boxes. I used to use my 360 for everything. It replaced my cable box as well as my other games consoles. Kinect was a lot more fun that many ever realised and great fun with the kids.
The Xbox One went in the complete opposite direction: they killed all the really interesting multimedia functions due to a minority backlash, shuttered most of their studios, canned loads of great looking exclusives and then created Gamepass because they really had nothing left to lose.
That worked out in the end but the Xbox One compared to the PS4’s phenomenal library is night and day, and I say this as someone who games mostly on an Xbox One these last 7 years!
Don't give a toss about CoD but I know a lot of people enjoy it.
I'm more concerned about Crash, Spyro and Diablo.
I haven't decided which way to jump for the next gen - didn't think I'd ever consider XBox but this gen, Sony are really not engaging with me and this ActiBlizz deal could push me to team green.
Wait, did I just go back in time several months back when Microsoft first announced this? This isn't news, as there's nothing new to talk about. Microsoft bought Activision. Microsoft has said Call of Duty will remain multiplatform. Did I miss something? Nope.
Obviously if Call of Duty was an Xbox exclusive, it would be a huge blow, but maybe it would also force Sony to stop throwing their own series in the closet to never be seen from again just like what people say Microsoft does. Not that they don't, but maybe Sony would get off their butts and bring back Killzone and/or Resistance. That would have been one good thing from it all, but it's irrelevant in the end since Call of Duty is still multiplatform.
Shaken? That reads terribly.
Sony sounds shook? Christ who wrote this a chav?
Man shook of Ms fam ya get me? To speak in that utter crap which isn't English.
Me - 'Hey sony want to make a new Resistance or Killzone to compete with CoD?...' Sony - ’No way man it's too hard and expensive and CoD is too good it's impossible to beat so why even bother'
Think you mean shaken, not shook, but the point remains. (Oh, just noticed I"m not the only one who noticed. lol)
@Milktastrophe
@Milktastrophe
Very true but it dont matter call of duty just prints its own money lol I know people that only play call of duty nothing else till the next one its crazy this is a big blow to sony no matter how you look at it
Why do Sony care. It’s not like “Only on PlayStation” means a game will only be available on Playstation. Microsoft Windows powers most PC’s that run the PC versions of Sony games. Maybe don’t charge people extra to play the PS5 version of a game they bought on PS4. Maybe have a simplified PS Plus pricing structure. Standard and Deluxe. Maybe have a simplified store which does not require fixes to allow people to redeem games being provided to service subscribers. Maybe not charge stupid amounts for games. All would aid with engagement. It not like Sony have had games kept of other systems as “exclusives” themselves. If Microsoft want to exclude 50% of a market from buying a product, good for them. In time it will just fade to obscurity.
@solidox it's not about whether Xbox keep cod on their system they have already said they will keep it multiplatform ...it's about the money /console sales they will lose once the game is added to gamepass/non Sony exclusive cod stuff / and those who go to Xbox will buy other games /stuff on Xbox and not Sonys
They will lose a lot of money and like a few ppl in here think destiny will take over blah blah it won't, the money coming from destiny ( when it's completed ) is just a drip in the ocean compared to cod
It shows how much cod exclusives bring in or Sony wouldn't give a hoot and they are the ones who are in the know how much it does
Oh and this what Sony really thinks of GP
Game Pass has grown to capture approximately 60-70% of the global subscription services market (that marketshare is even greater in Brazil, where Game Pass represents approximately 70-80% of the PC subscription services market)
They believe that it would take several years for a competitor – even with substantial investments – to create a rival effective for Game Pass
Reckons series "influences users' console choice"
Uhm...duh? Isn't that kind of the point?
I mean, isn't Sony's first-party offerings there to influence a users' console choice?
Is Sony going to develop its first-party games for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch?
Not here to get into a contest with anyone, just seems odd that Sony is...stating the obvious as if it's some kind of argument against the acquisition.
Welcome to the console business.
Well if sony was that worried about it. Maybe they should have made s move. Yea they don't got it like ms but they could have came up with that. You have to remeber sony is bigger then just Playstation. They own movie studios and a electronic devison. Maybe they shouldn't have slept on it if it matters so much?
@GamingFan4Lyf it is to try and influence the take over they don't want it to happen ....... What they have actually done is buy up exclusive (timed or not )cod stuff for years so the ppl would buy Into Thier brand and now someone else might do that it's oh nooooo stop em
I'm gonna be honest. I don't care the slightest about CoD, but this buyout is a typical monopolistic Microsoft practice and it harms the market. I do hope it gets blocked.
They don't have to be worried anyway. CoD sell more on Playstation than all other platforms combined. Microsoft are far too greedy to spit on all that money. They won't have the balls to make it exclusive to Xbox and PC, they'd lose far too much money.
Microsoft are a cancer to the industry. Whatever they touch turn to *****. Every bad practices in the industry can be traced back to them. If they had never joined the industry, we would be living in a much better video game era than what we have now.
@GigaGaia much better? Where the only console choice is PS, Nintendo… and maybe Ouya lol? Come on dude, Xbox has done a lot of amazing things, don’t be like this bud.
@OthmaneAD none of those games bring revenue like COD, those games sell once and then it's over, meanwhile COD makes billions of dollars every year, if Sony had to choose between their "amazing single player" games and COD they will 100% pick call of duty cause it keeps raining cash
Sony dominated the console market, but it didn't do its best.
The xbox came first, with generation compatibility, game pass, 1440p and vrr support, auto-updates, trophy system, game folders, and more. When Microsoft bought Activision, they suddenly bought Bungie for a high price.
Managers must stop sharing profits and invest in technology development.
@K1LLEGAL
Totally agree. I’m happy they focus on that thing instead.
PlayStation Brazil is cool but even if whatever that somebody translation from Resetera says is somewhat accurate Brazil has nothing to do with PlayStation WW market. This is blown out of proportion and gullible people and console warriors running with it. 😅
Like this is coming from Jack Ryan mouth or something. Wake up people haha
‘SONY is Terrified’ 🙄
They don’t sound “shook” (shaken), they sound like they are saying the only thing that it makes sense for them to say from a business perspective.
Sony doesn't need CoD. They gotta get Dr.Disrespects new FPS Deaddrop. Yayayayyayayayayayyyayayayay. The 2-Times, back to back gonna save em.
It is a pity that there is no explanation in the text. As I am used to here of course . This is about an investigation by the Brazilian watchdog. And they want to know how the competition views the takeover. In addition to Sony, for example, they have asked Ubisoft and Warner Bros exactly the same.
@get2sammyb we don't have how much cod makes on ps, that figure cod makes is on ps, xbox and pc
The thing is, there is always an IP that will push someone to a console if it's exclusive. In my case, if Metal Gear became an Xbox exclusive, I'd buy my first Xbox console ever. This will be different for everybody of course in terms of what is there line
@Intr1n5ic Same! I looked down and thought 'Yep, had to be'.
I thought PushSquare had turned a corner on the Sony negativity recently, and it was so refreshing.
As several others have said in this thread, it looks like a return to form for the author. I get that outrage drives clicks, but the facts are that MS will not turn down the amount of money CoD makes for PS fans. That'd be like making Fornite an exclusive. Shareholders will NOT allow it for the sake of a 'war' that doesn't exist.
@dasd2 Killzone is deader than a dodo. Whilst i enjoyed 2 & 3 the campaigns were mediocre at best and if it did revive it will never generate CoDs numbers
Let COD exclusive to Xbox platforms
And anyone simply forget this series forever
The COD is really big frachises, hell yeah ... but we still got other big games like Battlfield, Apex Legends ...
It will hurt Sony 1 but Microsoft 2
@BAMozzy I think Sony were happier to let Resistance and Killzone die and slide a bit of money towards Acti for COD because it meant Acti could put up the money for yearly releases and take the flack for the monetisation, and Sony got a more passive income from the mega hit.
That obviously backfired.
@Richnj Exactly - its a lot cheaper to 'buy' marketing for a game than to spend the hundreds of millions running 8+ studios all dedicated to ensuring CoD releases annually or even making your own FPS game. Its also getting 30% of ALL MTX sales too as they are all digital so cashing in on their 'bad' practices (loot box).
CoD became a sensation thanks to Xbox marketing and the rise of Online gaming. CoD4:MW was tied to Xbox and its that game, specifically on Xbox, that propelled the franchise to the top. They remained tied to Xbox until well into the PS4 era when Sony went very aggressive on buying up 3rd Party exclusivity - with CoD, Destiny, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Avengers etc - some content in multi-platform games 'never' coming to other platforms. All to 'force' people to buy their system and take sales from MS, now MS is buying up Studio's, buying up the 'source' of those games and the IP's, Sony are whining - but its just Karma!!
@BAMozzy Yeah, I'd prefer all games be multiplatform, but I can't blame a publisher making exclusive content if they funded the development. Like what we see with Nintendo and Beyonetta, or how we'll see with MS and future titles for the studios they now own, or if the game wouldn't exist without that initial funding. If Sony wanted to make Bungie content exclusive, then fine, because they are footing that bill.
But paying for timed and DLC exclusivity of massive franchises really bugs. It's greed, and I won't feel bad if it bites you in the backside.
CoD: such a brainless, noninnovative game.
@Richnj Of course if a developer is working with a Publisher as Sony/MS etc are publishers, then I have no issue with them being exclusive to a platform/ecosystem. Avalanche are making a game and its being Published by Xbox - without a Publisher, you don't have a game to sell and that Publisher may well be 'paying' the studios costs to make that game so its up to them where its Published and how they recuperate their costs.
What I object to though is 'multi-platform' games that would still be developed and published by 3rd Parties, Obviously any money they get in boosts their 'profits' but its just buying 'marketing' rights and 'keeping' certain content off of the competition purely for their own benefits. CoD is a classic example - make Billions every year - much more than it costs to make and Publish, but being popular, means that fans will buy PS for the 'extra' modes, maps etc that are ONLY on Playstation.
PC/Xbox/Nintendo gamers miss out and get a 'worse' deal as the cost is the same for less content and artificially 'delayed' content - wait a year for it. Its all done to 'encourage' you to get locked into Playstation and therefore buy ALL games on PS making them more money than they spent on securing that content. Instead of investing in their 'own' games, they have opted to buy up marketing, exclusivity etc in most of the 'big' 3rd Party AAA multi-platform franchises.
That can backfire though as they don't 'own' the devs, the publishers, the IP's etc and if they decide to do something different (go F2P for example and stop the annual cycle), sell off IP's, devs, or even sell up completely, then Sony has to fall back on the things they can control - which is their own Studio's and Ecosystem.
Xbox is a 'multi-platform' ecosystem. Yes you do have the 'locked' Console as the 'only' console to play Xbox games on, but you can play on basically every other platform - except Nintendo/Sony consoles because they won't let you 'stream' Game Pass on them. Understandable - if you could stream MLB21/22 on a PS5 from $10 a month to MS, then Sony won't get money from PS5 game sales, same with B4B, R6:Extinction and numerous other multi-platform games they 'rely' on for income.
But in reality, if you want to play Forza Horizon 5 for example, you can play on Mobiles, Console and PC - that's all types of platform. OK so its not 'Switch or Playstation' consoles, but you already have a platform you can play on as I bet you have a Mobile. Even a cheap student laptop (no gaming GPU etc) can play MSFS, FH5 etc via streaming and you could play directly through just a Samsung TV.
Nintendo and Sony games are only on one platform that you have to buy from them - at least with MS, you can buy a Samsung/Apple phone, a HP/Acer/ASUS/Alien etc Laptop/PC or a MS branded console. That's pretty 'multi-platform' considering many 'multi-platform' games these days don't release on Switch or Mobile platforms!!
@Martsmall. All while the gaming backlog grows. My memories of the PS exclusive content with Cold War was 12 months of bug fixes, tweaks and balancing, multiple large downloads, broken updates and when things had finally matured it was made available on all platforms. If the are worried about revenue they maybe want to rethink what PlayStation means and stop waffling it meaningless corporate jargon. “Player Engagement” = not giving us money. Does not resonate as we love games as much as you:
@solidox no it doesn't but it's a company like all of em that like to keep their shareholders happy ,and unfortunately it's now the case of we dont care what the customers like or not it's about what will keep the shareholders money flowing in ( and not saying it's just Sony it's every big company )
@BAMozzy Really is criminal how Sony pretty much gave up on developing it's own multiplayer franchises after the CoD marketing deal.
@get2sammyb Sony just needs to make a SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs game and stop worrying about Activision! Sony has so many great titles that people are asking for a remake of and nothing !
@OthmaneAD did they or did they sell well because PS consoles sold well? The shift from COD competitive being played on PlayStation from xbox was big for lot of people. Not to mention there was no crossplay at the start of last gen. So Sony had the most powerful console, the cheaper console and hosted the competitive scene for the most popular franchise in gaming. That made it the platform to play the most popular gaming franchise in the world. All of that played roles in the platforms success. We don't think of it because we are hardcore gamers but there are people out there that only have a console to play COD, Madden, NBA 2k, FIFA etc. They see their favorites cheaper and crossplay is a thing now and they will go where they get more value. Just this in Game Pass vs $70 is a big blow for Sony.
@Notoriousmakavel yeah it's safe to say they'll be day one or maybe even a week early in "beta" on Game Pass eventually. A bg blow would be adding the old titles to game pass as well. There are so many COD fans that yearn for the old titles that would eat them up at 60 fps with the boost Microsoft's teams would provide.
@4kgk2 what does that do for them though? Zero of Squares big titles are coming to Xbox anyway.
@Notoriousmakavel yeah will have to see what happens with heavily licensed stuff like Guitar Hero
Crap game anyway, COD has never interested me. Certainly has no sway on my system of choice. Nintendo and Sony are my go to systems. SEGA if they were still making consoles.
@Notoriousmakavel be nice since it's a do ware at this point basically. I've actually been playing RTCW with some mods to help it run better in modern hardware on my PC.
@11001100110zero like what though? Gamepass? Which was clearly born out of desperation rather than ‘doing gamers a favour’.
@11001100110zero I stand by my statement. Xbox is nothing but a cancer for the industry. Paid online, season pass, dlc and now subscription model, every single bad things in the industry that has happened is because of them ... and EA. The difference is, EA actually make a good game once in a while. Microsoft can't even make a good game and even with all the studios they bought, they aren't even releasing anything and the sad part is, they're still in last place.
What would be wrong with having only Sony and Nintendo? They're the only 2 that actually matters, so there wouldn't be a problem. You think there wouldn't be any competition. It would be like right now, between Sony and Nintendo, because Microsoft aren't competition, they're just an annoyance trying to buy a monopoly and even with that, they're still losing.
If a time machine is invented, Xbox need to be erased from existence.
They invented DLC? They invented Season Passes?
@GigaGaia also… nobody held a gun to Sonys head, telling them to bill for online access. Sub service? Who started it first? I’m not console warring, just shocked at how bad a take that was.
Idk man, just seems like you’re rambling over nothing.
